Compassion in World Farming

Support Only Cruelty- Free Food

There can never be too many reminders of the horrors of factory farming.

No, this is a not a discussion about the food chain, or about the health benefits of going vegetarian. If you eat any meat, dairy, chicken or eggs at all: this is about choosing the products that have the least amount of cruelty associated with their production.

This video serves as a brief introduction to the work of the British organization Compassion In World Farming. They have worked since the 1960's to improve life for these animals, and their work has paid off. In 2007 they achieved a ban on veal crates in the European Union, which led to the EU's agreement to phase out sow stalls and battery cages within the next decade.

They have expanded across Europe and beyond. As world demand for cheap meat increases, the South American rain forests will continue to be devastated for cattle grazing and growing feed for cattle. The issue is not going away.

By now we all know that reducing meat consumption is crucial for a sustainable food scenario going forward. But since we're not all going to be dairy and egg free vegans no matter what, let's start with what we can do, right now.

There is much information available about the fact that "free range" is just as cruel and inhumane as regular factory farming. The best way to procure eggs, meat, dairy and chicken is to support your small local farms, assuming you live near one that raise animals humanely. This is a great thing to bring your neighbors in on and buy in bulk, to reduce the trips and the cost. If that's not possible, find out about the most humane sources for these products through your local health food store.

Let's keep as informed as possible, continue spreading the word. Start with what you can. The more dollars we can redirect in the right direction, the better.

VICTORY! The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act has just passed in Congress, meaning that thousands of animals will be saved. This new legislation contains important language that will reduce and replace the use of animals in painful chemical toxicity tests. By modernizing the ways in which chemicals are tested, this legislation will allow for better regulation of dangerous chemicals, thus protecting both animals and humans. It is a critical step in the right direction.

For 35 years, PETA's scientists have led the fight to convince regulators and industry researchers that poisoning animals doesn't make people safer or healthier, and we're thrilled that lawmakers in Washington, D.C., have finally seen the light. We have played a central role in the revolution in toxicity testing that is now taking place and is reflected in this legislation. Over 50,000 of you signed our action alerts aimed at reducing and replacing the use of animals in chemical toxicity tests. We truly couldn't have done this without your support.

What’s next? The bill has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate! Next it’s on to the President’s desk. We will keep you updated as news comes in!

Spotlight Mexico: after dark days, Coconut the dog has a bright future

This week during a visit to Cozumel, Mexico, our team discovered a dog in desperate need of help. Covered in used motor oil and little more than skin and bones, we found him as we were passing through the mangroves – dense, jungle-like swamps – in the remote, south east side of the island.  In his mouth was the carcass of an opossum, as he was starving and scavenging for anything to eat.

But despite his hunger, when he saw the team he stopped what he was doing and came towards us. Our plans for the day swiftly changed as we began to do whatever it would take to save this dog.

I named him Coconut, a fruit that is dark on the outside yet bright white on the inside. This was both in honor of his amazing transformation at the hands of the team, and our hope for his bright future.

Thanks to our incredible local partner, the Humane Society of Cozumel Island (HSCI), Coconut will continue to receive the care he so desperately needs. He has tested positive for heartworm, so his recovery won’t be easy. But IFAW and HSCI will do everything we can to save him.

Watching our team rescue this dog was an inspiration, and testament to the dedication and professionalism of those working on the ground. Knowing HSCI will continue caring for him gives me hope for his future.

--AD

Our teams make this happen, but our supporters make it possible. Stay tuned for updates on Coconut, who is currently being cared for through HSCI.

Are you going to sit while all the cats in the New York are killed! Save the poor kittys!

PETA Joins Hunters in New York to Declare Open Season on Cats

PETA has once again shown its true colors, this time aligning itself with a hunting organization in order to promote the round up and killing of community cats. As New York State legislators this week were debating whether to provide funding for sterilizing “feral” cats in lieu of killing, two groups came out in opposition: the New York Sportsmen’s Advisory Council and PETA. One wants to hunt down and kill animals and PETA, well, they also want to hunt down and kill animals. The only difference is one shoots; the other injects with poison.

