The Onion "Forbes list" was pitch perfect:

Quote
“The Forbes editorial board considered hundreds of candidates, and it was frankly very difficult to narrow down the list to just 100 names,” Lane continued. “But we’re confident that as readers page through the bios and look at the ****-eating grins on these fuckers, they’ll want to knee every goddamn one of them right in the gut.”

The Black Sea is home to more than 1 billion tons (907 billion kg) of jellyfish.

The Black Sea, an inland sea located between Asia and Europe, is often referred to as the jellyfish capital of the world because there are an estimated 1 billion tons (907 billion kg) of jellyfish living in its waters. At one point in the 1990s, the Black Sea contained the equivalent of more than 10 times the weight of all of the fish caught in the world each year. Jellyfish are not native to the Black Sea and are thought to have been inadvertently introduced there by a ship in 1982. After the introduction of the jellyfish into the Black Sea, the supply of fish that are caught for food — such as mackerel, anchovies and sturgeon — declined rapidly in the surrounding areas and affected the economies of
countries such as Romania and Georgia.

More about jellyfish:

•Jellyfish are able to double in size each day by eating 10 times their body weight in food. (Agelbert NOTE: That's as fast as DUCKWEED! Jellyfish are one of the main sources of food for sea turtles so, unless homo sap kills them off, sea turtles will NOT EVAH run out of food.)

•The Chinese have been eating jellyfish for at least 1,700 years, according to ancient texts.

Agelbert Note: And the CHINESE won't EVAH run out of food either! (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.clipartbest.com%2Fcliparts%2F9T4%2Fex7%2F9T4ex7Kbc.png&hash=ac58ea789616048548a077be17e99697ecc006c4)

•The jellyfish is thought to have appeared three times as many years ago as the first dinosaurs.

Russia Tests Nuclear Missile

Russia successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting targets up to 5,000 miles away. This test was one of many conducted on the Bulava missile, and follows the trend of increased military activity since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine. The missile is capable of carrying 6-10 nuclear warheads of up to 100 times the explosive yield of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, Japan.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-200714183543.bmp&hash=0dd31f89969b231b56a05560331875860bb55e56)

The 39-foot, 40-ton missile was successfully launched from a submarine in the White Sea to a target in Russia’s far east. Admiral Chirkov, Naval Commander-in-Chief, has stated that two more launches will be carried out in October and November of this year.

U.S. Tests Nuclear Missile

On September 23, the U.S. Air Force conducted a test launch of a Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. The missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California to Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. It came two days after the International Day of Peace (Sept. 21) and three days before the official UN Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (Sept. 26). Clearly this timing was meant to send a message, and it is not a message of peace.

Though the Air Force Global Strike Command contends that the ICBM test launch program is to validate and verify the effectiveness, readiness and accuracy of the weapon system, this test is yet another example of the continuation of decades of psychological and physical terror the U.S. has imposed upon the people of the Marshall Islands.

David Krieger, President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a consultant to the Marshall Islands on the Nuclear Zero Lawsuits, commented, “The officials at Vandenberg say the purpose of the test is to ‘validate and verify the effectiveness, readiness and accuracy of the weapons system.’ This means the effectiveness, readiness and accuracy of a weapons system capable of destroying civilization. The Air Force is only doing its job: practicing for the destruction of the human species.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-200714183543.bmp&hash=0dd31f89969b231b56a05560331875860bb55e56) Instead of launching missiles we should be leading negotiations to rid the world of weapons of mass annihilation.”

