The art of stone balancing, which involves balancing stones on top of one another in arrangements that appear to be physically impossible, exploits our powerful physical expectations about what might happen. Just in time for Halloween, scientists at NASA combined images of the most active regions of the sun on October 8 and discovered something awesome — the Pumpkin Sun. Using two sets of light wavelengths, NASA scientists were able to create the Halloween-like appearance, making the sun look like a carved pumpkin!

The “Potsdam Gravity Potato” Shows Variations in Earth’s Gravity

People tend to think of gravity here on Earth as a uniform and consistent thing. Stand anywhere on the globe, at any time of year, and you’ll feel the same downward pull of a single G. But in fact, Earth’s gravitational field is subject to variations that occur over time. This is due to a combination of factors, such as the uneven distributions of mass in the oceans, continents, and deep interior, as well as climate-related variables like the water balance of continents, and the melting or growing of glaciers.

And now, for the first time ever, these variations have been captured in the image known as the “Potsdam Gravity Potato” –  a visualization of the Earth’s gravity field model produced by the German Research Center for Geophysics’ (GFZ) Helmholtz’s Center in Potsdam, Germany.

And as you can see from the image above, it bears a striking resemblance to a potato. But what is more striking is the fact that through these models, the Earth’s gravitational field is depicted not as a solid body, but as a dynamic surface that varies over time. This new gravity field model (which is designated EIGEN-6C) was made using measurements obtained from the LAGEOS, GRACE, and GOCE satellites, as well as ground-based gravity measurements and data from the satellite altimetry.

Compared to the previous model obtained in 2005 (shown above), EIGEN-6C has a fourfold increase in spatial resolution.

“Of particular importance is the inclusion of measurements from the satellite GOCE, from which the GFZ did its own calculation of the gravitational field,” says Dr. Christoph Foerste who directs the gravity field work group at GFZ along with Dr. Frank Flechtner.

The ESA mission GOCE (Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer) was launched in mid-March 2009 and has since been measuring the Earth’s gravitational field using satellite gradiometry – the study and measurement of variations in the acceleration due to gravity.

“This allows the measurement of gravity in inaccessible regions with unprecedented accuracy, for example in Central Africa and the Himalayas,” said Dr. Flechtner. In addition, the GOCE satellites offers advantages when it comes to measuring the oceans.

Within the many open spaces that lie under the sea, the Earth’s gravity field shows variations. GOCE is able to better map these, as well as deviations in the ocean’s surface – a factor known as “dynamic ocean topography” – which is a result of Earth’s gravity affecting the ocean’s surface equilibrium.

Long-term measurement data from the GFZ’s twin-satellite mission GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) were also included in the model. By monitoring climate-based variables like the melting of large glaciers in the polar regions and the amount of seasonal water stored in large river systems, GRACE was able to determine the influence of large-scale temporal changes on the gravitational field.

Given the temporal nature of climate-related processes – not to mention the role played by Climate Change – ongoing missions are needed to see how they effect our planet long-term. Especially since the GRACE mission is scheduled to end in 2015.

In total, some 800 million observations went into the computation of the final model which is composed of more than 75,000 parameters representing the global gravitational field. The GOCE satellite alone made 27,000 orbits during its period of service (between March 2009 and November 2013) in order to collect data on the variations in the Earth’s gravitational field.

The final result achieved centimeter accuracy, and can serve as a global reference for sea levels and heights. Beyond the “gravity community,” the research has also piqued the interest of researchers in aerospace engineering, atmospheric sciences, and space debris.

But above all else, it offers scientists a way of imaging the world that is different from, but still complimentary to, approaches based on light, magnetism, and seismic waves. And it could be used for everything from determining the speed of ocean currents from space, monitoring rising sea levels and melting ice sheets, to uncovering hidden features of continental geology and even peeking at the convection force driving plate tectonics.

Here's something for you to ponder:
Wrong Brothers at Kitty Hawk to Mach 1: 1903 to 1955
Mach 1 to a space station along with a few Newtonian physics sling shot maneuvers to send probes hither and yon: 1955-2015...

I DON'T THINK SO. WHERE do you get the idea that technological progress SLOWED DOWN after Mach 1? I think it didn't "slow down". I think is ACCELERATED. But fossil duel profits had to be preserved. It's REALLY that simple, JD.

People here talk about how the elite are going to off the "useless eaters" with all kinds of devilish plans.  ::)  RE is RIGHT to claim we don't DO separate biospheres well.

They tried that in a Mars Colony setup right here on earth. ALL the atmosphere, water, soil, plants, people and so on were self contained in large concrete and glass building.

But they forgot to figure in the fact that fresh concrete absorbs a lot oxygen (concrete cures for DECADES after it first sets, absorbing oxygen at lesser and lesser rates as it cures).

Guess what happened to the scientists in the Mars colony biome?  Remember, these are dedicated, brilliant individuals.  ( They began to have arguments. They formed cliques and began increasingly hostile exchanges and hate filled and hysterical arguments and accusations. To avoid violence the experiment had to be aborted for a brief period.

As soon as the scientists exited the biome, they immediately recovered their civilized demeanor and were thoroughly chagrined by their video taped descent into sniping and false accusations of research sabotaging.

THEN they found that the oxygen level when the paranoia and sniping began had dropped below 18% because the concrete was sucking it up. The plants could not keep up. People were NOT getting headaches like typical anoxia victims get that would have warned them. No the instrumentation in the biome DID NOT register dangerous oxygen levels for some reason - it's in the article - they fixed it  (I've been there as a pilot - When you've got a headache and you are above 10,000 feet without on board oxygen, you KNOW why and you descend).

So, it is EASY to turn us into a bunch a even more barbaric and insane bastards than we are RIGHT NOW! :o  I can take every single person here and have them ready to go to war with anybody else over imagined paranoia by simply lowering the oxygen from the normal (about 21%) to 18% or lower (without telling them about it, OF COURSE :evil4:). They won't notice! They'll just turn into savages and eventually start murdering each other!

So the "elite" doesn't need to gas us with hydrogen sulfide or any other expensive plan. ALL THEY NEED TO DO is keep burning those fossil fuels full tilt while reducing the photosynthetic phytoplankton and flora through heated oceans and desertification. It's SIMPLE!  :evil4: It's also a GREAT BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY!  (
When word gets out that, unfortunately  ( , the 21% we are used to isn't "holding", SOMEBODY is going to make a LOT OF MONEY selling bottled oxygen.

OSHA defines as oxygen deficient any atmosphere that contains less than 19.5 percent. (

I'll dig up the article if you want. It's all DOCUMENTED. This is not hyperbole or scare mongering. Our intelligence, morality and civilized demeanor vanishes when we go below around 18% oxygen in the air we breathe, period. I suppose our body senses something isn't right and our brain proceeds to look for someone to blame for it. And that's with oxygen. There are other QUITE COMMON atmospheric gasses than bring about all sorts of "interesting" (depending upon your point of view) responses from Homo SAPS. We are VERY fragile.

UFOs and DEACTIVATED MISSLES: The TRUTH and the LIES told about those who told the TRUTH

Gentlemen of the jury, we are faced with the hearsay testimony of James Carlson through his father Eric Carlson versus the testimony of:

2)Dr. Patrick McDonough

1) Retired Lt. Col. Dwynne Arneson

2) Former Captain Robert Salas

3)A former missile targeting officer, then-Lt. Robert Jamison

4) Col. Walter Figel.

Eric Carlson was one of two missile launch officers who were present at Malmstrom’s Echo Flight on March 16, 1967, when all 10 of their ICBMs shut down.

While the senior Carlson claims not to remember any mention of a UFO being present at the time, the other officer, now-retired Col. Walter Figel, has told me (Hastings), and Salas, that he received a report of a “large, round” UFO hovering over one of the missile sites just moments after it failed, and shortly before the other nine malfunctioned as well. Figel also verified that other security personnel subsequently corroborated the presence of the UFO. All of these admissions are on audio tape and one may listen to them via links in my article “The Echo/Oscar Witch Hunt”, posted at The UFO Chronicles website.

Unfortunately, James T. Carlson believes his father’s version of events—that no UFOs were present at Echo Flight when the missiles went down—and has spent the last two years slandering and libeling anyone who contradicts this claim. James has further alleged that Bob Salas has completely fabricated the story of his own involvement in a second shutdown incident, at Oscar Flight, even though the other officer present at the time, retired Col. Fred Meiwald, has verified its reality.

The following is actual e-mail correspondence from Ray Fowler to James Carlson. After the posted correspondence you will find a Hastings comment that Ashvin will, no doubt, claim is evidence of bias (Read the main post by Hastings requesting info that I am posting beneath the correspondence to see that Hastings is not being biased or defamatory. )

This exchange was posted in UFO Magazine so Ashvin will claim it is not credible. Nevertheless, the e-mail rebuttal is factual evidence. Carlson has not been able to counter Fowler's assertions and accusations of deliberate falsehoods by Carlson on the notes Fowler himself sent to Carlson in DEFENSE of Salas's claims.

Rebuttal to Carlson from Ray Fowler:

James Carlson wrote: "Thanks to Raymond Fowler sending me all of his notes on the subject, going back to 1967 and including his correspondence to Salas in 1996, you can rest assured that I will prove that you and Salas are lying, and have been doing so for years."

Ray Fowler responds:

 "Bob Hastings" <>

I was recently sent something that James Carlson [posted on] your blog regarding some notes that I sent him to straighten him out re: his calling Salas a liar. I felt that I should respond.

I was under the strong impression that my notes defused Carlson's argument and attack on Bob Hastings. [The notes] read that because of my work on Minuteman, I had contact with contractors and subcontractors at Malmstrom who told me that Echo Flight had been shut down while a UFO was overhead.

They also mention that other UFO events were taking place on-site and that I had conversations with two ICBM officers [who] told me that their Launch Control Facility was affected by UFOs over the site. One event at Minot involved interruption of LCF equipment. The UFO was tracked on radar, it appeared to land and strike teams radio's were affected when they approached it. Jets were scrambled but could not catch the UFO. Dr. Hynek wrote about this event in the Saturday Evening Post and he had access to the USAF report. The ICBM officer that co-manned the Launch Control Facility visited Sylvania and when I was introduced to him by our contracts manager, the manager joked that I was interested in UFOs. The ICBM Officer said that UFOs were not a joke and proceed to tell us about the event above. The other ICBM officer had retired from the USAF and joined Sylvania. He found out that I was interested in UFOs and proceed to tell me that his Flight of Missiles went down sometime in 1966 when a UFO was overhead.

The other notes show that Salas had made an honest mistake by stating earlier that he was in Echo Flight during its shutdown. He assumed this because he years later read about my notes and concluded that this was the flight that he manned. Later, as you read the notes, Salas made enquires to others who were on base and found that he was in another flight that had gone down. It was an honest mistake.

I told Carlson that when I worked for the USAF/NSA, monitoring the Russians, that a number of memorable events happened but because of the distance of time, I could not remember who I was working with or what shift I was working, etc. Carlson calls Salas a liar because of a memory lapse which he later corrected. I think that Carlson protests too much and for some reason unknown to me is going out of the way to debunk UFOs no matter what the evidence. I corresponded with him for awhile but gave up in frustration because of his highly emotional responses and his unfairly calling Salas [a liar]. I think my notes have struck some kind of a emotional chord with him to come on so strong on the UFO Magazine Blog. I would like to see how he could prove Salas a liar by using my notes. I am convinced that any objective person reading them could never come to such a conclusion.

Ray Fowler

From Robert Hastings...

This is classic James T. Carlson. Fowler tells him "White" but James hears "Black." In James' world, up is down, left is right, and the sky is green not blue. But rather than seeking professional help, James goes on twisting facts with his twisted mind, and libels anyone who doesn't buy into his fantasies.

Robert Hastings

Now for the lead post from Hastings that led to the information posted by Fowler debunking Carlson's mendacity: (
The James T. Carlson Problem

Robert Hastings Requests Your Assistance

By Robert Hastings (

Over the past 37 years I have interviewed more than 120 former or retired U.S. military personnel regarding their knowledge of UFO incursions at nuclear weapons sites during the Cold War era. On September 27, 2010, seven of those individuals participated in a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. to discuss their personal experiences in such cases. The event was streamed live by CNN and thousands of articles and broadcast news stories—the great majority of them accurate and objective—have been generated worldwide over the past month.   Four of the press conference participants discussed UFO activity at Malmstrom AFB’s ICBM sites in 1966-67:   Dr. Patrick McDonough revealed that one night, while working as an Air Force geodetic surveyor at a not-yet activated missile site, a disc-shaped UFO had raced in and briefly hovered, silently, some 300-feet above his head.

