Ford F-150 Lightning Pro electric work truck: 300-mile version will add $10,000

Optioned with the extended-range battery that will allow a targeted EPA range of 300 miles, the F-150 Lightning will cost just $49,974 in its base Lightning Pro work-truck guise, Ford revealed Monday morning.

That’s exactly a $10,000 premium over the $39,974 base price announced for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning last week—a price that doesn’t include an additional destination fee, or a potential $7,500 EV tax credit and other incentives.

Ford hinted that many fleet and work customers might not opt for the big battery, though, as they typically don’t buy more than they need. According to more than 145 million miles of Ford’s telematics data, 95% of daily travel adds up to less than 174 miles.

“These customers are extremely pragmatic, and they aren’t going to over-index on product features and benefits when it isn’t necessary to get the job done,” summed Ted Cannis, Ford’s general manager of commercial business. Cannis noted a “no more, no less” approach to winning fleet customers, and called the Lightning Pro “a serious truck for serious truck owners.”

The actual energy capacity of the two battery packs hasn’t yet been disclosed. The packs will use new “Nickel 9” NCM cells from SK Innovation, sourced from an American joint venture between Ford and the battery supplier.

The company has positioned the Lightning in a way that it hopes commercial and work customers will find irresistible, with a big emphasis on low ownership costs. It’s offering a fleet planning tool to crunch the numbers, including purchase costs, incentives, energy costs, and a projected 40% reduction in maintenance costs over eight years and 100,000 miles.

As Ford detailed last week, the Lightning is built with the same military-grade aluminum alloy body as the gasoline versions of the F-150, however a different frame helps accommodate the battery packs. Ford has tested the Lightning and its cooling systems for towing, hauling, and off-roading at temperature extremes, and it has underbody protection for the battery and dual inboard motors—chosen in type and location for toughness. 🤠

The base version of the F-150 Lightning Pro makes 426 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque, while the extended-range model makes 563 horsepower with the same torque rating. Payload ranges up to 2,000 pounds, and towing capability up to 10,000 pounds.

The F-150 Lightning comes only in a five-passenger SuperCrew layout, with a 5.5-foot bed length.

The Lightning’s frunk will hold 14.1 cubic feet and will carry 400 pounds, which Ford says adds up to eight bags of Quickrete. It’s water-tight and has a drain plug, as well as four 120-volt AC outlets and two USB ports. Altogether, the Pro Power Onboard power capability in the Lightning adds up to 9.6 kw, including two AC outlets in the cab and two in the bed.

F-150 Lightning Pro versions will come with easy-clean vinyl seats, and include Ford’s Sync 4 system with a 12.0-inch touch screen. A full-size spare  and Class IV trailer hitch  will be standard features, as will a set of driver-assist active-safety features.

Ford says that the Lightning will calculate its range based on terrain, weather, and even cargo and trailer load—using an onboard-scale system to monitor load. With a Power My Trip feature, the system can dynamically reroute the driver to the nearest charging station—part of the company’s FordPass app and network of 63,000 affiliated charge connectors.

Both through the touchscreen and via a remote Ford Telematics dashboard, operators will have access to remote preconditioning, remote locking and unlocking, vehicle health monitoring, as well as live tracking of vehicles, trip history, and energy usage, with a driver behavior and scorecard feature. The Pro, as with the other Lightning models, will get periodic over-the-air updates that could potentially improve vehicle performance.

On a 150-kw DC fast-charger, Ford says that the Lightning will get from 15% to 80% in 44 minutes for the standard-range battery or 41 minutes for the extended-range one.

Ford is assuming that work-truck operators won’t be fast-charging as much, but they’re providing multiple ways for a full overnight charge on 240 volts AC. With a 48-amp Ford Connected Charge wall unit, it estimates 10 hours with the standard-range battery or 13 hours for the extended-range one. With an 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro and dual onboard chargers on the extended-range version, it can get to a full charge in just 8 hours.

The latter system permits an Intelligent Backup Power function for the home—with additional hardware, including an inverter—and future Intelligent Power functionality that will help limit smooth home or business power demands around peak times.

Ford last week has also revealed that the XLT, more oriented toward personal use, would start at $52,974 and the range would cost up to about $90,000. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning lineup will arrive in spring 2022 and be built in Michigan.

EV tax credit 💰 boost, Tesla Vision fail, Tesla and Texas: Today’s Car News

Texas doesn’t budge for Tesla. Safety agencies and consumer groups warn about Tesla Vision in the Model 3 and Model Y. And will Americans be able to get up to $12,500 with a re-upped EV tax credit? This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

Legislation currently advancing in the Senate includes a provision to give the EV tax credit a big boost—lifting the sales ceiling that currently limits GM and Tesla, but adding provisions for U.S.-made and union-made, for a total of up to $12,500 per ⚡ vehicle 🤠. With a manufacturing credit, an expansion in eligibility to commercial vehicles, and a tech emphasis for the Rust Belt, it could be a meaningful piece of President Biden’s infrastructure push.

We’ve reported on Texas’ unwavering resistance to Tesla’s direct sales model since 2013, and if you expected the American electric automaker’s announcement of a mammoth assembly plant and battery factory in Texas to change that, you’re sadly wrong. With the Texas legislature not due to convene again until 2023 (Only meets in odd years, for 140 days!  :P), changing its state franchise laws doesn’t appear to have been a priority. That leaves Tesla with a convoluted process in what should be its showcase state—in which it needs to route cars and purchases through other states and deliveries through service centers.

