Tesla Invests in R&D, Not Advertising, & the Results Speak for Themselves

Automobiles and advertising are symbiotic industries. The auto industry dropped over 14 billion bucks on ads in the US in 2018, a spend second only to that of the (much more fragmented) retail industry. Automakers advertise in every conceivable medium, from TV to radio to print to billboards to the internet — to say nothing of product placements, dealer support, public relations, press junkets and massive political contributions.
Tesla Gigafactory Texas Stamping Press

In fact, considering that legacy automakers outsource most of the components of their cars, and in some cases even final assembly, to other companies, it’s not a stretch to say that marketing and advertising are their core functions.

But wait — there is one automaker that spends nothing on traditional advertising (although it does lay out for events and other marketing efforts). And how has this company fared in the marketplace? Well, it has rapidly grown to be the largest automaker in the world by market cap, its vehicles consistently outsell competing models in their segments, and it has one of the strongest brands in the history of marketing, right up there with Harley-Davidson or the Grateful Dead.

So, does this mean that massive advertising expenditures are not necessary for automotive success? Well, it sure looks that way. Does this mean that automakers have been squandering billions on unproductive activities for the last century? Well, that could be. What else could the companies have been investing their money in all this time, and how much could they have improved their products as a result?

A recent article from Visual Capitalist looks at the per-vehicle amounts spent on advertising and R&D by some of the major automakers, and it makes interesting reading. The data, which come from the companies’ official 10-K filings, cover the 2020 auto market.

Of the five automakers considered, all except Tesla spend substantial amounts on ads — an average of $495 per vehicle sold. All also invest in R&D to improve their products — but none spends anywhere near as much as Tesla does.

For every car it sells, the California trendsetter plows $2,984 back into R&D, which is more than the US Big Three invest combined. It’s 2.5 times as much as Ford, the second-place R&D spender, and almost 4 times as much as Chrysler, the R&D laggard. Interestingly, Chrysler is also the biggest spender on advertising — $664 per vehicle.

It’s not a coincidence that Tesla’s vehicles are the most advanced on the road, and that the legacy brands are widely considered to be at least five years behind Tesla in terms of battery and software technology. Could they close the gap by moving some money from the ad budget to the R&D center?

“The balance of expenditures between R&D and advertising is part of capital allocation, a decision every business needs to make,” writes Visual Capitalist. “Generally speaking, more R&D can improve and advance the quality of your goods or service, relative to your competitors. If executed correctly, it has the potential to lead to greater pricing power.”

In the more enlightened boardrooms, there’s some soul-searching going on these days. Auto execs are calling crisis meetings, and one even asked the industry’s tormentor, Elon Musk, for ideas about how to dig the industry out of the oily hole it finds itself in. Here’s one: try spending less on inane ad campaigns, and more on bringing your products into the 21st century.

Agelbert COMMENT: The problem with the advertizing MO in the USA at this time is that they lie consistently. Their norm is presenting products in a false, overly positive light, without telling it like it objectively IS (i.e.  with real world pros and cons). It used to be against the law to deliberately mislead the public with happy talk mendacity. But, like with most other common sense laws and regulations that kept corporate crooks from running roughshod over we-the-consumers, our government now just looks the other way. 👎😠

Tesla was right 👍 to not advertize. Word of mouth works well for them. In fact, not advertising actually makes people have a higher opinion of Tesla ⚡ vehicles simply because, as anyone that doesn't live in a cave without internet knows, companies with shoddy, inferior products advertize heavily to sucker the rubes.

I would not doubt that the 🐍 executives high up in the advertising con game have always taken a very dim view of Tesla's lack of advertising. I am quite sure that the 🦖Hydrocarbon Hellspawn, great friends with these bold faced liar ad execs, together with the "big three" 👿 automakers (soon to be the big three losers 🤠), have been involved, for at least a decade, in a CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY to push 😈 FUD hit pieces against Tesla EVs disguised as "news". This blatant Mens rea, with funding mostly from big oil, but also from the automakers in the USA, has been going on ever since Tesla showed they could manufacture and market Electric ⚡ Vehicles super susccessfully.

It seems that the blindfold on "Lady Justice", rather than ensuring Ubi jus ibi remedium, actually prevents her from seeing Big Oil's crooked thumb on the scales of "justice". 👎😠

If you don't think Big Oil can flaunt justice through blatant corruption of our judiciary, perhaps you need a reality check (see below):

October 28, 2021

Yesterday, human rights lawyer Steven Donziger was sent to federal prison for six months for fighting Chevron – and winning. Yet despite this, yesterday was also a nightmare for Chevron and a victory for environmental justice.