Retired Lt. Col. Dwynne Arneson, the Officer-in-Charge of the 28th Air Division’s Communications Center at Malmstrom in 1967, told of reading a secret message about a UFO hovering over a missile site just before it and nine other ICBMs mysteriously malfunctioned.

Former Captain Robert Salas, a missile launch officer at Malmstrom, spoke of being on alert at a 10-missile group designated Oscar Flight, probably on March 24, 1967, when his missiles failed—moments after his head security guard had called the launch capsule to report a glowing oval-shaped object hovering over the Launch Control Facility. Salas has publicly spoken about this incident since 1995 and was the co-sponsor of the press conference.

Finally, a former missile targeting officer, then-Lt. Robert Jamison, spoke of being involved in the re-start (retargeting) of the Oscar Flight missiles. Jamison said that all of the targeting teams involved in the action were briefed before going to the missile sites and were explicitly told that UFOs had been involved in the ICBM shutdowns.   All of these individuals spoke out because they believe, as do I, that the U.S. government needs to be candid with the American people, and humans everywhere, about the reality of the UFO phenomenon and, in particular, the UFO-Nukes Connection.

Now, although these courageous individuals have come forward and divulged their involvement in still-classified incidents, in the hope of raising public awareness, a UFO debunker named James T. Carlson has been posting countless items online over the past two years, calling these veterans (and others who were involved in the missile shutdown incidents) liars, or worse. In particular, Bob Salas and I have been singled-out for his wrath. Carlson’s father, Eric Carlson, was one of two missile launch officers who were present at Malmstrom’s Echo Flight on March 16, 1967, when all 10 of their ICBMs shut down.

While the senior Carlson claims not to remember any mention of a UFO being present at the time, the other officer, now-retired Col. Walter Figel, has told me, and Salas, that he received a report of a “large, round” UFO hovering over one of the missile sites just moments after it failed, and shortly before the other nine malfunctioned as well.

In any case, the time has come for me to take inventory, in preparation for a possible legal action: While I am aware of numerous posts by James Carlson about all of this—on blogs at several websites—I’m certain that I’ve missed many more, given that they run into the hundreds at this point. So, I am seeking the reader’s assistance:

I am asking that persons who want to the truth about the incidents at Malmstrom AFB in 1967 to be established—once and for all—to scour the Internet and locate posts in which Carlson has referred to me (or Bob Salas) as a “fraud”, a “liar” a “hoaxer” or similar defamatory terms.  I am also interested in posts where James claims that he has “proved” that Mr. Salas and I have misrepresented the facts.

Those willing to assist me in this regard should send me links to the offending posts via   Thank you.

Robert Hastings (

Is James Carlson a credible debunker of the testimony of all the persons above, including Salas ?

The NAZIs knew about them.

Notes on Hermann Oberth

Space pioneer Hermann Oberth, was considered by many to be the most famous mentor of the late Dr. Wernher von Braun, the first director of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
"On the German side, I have to mention before all Professor Hermann Oberth who offered the world new basic concepts in the field of rocket technology," Von Braun wrote in 1959.

Oberth was born in Hermannstadt, Transylvania, the son of Dr. Julius Oberth, a physician. He attended schools at Schaessburg, Transylvania, until he was ready to enter the University of Munchen in 1913. He later became a professor of mathematics and physics.

In the spring of 1930, a young Wernher von Braun enrolled at the Berlin Institute of Technology and in his spare time assisted Oberth in his early experiments in testing a liquid-fueled rocket stage with about 15 pounds of thrust.
In September 1930, Oberth returned to a teaching post in Romania while von Braun continued experiments under the sponsorship of the German Society for Space Travel.

Fast Forward to Peenemuende:

Oberth rejoined Von Braun and his team of scientists working on rockets at Peenemuende during World War II.

There is evidence he was NOT just researching rocket propulsion in Germany with Von Braun and the other German scientists at Peenemuende. That evidence consists of patents for rather circular looking flying machines by German Corporations. BMW was one of those corporations. They probably didn't work too well.

Sure, the NAZIs experimented with all kinds of stuff that didn't work. In NAZI Germany, just like here  >:(, there was always money for new and improved war machines.  :( But that's not the point. The point is that they HAD PHOTOGRAPHS of flying disks and took seriously the eye witness accounts to such a degree that they DID try to duplicate the soundless, rapid movement this way and that, propulsion technology of these machines obviously not produced by human technology.

After the war, his research continued, and for a time he was engaged in rocket research for the Italian navy.

In 1955, he was invited to rejoin the rocket team. This time, Oberth came to Huntsville where he pursued rocket studies in the Technical Feasibility Studies Office of the U. S. Army Ordnance Missile Laboratories. In 1956, he transferred to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency as chief of Special Fields in the Research Projects Office. He resigned from U. S. government service in November 1958 and returned to Germany.

Von Braun later claimed that Oberth's book, "A Rocket to the Interplanetary Space," which was published in 1923, gave "proof that it was possible to travel to other planets by means of liquid propellant rockets."

Quite a bit happened after 1923 to expand Oberth's knowledge about HOW we could get there from here. Since the above quote is from NASA, it's just like them to pretend rocket propulsion was/is IT for Oberth, Von Braun and the USA.  ( Oberth AND Von Braun were keenely aware of the (not very successful - they did lose the war, after all) attempts to produce an electro-gravitic propulsion flying disk in Germany during WWII and in the USA (perhaps a tad more successful  ;D) after 1947. More on that after the rest of Oberth's distinguished biography.

Oberth, who visited the Marshall Center as recently as 1985, is also remembered by others in Huntsville. Bill Snoddy, now retired from the Marshall Center, went to work for the Army in Huntsville in 1958. Snoddy recalls that crowded conditions meant that many new employees ended up with their desks in the hallway of Bldg. 4484. "My desk was outside Professor Oberth's office," Snoddy said. "I was new and was only around him for a few months before he went back to Germany. But I remember that he was a very quiet person. He was very humble."

Snoddy also remembers seeing the many charts and exotic  (  illustrations in Oberth's office: "He was a visionary. Like Von Braun, he could communicate his ideas in drawings and writings." Recalling Oberth's close association with Von Braun, Snoddy said, "If Von Braun can be considered the father of the space age, then Oberth must be the grandfather."

Hermann Oberth died Dec. 29, 1989, in a hospital in Nuremberg, West Germany

First, let us return to the claim I made that bothered Ashvin, perhaps because it was so broad brushed and evidence free. That is, I said, in regard to ETs, that they are a space faring civilization(s), they are here, they are visiting, they are messing with everybody's nukes and they have technology far beyond human technology.

People that read my stuff know that, although I am not as fastidiously methodical as Ashvin is, I do not lie. So what? The fact that I don't set about to tell a tall tale does not mean I know what I'm talking about, does it? Of course. Integrity is not evidence of veracity; it merely means that I believe my account. Belief and evidence are two different things.

The evidence of what we see, hear and touch influences what we conclude about reality. We believe this or that is real when enough evidence warrants it. I believe the ET phenomenon warrants our acceptance that it is real. I do not share Ashvin's concern about people going all in to the 'ET masters of the universe/saviors' worship just because the OTHERS are smarter and more advanced technologically than we are. I never have worshipped ETs and I never will. But if some Homo SAPs can worship Elvis or some Wall Street Big Shot, I guess some poor saps would start building ET churches (even more than the whackos do now! ) if they had a saucer parked next to all the shopping centers with free electro-gravitic massages for all comers. I can see it now, "Come get your 'religious experience' at the ET Masters Church TODAY!".  :P  ;D

Reality is what it is. Just because a space faring civilization is more advanced technologically than we are does not mean I need to bow down and worship them. But given the Darwinian world view that the 'apex predator', 'winner of the big brain competition', 'highest technology bad ass is RIGHT because  he has the MIGHT', I can understand Ashvin's concern. ALL of us have been brainwashed with that predatory pap since we were children.

I have posted, in this forum, my eye witness account of light balls, larger than a man, car length or so away from me, popping into existence, floating by in a parking lot on the night of April 9, 1990. After popping out of sight, I saw them streaking silently through the night sky a few miles away (there was cloud backdrop - I have EXTENSIVE training and experience in measuring distances from clouds of moving aircraft and their velocity). I saw two of them in the sky. They moved at well over a thousand miles per hour silently. One of them did a hairpin turn that is quite impossible for an aircraft (OR a missile, by the way). They went back to the backlit cumulonimbus bubbling cloud, which lost its light and stopped it's bubbling. End of eye witness account.

Eddie thinks it was some high tech defense department stuff. But the fact that the huge UFO flap, with military evidence of radar, photographs and fighter interceptor chases was going on at exactly the same time halfway around the world (something I did not learn of for almost a decade!), convinced me that I wasn't hallucinating (no I wasn't 'on something' or drinking. LOL!) or that it was human technology. No I saw no flying disks or little green men. So? The subject is NON-HUMAN high tech and ETs,. The flying disks are a subset of that subject.

But let's assume that my experience does not provide any evidence for my claim the ET's are here and doing all kinds of things that we cannot stop them from doing.

Back in the early 1970s I read "The Interrupted Journey" about Barney and Betty Hill's account of an ET encounter. Weird stuff. I filed it away.

As an enroute air traffic controller in the 1970s, I would occasionally track on radar, during the midnight shifts, what we called "fast movers". We had broadband radar (no relation to broadband internet!). Broadband radar is non-digitized raw radar. It's low tech but tracks absolutely anything that moves, unlike the digitized radar we got in the late 1970s (and have had ever since). Unlike digitized radar, which is computer algorithm massaged by velocity to decide whether it is eligible for display (too slow, don't show - too fast must be false target - do not output to display - programmer inserts parameters - I did that when I was in programming later on), broadband shows everything.

A fast mover was distinguished by the trace. On raw radar, a target paints like a splotch. The antenna (ENROUTE radar - tower radars turn faster) rotates 360 degrees in about 58 seconds and paints it again in a different position. We radar controllers would figure how fast it was going from the distance between the two splotches. I trained for three years to learn how to interpret Radio Amplitude Detection and Ranging so spare me the hairsplitting. I'm giving you an abbreviated version, okay?

The fast movers were assumed by all brother controllers to be A) Secret US military aircraft (USA! USA!) or B) ET UFOs. We all knew about project Blue Book and the massive amount of baloney foisted on the public. We all had secret clearances. The gooberment was unconcerned about what we agreed to among ourselves because it was illegal for us to talk to the public about what we saw on radar or from control towers either.

We were reminded of that in a friendly fashion once a year in security briefings. I am not being sarcastic. UFOs were NEVER mentioned officially in security briefings by the stupidvisor crew chiefs (unofficially, they knew the score and said so - most of them were ex-USAF air traffic controllers...). We were obedient apparatchiks, as Surly has reminded me from time to time.   ;D

This WORLD that I lived in is strange to Ashvin and many others. They do not understand how people can be knowledgeable about the UFO reality and keep it a secret. Therefore Ashvin assumes we lack the evidence. No, we just liked keeping our jobs and staying out of jail (see CFS).  8)

We would NOT try to gather physical evidence for the same reason. But we talked. And we were honest with each other. I have said before and I'll say it again. People from a military background are not given to mendacity and tall tales, period. And wishful thinking and hallucination is not what hard boiled, nuts and bolts, do the math, USAF and civilian air traffic controllers that have many lives in their hands are about either.

Which brings me to Richard Diedrik (not totally sure of the spelling - feel free to use that as 'evidence' that my hearsay account doesn't amount to a hill of beans.   ;) Logical people will know better. ( Nicknamed "Dick", he got promoted to the enroute air traffic control training department staff where I worked in 1977.  I had been there a year and was the lead training instructor.

Dick was a former USAF tower controller. He was a chubby, affable fellow. He had been stationed at an Air Force Base somewhere in the Southwestern U.S. in the 1960s. We hit it off and I invited him over for dinner and drinks.
At my home, we talked about the fast movers, what the USAF might have and what those fast movers might be. We covered a lot of territory including military maneuver areas civilians know nothing about, blocked airspace where 'things' move (radar returns that ARE NOT false targets) when nothing is supposed to be there and more. I brought up Barney and Betty Hill.

