How Is Lebanon Different from Other Middle Eastern Countries?

Many people have the wrong idea about Lebanon. Yes, this country located along the Mediterranean Sea is part of the Middle East, but you won't find any camels or desert-dwelling nomadic tribes there. In fact, the country that 4.5 million Lebanese call home is the only Middle Eastern nation without a desert within its borders. Instead, there are mountains, fertile valleys that produce fruits and vegetables (much like California), and, when it gets cold enough, there is snow, especially at higher elevations.

A country like no other:

Summers are long, hot, and humid in Lebanon, and the winters are typically cold and wet. You could take a refreshing dip in the sea in the morning and hit the ski slopes in the afternoon.

Christians are welcome in Lebanon and amount to about 40 percent of the population.

Relics from the Roman Empire abound, including the tallest Roman columns found anywhere in the world.

Commissioned by the Lebanese Ministry of Tourism, We spent 5 summer months filming Lebanon from Above, including its rural, urban, cultural touristic and historical location, as well as the amazing number of festivals.

The idea was to show Lebanon's beauty, diversity and wealth from another angle (above), in order to encourage and promote international and domestic tourism.

My main personal goal is to remind us all that Lebanon is not all about problems, political turmoil, trash...etc but is first and foremost a country that has so much to offer on such a small portion of land, and is still, in spite of everything, truly beautiful.

Maybe by seeing this video, people who lost sight of what Lebanon truly is, will have newfound optimism and strength to participate in steering the country in the right direction, to understand that it is their country to love and protect.

_____________________________________________________

We filmed from mid June to early November and covered Mount Lebanon, Beirut, Southern Lebanon, the Bekaa, Baalbek and North Lebanon.

We received amazing support from the Ministry of Tourism, as well as the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defense, the Lebanese Air Force and the Lebanese Army Intelligence.

From the beginning, a social media campaign was created on Instagram, under @riseabovelebanon, which yielded a lot of interest and followers, reaching an organic 12,000 followers so far.

The book, also titled "Rise Above Lebanon", was released on 2 December 2015. it is a hardcover photography book of the highest standard, with 200 pages of images of Lebanon from Above and is available in all major bookshops in Lebanon.

The video, of a duration of 5 minutes was released by Live Love Lebanon and the Ministry of Tourism on 4 February 2016 and immediately went viral, with over about 2 million views as well as over 40,000 shares, 12,000 likes and hundreds of comments (99% of which are positive).

The result is this video of 5 Minutes.

Guide To Lebanon:

Lebanon offers plenty: from ancient Roman ruins, to well preserved castles, limestone caves, historic Churches and Mosques, beautiful beaches nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, Restaurants, world renown Lebanese cuisine, nonstop nightlife and discotheques, to mountainous ski resorts.

Qadisha, one of the deepest and most beautiful valleys in Lebanon, is indeed a world a part. At the bottom of this wild steep-sided gorge runs the Qadisha River whose source is in the Qadisha Grotto at the foot of the Cedars. And above the famous Cedar grove stands Qornet el Sawda, Lebanon's highest peak. This is truly Heaven on Earth.

Agelbert NOTE: The Valley of the God is now a rather cold and inhospitable place located at the boundary of the arctic circle on Baffin Island, Canada. I believe this is one of those rare places that, due to rapidly increasing temperatures throughout the year, will have thriving vegetation soon. There will still be the problem of the long, though much milder, winters with almost no sunlight, but due to the much higher CO2 content of Hothouse Earth, humans might be able to survive there by growing food crops and storing the surplus for winter consumption. If they can make use of geothermal energy for power, they could grow crops with artificial light in greenhouses during the winter months. If you are young and adventurous, check out the real estate on Baffin Island. I'll stay right here in Vermont, because I am neither.

This is a photo of the Valley of The God in Auyuittuq National Park, Baffin Island, Canada. The rocky valley winds down the center of the image while shark tooth shaped mountains rise on either side of the valley floor. Mount Thor is visible in the distance. Light illuminates the clouds with touches of gold against a blue sky. Overall tones are browns and greys with some ochre and white snow on higher elevations. The photo was taken by Will Christiansen (SKYFOLK). More of his work can be seen in this Medium post or you can download the Baffin Island Expedition theme from the Microsoft Store.

-------
On June 12th,  I broke down into tears. Minutes earlier, I had been outside my truck, leaning against it, head buried in my arms, frustration and failure washing over me. I wanted to quit. I got back in the car and as I drove, the pain got the better of me and the tears came.

This past spring was a tough one. Supercell structure and beautiful tornadoes had been very hard to come by. In fact, the tornado in the opening of this film was the only good one I saw this entire year. I had been on the road longer than ever before. Driven more miles. I was away from my family for 12 straight days at one point, and when I got home, I had to tell them I was going back out 24 hours later for June 12th.  It was just too good to pass up. It promised to be a day that I could get everything I had been hoping for this spring and I had no choice. My wife understood, even though I knew she wished I stayed home. And I wished it too.

I knew right where I wanted to be that day. But this year I struggled with confidence in trusting my instincts. Maybe it was because the lack of good storms this spring made me question my skills, or maybe it was something else inside of me. Whatever the case, I let myself get twisted and unsure, and found myself 80 miles away from where I had wanted to be when the tornadoes started to drop and the best structure of the year materialized in the sky. The photos from Twitter and Facebook started to roll in and I knew I had missed everything.