Since its inception, PETA has advocated for the round up and killing of homeless cats
. In 1995, for example, over the objections of cat lovers pushing for a sterilization program, the Mayor of Miami Beach pushed a plan to trap and kill cats. PETA sent a letter to the Mayor applauding his decision. The Mayor, however, had also decided that kittens would be turned over to a rescue group for socialization and adoption. But PETA took issue with this part of the plan, arguing that all the cats, including the kittens, should be taken to animal control and “euthanized by sodium pentobarbital injection.”

More recently, the Pima County, AZ, Board of Supervisors were voting last year on whether or not to reduce the killing of “feral” cats by implementing TNR at the shelter. As the local news reported, “Saving thousands of cats from being euthanized every year sounds like a good idea, but a well-known animal rights group is completely against it.” PETA told legislators that the cats were better dead then fed and urged them to continue rounding up and killing them.

When they are not advocating that community cats should be killed, they are killing them themselves. In 2014, PETA took in 1,605 cats at its Virginia headquarters and killed 1,536 (a kill rate of 96%). They transferred another 43 to kill shelters where they were either killed or displaced others who were killed. That would put the cat kill rate as high as 98%. They found homes for only 16, an adoption rate of 1%.

Thankfully, New York legislators ignored PETA. They voted 188 to 11 to pass the bill and send it to the Governor. Pima Supervisors also ignored PETA, embracing sterilization in lieu of killing. As to PETA killing animals themselves? Virginia lawmakers voted 130 to 3 (over PETA’s objections) to require private shelters, which PETA claims to be, to work to find homes for cats.

Please note: I do not criticize PETA because of what they are thought to stand for (animal rights), but because of what they actually do stand for (animal killing). I criticize them  because they “do not advocate right to life for animals”  (as Ingrid Newkirk herself has written), because they kill over 90% of the animals they take in, including healthy puppies and kittens, and because they also advocate that they be killed by others.

In the early 1990s, I was living in Wheaton, Maryland, a stone’s throw from PETA headquarters, before they relocated to Norfolk, Virginia. Because I love animals, am vegan, and did not want to see them killed, exploited, or abused, I became a PETA volunteer. And then one day, my roommate, a former PETA employee, found a dog in need of a home. We called him Ray. I asked her why we didn’t just take Ray to PETA. Surely, PETA, with its millions of dollars and millions of animal loving members, would find him a home. But she said no, that was a very bad idea, because PETA would just kill him. That is when I did what anyone who truly loves animals would have done, I walked away from them. It is what another PETA intern also did when he saw puppies and kittens in the kill room. He quit in disgust.
[/size]

This is awful! PETA is WRONG!

The catch, neuter and release program many no-kill cat shelters like Kitten Rescue of Los Angeles have is the proper way to deal with bird losses from feral cars. If they are killed, more cats show up. If they are neutered and released, the population is stable or declining (they are very territorial and keep other cats out), so the bird losses go down. Also, feral cats keep the field mice and vole population from getting too large (voles destroy crops and flower gardens - too many mice spread disease).

It is really scientifically stupid, as well as cruel, to hunt and kill feral cats.

Thank you Monsta  , for letting me know about PETA's betrayal. I will not support anything they do from here on out.

Thank you for being part of the solution.

Abused Dog Who Lived in Tiny Cage Finally Gets to Run Free – and She Absolutely Loves it!  ;D

Kate Good
October 25, 2016

As dog lovers, we are always perplexed when we hear news about people subjecting animals to horrific forms of abuse. When we look into the faces of our furry friends, we’re instantly filled with a feeling of love and of course, that overwhelming need to scratch behind their ears, smother them with kisses, and give them all the treats in the world – just for being. But some people don’t harbor such kind feelings towards dogs.

Unfortunately, Lizka the Terrier did not experience this sort of treatment from the people who were keeping her. This poor pup was forced to live in a tiny cage, deprived of water and food and when rescuers from OTOZ Animals, a Poland-based animal rescue, found Lizka she was in a horrible state. Years of life in this small cage left her with severely contracted muscles and broken spirit. Her rescuers describe her as if she was waiting to die, all alone in her filthy cage.  :(

Thankfully, because of the incredible people at OTOZ Animals, these days soon ended for Lizka. The pup was rushed into an emergency vet clinic and given all the proper medical attention she needed to recover from the physical pain and trauma she had suffered.