What is the Ratio of Bugs to Mammals? (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.desismileys.com%2Fsmileys%2Fdesismileys_6656.gif&hash=2038f9b45636a93e5c0f4ee508ce29778fe9e9b4) (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.desismileys.com%2Fsmileys%2Fdesismileys_1730.gif&hash=cdaf50326d98ff7b051a9c49e83d51c7bb687407) ???  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.desismileys.com%2Fsmileys%2Fdesismileys_1402.gif&hash=704ddbc7a892750ad55e7a7bea92270b1df3ecba)

There are an estimated 900,000 different types of species of bugs that have been discovered and classified, and the ratio of bugs to mammals on Earth is thought to be approximately 312 to 1.                           (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-280614160021.gif&hash=c4232ef777279385681440205c65fed5025a6886)

Researchers believe that bugs outnumber humans and other mammals because they can survive on a large variety of matter, such as decomposing matter, plants, other insects, and don’t have to be as competitive with other bugs for food. (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-200714194256.bmp&hash=1c2795e25df0dc7d9be4879b7bba6f1632f715e1)  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdl6.glitter-graphics.net%2Fpub%2F2752%2F2752256x4e962185l.gif&hash=b172b54c5cf7f75b0c1e937dee34cbf4c99097bc)

Insects are also able to live in a larger range of climates and environments than mammals, and their smaller size makes it easier for a high number of them to share a common space—particularly important since bugs have a high rate of reproduction.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-280614155943.gif&hash=b17e40102e2e6be63d51c9aa473fc1e44d92c2ae)

•Termite queens in Eastern Africa have been found lay over 40,000 eggs every day at a rate of approximately one every two seconds.  :o (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Femoticons%2Ftuzki-bunnys%2Ftuzki-bunny-emoticon-020.gif&hash=2c15038feed2fef3db86754b39ada55b3c81329a)  ;D

While humans are thought to date back 130,000 years, scientists believe that bugs have been around on Earth for 350 million years. •Insects are thought to outnumber plants at a ratio of 17 to 1. Due to thermodynamic energy losses in the biochemistry of life forms, each trophic level set of life forms MUST be have at least ten times the biomass of the one that feeds on it.

Perhaps they are talking about non-microscopic plants versus insects OR the total number of species identified by Homo SAPS.  ::)  At any rate, the biomass of plant autotrophs (phototrophic life forms eat SUNLIGHT! Nevertheless, OUR biomass compared with that of BUGS is rather INSIGNIFICANT. I hasten to add (before the fossil fueler jumps in there to claim fossil fuels are "insignificant" as well! LOL!) that OUR polluting machines and industrial stupidity are another matter, of course.

Howevah, sniff, my sources in the bug kingdom (I have spies among the ants and termites bribed with sugar  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-200714191329.bmp&hash=4764bfbe6bb0e11ca61102efa97a932a824f47e0) ;D) inform me that bugs are unconcerned about global warming or other Fossil Fueler crap that the Homo SAPs with a terminal case of the dumbass come up with. BUT, they are rather bothered about the indirect lack of credit and defamation of character hurled at them by a certain mendacious  Homo SAP scoundrel(https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Fswear1.gif&hash=87347674f9297191f3f8a447208170617da4caf6) that calls Homo SAPS "worm food"   (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-200714183312.bmp&hash=02dafef2fe739676600fdc9bd56271f0f5ab3723) >:(.

Apex (game theory Wall Street Social Darwinian "winners") Predator Crook COMPETITION gets fierce! :o  ;)

A sophisticated global cyberattack struck more than 100 banks in 30 countries stealing hundreds of millions of dollars (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Fpirates5B15D_th.gif&hash=32438e1ed2c4d1823d4ed2a193286525c840a605), The New York Times reported on Saturday (Feb 15).

WASHINGTON: A sophisticated global cyberattack struck more than 100 banks in 30 countries stealing hundreds of millions of dollars, The New York Times reported on Saturday (Feb 15).

Citing a soon to be released report from computer security company Kaspersky Lab, the newspaper said the attack involved malicious software that gave hackers long-term access to banking systems.

A group of Russians, Chinese and Europeans was able to siphon off around US$300 million in one of the world's largest bank robberies, the report said. The money was transferred to bank accounts around the world in small-value amounts to avoid detection.

Hackers largely focused on banks in Russia, but millions of dollars were also taken from banks in Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United States as well, the Times said.

Hackers had such advanced access to the banks' systems that they could force ATM machines to dispense cash at specific times and locations where hackers could pick it up.