Then he told me of his experience.  He was working the midnight shift in the tower cab on a USAF base in the late 1960s with another airman (enlisted rank). All military bases have a 24/7 OIC (officer in charge)  that mans a desk somewhere on base (not the atc tower). Whoever has the OIC shift wears an OIC band on his arm over his uniform (I saw my dad wear it from time to time).

Dick explained that they had some land marks (nearby water tower, some mountains, etc.) that they knew the exact distance to and height of. They used these landmarks to estimate the distance and altitude of visually sighted aircraft. This enabled them to call the sequence for inbound aircraft and tell the pilots who they had to follow and the outbound traffic to avoid as well.

Dick also explained that they had a tool that they held up to a visually sighted aircraft to estimate the size of the aircraft and the possible identity of the type of aircraft. The biggest one then was the B-52. Once they had the distance and altitude estimated from the landmarks behind or just below the aircraft, they would dial that in on the tool to get a ball park idea of the aircraft type.

Dick sighted a luminous object (not lights outlining it in the dark). He estimated the distance and altitude from the airport. They had no traffic reported in the area. He attempted to establish radio contact. No joy. The other controller was sacked out. He woke him up to ensure he had another witness to this flying object because he had to file a report on any airbase incursions from unauthorized aircraft.

The thing grew in size, indicating that it was approaching the base. He used his tool on it when had a good estimate of the distance and altitude. It was too big to be a B-52. It was approaching the base. It would not respond to radio calls. They called the OIC who told them to monitor the movements of the aircraft and file a report.

The thing got within a few miles from the airport. It was not moving erratically or particularly quickly either. But it was moving at jet aircraft speed. This was no lighted blimp. It was not bobbing up and down either. But the tool, now that the distance and altitude estimate was much more precise, indicated its size (in profile) just below five B52s. The USAF did not have aircraft that big then or now.

It got within a mile and stopped at about 500 feet above the runway. Still no radio contact and no jet engine noise whatsoever (Yes, jet aircraft sound is not heard well in towers. They have excellent sound proofing. But the lower rumbling always comes through when jets are within a couple of miles - this thing made no noise at all). It was saucer shaped in it was one big forking saucer! They called the OIC again, who told them to continue observing the craft and that he was now on his way to the tower cab. No orders were given to scramble chase aircraft.

The UFO hovered for about 10 or 15 minutes. Dick thoroughly eyeballed it with binoculars, as did his fellow controller. He could not discern doors, markings, tail number or control surfaces. It was totally luminescent and it was not transparent. It appeared to be made of some metal. The color of the luminescent surface was like a dim light bulb (grayish glowing white). There was no doubt in the two controllers' minds that this thing was a physical object. Radar tracking was confirmed.

It began to move. Within seconds, it streaked towards the mountains (not straight up but at a slight angle), becoming too small in size to sight visually. The speed was well over two thousand miles an hour from a dead stop. Dick called a nearby USAF radar tracking facility and asked them if they were tracking a high speed object. They confirmed that they were in the last few minutes but they had nothing at the moment. Dick did not say word one about what he had seen. When you are being recorded, you say only what you must say, period.

The OIC arrived and was briefed by both controllers. He told them to remain in the lower tower cab offices after their shift and not to discuss this further with EACH OTHER or anyone else.

The rest of the shift was routine. They did as they were told.

After their shift MPs arrived and his fellow airman left with them. Then some security personnel in plain clothes told him he was not to mention this incident to anyone under threat of court martial. He of course agreed but asked what could be done about this giant flying saucer. He was told it was probably a hallucination. He said the other guy saw the same thing. They spent a couple of hours brow beating him about the possibility of disciplinary action, a transfer to bumfork Alaska (or worse) and so on. He got the message and signed whatever they placed before him. They left.

When he got back to the barracks, his fellow controller's room was vacant. He asked about him and was told he was given a "hardship transfer" to another air base.

Dick was never scheduled to work a midnight shift on that base again. He never saw another flying saucer.

It was almost two years later when Dick found out where his fellow controller had been transferred to by chance. He had, of course, not made any official inquiries. He looked the guy up and the guy did not want to say beans about any of their shared experiences "the night before" he transferred out.  The look of naked fear on his fellow controller's face was all Dick needed to see. Dick made some comment about being glad that the hardship transfer had worked out and they parted friends.

Dick told me he was sweating bullets for years about that event, not because of ET, but because of the tough customers in security that he knew could ruin his career, put him in jail on trumped up charges or make him disappear.

I was dumbfounded. So, the brass knew and we were supposed to pretend there was nothing to see, move along. Dick nodded. Now I knew what our government did with the pilot UFO reports we had to submit to the stupidvisor (AFTER Blue Book had been shut down). Now I knew why most controllers considered making those reports a waste of time. Now I knew why our canned phraseology "Do you wish to file an official report of sighting an Unidentified Flying Object?",  ;) whenever a pilot claimed to see strange 'things', was part of MESSAGE to airline pilots that the gooberment did not want to hear it AND that their airline WOULD hear it (consider them a bit flaky if they got a rep for reporting strange 'things').

We talked a little about the technology and why we don't have a cool flying saucer to go to work in. No need for runways but we would still have airports for customs and such (ATC job security was always considered!  ;D) If smugglers go a hold of one, they would have a field day!  Also, there were a definite advantages for air traffic control if we could order a craft to stop in midair; no more holding patterns and easy sequencing! And no more worries about one aircraft overtaking another.

After pondering the implications a while and the FACT that we didn't have flying saucer technology, I said that TPTB either couldn't duplicate it or were not interested in duplicating it in order to not rock the transportation industry boat, so to speak. Dick agreed that was part of it but believed it was more about the USAF not wanting to admit they could not do beans about where ET went and what ET did. We both agreed that it was a relief that ET did not want to waste us.  (

We both agreed that major foot dragging by TPTB was not going to change any time soon and only ET would be able to force the issue if they wished to do so. Neither of us knew zip about what was going on at the nuke missile facilities from the 1960s on up when this conversation took place in 1977.

Ashvin, Dick was telling the truth. It's hearsay. RIGHT! You don't have to believe it. RIGHT!

But I insist that you are avoiding reality by believing the "others" are not here. They are here. They have been around for God knows how long. And their technology is fantastic stuff! The Germans recognized that before WWII.

The following quotes are from Space Pioneer Dr. Hermann Oberth. They were obtained in 1972 in an interview for a book about suppressed inventions:

LESS THAN ten seconds of video of a Fast Mover at the World Trade Center  July 24, 2000 (screen shot from above) :o. A human being would be would be instantly killed from that type of acceleration. That is what Richard Diedrik witnessed one night working in a USAF base air traffic control tower. It's NOT one of ours. It belongs to the OTHERS.

I thought somebody was chasing it but it looks like it buzzed the chopper doing the filming and took a hairpin turn, leaving some condensation trail when it neared the ocean. You need to view the super short video about three times before you get the total picture of what the shocked guy was trying to film. If it was a fake, it was a good one!  ;D (

This video is a longer version of the short vimeo clip I made. This one has no sound. If you haven't heard the sound, please do so in the vimeo clip. I believe the behavior of the lady and her words gives authenticity to the video.

Watch carefully as SOMETHING flies slowly behind the second tower before nosing out on the other side. After it streaks off, you can see it again, unlike in the vimeo clip. You can also clearly see it come VERY close to the chopper before doing it's hairpin diving turn. ENJOY!

Ashvin, if you had been one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, your name would have been Thomas.

Dr. Karla Turner was murdered by the CIA for exposing the Alien Greys. A Ufological researcher whose focus was alien, military, and para-military abductions, or MAAR (Malevolent Alien Abduction Research), in this lecture she discusses her findings after years of personal experience and having worked closely with many abductees.

Dr. Karla Turner was widely respected in the field of Ufology for her research on alien abduction. A brilliant scholar and professional educator, she earned a Ph.D. in Old English studies and taught at the university level in Texas for more than ten years. But in 1988, she and her husband and son endured a disturbing series of experiences and recollections that forced them to recognize that they were all abductees.

Many of the abductees Dr. Turner studied had at one time or another had alien implants removed by a surgeon. Her research found that the extraterrestrials known as the Alien Greys or Grey Aliens, beings from Zeta Reticuli (a binary star system in the southern constellation of Reticulum), who identify themselves as the "Reticulans" (Lam was purportedly a Zeta Reticulian), abduct humans and take them to alien ships and alien bases that were located underground and on the ocean floor. Some abductees even reported that they were, from time to time, kidnapped by human U.S. military personnel who worked with the aliens.

Dr. Turner, who was in perfect health and had no genetic history of cancers of any kind, died of an unidentifiable cancer on January 10, 1996, after being repeatedly threatened and harassed in an attempt to force her to discontinue her research. She was just 48. Since then, several other people involved in UFO abduction investigations have also experienced threats followed by highly unusual, fast-acting cancer.

Dr. Turner's alien abduction research was published in 3 paperbacks: Into the Fringe, Taken, and Masquerade of Angels ( ). Shortly after her suspicious and untimely death (murder), her publishing company was intimidated into halting the printing of Karla Turner's haunting conclusions about the agenda of the evil Greys, their alliance with the Illuminati, and it how it factors into the New World Order.

NASA Astronauts Recall UFO Encounters  :o

Buzz Aldrin, Edgar Mitchell and Gordon Cooper – all former NASA astronauts – recount the incredible events of the UFO encounters.

Buzz Aldrin

In an interview back in 2005 with the Science Channel, Edwin ‘ Buzz’ Aldrin indicated that he saw an unidentified flying object which followed Apollo 11 on the 1969 Lunar landing mission and may have contained aliens.

In a youtube video recording, Aldrin recounts the experience and the conversation with mission control:

“[There was] something out there that was close enough to be observed, and what could it be?

“Mike [Collins] decided he thought he could see it in the telescope and he was able to do that. When it was in one position, it has a series of ellipses. But when you made it real sharp, it was sort of L-shaped. That didn’t tell us very much.

Obviously the three of us were not going to blurt out, ‘Hey Houston, we’ve got something moving alongside of us and we don’t know what it is; can you tell us what it is? We weren’t about to do that, because we know that those transmissions would be heard by all sorts of people and who knows what somebody would have demanded? That we turn back because of aliens, or whatever the reason.”

The crew decided not to discuss it further until debriefing. Afterward though, NASA astrophysicist David Morrison reported that Aldrin spoke with him after the interview, and claimed it was probably a panel seperated from the craft at one of the various stages, a normal procedure.

Agelbert NOTE: The PROBLEM with the above half truth by Buzz (with that grin on is face while he says it  ;)) is that there WERE/ARE secure radio voice encrypted frequency channels to Mission Control    (, as you can see by the eye witness testimony HERE (Begin at 7:14 on video) ( Buzz is not being forthright. They certainly DID report the  UFO as an alien spacecraft to Mission Control. The rocket booster talk was filler for the Russians (probably). Buzz and the rest of the crew knew darned good and well the booster was WAY behind them! Mission Control probably put them up to this booster baloney to disguise all the extra chatter between the astronauts and Mission Control that was being detected by many earth based receivers (not just the Russians). NASA= Never A Straight Answer.  (

Edgar Mitchell

Edgar Mitchell flew in Apollo 14 in 1971 to the moon, recognised as the sixth man to set foot on the moon. His recount of events to WPTV tells that he is absolutely certain aliens are watching us and that the government is completely aware of this.

“I don’t know how many or where or how they’re doing it, but they’ve been observing us and here for quite some time. We see these craft all the time,” he said.

“I believe what I’m saying and I cite the evidence that I know,” Mitchell said.

Many UFO blogs and online enthusiasts cite a leaked transcript by a former NASA employee from after the Apollo 11 landing. The conversation takes place between the crew, mission control, and an unnamed professor.

“Apollo 11” is quoted: “These babies are huge … You wouldn’t believe it. I’m telling you there are other spacecraft out there … lined up on the far side of the crater edge.

“They’re on the moon watching us.”

Astronaut Neil Armstrong is quoted as saying, “We were warned off.”

The name of the NASA employee is Otto Binder, who is actually a famous sci-fi author, which casts some doubt on this transcript.

