Coal has played a major role in providing us westerners with the standard of living that we've taken almost for granted for over a century. And there's enough of it still in the ground to carry on powering our energy hungry lives for hundreds of years. But of course there's just that pesky problem of the existentially threatening levels of CO2 emissions when we burn it. So are we reducing our global coal consumption and moving to alternative sources of power quickly enough to avert that eventuality? This week we take a look.