It may not be easy to understand why, but when you work as hard as I did this spring, a moment like that can break you.  I felt like I let my wife down. But mostly I let myself down. I forgot who I was and that's not me. Or it shouldn't have been me. I failed myself.  And it seemed like the easy choice to just give up and head for home.

But I didn't. I'm not sure why, but the pain slowly began to subside. I realized it was only 4pm and the storms were still ongoing. Maybe if I could get in front of them the day could be saved. Ninety minutes later, I got out ahead and saw some of the best structure I'd seen all spring and a lightning show that was so incredible it's one of the very last clips of this film.

And that's why this film is called "Pursuit." Because you can't give up. Keep chasing, keep pursuing. Whatever it is. That's the only way to get what you want.

I learned something about myself on June 12th which carried over to the final few days of chasing this spring. I trusted myself again and those days were incredibly rewarding. This was who I'd been all along but had forgotten. I can't wait for next year.

The work on this film began on March 28th and ended June 29th. There were 27 total days of actual chasing and many more for traveling. I drove across 10 states and put over 28,000 new miles on the ol' 4Runner. I snapped over 90,000 time-lapse frames. I saw the most incredible mammatus displays, the best nighttime lightning and structure I've ever seen, a tornado birth caught on time-lapse and a display of undulatus asperatus that blew my mind. Wall clouds, massive cores, supercell structures, shelf clouds...it ended up being an amazing season and I'm so incredibly proud of the footage in this film. It wasn't the best year in storm chasing history...but I got to chase storms and share it with you guys. All worth it.

I wanted to do something new this year, so I worked with composer Peter Nanasi to develop a custom track for Pursuit. I'm super excited about it and loved the process of exchanging ideas and building the song as the editing of the film progressed. I am so thankful to Peter for what he came up with, I'm in love with this track!

The time away from my family turned out to be over a month all told. I'm always and continually blessed by a wife who supports what I do and backs me completely. But not only do I have her to thank this spring, but also her parents who hung around for a good chunk of May and early June, to help out wherever needed, watch the kids, run errands and generally be there for Jina. I don't have enough words to convey how appreciative I am for them being around while I was gone.

I think that's about it. I could write a lot more, but I'd rather you watch the film and hopefully have a taste of what I saw this spring. There is nothing quite like strong inflow winds, the smell of rain and the crack of thunder. I miss being out there already.

I hope you enjoy and I'll do my best to answer any questions in the comments below!

Technical Details:

I used two Canon 5DSR's along with a Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm. Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro

Flying over 🌴 Puerto Rico 🌞
« Reply #37 on: April 14, 2020, 03:15:52 pm »
Agelbert NOTE: A long time ago I was an Air Taxi Pilot in Puerto Rico . The scenery in the video below is quite familiar to me . When I had no passengers, I would occasionally fly low over empty beaches (buzzing people was, and still is, a NO NO) and some spectacular 🌊 wave action offshore. Pilots see a lot of natural beauty that most groundpounders never get a chance to see. This video brought back fond memories of lots of flying fun! ENJOY!

----------------------------------
I've been chasing the monsoon in Arizona for about 6-7 years now. This summer was different though. Back in late July, I was wondering why it felt like I was out chasing more than ever before. And then I remembered. I had a job last summer. This year I didn't. I went full-time photography in November of 2014 and haven't looked back.

I was free to roam and had virtually no limitations.  I even had multiple chases where I never actually wend to bed, but instead chased all night. I took the kids to New Mexico at one point early in the season.

Last year I counted roughly 31 total days that I chased a storm during the monsoon. This summer: 48. Yikes.

17,000 miles driven, which was about 3,000 more than last year. Perhaps the biggest difference this year was shooting nearly 60,000 more time-lapse frames than I did in 2014. 105,000 total. And what sticks out to me even more than any of the other numbers above, is that only 55,000 of those 105,000 frames made it into Monsoon II.

What that means is I was able to stuff this new film with only of the best of the best. We missed out on some of the huge dust storms like I've captured in years past, but overall, I think this represents some of the best weather I've ever photographed in Arizona. There are stunning shelf clouds, gorgeous rain shafts, lots of blowing dust, tons of lightning, and even multiple mini-supercells/mesocyclones. The brief meso over Cottonwood at the 3:38 mark is one of my all-time favorites. ... ...

I'm a weather forecaster from the high deserts of California. I've been here since 1980. This new 4K format used in these videos is amazing to watch. You're seeing beautiful examples of orographic lifting over the mountains, cyclonic turning, downbursts from the core of a thunderstorm, cloud to cloud, in cloud, and cloud to ground lightning. I watch it over and over again and there's always something that I didn't see before. Thank you Mike for the beautiful work!!!

Planet Earth: Amazing nature scenery.

Planet Earth" is a 2006 television series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit. I did this montage to promote what I consider being the best documentary  about our planet. I am grateful for life for the hard work BBC put into this. Many years will pass and I doubt other series will reach this quality and cinematography. I do not own the original footage and I am not making any money out of it. After I have watched all eleven episodes, I tried to compress the best shots in just one montage. That's how I come up with this marvelous 13 minutes. If you really like this I suggest you to watch the hole documentary because at the end of each fifty-minute episode, a ten-minute featurette takes a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of filming the series.