According to the transcript, when Armstrong is questioned further, he states:

"I can’t go into details, except to say that their ships were far superior to ours both in size and technology—Boy, were they big … and menacing. … No, there is no question of a space station.”

Gordon Cooper

Gordon Cooper is one of the original 7 NASA astronauts, piloting the last Project Mercury space mission back in 1963.

In 1951, he was in flight with the U.S Air Force in Germany when he witnessed many UFO’s in high altitude, in formation. They were flying much higher and faster than any man made aircraft, he states in an interview with Yolanda Gaskins in 1996 on Paranormal Borderline.

“We couldn’t get anywhere near their altitude,” he said. After filing a report, he explained, “the answer that finally came back months later is they were probably high-flying seed pods, which didn’t sound very logical.”

Afterward, in 1957, his military crew filmed footage of a saucer shaped UFO landing on a dry lake bed, sitting on 3 standing legs. When they approached the craft, it took off. The film was given to his superiors, and never saw the light of day again.

These incredible encounters are only strengthened by their official professions.

The concept of a RANDOM UNIVERSE is being taken apart step by step, along with the BELIEF that the law of conservation of energy applies to all matter AND that phi symmetry ordered subatomic particles cannot enter this universe ex nihilo. Non random creation = Intelligent Designer did/does it 24/7.  ;D

Golden ratio discovered in a quantum world

Researchers from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB, Germany), in cooperation with colleagues from Oxford and Bristol Universities, as well as the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK, have for the first time observed a nanoscale symmetry hidden in solid state matter. They have measured the signatures of a symmetry showing the same attributes as the golden ratio famous from art and architecture.

Universe may be on the brink of collapse (on the cosmological timescale)

Mar 23, 2015 by Lisa Zyga

The collapse mechanism builds on the physicists' previous research on vacuum energy sequestering, which they proposed to address the cosmological constant problem. The dynamics of vacuum energy sequestering predict that the universe will collapse, but don't provide a specific mechanism for how collapse will occur.

According to the new mechanism, the universe originated under a set of specific initial conditions so that it naturally evolved to its present state of acceleration and will continue on a path toward collapse. In this scenario,
once the collapse trigger begins to dominate, it does so in a period of "slow roll" that brings about the accelerated expansion we see today. :o   Eventually the universe will stop expanding and reach a turnaround point at which it begins to shrink, culminating in a "big crunch."

Hon Paul Hellyer ties it all in: The Illuminati / Banking Cabal is controlling the US and its minions through the usurped technology back engineered from the Roswell UFO, and if we don’t reach a critical mass soon to oppose their evil plans, it will be too late and we will be assimilated by these evil sold-out psychopaths. Something like that. I believe him more than all the politicians and their bobbing media heads combined. Be afraid, be very afraid people, this is real!

This 1985 HBO documentary 'UFOs: What's Going On" discusses the Roswell Crash, Project Blu Book, the 1975 incursions over the SAC bases, the Cash/Landrum encounter, the Travis Walton abduction, and the RAF Bentwaters incident to name only the most popular. It features J. Allen Hynek, Peter A. Gersten, Larry Fawcett, Stanton Friedman, Travis Walton, Betty Cash, and Vicky Landrum.
Excellent, informative and accurate video evidence of Flying saucers. Also, Astronaut Cooper, although equivocating when this HBO special was made, years later admitted he had filmed one land at a USAF, but down a tripod type gear, and take off again in the 1950s!.

He was ordered to send the film to Washington. He never saw the film again. The government claims no such film exists.  (  Cooper later on wrote to the U.N. that we ARE being visited by people not from this Earth in high tech space craft.

Reader Submitted Report

I want to share two things that happened when I was 13 and 14 years old. I am now 66 years old:

When I was 13, my mother and I saw a tear-dropped shape UFO, flying over Newport Rhode Island after dark. It went at a moderatly fast rate of speed high accross part of the sky and then just shot staight up at an incredible rate of speed and dissappeared.

My Father was a Naval officer, and my mother called the sighting into the Newport Naval Base.--Then about a year or two later, after we were transferred to San Francisco, My father was given the position of Naval Representative to the Joint Chiefs of Staff also working somewhat with the CIA.

One day he called me upstairs and because of my interest from a couple of years before, showed me a telegram that went through the Joint Chiefs of Staff and CIA, describing a sighting of a UFO entering the ocean a a certain latidude and longitude. He told me that they received these telegrams two or three times a week, always in the same location of the ocean. He said the telegram was classified and for me to tell no one else. My father passed away in 2000, and my mother gave me permission to share this. I found out last year that my brother was also shown the telegram.

This, from the FBI, is also interesting...

Article and video discusses how TPTB tried to spin this PROOF of ET and their spacecraft provided BY the FBI SIXTY FIVE YEARS AGO!  :o

62718, AN1, CAT 1, PT, UNKNOWN
Event Date: 05.15.1999
SHAPE: Unknown
Investigator: Chuck Reever
Disposition: UNKNOWN UAV

Witness Statement:

In the summer of 1999, I was a F/A-18 pilot flying with a tanker escort to Rota Spain. Our mission was to move 12 of our aircraft to support NATO Operations in combat missions against the Serbian armed forces in Kosovo.

While flying across the Atlantic with a block altitude of FL260-FL290 and approximately 900 nm west of the Azores I had my radar scanning the ocean for ships. I had the radar running in SEA mode to track ships. This mode will give us a contact on the radar display and also a vector of the direction of travel and its speed. My radar picked up a contact 80 nm in front of my aircraft and 20 degrees to the right.

What struck me, was this contact was at 3,000 feet and tracking slowly east at about 10-50 knots. That was very unusual. I watched it for a few moments changing direction and altitude as low as 1,000 feet. I decided to try to lock the object with my radar. I put the radar back in air to air mode and I got a steady lock at 60 nm but what happened from there was truly shocking. The object started to accelerate and climb. Within 13 seconds, which is a full sweep of the Hornet APG-73 radar, the object went to over 1,000 knots and climbed to 70,000 feet and still climbing. My radar continued its lock until the object gimbaled the radar and I lost contact. This object reacted to my radar and it appeared to know that it was being tracked. The radar was fully functional. I never saw the object but it did come close to me, less than 20 nm, as it accelerated and climbed. The weather was cloudy with about three miles of visibility.

As a highly trained fighter pilot, I know that this was not a radar anomaly. I was in shock that this happened. I did not tell anyone in the flight for fear of ridicule. My background was an F/A-18 pilot and flew  F-16's with the Air National Guard. It has been some time, but I remember this experience as if it was yesterday.

Is It Always Snowing or Raining in Antarctica?  ???

Antarctica, known as the coldest place on earth, is also the driest. Some areas of Antarctica haven't seen rain or snow in millions of years.

Although the average precipitation for the whole of the continent varies between 1.9 inches to over 7.8 inches (50 - 200 mm) per year, there are dry valleys which receive less than 0.4 inches (10.16mm) per year. The temperatures are also extremely cold in these areas. For example, -13 degrees Fahrenheit (-25 degrees Celsius) is the norm in December and January, which feels even colder due to strong winds. This means that although precipitation is low, snow never really melts and these areas may look the same for millions of years.

Survival in the dry valleys of Antarctica is nearly impossible, but it proved to be of use to scientists in 2009, who visited these parts to test scientific equipment to be used on the surface of Mars. In dryness and coldness, Antarctica is the most similar place to Mars on earth. The average temperature on Mars is about -80 degrees Fahrenheit (-60 degrees Celsius).

More about Antarctica:

•The coldest temperature ever recorded was at Vostok station, Antarctica in 1983, measuring -128 degrees Fahrenheit (-89 degrees Celsius).

•Antartica is also the windiest place on earth. Sometimes winds blow at 200 miles (320 kilometers) per hour.

•Antarctica has the largest single sheet of ice on earth, and if it were to melt, sea levels around the world would increase 16 feet (5 meters) on average.

25 Scientific Facts That Will Blow Your Mind

The one that flabbergasted me was the statement that the human body puts out more heat per unit volume than the sun.  ( I find that hard to believe. I am sure that they used Hess's law to come up with that.   (

Hess's law is a brute force INDIRECT measurement of heat (i.e. enthalpy=energy) of formation of chemical compounds that ignores magnetic forces, nuclear physics forces AND biological enzyme heat reduction in chemical reactions.

I've gone round and round with my wife the chemist on this (and RE at the diner too!).  (

My point is that the enzymes reshape the substrate temporarily, thereby making it a DIFFERENT chemical compound energywise with the same elements in number and mass. This enzyme massaged chemical compound has BOTH a lower energy of activation AND a lower amount of OVERALL heat released THROUGHOUT the reaction when the reaction on it takes place.

Hess's law looks at chemical bonds as having a FIXED amount of energy needed to break them (exothermic) or make them (endothermic). This assumption is valid in non-living chemical processes. I claim that it is NOT valid in living processes.

I claim that enzymes, otherwise known as catalysts, REDUCE the total energy output of a biological chemical reaction, even though the enzyme itself is not changed. This flies in the face of accepted thermodynamics and the Law of Conservation of Energy. So, I have a very difficult time convincing chemists that I have a valid argument.  :(

Nevertheless, as the above video points out, the cause of gravity (which is, like magnetism, a form of attraction of masses) is not well understood. No scientist will claim that your refrigerator magnet uses any energy to remain sticking to your refrigerator against the forces of gravity.

But the same scientist must admit that it will take energy for you to pull it off.  ;D

My hypothesis is supported by science in regard to the mechanism that enzymes (biological catalysts far more complex than the industrial catalysts our crude heat, beat and treat industrial processes rely on ) use to lower the energy of activation to start a chemical reaction.

But, the second part of my hypothesis, which states that the enzyme, due to the magnetic distortion it forces on a chemical compound substrate WITHOUT any measurable release of energy, lowers the overall  enthalpy=heat=energy, NOT just the activation enthalpy=heat=energy of said chemical reaction, PARTICULARLY in exothermic (energy release instead of energy absorbing) chemical reactions, is rejected because it gives Hess's Law a huge headache. That "headache" is that it appears to violate the "law" of conservation of energy.  ;D

So, go ahead, pull that magnet off the refrigerator and tell me you used the same amount of energy to put it there as to pull it off.   (

So, go ahead, tell me an industrial catalyst on exactly the same chemical compound found in the human body, according to Hess's Law, releases exactly the same amount of energy when a biological enzyme acts on it to produce exactly the same products as the industrial catalyst does.  (

Hess's Law is the basis of virtually all the assumptions on thermodynamics that science has today. It is very useful because of the difficulty of measuring the energy released by some chemical reactions.

But if what goes on inside us was as Hess's Law of enthalpy of formation DICTATES, we would exceed the outer temperature boundary required by homeostasis and die. There is no homeostasis on the sun. Homeostasis is sine qua non to life. We do not overheat because enzymes apparently get around the law of conservation of energy by some mechanism that we do not understand. I am not saying that they ACUALLY violate the law of conservation of energy. I am saying that the law of conservation of energy is improperly accounted for in Hess's "Law".

You may assume that I am all wet. But someday, science will admit that enzymes, due to extremely complex magnetic arrangements in their design, save far more energy during their existence as biological chemical reaction mediators than was used by the human body to manufacture them.

Unknown alien rock found in Swedish quarry

June 14, 2016

All fossil meteorites found are so called L-chondrites that originate from the asteroid that broke up, but now a single fossil meteorite has been found that is of a kind not known among the more than 50,000 documented meteorites that have fallen on Earth in recent times. This may be the first documented example of an extinct meteorite, i.e. a type of meteorite that does no longer fall on Earth because its parent body was consumed in collisions. Credit: Birger Schmitz.

A morsel of never-before-seen alien rock has been dug up in a limestone quarry in Sweden, where it had lain deeply buried for about 470 million years, scientists said Tuesday.
The biscuit-sized remains are unlike any other meteorite found on Earth to date, and may shed light on the history and formation of our Solar System, they reported in the journal Nature Communications.

Dubbed Oest 65, it is thought to be a splinter of a potato-shaped rock some 20-30 kilometres (12-19 miles) wide, which had smashed into another much larger body, sprinkling our adolescent planet with debris.

Previously, remnants of only one of the two rocks had been found, in the form of meteorites called chondrites.

