Carbon Negative is the bigger braver sibling of Carbon Neutral. Scientists tell us that to keep atmospheric warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius means a remaining Carbon Budget of somewhere between 400 and 600 billion tonnes of CO2 in total, and we still emit nearly 40 billion tonnes a year today. So that means immediately beginning the process of decarbonising energy, industry, transport and agriculture. But with coal still generating 40% of the world’s electricity, and 98% of the world’s vehicles still running internal combustion engines, how will we achieve the goal. Will we even achieve it all?