For years, Chevron sought to destroy the life of its nemesis who helped win the over $9.5 billion judgement against the company for polluting the Ecuadorian Amazon. Instead, it has inadvertently handed the movement its biggest victory since the verdict against Chevron was upheld by Ecuador’s supreme court in 2013.

Yesterday, I stood outside the U.S. Capitol alongside Representatives Chuy Garcia, Rashida Tlaib, and Jim McGovern and we all shared the same message: there is a reckoning coming, and Chevron will be held accountable for its crimes. Today, the House Oversight Committee heard testimony from oil company CEOs – including a smirking Michael Wirth of Chevron – as well as the American Petroleum Institute on their deadly climate change disinformation campaigns.

Meanwhile, Steven Donziger sits in prison as a warning that those who challenge corporate power in the U.S. are at risk for their work, and those who are particularly successful will be targeted, criminalized, and jailed. 😠

Check Out A Map Of The EV Universe

SNIPPET:

Recently I came across something really cool: a growing map of the EV industry. It shows the relationships between different manufacturers, suppliers, and everyone else who’s a player in building EVs. It’s called the Map of the EV Universe, and it’s definitely worth checking out — and even contributing to.

When I first opened it, I just looked at it and zoomed around, and just doing that, it’s a good educational experience. However, with just a few minutes of learning, there’s a whole lot more information you can visually get from it. Let’s start with the map itself:

XPeng Deliveries Grow 233% In September

SNIPPET:

If you’re following the EV revolution in China — and, increasingly, growing out of China — XPeng is one of the big names. While one EV startup after another has crashed on the runway or quickly crashed into a tree after getting airborne, there are two or three companies that have had a clean and inspiring launch. One of those is certainly XPeng, and the company’s latest sales figures are a testament to its intelligent management and high consumer demand yet again.

The company delivered 10,138 smart electric vehicles in October. Extrapolating out to one year, that would be 121,656 ⚡ EV deliveries a year — not too bad for a company that delivered its first vehicles about 4 years ago. An annual capacity increase from 0 to 100,000+ in 4 years is astounding. Furthermore, just looking at that 10,138 total, that’s a 233% increase over October 2020.

In the first 10 months of the 2021, 66,542 XPeng vehicles were delivered. As if the October result wasn’t good enough, that’s a 289% increase year over year!

Incidentally, at the same time that XPeng is comfortably cruising above an annual production rate of more than 100,000 vehicle deliveries, it surpassed 100,000 cumulative deliveries to customers.

The XPeng P7 has risen to becoming the 19th best selling plugin vehicle in the world in the first 3 quarters of the year, and 13th in September. Among full-electric vehicles, it was 16th and 11th, respectively.

Meanwhile, the lower-cost, more-mass-market P5 has hardly landed.

The sub 20k Electric Cars are coming! XPENG ⚡ P5

Elliot takes the hotly anticipated Xpeng P5 on a road trip to the Great Wall of China to find out if this new electric super saloon could be the best value EV on the market.

Sitting somewhere between Xpeng's G7 smart SUV and their luxurious P7, the P5 is a capable, comfortable and, most importantly, affordable electric car making it accessible to the masses. Whilst the design is more generic and lacks the finesse of the P7, this car is packed full of impressive technology that you wouldn't expect for such a bargain price.

The P5 also offers some unusual, fun features including the ability to make the entire car into a bed  and watch films on a projector screen, oh and a built in fridge! If this car comes to Europe, and we hope it will, it has the potential to completely transform the EV market.

Electric School ⚡ Buses in Vermont!

Electric school ⚡ buses roll out in pilot project in 3 Vermont districts

SNIPPET:

The Vermont Energy Investment Corp. plans to spend a year tracking emission savings from the program and monitoring the buses’ performance, Wallace-Brodeur said.

Barry Russell, transportation supervisor for the Champlain Valley School District, said students have been enjoying the quieter ride on the new Lion Electric Co. buses.

The buses have 100-mile battery packs, he said, but they can’t travel 100 miles between charges because of variables along the routes, such as hills.

Cold weather also shortens the battery range.

“As a pilot program, that’s what we’re trying to figure out, is how far they’ll go in the wintertime,” Russell said. “And how much you lose because of the cold.”