But now scientists believe they have unearthed a piece of the second space orb, boosting the theory of a major smash-up between two galactic travelers.

It is thought that the breakup of the bigger chondrite body, about 100-150 km across, had yielded a major cluster of rocky debris in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The resultant flux of extraterrestrial material, some of which rained down on Earth, coincided with a massive expansion of invertebrate ocean life at a time our planet's landmass was largely fused together into a supercontinent called Gondwana.

"The single meteorite that we now found... is of a type that we do not know of from today's world," study co-author Birger Schmitz of Lund University in Sweden told AFP.

Along with about 100 chondrite pieces discovered to date, the new alien fragment had sunk to the floor of an ocean covering parts of what today is a limestone quarry in southern Sweden.

In marine limestone that formed on the sea-floor 470 million years ago more than 100 fossil meteorites have been found in the Thorsberg quarry, southern Sweden. The many meteorites attest to one of the most violent events in the solar system the past 3 billion years, when a hundred kilometer large asteroid broke up from a collision in the asteroid belt. Credit: Birger Schmitz.

'Extinct' space rock? ???

"The object contains very high concentrations (compared to Earth materials), of elements such as iridium, which is very rare on Earth," Schmitz explained by email.

"The meteorite also contains high concentrations of rare isotopes of the element Neon"—and in different proportions than in chondrites.

The team measured telltale signs of cosmic radiation in the meteorite to determine how long it had flown around in space before crashing to Earth.

"Our meteorite fell 470 million years ago," said Schmitz—more or less the same period as the chondrite fragments.

The mysterious morsel "may be a fragment of the impactor that broke up the (chondrite) parent body," concluded the study.

A meteorite discovered in a Swedish quarry is unique and distinct from other meteorites. It appears to be a relic of a massive collision in the asteroid belt 470 million years ago that send debris raining to Earth during the Ordovician Period. In this image, the black 'fossil' meteorite is preserved in slate from the quarry. Credit: Qing-zhu Yin, UC Davis

The extraterrestrial lander may be the first documented example of an "extinct meteorite"—so called because it's parent body had been entirely consumed by space collisions, meaning no more fragments can fall to Earth today.

Chondrites still drop to our planet every now and then.

The findings mean that today's meteorites—on which scientists base much of their assumptions about our Solar System's formation—are not fully representative of what is, and once was, out there.

"Apparently, there is potential to reconstruct important aspects of solar-system history by looking down on Earth sediments, in addition to looking up at the skies," wrote the study authors.

Illuminate Lightbulbs Wirelessly: DIY Slayer Exciter

 by tanner_tech in wireless

Circuits Contest 2016

Have you ever wanted to be able to control the powers of wireless electricity?    (   Have you ever wanted to build something that can light CFL bulbs from your hand?   (

If so, then this is the perfect instructable for you. In this instructable, I will show you how to build a device called a slayer exciter. The video below will accompany this instructable with a visual demonstration of how it works.

Lets get started!

Step 1: How it Works 8)

A slayer exciter is basically an oscillator that has a frequency based on the LC tank circuit formed by the secondary coil and the parasitic capacitance of the top load. So now to how this circuit works.

First, when power is applied to the circuit, the current flows into the base of the transistor, turning it on. When the transistor turns on, it lets power flow through the primary coil. This induces a current into the secondary coil, which flows into the base of the transistor, turning it off.

When the transistor turns off, the magnetic field collapses letting current flow back into the base of the transistor from the resistor. This cycle repeats many times a second.

Think of this circuit as a swing, if you push somebody an a swing, they will swing forward and backwards and oscillate. (

Every time you push the swing, it oscillates, but you have to push it at the right time, or it will lose energy.

The circuit functions like the person pushing the swing. The transistor "pushes" the secondary coil with a magnetic field at the exact right time. This circuit oscillates at about 398 kilocycles.

The constantly expanding and collapsing field creates a powerful RF field around the exciter. This causes the electrons in the CFL to bounce around and strike the phosphors in the glass, lighting the bulb. It creates high voltage because of the turn ratio of the primary to secondary coil. Now to actually building the slayer exciter.

Video below and further instructions at link:  (

Agelbert NOTE: Always remember that electrical current is never induced by a magnetic field, be it electro-magnetic or naturally magnetic. The electrons in a conductor of electricity move only when a magnetic field it is subjected to collapses. So, you have rebuild the magnetic field and allow it to collapse repeatedly to keep the current flowing to light a CFL bulb, LED and/or, with some fancy circuitry, to  run an electric (OF COURSE!  ;D)  motor. At present, sending the current through wires requires less energy than wirelessly, except in some very limited applications.

( Water inside carbon nanotubes turns solid at boiling temperatures, MIT researchers discover

By Shawn Knight on Dec 3, 2016, 11:00 AM
mit, carbon nanotubes, freeze, water, ice, h2o

It’s common knowledge that water freezes at zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) and boils at 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit) in normal conditions. When confined within a carbon nanotube, however, all bets are off.

While conducting an experiment that involved trying to send electric currents through water inside of carbon nanotubes, a team of chemical engineers led by Professor Michael Strano at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) noticed some unexpected behavior.

It’s been known for a while now that when water is confined in very small spaces, its freezing and boiling points can drop by as much as 10 degrees Celsius. What the team at MIT observed, however, was quite the opposite.  (

Inside tiny carbon nanotubes, they witnessed water solidifying at a minimum temperature of 105 degrees Celsius – well above its normal boiling point.

The diameter of the nanotubes played a significant role in the water’s behavior. The difference between tubes measuring 1.05 nanometers and 1.06 nanometers across changed the freezing temperature by tens of degrees.

Equally as puzzling is the fact that water could even enter nanotubes at all as they’ve long been thought to be hydrophobic.

Agelbert NOTE: "Hydrophobic" means water "hating". Your raincoat is usually coated with a hydrophobic substance. Wax is hydrophobic. "Hydrophilic" is water "loving". The way the water curves up on the edge of a glass is evidence that glass is hydrophilic. Water (H2O), of course is attracted to itself (water molecules inside tree capillaries can be stretched 25 atmospheres and still attract each other as long as the capillary is not exposed to the outer atmosphere. That is how water moves from tree roots to the leaves.

More research will be needed but Strano thinks the discovery could lead to the creation of “ice wires,” or efficient highways to transport protons as water is around 10 times better at conducting protons compared to standard conductive material.

Agelbert NOTE: Some good comments that might explain this strange property of carbon nanotube enclosed H2O:

captaincranky TechSpot Addict

"My immediate thought was, if this occurs with water..what other changes could occur? Relooking at cold fusion where speculation was the molecular space might have allowed nuclear interaction. Other speculation whenever I find that roll of Reynolds.
Well, I think "freezes" might be misapplied terminology."

I'm going to take a wild, uneducated guess here, and postulate the water isn't "frozen" per se. Given the 3 elements in the mix, carbon, hydrogen, & oxygen, the scale at which this is happening, and the amount of molecular activity brought on by applied heat, the water is likely "mimicking" or "masquerading" as, a carbohydrate.

The diameter of the nanotube is only 5 water molecules across. But these researchers

Say that you need at least 275 molecules to form an ice crystal. So the 'solid' phase of water cannot occur in the confined space of a nanotube. Rather a different 'boundary ' phase of carbon-water forms

It is probably the hydrophobic nature of the CNTs that forces the solidification. As you increase the energy of the particles, they find themselves bound inside of the CNT and unable to leave. This would likely significantly increase the number of collisions between H2O molecules, giving the appearance of being a solid, without needing as many molecules as is normally required to form an Ice crystal as Skypickle points out.

Still, I wonder why they were putting water inside of CNTs in the first place. The common conception is they are hydrophobic, plus CNTs already display ballistic conductance of both electrical and thermal energy. I find it hard to believe that anyone would go 'yeah, lets add thermally *capacitive* material (water) to increase thermal *conductivity.*' I think they were trying for something else entirely, which they aren't ready to publically talk about yet. My guess would a new kind of thermal heat sink, with both high conductivity from the CNTs and high capacitance from the H2O - and this would explain why they brought it up to such high temperatures in the first place, since CNTs don't heat up readily when an electric current is applied.

My thoughts are that the size of the nanotube is somehow forcing the molecules of water to align in a fashion where they do not move - thus giving the appearance of a crystallized set of molecules.

Somewhere in non-available memory was some reading on crystal forming temperatures of water with additives such as salt and something to do with 'absolutely pure' water having different bonding reactions than just distilled water. I'm wondering if the size of the nanotubes creates an 'absolutely pure' water condition and whether that affects 'hydrophobic' as used to describe the carbon molecules. I know when I don't know so I'm sending this article to a friend 'Saint Jack' to see if he knows anything.

Why Planet Nine has such an unusual orbit is the next question – well after the main question, of course: where is it? About the only thing that surprises me is that so far Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos hasn't done an IPO underwritten by The Squid to  get the Big Elevator Corporation (Stock Ticker code BEC) off the ground. (pun intended)  ::)

Why water drops splash: a non-trivial mystery explained

James Sprittles, Assistant Professor in Mathematics, University of Warwick

March 22, 2017

Credit: Pixabay

From the raindrops that soak you on your way to work to the drops of coffee that inevitably end up on your white shirt when you arrive, you’d be forgiven for thinking of drops as a mere nuisance.

But beneath a mundane facade, droplets exhibit natural beauty and conceal complex physics that scientists have been trying to figure out for decades. Recently, I have contributed to this field by working on a new theory explaining what happens to the critical thin layer of air between a drop of water and a surface to cause a splash.

At just a few thousandths of a second, the lifetime of a splashing drop is too rapid for us to see. It took pioneering advances in high-speed imaging to capture these events – the most iconic being Edgerton’s Milk Drop Coronet in 1957. These pictures simultaneously captured the public’s imagination with their aesthetic nature while intriguing physicists with their surprising complexity. The most obvious question is why, and when, do drops splash?

Nowadays, cameras can take over a million frames per second and resolve the fine details of a splash. However, these advances have raised as many questions as they have answered. Most importantly, remarkable observations, coming from the NagelLab in 2005, showed that the air surrounding the drop plays a critical role. By reducing the air pressure, one can prevent a splash (see second video). In fact, drops which splash at the bottom of Mount Everest may not do so at the top, where the air pressure is lower.

Ethanol drop at low pressure doesn’t splash.

The discoveries created an explosion of experimental work aimed at uncovering the curious details of the air’s role. New experimental methods revealed incredible dynamics: millimetre-sized liquid drops are controlled by the behaviour of microscopic air films that are 1,000 times smaller.

Notably, after a liquid drop contacts a solid it can be prevented from spreading across it by a microscopically thin layer of air that it can’t push aside. The sizes involved are equivalent to a one-centimetre layer of air stopping a tsunami wave spreading across a beach. When this occurs, a sheet of liquid can fly away from the main drop and break into smaller droplets – so that a splash is generated.
From a coffee stain all we can see is the outcome of this event – a pool of liquid (the drop) surrounded by a ring of smaller drops (the splash).

Major breakthrough

Experimental analyses have produced incredibly detailed observations of drops splashing. But they do not establish why the drops splash, which means we don’t understand the underlying physics. Remarkably, for such a seemingly innocuous problem the classical theory of fluids – used to forecast weather, design ships and predict blood flow – is inadequate. This is because the air layer’s height becomes comparable to the distance air molecules travel between collisions. So for this specific problem we need to feed in microscopic details that the classical theory simply doesn’t account for.  :o  ;D

How a microscopic layer of air affects water droplets.

The air’s behaviour can only be captured by a theory originally developed for violent aerodynamic gas flows – such as for space shuttles entering the Earth’s atmosphere – namely the kinetic theory of gases. My new article, published in Physical Review Letters, is the first to use kinetic theory to understand how the air film behaves as it is displaced by a liquid spreading over a solid.

The article establishes criteria for the maximum speed at which a liquid can stably spread over a solid. It was already known that for a splash to be produced, this critical speed must be exceeded. If the speed is lower than that, the drop spreads smoothly instead. Notably, the new theory explains why reducing the air pressure can suppress splashing: in this case, air escapes more easily from the layer and provides less resistance to the liquid drop. This is the missing piece of a jigsaw to which numerous important scientific contributions have been made since the experimental discoveries of 2005.

Important applications

While being of fundamental scientific interest, an understanding of the conditions that cause splashing can be exploited – leading to potential breakthroughs in a number of practical fields.