After a lot of care, Lizka is doing much better! OTOZ Animals recently shared this video of her running – and looking happy as can be!

While she still has some mobility issues in her back legs, her spirit seems to be stronger than ever! The way she lovingly scoots over to greet her caretakers shows how far this resilient pup has come from the scared, abused dog in the photo above.

This incredible transformation is a testament to how far kindness and love can go when it comes to rebuilding the will to live in an animal. Lizka might have known nothing but pain, suffering, and confusion in her early life – but those days will soon be a distant memory thanks to OTOZ Animals!

Nearly 100 Smuggled Puppies Rescued at Wales’ Holyhead Port

November 17, 2016 by gCaptain

Almost 100 puppies were rescued at Holyhead Port in the early hours of Tuesday morning, as part of a Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-led, multi-agency operation tackling illegal animal importation.

The incident has been labelled a “shocking example” of the scale of the puppy trade, with the puppies – of various breeds including Beagles, Basset Hounds, Labradoodles and Pomeranians – treated as “cash bonanza” for organised criminal groups.

pups-holyhead-op-300x199 (photo at article link)

Following an intelligence-led move, two consignments of puppies were intercepted by Border Force as part of the partnership-driven operation. They were on two separate ferries arriving at Holyhead from Dublin on 15 November. On the second vehicle, an attempt had been made to conceal the transported puppies behind bales of wood shavings.

The puppies were travelling in hugely inappropriate conditions, with modes of transport not ventilated, food and water not provided and the animals often kept in filthy conditions. Most were believed to be six or seven weeks old.

pups-behind-bales1-300x199 (photo at article link)

After an initial veterinary inspection, the puppies were deemed fit to travel back, and were returned to the Republic of Ireland, where they are now in DSPCA care. Sadly, two were later identified to have developed canine parvovirus and are under veterinary care, but the other dogs will soon be available for re-homing.

Ian Briggs, of RSPCA’s special operations unit, said:

“These poor puppies were being carted into Wales in deeply inappropriate conditions in the early hours of the morning.

“Sadly, to unscrupulous dealers, these young pups are nothing more than a cash bonanza – and dealers would have been targeting tens of thousands of pounds from these shipments.

“This is another shocking example of people being readily prepared to act illegally and compromise the welfare of defenceless animals to make a quick buck – but, fortunately, they were stopped in their tracks.”

Birkenstock to Release All-Vegan Line in the U.S.!

Kat Smith
January 10, 2017

Fans of comfortable, leather-free shoes, rejoice! Birkenstock is finally bringing vegan versions of its classic styles to its customers in the U.S. – and they are already available for purchase. According to Footwear News, the Germany-based shoe company “is responding to consumer demand for vegan products” — and not a moment too soon because in fashion, you need to be one season ahead, so the time to start planning your wardrobe for spring and summer is now. How is that for following the old adage of “ask and you shall receive?” While the company does offer its U.S. customers and their children some vegan footwear options, we have been sorely missing out on the classic clogs and sandals that have made the brand iconic for hippies and grunge fashion in the 90s.

According to Yahoo News, “the first run of the shoes in the U.S. will include 30,000 pairs in various models, such as the classic Boston clog and the city-chic Gizeh thong sandal.” And of course, all of the shoes will feature the classic cork footbed which makes Birkenstock shoes so comfortable.

Are you looking forward to finally being able to tromp, strut, and sidle in comfort once the cold is gone? Who knows, maybe Vogue will chime in and give these ugly-chic sandals their blessing, like they did back in 2013 after high fashion brand Céline had its models wear a pair of slip-ons as they did their thing on the catwalk.

Birkenstock listening to consumer demands for leather-free shoes just goes to show you how popular cruelty-free options have become in recent years. Now we’ve got a lot more to look forward along with the sunshine to come!

http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/vegan-birkenstocks-available-in-the-us/

Agelbert NOTE: Don't buy for style; buy only because of genuine need. I have not purchased any clothing (even socks!) for about 15 years. The last time I bought a pair of shoes was in 2007 for walking on the treadmill after being implanted with a pacemaker.