And Tesla’s transition to its next-generation “Tesla Vision” system doesn't sound like it's being rolled out as intended. That's because it leaves owners without some of the key safety features that the carmaker still lists as included in their vehicles. That’s caused confusion for buyers and new owners and, this week, led U.S. safety agencies to rescind the Model 3’s safety accolades and Consumer Reports to caution on it. 

And over at The Car Connection: Although from an environmental standpoint 2020 brought good news—in fewer miles driven, as more Americans turned to telecommuting—pedestrian deaths increased at a record rate, with the largest annual increase on record, per vehicle mile traveled. :(

German ⚡ EV Brand Elaris Unveils New SUV Model

Elaris, the electric car brand from Germany, has added a new model, the Beo SUV, to its range. The Beo SUV vehicle is manufactured by the Chinese company Skywell and is positioned as a luxury model, set to cost €49,900 ($61,000). In Germany, there are subsidies available that can bring the cost down to €41,300 ($50,500).

The previous vehicles from Elaris, the Finn and Leo models, are both based on vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer Dorcen. Both of these vehicles are at considerably lower price points than the Beo SUV. The Leo compact SUV is €28,330 ($35,000) after the environmental subsidies have been applied, and the Finn e-small vehicle is €9,390 ($11,500) after subsidies. ... ...

With initiatives such as this, electric vehicles are continually being made more affordable, while at the same time also catering to the more luxury end of the market. The EV space is becoming increasingly busy, and this can only be a good thing.

Fiat 500 ⚡ EV 🌞

Fiat became the latest automaker to announce it will produce only electric vehicles  by 2030. CEO Olivier François noted the falling cost of batteries and said Fiat would bring to market electric cars that do not cost more than gas-powered vehicles. He said the company would start phasing out internal combustion engines by 2025, which he called a “radical change for Fiat.” The company also seeks to help improve access to EVs, charging infrastructure and air quality.

$200 Million More For Electric Vehicles, Batteries, & Connected Vehicles From US Department Of Energy

The $200 million in funding to national labs, subject to appropriations, seeks to make electric vehicle innovations in order to decarbonize the transportation sector, the top source for greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. The funding is open to DOE’s network of 17 national laboratories and is administered by DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Office.

This funding compliments VTO’s funding opportunity of $62 million for reducing emissions and increasing efficiencies for on- and off-road vehicles, announced in April 2021. Projects will require applicants to submit a plan for achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion objectives, including support for people from underrepresented groups in STEM, advancing equity within the project team, and producing benefits for underserved communities.

It’s Official: US Government Says Electric ⚡ Vehicles Cost 40% 💰 Less To Maintain 🌞

The latest information from the US government shows battery ⚡ electric cars cost less to maintain than conventional cars, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids.

So the next time someone tells you that ⚡ electric cars are too expensive, ask them if they would like the government to save $228 million in fuel and maintenance costs every year. If their answer is yes, the way to make that happen is to convert the US light duty vehicle fleet (not including the post office, which is a separate entity) to battery electric vehicles. 

Now imagine what doing that would do to the cost of those vehicles. 🤠

Electric Fire Truck? Oh, Yes!

It’s great to see new sectors starting to seriously go ⚡ electric. And we’ve got another one that’s in that camp — ⚡ fire trucks.

Rosenbauer is moving toward production of an electric fire truck named “Revolutionary Technology,” and Volvo Penta has announced that it has now partnered with Rosenbauer to supply the powertrain.

“By adapting proven technology from Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses, Volvo Penta and its customer Rosenbauer have introduced the world’s first electric fire truck, with a completely new vehicle architecture. This project is a true example of Volvo Penta’s customer-focused evolutionary approach,” the company writes.

“We announced our emob partnership with Rosenbauer in 2019, and we have gone from concept to start of production in record time,” says Giorgio Paris, President of Volvo Penta Industrial. “This is a milestone in our electrification journey. We see a growing demand for electric solutions in the market today and – through collaboration and pilot projects, such as this one – we aim to meet this demand and the expectations of the future.”
So, look out — perhaps we will start seeing electric fire truck stories like all of the electric bus stories we love to write about.

The technology being used is not exactly new tech — it’s proven tech that is used elsewhere but has been adapted a bit for the unique size and needs of a fire truck. For example, 4 electric motors are used instead of the typical 3, yet in a relatively compact vehicle. “All four electric machines have to be able to run simultaneously – two for propulsion, one for the range extender to provide extra battery power, and one for electric power takeoff, if fire-fighters want to rotate the foam pump for example.” Volvo Penta also created a new Active Cooling Unit (ACU) in order to fit it into the compact space necessary in a fire truck, and the unit pulls 600V of power instead of the typical 24V in order to cool the truck as well as the battery.

Three of these fire trucks have already hit the streets. They are in Amsterdam, Berlin, and Dubai — cities that have taken leadership positions in electric mobility before. “So far, the crews have been amazed at the RT’s battery capacity and the many other advantages of not having a large diesel engine – such as increase crew cabin space and more side panel storage,” the companies state. “We have developed strong working relationships with our customers over many years, which is key in the transformation towards more sustainable and new technology solutions,” Giorgio Paris says. “By working closely on different applications and in an array of sectors we can develop solutions – in a stepwise approach – that are reliable, safe, and create value, with the aim to bring an electromobility platform to our customers.”

With three on the road and working well — and making customers quite happy — the Volvo Penta and Rosenbauer are moving forward into the next step. “Now the first electric drivelines have entered the production stage at the Volvo Penta Vara plant in Sweden. Here the ACU is manufactured, and the system is kitted – loaded with software and packed together – to make installation as straightforward as possible for the customer.”
