Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said the ship sailed in a northerly direction through the Strait, that its forces had monitored its passage and observed nothing out of the ordinary.

Taiwan is currently in a heightened state of alert due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, nervous that China may try to take advantage of the situation to make a move on the island though the government has reported no unusual Chinese maneuvers.

Last year, U.S. naval ships transited the Strait roughly monthly. Saturday’s sailing was the first since November.

Media Confusion will Cloud Common Sense

Listening to the 🐍 radio and 🐍 TV this morning, it’s clear that Western champions of NATO or its silent investors have learned nothing from their failed militarist managerial expansion. What was needed is a systematic mobilization based on converting from an 🦖 oil and 🦍 conflict regime system (tied to the military managerialism of leading political blocs) to a clean energy and authentic diplomacy regime based on accelerated investments in clean energy and constraints on militarist expansionism.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has stopped one form of NATO expansion, but years of military exercises and arms build ups on all sides have helped neutralize the diplomatic frontier. Yes, Russia should be condemned in the strongest of terms, but that means little when those doing the condemning have themselves contributed to a failed frontier for authentic diplomacy, i.e. a diplomacy based on creating neutral zones between Russia and the EU, where possible.

M.A.D. Foreign Policy
Sometime in the 1960s the United States and Soviet Union both figured out how to destroy the world. There were about 20,000 nuclear weapons between the two countries and at any moment they could turn the globe into a pile of ash. Today there are 9 countries in possession of nuclear weapons of their own (there are many stored around the world in other countries, but they do not have direct control over these nuclear weapons). This “nuclear club” is made up of, in descending order of weapons, Russia, the United States, France, China, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel*, and North Korea.

*- Israel neither confirms nor denies its nuclear program, they have an estimated 80 warheads

I wanted to thank you for posting this well written and comprehensive article; that is aimed at explaining these issues to the most important audience of all the non-specialists who need to wake up in their millions and billions and demand change and also to do what they can in their lives.

I was very busy with my personal life, and was writing a long article for The Class Struggle about China and Covid, so I am very late to the discussion here. I have not yet read your part 2 but will do so in the next couple of days.

I am an Environmental Geographer by training and also hold undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry, so I am conversant with these issues. But people like me are not the ones who need to be seriously informed about this ever deepening crisis, and your article seems to be right on th emoney for average reasonably well-educated people who want to grapple with these issues. There is no escape from this; and that is infinitely more true for the younger people of this planet.