Must-See: John Oliver and Martin Sheen Make Hilarious Doomsday Video   ;D
Cole Mellino

Last night on Last Week Tonight, John Oliver finds quite a gem. Apparently, in the early days of CNN, Ted Turner produced a doomsday video that CNN anchors recently reported is to be played in the event that the world is coming to an end. And just what exactly has CNN decided should air in the final moments of humanity’s time on Earth? A band very unenthusiastically playing a slow dirge.

Well, John Oliver has decided that is just an awful way for humanity to go out. So he’s enlisted Martin Sheen to make a much better version of a doomsday video, which encapsulates all of humanity’s successes and failures (and there are some epic failures). Sheen lists some of our major achievements, such as our total domination of every other species on the planet, becoming the first species to walk on two legs and then figuring out a way not to (thanks, segways!) and inventing a cereal that was nothing but cookies. Sheen reminds us not to be sad over what we’re losing, but instead think fondly over what we had.

Wait until you see what Sheen gives us as the final image humanity will ever see:

Star Date 344,757.093821 (late naked ape tool makers date 2066): Gardener Commander Zarkploof Report 747:

The last of the naked ape tool makers ceased biochemical activity in the most recent revolution of the blue planet around it's sun. It fell in a nuclear waste pool while being chased at night by a pack of large canines. The canines left at dawn. The ape swam, then crawled, out but lapsed into unconsciousness from treading water for so long. It was then bitten by several large rodents and bled to death while trying to fend them off. The rodents, the canines and a nearby ant colony disposed of the remains. All of those creatures subsequently died of radionuclide poisoning. The radionuclide pollution is extensive. We have sent probes to aid existing species in maintaining some vitality. We are doing this in order to provide the biochemical substrate for reseeding efforts so we won't have to start from microscopic autotrophs in rebuilding the biological energy absorption pyramid.

It is estimated that 245,000 local years will be required for the nuclear contaminants (Mostly the one the naked apes called Plutonium but there are several others) to cease degrading the biosphere with harmful mutations.

Our DNA bank has 157% of the species populating the planetary biosphere prior to the naked ape polluting millennium that destroyed the naked apes. NOTE: We will file a detailed report on the extinct species such as the giant reptiles and mammals in regard to the reseeding timeline.

For the next 100,000 years we will seed various fungi to absorb radionuclides for the purpose of collecting them and depositing them in the local sun. Perhaps, because of this activity, the time for active reseeding can take place somewhat earlier than 245,000 years. But we must bear in mind what happened on the Zeta 382, which required an increase in wait time, instead of a decrease. As was the case at Zeta 382, there are chemicals the naked killer apes produced in their ignorance that, though not radioactive, are deleterious to life and even more difficult to eliminate than the radioactive elements. The glyphosate poison is one of many that are ubiquitous in this thoroughly degraded biosphere.  So caution is advised.

As to the naked killer ape tool makers, we recommend the DNA of this species be modified to prevent self awareness. It seems that self awareness, though it does help them develop primitive cause and effect horizon logic, does not aid them in avoiding the manufacture of tools to wantonly exploit the biosphere they require for life. These beings always seem to fail through the "fool with a tool" axiom of degenerate self aware species development postulated by the philosopher Glado the Putzenko in his "Beings that Don't Understand Being" treatise. They cannot seem to grasp the idea that defecating where one obtains nourishment is suicidal when the product of defecation is an industrial pollutant.

This planet is a very depressing and sad place to visit at the moment. Speaking for myself and all of the crew, I request home leave equivalent to 20 local planet years on our home planets.

One of the factors creating stress in our crew is the fact that the naked killer ape tool makers looked so much like us.

Respecfully,

According to a poll done in 20 countries in 2012, roughly 15% of people believe the world will end during their lifetimes. The poll included 16,262 people from various countries such as China, Russia, Japan, the United States, Spain, Australia, Great Britain, Indonesia and Germany.

One in seven people taking part in the poll expressed a belief that the end of the world is near. The results did vary from country to country however. For example, 22% of poll participants from the United States said that the world will end during their lifetimes, whereas only 6% of poll participants from France felt the same way. The poll also showed higher rates of concern about the world ending among participants under the age of 35.

More about end of the world predictions:

•About 10% of people thought the world would end on December 21, 2012, the end date of the Mayan calendar.