One example is 3D printing where liquid drops form the building blocks of tailor-made products such as hearing aids. Here, stopping splashing is key to making products of the desired quality. Another important area is forensic science, where blood-stain-pattern analysis relies on splash characteristics to provide insight into where the blood came from – yielding vital information in a criminal investigation.

Most promisingly, the new theory will have applications to a wide range of related flows where microscopic layers of air appear. For example, in climate science it will enable us to understand how water drops collide during the formation of clouds and to estimate the quantity of gas being dragged into our oceans by rainfall.

Do keep this in mind the next time you splatter coffee drops across your desk. Take a moment to admire the pattern and appreciate the underlying complexity before cursing and heading for your “mopper upper” of choice.  ;D

What is Laser Cooling?     (

This video will introduce you with the a laser cooling lab. The working and cooling of hot air up to absolute zero is also shown here.  :o  (

Agelbert NOTE: This is a BIG deal. WHY? Because, as much as I hate to admit it, this provides a way to escape the temperature effects (but NOT the ocean acidification effects!) of global warming.

This counterintuitive process gives the appearance of violating the second law of thermodynamics because it uses laser energy to COOL a gas or liquid.

The German scientist Rudolf Clausius laid the foundation for the second law of thermodynamics in 1850 by examining the relation between heat transfer and work. His formulation of the second law, which was published in German in 1854, is known as the Clausius statement:

Heat can never pass from a colder to a warmer body without some other change, connected therewith, occurring at the same time.

But laser cooling doesn't violate the above law, of course. ;D  So, how does it work it's magic of cooling, instead of heating, while ADDING energy to a system? ???

A tuned set of lasers is fired at a gas or a liquid. This uses energy. BUT the targeted gas or liquid does NOT heat up in this case; it RADICALLY COOLS!

Temperature is, as everybody knows, just a measurement of how fast the atoms/molecules are moving around in a given 3 dimensional space. Faster moving atomic mass is hotter while slower is cooler. Absolute zero temperature is full atom stop (in theory  ;)).

The trick is making use of a weird property of photons which enables them to have momentum WITHOUT mass. The photons hit the target, transfer their momentum (but no mass) and SLOW the molecules down, making them real cold real fast.

The casual observer will scratch his head (  and ask WHY the momentum doesn't make some of the atoms/molecules go faster (by hitting them from behind instead of head on), since molecules are going in every which way all the time. ???

I mean, shouldn't it all sort of even out?  (

THAT has to do with photon frequencies. All atoms/molecules have absorption frequencies. A CO2 molecule will absorb high energy photons (UV band) and emit lower energy photons (IR band) which cannot get out of the earth's atmosphere. That's how global warming got going.

Well, the tuned laser photons (in the video below, they mention using six of them in GPS satellites for atomic clock cooling) do not hit atoms/molecules going AWAY from them because their frequency enables them to "miss" them (no photon momentum absorption due to Doppler effect frequency difference  (

In the process of absorbing a photon, the atom receives a small push, a push in the direction away from the source of light, which is the key to laser cooling.

The end result is billions of molecules slowing down and getting real cold, real quick as a consequence of a teeny tiny amount of laser energy injected to do the cooling. (

I hope you realize that this means we will soon have air conditioners that use MUCH LESS ENERGY (look ma, no compressor!). It's painfully obvious that lasers, BECAUSE they shoot ZERO MASS photons (there ain't any other kind of photons  ;D), will require much less energy to cool down a gas than present refrigeration technology.

AND, they won't need any fancy refrigeration gas or fluid. WATER will do quite nicely for an ICE box refrigerator or air conditioner, thank you very much.  (

Like I said before, THIS IS BIG!  (

Do sea fish and sea mammals drink sea water and if they do how do they eliminate Sodium? ???
( Fresh water fish do not drink water, they absorbed it through their skin, like osmosis. Sea water fish do drink water, and excrete the salt through their gills.

The salmon, which lives in both environments, gets its water like a fresh water fish when in fresh water and like a sea water fish when in the sea.

How Fish Gills Work

These fantastic little organs allow the fish to absorb oxygen from the water and use it for energy. Functionally, gills are not that dissimilar to the lungs in humans and other mammals. The main difference is how they are able to absorb much smaller concentrations of available oxygen, while allowing the fish to maintain an appropriate level of Sodium Chloride (salt) in their bloodstream.

Gills work on the same principle as lungs. In the lungs, there are small sacs called alveoli that are approximately 70% capillaries. These capillaries carry deoxygenated blood from the body. As oxygen and carbon dioxide pass across the alveoli’s membrane, the capillaries take the newly oxygenated blood back to the body. Similarly, gills have small rows and columns of specialized cells grouped together called the epithelium. Deoxygenated blood in the fish is supplied directly from the heart to the epithelium via arteries, and even yet smaller arterioles. As seawater is forced across the epithelium membranes, dissolved oxygen in the seawater is taken up by tiny blood vessels and veins, while the carbon dioxide is exchanged.

Gills themselves have a car radiator-like appearance. Most fish have 4 gills on each side, consisting of a main bar-like structure that has numerous branches as that of a tree, and those branches consisting of even smaller branch-like structures. This arrangement of cells allows for a very large surface area when the gills are immersed in water.

Functionally, the mechanism for pumping water over the radiator-like gills seems to vary depending on the species of fish. In general, this is achieved by the fish lowering the floor of the mouth and widening the outer skin flap that protects the gills, called the operculum. This increase in volume lowers the pressure within the mouth causing the water to rush in. As the fish raises the floor of their mouth, an inward fold of skin forms a valve of sorts which doesn’t allow water to rush out. The pressure is then increased compared to the outside of the mouth and the water is forced through the operculum opening and across the gills.

Gills themselves need a very large surface area to provide the fish with the necessary oxygen demands. Air is approximately 21% oxygen or about 210,000 parts per million. Water, on the other hand, only has about 4-8 parts per million of dissolved oxygen that the gills can extract. Because of this, if the fish did not have a large gill surface area to absorb as much oxygen as it can for it’s size, it would quickly suffocate. Cold blooded animals also tend to have a lower metabolism than their warm blooded counterparts. This aids them in their ability to handle environments of low available oxygen. Should the same size fish be warm blooded, the metabolism of the little swimmer would be increased to the point that the available oxygen would not be sufficient and little Nemo would perish.

While the large gill surface area allows for sufficient exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen, it at the same time exposes the same large blood volume to the hypertonic (that is, saltier than thou) sea water, creating a situation in which fish must have a backup mechanism for expelling excess sodium that has been incidentally absorbed. Conversely, freshwater fish need to have an opposite mechanism allowing them to excrete excess water to keep their sodium levels appropriately high. Never mind about those anadromous gypsies who trounce back and forth, able to thrive in both fresh and salt water environments. We will just call them show offs and leave it at that.

To deal with this sodium problem, inside the gill resides nifty little cells called chloride cells. These cells allow for the extrusion of any unwanted sodium. Freshwater fish tend to have less of these cells than do their seafaring counterparts. This, combined with the ability to have extremely diluted urine, allows fresh water fish to keep their sodium level appropriately high.

Chloride Cells (cc) of Nile tilapia seen as dark dots with examples encircled.
Fig. 4. Chloride cells (cc) of Nile tilapia, seen as dark dots with examples encircled, are situated in the filamental epithelium at the base of the lamellae (gl). Control fish A. In the 6 h and 24 h post treatment groups, chloride cells had migrated towards the apices of the lamella (arrow) B. This phenomenon was observed in both the clipped and handled fish. cc: chloride cell, gf: gill filament, gl: gill lamellae.

◾Given that the size of the gills helps with the uptake of oxygen, as you might expect, the more active a fish is, the bigger the gills compared to their body size.

◾Because the marine environment is hyperosmotic, boney fish tend to lose water through osmosis. Because of this. they tend to compensate by taking in water through the gut, thereby exacerbating the problem of sodium uptake.

◾The distance between the blood and water in the epithelial cells of fish is approximately 1 micro meter, or about 1 millionth of a meter.

◾At approximately 32,000 species, fish exhibit greater species diversity then any other class of vertebrates.

◾It is estimated that there are approximately 15,000 unidentified fish species.  :o

◾Fossil evidence has suggested that fish have been on the earth for approximately 400 million years.

◾Fish that have the ability to live in both salt water and fresh water are called Anadromous fish.

Most boney fish maintain the sodium content of their body fluids at approximately 40% that of sea water.

◾Anadromous fish must have physiological processes to deal with the changing salt content in their environment. One mechanism used is that, while in fresh water, they tend to have the ability to excrete very dilute urine, thus removing more fresh water and keeping their sodium levels normal. While in salt water, they use a specialized group of salt excreting cells in the gills and mouth lining. They also have kidneys that can excrete very concentrated urine.

Sharks ( and Hagfish have a much greater salt content than bony fish and it is naturally in balance with ocean water, thus not having the bony fishes problem of salt regulation.

Now you know why they call the above a hagfish.  :D

Watch amazing footage of Cassini diving towards Saturn

Last updated on May 4th, 2017  at 5:25 pm by Tibi Puiu

Last week, NASA’s Cassini probe performed the first dive around Saturn’s rings as part of its Grand Finale — a series of hula hoop jumps through the gaps of Saturn’s rings before the spacecraft is scheduled to crash in the planet’s atmosphere. We learned quite a lot from this episode, such as that the gap between the gas giant’s rings is more or less empty. Apparently, not only did Cassini acoustically record what happened as charged particles whizzed past the spacecraft, it also filmed Saturn’s atmosphere as it traveled above it. Hit play for a glimpse of this one-of-a-kind spectacle.

What you’re seeing here compressed in less than a minute was actually filmed over an hour and then sped up. Cassini captured shots of the planet’s whirling atmosphere as it traveled southward from 45,000 miles above the surface at the start of the video to 4,200 miles by the end of the show. This is why the quality of the video seems to abruptly change since “the smallest resolvable features in the atmosphere changed from 5.4 miles (8.7 kilometers) per pixel to 0.5 miles (810 meters) per pixel,” NASA explained in the press release.

This amazing photo was shot by Cassini on April 12 at a distance of 1,400 million km from Earth. Image Credit: NASA/JPL

One of the highlights is the flyby above Saturn’s famous hexagon-shaped cloud patterns. These can be twice as wide as Earth’s diameter and are formed by jet streams.

“I was surprised to see so many sharp edges along the hexagon’s outer boundary and the eye-wall of the polar vortex,” said Kunio Sayanagi, an associate of the Cassini imaging team based at Hampton University in Virginia, in a statement. “Something must be keeping different latitudes from mixing to maintain those edges,” he added.

If you thought this video was impressive, the next passes should render even sharper and captivating interesting images after the Cassini team change the spacecraft’s “conservative” camera settings.

Cassini will make about 20 more passes around Saturn and its rings before finally making its final jump into the planet’s atmosphere sometime in September 2017.

“The spacecraft is now on a ballistic path, so that even if we were to forgo future small course adjustments using thrusters, we would still enter Saturn’s atmosphere on Sept. 15 no matter what,” said Earl Maize, Cassini project manager at JPL.

The main types of mountains — Earth’s ups and downs

Last updated on May 15th, 2017 at 5:19 pm by Mihai Andrei

Mountains have played a central role in human culture since times immemorial. Yet it’s only recently that we’ve started to understand how mountains form and develop; to this day, these magnificent landforms still hold many secrets. There are several ways to analyze and classify mountains depending on what field of science you come from, but here, we’ll have a look at the most common classification and then go into a bit more detail.

Aerial view of Mount Everest from the south. The Himalayas are fold mountains. Image credits: airline company Drukair in Bhutan.

The types of mountains

Generally, mountains are split into: fold mountains, block mountains, dome mountains, and volcanic mountains. Plateau mountains, uplifted passive margins, and hotspot mountains are also sometimes considered.

⦁   Fold mountains — the most common type, formed when two or more tectonic plates collide.

⦁   Block mountains (or fault-block) — formed through geological processes which push some rocks up and others down.

⦁  Dome mountains — formed as a result of hot magma pushing beneath the crust.

⦁  Volcanic mountains — also known by a simpler name: volcanoes.

⦁  Other types of mountains sometimes brought into classifications are plateau mountains, uplifted passive margins, and hotspot mountains.