One of the buses is running routes that total about 90 miles a day, and the other runs about 50 miles daily. The former is set up to “push the limit,” he said, noting its driver must recharge during the day to complete his routes.

Russell said the biggest challenge with electric buses is not the vehicles themselves, but having the infrastructure to charge them.

The future of city transport? A LEANING 3-wheeled microcar | Carver ⚡ EV first drive

Fully ⚡ Charged Show 838K subscribers

Is it a car? Is it a motorbike? Is it a scooter? Whatever it is - we like it, a lot! This 3-wheeled fully electric Carver microcar is clever, comfortable and, most of all, amazingly good fun. The narrow design, with a lean ability that's out of this world (up to 40 degrees of lean) make this the perfect emission free city vehicle. Could this be the future of urban travel? One things for sure, it will certainly put a smile on your face.

Electric ⚡ Everything 🌞  — Wide Variety Of Electric Vehicles On The Market Today

SNIPPETS:

From the smallest skateboard-like device to huge ferry boats in Denmark, and everything in between on land, water, and in the air, today is about going ⚡ electric. ... ...

When Tesla started delivering the Model S in June of 2012, the electric vehicle revolution began. Tesla proved that you could make a very attractive high-performance electric car that had sufficient range at a price buyers were willing to pay, and it soon developed a network of Superchargers that made long-distance travel practical in the US.

By 2020, a massive $246.7 billion ⚡ EV market had developed. By 2021, Tesla was delivering EVs at a rate of a million a year, 100,000 vehicles were ordered by Hertz in October, Tesla’s market cap reached a trillion dollars, surpassed only by a few companies, like Apple and Google. Also, in Norway, over 90% of vehicle sales are now sales of plugin vehicles, 70% pure electrics. The rest of the world will soon follow.

⚡EVs Great & Small: Electric Buses For LA, Citroen Amis For A Greek Island

From LA to the Mediterranean, electric vehicles are the new normal.

SNIPPETS:

Electric Bus

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is installing a 1.5 megawatt rooftop solar system and a 4.5 megawatt-hour battery storage component to power one of the largest EV charging facilities in the US for commercial vehicles. “Los Angeles is on track to achieve a zero emission future and our investments in clean transportation systems are driving that progress,” says Mayor Eric Garcetti. “The more electric vehicles we put on our streets today, the more we can lower emissions to ensure a healthier, more sustainable tomorrow.”

According to Solar Power World, the project will benefit from a $6 million grant from the California Energy Commission. The solar and storage microgrid will power five Proterra 1.5-MW fleet chargers that will supply 104 remote EV charging stations. LA currently has 100 electric buses in its fleet and plans to become fully electric by 2028. LADOT selected Proterra and Apparent to install the EV-charging microgrid at the agency’s Washington Bus Yard. When complete, it will have a maximum charging capability of 7.5 MW. ... ...

Sustainability On A Greek Island

A half a world away, Citroen is teaming up with Syngelidis Group, French utility company Vinci, and Akuo Greece to bring zero emissions driving to the island of Chalki. It is donating 6 EVs — two Amis, two ë-C4s, one ë-Spacetourer, and one ë-Dispatch.

Citroen Amis

“We are really glad to collaborate with the Island of Chalki on this exceptional project. This collaboration is completely in keeping with the spirit of Citroen, an innovative and daring brand, closely connected with people in their daily lives and their mobility. We are committed to making electrification available to everyone and we believe that this is a source of progress within the society says Vincent Cobée, CEO of Citroen, in a press release.

“We are very proud to contribute to the transformation of Chalki into an island which will be autonomous, smart, and sustainable. This project will change the lives of a few for now but this is just the beginning. By helping Chalki to become a green economy focussed on sustainability, Citroën is paving the way for the future and is showing that electrification is the way forward,” adds Cobée.

Citroen ë-C4
Citroen ë-Spacetourer
Citroen ë-Dispatch
... ...

The Takeaway

Whether it’s a mammoth commercial charging installation in Los Angeles or a fleet of 6 electric cars on a tiny Greek island, the EV revolution is touching lives all around the world. We have to stop the flow of crud from the tailpipes of billions of vehicles if we are to have any hope of keeping the Earth habitable for human beings.

Transportation is only one part of anthropogenic climate change, but it is something that ordinary people have some control over. The idea that we could drive on ⚡ electrons instead of molecules was novel a decade ago. Today it is an accepted part of daily living no matter where you are in the world. Just imagine where we will be a decade from now!

Best Electric Lawn Mowers & Lawn Maintenance Tools (2021)

Here's what you need to know about making the switch to an electric mower.