•According to a poll published in Newsweek on November 1, 1999, 45% of Christians believe that the world will end at Armageddon, in a battle between Jesus and the antichrist.

•There have been possibly 100 or more wrong predictions about the date for the end of the world since the 1st century A.D.

Modern Rattitudes

Watch New York’s sewer rats discuss climate change

By Amelia Urry  on 4 Jun 2015

You know how we talk about climate change as an existential threat to human civilization? There are a handful of thought-experimenters who suggest that, when the Antropocene does in all the “Anthro,” other species will inevitably move up into the ecological niches we vacate. The best candidate for the job? Rats.

Welcome to the hypothetical Ratocene.   ;D The Adaptors have the story about what a future rat-world might look like in their podcast this week — but they also got the on-the-ground scoop from rats on the ground. They’re surprisingly talkative: Watch the video above to find out the hopes and fears of some of New York City’s finest rodent residents. (Hint: They’re about as conflicted as we are.)

And if you haven’t heard The Adaptors yet — check yourself. The whip-smart tag-team of Flora Lichtman and Katherine Wells are taking on the very wacky world of climate adaptation in brand new ways, with a podcast that explores everything from human-made tornadoes and earth-bound stars to whether we should consider genetically modifying humans to be more climate-friendly (cat eyes, anyone?). Not to mention they’ve got the low-down on yak science, and a series of climate confessions I think we can all secretly identify with.

Confession time: We have a little bit of a crush (ok, we have quite a few) and we’re looking forward to seeing what they get up to next. If you agree, may we suggest you subscribe to the podcast?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddVoyJJIhIk&feature=player_embedded

Agelbert NOTE: Egocentric people will not enjoy the last part of the rattitude discussion. Here’s the only explainer on California drought you need

By Abrahm Lustgarten, Lauren Kirchner, and Amanda Zamora  on 27 Jun 2015

SNIPPET:

Why do I keep hearing about the California drought, if it’s the Colorado River that we’re “killing”?  ???

Pretty much every state west of the Rockies has been facing a water shortage of one kind or another in recent years.  California’s is a severe, but relatively short-term, drought. But the Colorado River basin — which provides critical water supplies for seven states including California — is the victim of a slower-burning catastrophe entering its 16th year. Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California all share water from the Colorado River, a hugely important water resource that sustains 40 million people in those states, supports 15 percent of the nation’s food supply, and fills two of largest water reserves in the country.

VW worker killed by robot in Germany

David Jolley
Automotive News Europe
 July 2, 2015 11:39 CET

FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen Group said a contractor was crushed to death by a robot at its German components factory in Kassel, north of Frankfurt.

The 21-year-old worker was part of a two-man team setting up the robot on Monday when it grabbed him and crushed him against a metal plate, a company spokesman told Automotive News Europe. The team was assembling the robot for a new electric motor production line. The man was resuscitated at the scene but died later at a hospital in Kassel, the spokesman said.

Some media reported that initial investigations indicated that human error was to blame, but the spokesman declined to comment on this, saying only that an investigation had begun into the accident.

The robot normally operates within a confined area at the plant, picking up parts and moving them around. It can carry out various tasks in the assembly process, the spokesman said.

The contractor had been standing within the production area with the robot when the accident happened, while his colleague was standing in the outer area, local newspaper Hessische Niedersaechsische Allgemeine reported.

German prosecutors are now considering whether to bring charges following the accident, German news agency DPA said.

According to VW’s website, the Kassel site is the automaker’s main transmission plant and supplies the VW group with about 4 million manual and automatic transmissions a year, in addition to producing body, platform and exhaust parts. It also reconditions old engines and transmissions.

"Together, we must save the planet (and DRILL, BABY, DRILL.)" - President Obama cartoon animation.
Quote
Obama:

Hello, everybody.  Greetings from the beauty and majesty, that is Alaska . . .

. . . where under the direction of noted survivalist Bear Grylls, I will be wrestling with my environmental self.

A time of retreating sea ice, permafrost melting, climate change— is a time to open up the Arctic to oil drilling!