Fold mountains

The Rocky Mountains are a great example of fold mountains. Image credits: National Park Service Digital Image Archives.

These are the not only the most common, but also the biggest types of mountains (on Earth, at least). Fold mountain chains can spread over thousands of kilometers — we’re talking about the Himalayas, the Alps, the Rockies, the Andes, all the big boys. They’re also relatively young mountains (which is another reason they’re so tall, as they haven’t been thoroughly eroded), but that’s “young” in geological terms — still a few good tens of millions of years.

In order to understand how fold mountains form and develop, we have to dip our fingers into some tectonics. The Earth’s litosphere is split into rigid plates which move independently to each other. There are seven major plates, and several smaller ones across the world. When two plates collide, all sorts of things can start happening. For instance, if one is denser than the other (oceanic plates are typically denser due to the rocks they are made of), a process a subduction will start — the heavier one will slowly glide beneath the other one. But if they have relatively similar densities, then they will start to crumple up and drive movement upwards. Basically, the tectonic plates are pushed, but since neither can slide beneath each other, they just build up geological folds. To get a better idea of how this looks like, try to push two pieces of papers towards each other. Some parts will go up, and those are the mountains.

Sometimes, the folding happens inside the continent and is associated with faulting. This is a representation of that process, in northern Montana, USA and Southern Alberta, Canada. Image credits: Greg Beaumont, National Park Service.

This process is called orogeny (giving birth to mountains) and it generally takes millions of years for it to complete. Many of today’s fold mountains are still developing as the tectonic process unfolds. The process doesn’t only happen on tectonic edges, sometimes the mountain-generating fold process can take place well inside a tectonic plate.

Block mountains (or fault-block)

Whereas the previous category was all about folds, this one is all about faults; geological faults, that is.

Depiction of the block-faulting process. Image credits: U.S. Geological Survey.

Let’s go back to the previous idea for a moment. Let’s say that under pressure, some parts of a tectonic plate is starting to fold. As the pressure grows and grows, at one point the rock can simply break. Faults are those breaks, they’re the planar fractures or discontinuities in volumes of rock. They can vary tremendously in size from a few centimeters to mountain-sized.

Basically, when big blocks of rock are broken through faulting, some of them can be pushed up or down, and thus block mountains can result. Higher blocks are called horsts and troughs are called grabens. Their size can also be impressive, though they’re generally not as big as the fold mountains because the process which generates them takes place on a smaller scale and involves less pressure. Still, the Sierra Nevada mountains, which are a good example of block mountains, feature a block 650 km long and 80 km wide. Another good example is the Rhine Valley and the Vosges mountain in Europe. Rift valleys can also generate block mountains, as is the case in the Eastern African Rift, for example.

It can be quite difficult to identify a block mountain without knowing its underlying geology but generally, they tend to have a steep side and a slowly sloping side.
Volcanic mountains

Annotated view includes Ushkovsky, Tolbachik, Bezymianny, Zimina, and Udina stratovolcanoes of Kamchatka, Russia. Image taken aboard the ISS in 2013.

Everyone knows something about volcanoes, though we rarely think about them as mountains (and truth be told, they aren’t always mountains).
Volcanic mountains are created when magma from deep under the surface starts to rise up. At one point, it erupts in the form of lava, and then cools down, solidifies, and starts to pile on, building a mountain. Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Rainier are typical examples of volcanic mountains — with Mount Rainier being one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. However, it’s not necessary for the volcano to be active.

The summit of Mauna Kea. Image credits: Pixabay.

Several types of volcanoes can generate mountains, with Stratovolcanoes typically being the biggest ones. Despite Mount Everest being the tallest mountain above sea level, Mauna Kea is actually much taller than Everest — at over 10,000 meters. However, much of it is submerged, with only 4205 meters rising above sea level.

Dome mountains

Dome mountains are also the result of magmatic activity, though they are not volcanic in nature.

Southeast face of Fairview Dome in Yosemite National Park. Image credits: Jennie.

Sometimes, lots of magma can accumulate beneath the ground and start to swell the surface up. Sometimes, it never reaches the surface but still forms a dome. As that magma cools down and solidifies, it is often tougher than other surrounding rocks can be exposed after millions of years of erosion. The mountain is this dome — a former accumulation of magma which cooled down and was exposed by erosion.

Round Mountain is a relatively recent dome mountain. It represents a volcanic feature of the Canadian Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province that formed in the past 1.6 million. Black Dome Mountain is another popular example, also in Canada.

Other types of mountains

As we mentioned above, there’s no strict classification of all mountains, so other types are sometimes mentioned.

Plateau mountains

Basically, plateau mountains aren’t formed by something going up — they’re formed by something going down. Imagine a plateau, for instance. Let’s say it has a river on it. Year after year, that river carves a part of the plateau, bit by bit. After some time, there might only be a bit of the original plateau left un-eroded, and that part basically becomes a mountain. This generally takes a very long time even by geological standards and can go up to billions of years. Some geologists group all these mountains along with dome mountains into a broader category called erosional mountains.

Uplifted passive margins

There’s no geological model to fully explain how uplifted passive margins formed, but we do see them in the world. The Scandinavian Mountains, Eastern Greenland, the Brazilian Highlands or Australia’s Great Dividing Range are such examples, owing their existence to some uplifting mechanism.

Hotspot mountains

The trail of underwater mountains created as the tectonic plate moved across the Hawaii hotspot over millions of years. Image credits: USGS.

Although once thought to be identical to volcanic mountains, new research has shed some light on this belief. Hotspots are volcanic regions thought to be fed by a part of the underlying mantle which is significantly hotter than its surroundings. However, even though that hot area is fixed, the plates move around it — causing it to leave a hotspot trail of mountains.

Great article! I know that it is very controversial in main stream academic geology circles, but what do you think of the theory of global expansion causing mountain formation as the surface of the sphere becomes less curved? There is indisputable geologic evidence that all the ocean basins are much younger than the earth's crust on continents. Tectonic plate theory does not have an answer to that but the expanding earth theory fits the planetary geology much better. I am not saying that plate tectonics are not involved in mountain formation; I am saying that an expanding globe combined with plate tectonics is a more comprehensive theory of our geology.

 Mihai > ⦁   agelbert ⦁   a day ago
I'm not particularly familiar with this theory, but the tectonic mechanism of orogeny is pretty well established.

agelbert > Andrei Mihai • 17 hours ago
Well, the maximum age of the ocean basins is about 190 million years. But the thing that is most convincing to me that something besides plate tectonics is at work is the distance of the oceanic rifts from the land masses of Australia and Antarctica. It makes no sense UNLESS they stretched apart without any subduction whatsoever.

Also, the closer you get to the oceanic volcanic ridges, the younger the crust is. Finally the crust of the earth is thinner in the ocean basins than on continents. All of that argues for global expansion.

I know you will think this unscientific, but I am familiar with stretch marks on human female breasts when they grow too quickly for the skin to adjust normally. The ocean basin topography looks uncannily like these types of stretch marks. But the stretching of landscape on land is a known geologic feature that also appears to be identical, though in much smaller scale to the oceanic "stretch mark" like topography.

Please watch the video and tell me what you think is inaccurate about global expansion theory.

Andrei Mihai > agelbert  • a day ago

I do think this is pretty unscientific, yes. I'll agree that plate tectonics is not a perfect, all-encompassing theory. It's an area of active research, and the sheer complexity of the subject will have us learning new things years and years from now... but.

The video starts from some truthful, and some false premises. For instance, the oldest oceanic crust isn't 140 million years old. In the west Pacific and north-west Atlantic, oceanic crust is 180-200 million years old. These are pretty big areas, not isolated patches, but it gets even better. In the Eastern parts of the Mediterranean, there are remnants of the former Tethys Ocean, which are 270 million years old (some studies put bits of it at 340 million years old). This is the most commonly referenced map, which I recommend having a look at.

There's a mountain of evidence supporting plate tectonics, so we know it's happening, it's very much real, though we're not exactly sure what's the exact mechanism of movement, and how all of it happens. This is always the case when you're studying phenomena on this scale, and working only with indirect evidence. As for the disappearance of plates, look up subduction. Oceanic plates are denser and "heavier" than continental plates, which is why they tend to subduce and get consumed in the lithosphere.

agelbert > Andrei Mihai •

Thank you for your polite and respectful response. It is rare to see an erudite person like yourself treat a person who is not credentialed this way. So, I am grateful for this conversation with you.

I respect your opinion, and that of the geologic mainstream scientific community. I agree with you that more research and experimentation is required to fully understand plate tectonics.

The only question I have, judging from your comment about the ocean basin age mentioned in the video, is why didn't you watch the full video? The different ocean basin age crusts issue was explained in detail, along with a discussion of the Mediterranean Sea basin.

I have studied subduction theory. I remain unconvinced that such a crustal "conveyer belt" actually exists simply because of the nearly equidistant volcanic rifts from the continental plates on either side in the Atlantic Ocean and between Australia and Antarctica.

Furthermore, subduction is a rather convenient excuse to claim that ocean basin crust is "reformed" with such high temperatures that its age simply "appears" to be much younger than the 4.5 billion year, much older dated continental land areas. The 4.5 billon year dating versus the much younger age for ocean basins as you stated, citing a maximum of 340 million years for one basin age versus 190 million years for others (with various documented ages in between), is not explained by subduction theory.

I am of the belief that the dating methods used by geologists are accurate, at least within an error margin of 100 million years.

So, the gigantic age gap problem between continents and ocean basins remains to be answered.

agelbert > Andrei Mihai •

If the Mckenzie model works for continental crust, why isn't it also clear that the same mechanism is at work in oceanic basin crust (i.e. stretching from expansion, not contraction)?  ???

Well, it is clear to the geologists. But that's where the controversy begins as to the CAUSE of that indisputable evidence of stretching.

In the graphic below, accepted by mainstream geologists, the stretching of the ocean basins is not in question. They admit that the basins are stretching; they simply require the subduction theory to explain that crustal stretching in order to avoid dealing with the ocean basin stretching based evidence of global expansion.

And as to crustal compression, as alleged to be the cause of continents moving towards one another, thereby causing mountain ranges to be formed, a less curved sphere of the earths surface, the result of an expanding globe, is a better explanation of how absolutely every mountain range on earth was formed. Just look, with unbiased eyes, at the location of mountain ranges and you will see what I mean.

Mountain range creation can be modeled on a tiny scale by arcing a 4' by 8' piece of plywood, fixing it in position, and applying plaster of Paris at varying thicknesses over it. After the plaster is hard in a day or so, gradually reduce the curvature and observe the "crustal compression", NOT from "continental plate collisions", but from a less curved surface.

This effect can also be observed in an inflated balloon covered with mud that is allowed to dry. When the balloon is further inflated the compression of the mud to form miniature "mountain ranges" and "ocean basins, where the added balloon area appears, is obvious to anyone but a mainstream geologist. I think they are just stubborn and set in their ways. But someday the obvious reality of an expanding globe will be accepted over the convenient theory of subduction invented to avoid accepting the reality of an expanding globe.

Fibonacci Sequence: The Spiral of Life

Fib(n, T): Tn= T(n-1) + T(n-2)
for -∞ > n > ∞

The fingerprint, ear and cloud pics are CHOSEN to fit well.
Can a snail do addition?
Or a plant?
Or is it because Fib(n) is a rough approximation of k.en - a generalised exponential?

Of course the graphics are chosen because they are "best fit", but the spiral is quite ubiquitous through nature.  And yea, that is partly because it reflects exponential growth.  But that is the point here.  Once it begins, life grows this way.  Not always the perfect spiral, but as long as there is energy around it continues to grow.  There will be energy around in surplus in the Universe for quite some time to come.  I expect therefore numerous new spirals will also come into existence.

Just tell Palloy that GOD did it ( That always gets a  very predictable reaction from atheists like him.   (

How the World Map Looks Wildly Different Than You Think

Published on Aug 12, 2016

All of us have seen a world map at some point in our lives before, but it is very difficult to imagine how certain countries and parts of the world compare to each other in size that are far apart. In this video, I explore why the world looks very different than how it is portrayed in the Mercator Projection map. I then go on to explore how certain countries are unexpectedly larger or smaller than what they appear to be, and how some places looks wildly different than our perceptions.

PS; Don't totally hate on the Mercator Projection, it's actually a really useful map for navigation and on keeping the correct shape of countries while sacrificing the size that we can all laugh about!