Remember, frugality is not just prudent and good for the biosphere, FRUGALITY IS FREEDOM!

Eddie,
You have a tremendous capacity for irrelevance. You should have been a lawyer. I will not enter into a discussion of the chemistry of these shoes that you believe, with all your kindly heart and soul, that MUST be made EXCLUSIVELY from hydrocarbons obtained from fossil fuels. And by the way, at present, less than 5% (I think it's much less than that, but I don't want to get into a quibble contest with you) of crude oil refined ends up as feed stock for plastics, pesticides AND fertilizers. But why spoil a good argument, eh? I hope you have enjoyed your fun at my expense.

Here's a nice little factoid you may be interested in. Did you know that Texas uses more electricity than any other state? Yep. It uses 44% MORE than the next state in line (California).

Do you know WHY it uses so much electricity?   ???

BECAUSE it has a lot of electrically powered, massively polluting, endlessly toxic Oil refineries.

Yep, OIL refineries that DO NOT have on site generators (except for backup) to get their juice.

But it gets BETTER. These savy Texan oil refiners like to get cheap electricity. Consequently they are enjoying the  FACT that a large percentage of their electricity  comes from WIND POWER!

I'm sure you know Texas has its own power grid. They did that so they would not have to be regulated by those commies in the rest of the USA. It seems they save some money that way. Good for them.

Texans are amazing folks. The can add and subtract quite well. And when they figured out that it was cheaper to run oil refineries on Wind Power (it's at about 3 cents a Kwh now - that's cheaper than coal fired juice!), they asked no questions about the source of the juice.  ;)

But I doubt whether the fossil fuel industry in the United States of Exxon/Koch Texas wants that to get around too much. But hey, they're Oil refineries!

You should try to be more affable and find common ground with me rather than always trying to get a rise out of me. This "curmudgeon" fixation you have with me smacks of mental illness. I suggest a vegan diet to improve your mood balance.  ;D

Lab-grown meat is almost upon us — and most Americans would gladly try it

LAST UPDATED ON AUGUST 13TH, 2018 AT 11:15 PM BY MIHAI ANDREI

SNIPPET:

Why, you might ask, would someone go through all this trouble just to have something that’s already easily available — like meat? Well, the reasons often start with ethics, but they don’t end there. Naturally, not having to subject millions and millions of animals to brutal living conditions, and then slaughtering them, is one of the advantages. But it’s definitely not the only one.

It’s estimated that when clean meat reaches its potential, it will require less water, less land, and generate fewer emissions. By all metrics, it will be more sustainable and environmentally-friendly than conventional meat. Given the massive environmental impact that agriculture (and particularly, animal growing) has, it could come as a much-needed boon.

1. By 2020, all California egg-laying hens must have at least one square foot of space, and each veal calf must have at least 43 square feet of space. 👍

2. By 2022, female breeding pigs must have at least 24 feet of space, all chickens must be raised cage-free with at least 1 square foot of space each, and all agricultural products sold in California must have been raised in conditions that meet these standards, even if they come from other states. 👍

Meet Joan , the newest sheep!

July 30, 2019

Marji, Animal Place <info@animalplace.org>

Dear Anthony

For years, Joan always had a friend by her side. She lived in a loving home, with ample room and care...and flock-mates. Last year, Joan became an adoptive mother to Lamby whose biological mother had died.

Lamby passed suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving Joan bereft and alone. Her caregivers could not bear the thought of Joan being by herself so they reached out to Animal Place.

We welcomed Joan and she recently finished her quarantine and met her new flock. Our hope is that she will become best friends with fellow Shetland Sheep, Jett, who was rescued several years ago after kids tied her to a flagpole. Jett has been a loner ever since.

And while the stereotype that black sheep are “outsiders” is true for Jett (self-imposed, by the way), Joan walked confidently into the flock as if she always belonged.

Watch this short video of Joan meeting everyone!

With compassion,