More powerful storms and more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere mean— we must turn over sensitive habitat to Royal Dutch Shell.

We must come together to honor our obligation to the planet— and to oil leases signed under George W. Bush.

For we are the ones we’ve been waiting for— and by “we” I mean, a foreign oil company who will get the oil out of our ground!

We need not sacrifice what makes America great for short term gain— but, a seventy-five percent chance of an oil spill . . . is a chance I can live with.

So remember, when you see me on a melting glacier, an eroding beach, by a native— you can also see me approving Arctic drilling, okaying pipelines, and giving the nod to fracking.

For together, we must save the planet . . . and drill, baby drill.

This reinforces my opinion that the clathrates are being melted by heat from below, not atmospheric heat.  Atmospheric temperature hasn't changed THAT much to get clathrates buried under permafrost to start melting.

RE

There is something else you should consider. That is, the ability of the oceans to serve as a carbon sink (the one that masked the CO2 hit and has a time lag of about 40 years) is reduced as the oceans warm (colder salt water can absorb more CO2). Therefore, increased ocean temperatures goose still another positive feedback mechanism that will pump CO2 out of the ocean and into the atmosphere in addition to the unabated increase in the amount CO2 being pumped into it from burning fossil fuels.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Fmog.gif&hash=08e6f04144781466148f6693be6dc3451a322669)

RE said,

The key here is whether geotectonic or anthropogenic, this process is underway, and we need to find a way to survive on a planet with 22C Average global temperature, which is where the system plateaus when all the carbon is released into the atmosphere.

Good luck trying to do that. Already I have read from a credentialed scientist that a global society cannot exist in a plus 4 degree C World (19C average).

A plus 10 degree C world (25 C average) is Permian Extinction level stuff. And the claim we are headed there BEFORE the positive feedback loops are burned out is not hyperbole.

I don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell of handling a 22 degree C average temperature (about 6 degrees C higher than present). Yes, for a while you can survive at the poles with a 60 METER sea level rise, but biosphere math requires diversity (that won't be there) plus the ability of a large enough gene pool (mating pairs) of surviving species to remain within their sine qua non  homeostatic band. We don't know how to do that.

Unless you are planning some giant mirror in space technofix (which might not work for other reasons), any plan to survive above a plus 3 degree C rise is not possible with our present level of technology.

Of course the extremophiles can handle just about anything. Tardigrades might inherit the earth. That isn't much help to us.

WWF says we risk losing species critical to human food security unless action is taken to halt overfishing and other threats to marine life.

Tuna and mackerel populations have suffered a “catastrophic” decline of nearly three quarters in the last 40 years, according to new research.   (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-300714025456.bmp&hash=f4e4a260bd60d3f34ca86fed93c47d5fb4117cfd)

WWF and the Zoological Society of London found that numbers of the scombridae family of fish, which also includes bonito, fell by 74% between 1970 and 2012, outstripping a decline of 49% for 1,234 ocean species over the same period.   :(

The conservation charity warned that we face losing species critical to human food security, unless drastic action is taken to halt overfishing and other threats to marine life.

Louise Heaps, chief advisor on marine policy at WWF UK, said:
Quote
"This is catastrophic. We are destroying vital food sources, and the ecology of our oceans.” (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.desismileys.com%2Fsmileys%2Fdesismileys_1593.gif&hash=628238f2fc26695937f6e97b91b050976065743b)

Attention in recent years has focused on species such as bluefin tuna, now on the verge of extinction in the Pacific, but other close relatives commonly found on restaurant menus or in tins, such as yellowtail tuna and albacore, are now also becoming increasingly scarce. Only skipjack, also often tinned, is showing “a surprising degree of resilience”, according to Heaps, one of the authors of the Living Blue Planet report, published on Wednesday.

(https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Foceanservice.noaa.gov%2Ffacts%2Fseacuke.jpg&hash=686d762247b9e0c70f9cfb72065baa752fe0459d)

Other species suffering major declines include sea cucumbers, a luxury food in Asia, which have fallen 98% in number in the Galapagos and 94% in in the Egyptian Red Sea. Populations of endangered leatherback turtles, which can be seen in UK waters, have plummeted.