I hear and I obey, great one. 🐸

I was waiting to see how long it would take you to go ballistic with this.  ;D  I figured if I didn't issue the directive, pretty soon you would have a whole title filled with an Emoji sentence.  (

With the availability of the new ASCII Emojis, I am issuing a new style directive on the Diner.

In the titles on the Subject Line of your post, stick to ONE Emoji, either at the beginning or the end of the title.  Let's not overkill here.

I don't now how to find all these new emojiiii's aND ALSO DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLACE THEM IN THE TITLE?

ASCII Emojis are just like text you keyboard.  They each have a code behind them and each platform has its own version of the character.  So what you see on Apple looks a little different than what you see on Windows or Google or Android.

The easiest way to add them to your text is to go to and copy/paste into your text.

Procedure is as follows:

1- Open up a window with the ( website
2- Click on the category of emoji you are looking for or type the keyword in the SEARCH box at the top of the page.  If there is an emoji for it, the search will find it.
3- Click on the emoji you want to use, and a new screen for that emoji pops up.
4- Click the "copy" button for that emoji
5- Go back to the window where you were keyboarding and paste (ctrl+V) wherever you want (including in the Subject (Title) Field)

No html or bbcode tags are necessary.  It's just like a text character.

Knarf, so far no ASCII Emoji for the NTHE Symbol.  You do have the Skull & Crossbones though!

RE's advice is good and proper. But RE didn't mention what I immediately became confused by and I'm sure you were confused by as well. Teaching is not RE's strong forte, to put it mildly.  ;)

Here's the deal:

1. Those dad gum emojies do NOT show up in the preview, but they DO show up when you post in the title or in your post.

2. Just put a bunch of them in a wordpad document and copy and paste the one you want as the occasion requires it. (i.e. go to the ( web site and copy and paste into a blank wordpad document you label as Emojies text fun and games).

3. Save your emojies wordpad document and open it when you are posting.

4. I have my emojies document open now and I will now copy and paste an appropriate representation of a lousy teacher: 🦀 This can be placed in the title the same way.

5. In the body of your post you can make it bigger by just making it bold and increasing the font size too🦀

6. Have fun but remember RE doesn't want us to have too much fun or he will rain thunder upon we mortals.   (

7. One more thing: The font that Microsoft interprets the emojies as having is Segoe UI Symbol. This means a few of the emojies don't show properly in your document. I haven't figured my way around that. I hope da godfader is in a good mood and will kindly show is how to do dat widout to much hair pulling and so on. 🐉

Sampling of Segoe UI Symbol Emojies that don't show up right on a wordpad document (i.e., they show as vertical rectangles  :():

🦓🦒🦕 🦖 🦔, etc.

As you can see, they do show up fine here, so if you can manage to tack these graphics with cut and paste from a paint graphic print screen onto the wordpad document next to their corresponding vertical rectangle , you can then ID them before you use them.  8)

What Happened to U.S. Military Vehicles and Equipment after World War II?   (

Espiritu Santo, the largest island of the Vanuatu archipelago in the South Pacific, was transformed by the United States into a military sup er 1941. The balmy island became a convenient hub for striking back at Japan during World War II. When the fighting stopped, the U.S. military left behind roads, buildings, and runways, but they couldn't get the French and British colonial authorities to agree to buy the supplies that the Americans wouldn't be able to transport back home. So the Americans dumped it all into the ocean -- everything from vehicles and weapons to clothes and crates of Coca-Cola. 👀

An underwater arsenal:

֍ The Europeans on the island passed on the goods, even though they were offered at the low price of 6 cents on the dollar, because they figured that the Americans would end up simply leaving everything behind on their way out.

֍ Today, Million Dollar Point (so named for the value of the equipment submerged there), has become an odd underwater museum where snorkelers and scuba divers can spot military tanks, guns, bulldozers, forklifts, and Jeeps.

֍ Espiritu Santo was the inspiration for the setting of the well-known 1949 musical South Pacific, which features an American nurse who falls in love with a French plantation owner during the war.

Agelbert NOTE: Here's a sample of the (coral encrusted and thoroughly rusted items  :P) that can be viewed at Million Dollar Point. Tires seem to hold up quite well. ;D Perhaps, if there is air in those tires still, a team of scientists will take a sample of 1945 air to use as a control for comparing with modern, thoroughly polluted, air.

However, as long as the USA continues to be a Fossil Fuel 🐉🦕🦖 Worshipping Petro State 🦀, the funding would have to come from some other country.

Inside Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51L During The Accident (Higher Quality)

Earth Station Alpha

Published on Jan 5, 2017

On January 28, 1986 despite the warnings of engineers not to launch in freezing temperatures, NASA management chose to launch Space Shuttle Challenger.  The result was the loss of 7 astronauts in a horrific explosion 73 seconds later when flames from a solid rocket booster leak from a **** o-ring and burned through the main fuel tank.  The solid rocket boosters remained intact after the explosion and continued on out of control before mission control sent a self destruct signal to them so they could not cause destruction on the ground.

This video gives a detailed and technical explanation of the entire Challenger accident including pre-launch assembly, launch, post-launch, and accident investigation. It is highly recommended that the entire video be viewed to get a full understanding of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident.

Is the Speed of Sound Constant? (

The speed of light is a constant, always traveling at the rate of 186,000 miles (300,000 km) per second. The speed of sound, on the other hand, is much more fickle. For example, sound waves move at 761.2 miles per hour (1,225 km/h) at sea level when the air temperature is 59 degrees F (15 degrees C).

However, heat up the air and they move faster; cool the air, and they slow down.

That's why breaking the sound barrier high in the sky is relatively easy: Temperatures are colder, so a lower speed will do the job.

Interestingly, sound moves very quickly under water, where the molecules are much denser than they are in the air. Their density means that they bump into one another more quickly, which is how sound travels. Sound travels through water at approximately 4,856 feet per second (1,480 meters/sec) -- more than four times faster than its speed through the 💨 air. But because the molecules are denser in water, sound needs more energy (ie. loudness) -- to get moving. That's why faint sounds can't be heard under water like they can above it.

Sounds interesting: (

► Sound doesn't exist in space because there aren't any molecules for it to travel through.
► The greatest sound ever recorded 💥 was the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano ( in 1883. The explosion could be heard 3,000 miles (4,828 km) away.

► A whip's snap is the sound of the tip breaking the sound barrier. (

How Many Galaxies Are in the Universe?

A galaxy contains billions of stars, held together by gravity. Within each galaxy, there are planetary systems, like the Earth and its neighbor planets within the Milky Way. But ours is just one galaxy in an astronomical sea of stars reaching farther than the most powerful telescopes can see. We will probably never know just how many galaxies exist, but 3-D modeling by the Hubble Space Telescope over 20 years has come up with a new estimate, published in The Astronomical Journal. In 2016, astronomers studied computer-enhanced deep space images and determined that there are probably around two trillion galaxies in the universe (, far more than the previous estimate of between 100 and 200 billion galaxies.

Galaxies far, far away:

֍ The landmark Hubble Deep Field imaging of the mid-1990s gave scientists their first analysis of galaxies, and Hubble's Ultra Deep Field in 2004 added a plethora of faint galaxies, leading to an estimate of 200 billion galaxies.

֍ The newest analysis of deep-space images from Hubble converted the images into 3-D. Using mathematical models, scientists were able to infer the existence of galaxies that current telescopes cannot see.

֍ “It boggles the mind that over 90 percent of the galaxies in the universe have yet to be studied,” the University of Nottingham astronomers wrote. “Who knows what interesting properties we will find ... with the next generation of telescopes?”

The now dubbed “Phobos monolith” is a large object on the surface of Mars's moon “Phobos”. The giant structure stands 90 meters tall. Only 3 meters less than that of the Statue of Liberty Monument in New York.

First discovered by “Efrain Palermo” who noticed the distinct shadow of the anomaly while analysing images taken from the “Mars Global Surveyor orbiter” lanched in November 1996. This peculiar and solitary large rock was also confirmed by “Lan Fleming”, an imaging sub-contractor at NASA Johnson Space Center. Also Noting the possibility that the monolith is artificial in nature.

The Trump administration in the US continues to roll back environmental protections, this time on energy-efficient light bulbs. Is this going to help destroy civilization for profits?

With special guest Tim A. Wise

Is big agriculture the biggest obstacle to solving climate change? Chemical intensive agriculture is kicking our planet and actually contributing to world hunger.

The deforestation in Brazil is contributing to CO2.

Why is the US federal government promoting the industrializing of land and pushing the same in other countries? Small scale farmers around the world are being pushed to increase in size and use chemicals produced in the US. Seed companies want farmers to not save seeds for the next year but buy fresh seed every year. There is nothing climate-smart or sustainable about that.

Timothy A. Wise joined Thom to explain the policies and what is going wrong.

The average global temperature in July was 1.71 degrees F above the 20th-century average, making it the hottest July in the 140-year record. The previous hottest month on record was July 2016. Nine of the 10 hottest Julys have occurred since 2005 -- with the last five years ranking as the five hottest. Not surprising - There is also record-low sea ice. Average Arctic sea ice set a record low for July, running 19.8% below average -- surpassing the previous historic low of July 2012.

Below is a further discussion by Henry Reich that I think helps summarize why axes 1 and 3 are generally stable while axis 2 is not:

In general, you might imagine that because the object can rotate in a bunch of different directions, the components of energy and momentum could be free to change while keeping the total momentum constant.

However, in the case of axis 1, the kinetic energy is the highest possible for a given angular momentum, and in the case of axis 3, the kinetic energy is the lowest possible for a given angular momentum (which can be easily shown from conservation of energy and momentum equations, and is also fairly intuitive from the fact that kinetic energy is proportional to velocity squared, while momentum is proportional to velocity - so in the case of axis 1, the smaller masses will have to be spinning faster for a given momentum, and will thus have more energy, and vice versa for axis 3 where all the masses are spinning: the energy will be lowest). In fact, this is a strict inequality - if the energy is highest possible, there are no other possible combinations of momenta other than L2=L3=0, and vice versa for if the energy is the lowest possible.

Because of this, in the case of axis 1 the energy is so high that there simply aren't any other possible combinations of angular momentum components L1, L2 and L3 - the object would have to lose energy in order to spin differently. And in the case of axis 3, the energy is so low that there likewise is no way for the object to be rotating other than purely around axis 3 - it would have to gain energy. However, there's no such constraint for axis 2, since the energy is somewhere in between the min and max possible. This, together with the centrifugal effects, means that the components of momentum DO change.

Title: If You Think Jupiter Orbits the Sun, You're Mistaken

If You Think Jupiter Orbits the Sun, You're Mistaken  (

If we picture the solar system, we often picture our dominant star at the center of things, static and immobile as planets orbit circles around it. That picture makes things simple to understand, but technically it's inaccurate. Take our largest planet Jupiter, for instance. It doesn't orbit the sun's center — it orbits a spot in empty space between it and the sun called the barycenter. This is because the sun doesn't just exert gravity on Jupiter — Jupiter's so big that its own pull affects how the sun moves, too.

The sun is about 1,000 times more massive than Jupiter, and these two bodies affect one another proportionally according to distance and mass, so the amount Jupiter's gravity pulls on the sun is one-thousandth the amount the sun's gravity pulls on Jupiter. And Jupiter's orbit takes 11.8 Earth years to complete, and the sun travels around the barycenter takes the same amount of time.

The Sol-Jupiter barycenter sits 1.07 times the radius of the sun from the sun's center, or 7 percent the radius of the sun from the surface. The sun also orbits this spot; if you were to look at the planetary plane from above, you'd notice a slight wobble as the sun moves around the Milky Way, as this hypnotic NASA animation helps explain. What makes Jupiter's moon Europa so alluring is the possibility that it may possess all the ingredients necessary for life. Scientists have evidence that one of these ingredients, liquid water, is present under the icy surface and may sometimes erupt into space in huge geysers. However, no one has been able to confirm the presence of water in these plumes by direct measurement of the water molecule itself. Now, an international research team led out of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland has detected the water vapor for the first time above Europa's surface. The team measured the vapor by peering at Europa through one of the world's biggest telescopes in Hawaii. Confirming that water vapor is present above Europa helps scientists better understand the inner workings of the moon.