SNIPPET:

Little decisions add up to massive consequences. Lawn equipment may seem like a drop in the bucket compared to cars, planes and trains, but opting for an electric lawn mower has a surprising effect on the climate.

Using a gas-powered leaf blower for an hour emits as much smog-forming gas as a drive from Los Angeles to Denver. Every year, Americans consume almost 3 billion gallons of gas on lawn and garden equipment — the equivalent energy use of over 3 million homes.

In the state of California, there are 14.4 million small, off-road engines (primarily used in lawn maintenance), leading California Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign a bill making California the first state in the country to phase out gasoline lawn equipment.

California's recent ban is emblematic of a larger movement of electric lawn equipment silently sweeping the country. If you're electro-curious and want to know the best electric lawn mower and lawn maintenance tools, read on.

Benefits of Electric ⚡ Lawn Mowers

Electric lawn mowers can be more expensive than the average gas mower, but don't get mowed down by the price tag. The benefits of electric lawn mowers are astounding, and they can pay for themselves in gas and maintenance savings within a few years.

Here are a few of the major benefits of switching to more eco-friendly lawn care tools:

Wireless FULL EV ⚡ charging has arrived! Exciting new tech breakthrough.

Just Have a Think 357K subscribers

Wireless charging is something that many of us have become used to for things like phones and electric toothbrushes. But it hasn't yet broken through into the world of electric vehicles, mainly because of the difficulty in sending power wirelessly over larger distances. That's all set to change now though, with the launch of the world's first fully electric wirelessly chargeable car, and several competing technologies aiming to gain global supremacy in electrifying our urban roads.

Agelbert COMMENT:
I wonder why they don't try charging wirelessly from the side of a vehicle, rather tnan from beneath. While it is true that side charging would not work for moving vehicles, the charging mechanism might require less protection from the elements (i.e. cheaper to manufacture), and be easier to access for maintenance or repair, if it is positioned on the side of a vehicle, rather than being embedded in the floor of a garage. Maintenance on the charger might be less of a chore and grid access for grid power demand balancing would be available while the car is parked. After all, vehicles spend most of their time parked somewhere.

Proposed Changes to the Federal EV Tax Credit Passed by the House of Representatives

SNIPPET:

To try and understand and document all of the key proposed revisions, I combed through the Rules Committee text of H.R. 5376: BUILD BACK BETTER ACT from November 3, 2021 (which as far as I know is the version of the BBBA text that the House voted on and passed).

Below is a summary table (download a PDF version) of the proposed changes to the EV tax credit for new 4-wheeled electric vehicles. There are separate provisions for 2 & 3-wheeled EVs, electric bikes, and used 4-wheeled EVs — of which this article will not cover.

The ⚡ car’s odd shape and small frontal area are great for achieving maximum efficiency, but it also plays a trick on our brains. In person, the ⚡ Aptera is really not that small.

Tesla Opens Its First Store In Puerto Rico

SNIPPET:

Tesla Motors Puerto Rico shared on Facebook that this will give customers a chance to get to know Tesla’s vehicles, since there are still residents who don’t know what a Tesla is. When they are in the Plaza, they will discover Tesla and the consultants will educate potential buyers on how to go online and buy their car.

“It’s like a store you walk into and no salesperson is going to harass you,” the President of the Tesla Owners Club of Puerto Rico, Javier Rodríguez, told El Nuevo Día.

He also spoke about the new units being delivered to the Tesla service center on Calle Calaf in Hato Rey. “Right now they are taking (the cars). You have to wait between two, four, five, or six months, depending on the model. If you go to the Tesla page, there they tell you how long it will be available.”

The Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) noted that there are around 918 active Tesla vehicles in Puerto Rico.

Agelbert COMMENT:
Considering the huge amount of gasoline that is now imported every single year to Puerto Rico, which is sold at a Hydrocarbon Hellspawn price gouging premium to the "captive" market islanders, it is gratifying to hear that Tesla is now there to save the smart Puerto Ricans a LOT of money on "fuel".

I imagine the gas station owners, along with all the other Hydrocarbon Hellspawn presently corrupting the government of Puerto Rico, will now try to make things as difficult as possible for those who want to free Puerto Rico from the pollution and price gouging hydrocarbon fuels CURSE by going ALL OUT to buy EVs and "fuel" them with energy harvested frrom the powerful tropical sun.

May the ⚡ EV enthusiasts TRIUMPH!