Overfishing is not the only culprit behind a halving of marine species since 1970. Pollution, including plastic detritus which can build up in the digestive systems of fish; the loss of key habitats such as coastal mangrove swamps; and climate change are also taking a heavy toll, with the oceans becoming more acidic as a result of the carbon dioxide we are pouring into the atmosphere.

Quote
“I am terrified about acidification,” Heaps told the Guardian. “That situation is looking very bleak. We were taught in the 1980s that the solution to pollution is dilution  :P, but that suggests the oceans have an infinite capacity to absorb our pollution.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F1.bp.blogspot.com%2F-TzWpwHzCvCI%2FT_sBEnhCCpI%2FAAAAAAAAME8%2FIsLpuU8HYxc%2Fs1600%2Fnooo-way-smiley.gif&hash=b8545bd420b1e2f2c7b9f665d2093523e4ad2251) That is not true, and we have reached the capacity now.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Femoticons%2Ftuzki-bunnys%2Ftuzki-bunny-emoticon-028.gif&hash=24570cb7e8246617010ce900a07bc85117ff78ca)

She predicts that all of the world’s coral reefs could be effectively lost by 2050, if current trends are allowed to continue unchecked, and said that evidence of the effects of acidification – which damages tiny marine animals that rely on calcium to make their shells and other organs - could be found from the Antarctic to the US west coast.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-070814193155.png&hash=144ce9330e49ee84060db8753a8db69c39a14913)

However, the Die Off will eliminate most if not all of the Evil people with Empathy Disorder, because only those who cooperate and share will survive.

What do crickets taste like?

Many insects - including crickets - have the ability to take on the flavor of the food that they eat. This means that crickets will likely taste somewhat different from one farm to the next depending on what kind of diet they're fed. Our crickets have a diet that consists of a lot of different grains and corn and fresh vegetables. Our crickets taste a little bit like sweet corn with a slight nutty or sunflower seed flavor.

Perhaps we're fuc ked after all.

Quote
Containing radiation equivalent to 14,000 times the amount released in the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima 68 years ago, more than 1,300 used fuel rod assemblies packed tightly together need to be removed from a building that is vulnerable to collapse, should another large earthquake hit the area.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/14/us-japan-fukushima-insight-idUSBRE97D00M20130814 (http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/14/us-japan-fukushima-insight-idUSBRE97D00M20130814)

The problem is if the spent fuel gets too close, they will produce a fission reaction and explode with a force much larger than any fission bomb given the total amount of fuel on the site. All the fuel in all the reactors and all the storage pools at this site (1760 tons of Uranium per slide #4) would be consumed in such a mega-explosion.

In comparison, Fat Man and Little Boy weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki contained less than a hundred pounds each of fissile material – See more at: http://www.dcbureau.org/20110314781/natural-resources-news-service/fission-criticality-in-cooling-ponds-threaten-explosion-at-fukushima.html (http://www.dcbureau.org/20110314781/natural-resources-news-service/fission-criticality-in-cooling-ponds-threaten-explosion-at-fukushima.html)

Once the fuel is uncovered, it could become hot enough to cause the metal cladding encasing the uranium fuel to rupture and catch fire, which in turn could further heat up the fuel until it suffers damage. Such an event could release large amounts of radioactive substances, such as cesium-137, into the environment.

This would start in more recently discharged spent fuel, which is hotter than fuel that has been in the pool for a longer time. A typical spent fuel pool in the United States holds several hundred tons of fuel, so if a fire were to propagate from the hotter to the colder fuel a radioactive release could be very large.

http://www.ucsusa.org/nuclear_power/making-nuclear-power-safer/handling-nuclear-waste/safer-storage-of-spent-fuel.html#.VUp3n5Om2J8 (http://www.ucsusa.org/nuclear_power/making-nuclear-power-safer/handling-nuclear-waste/safer-storage-of-spent-fuel.html#.VUp3n5Om2J8)

You may be right. RE will wait for the "fat lady" to sing. I just keep adding and subtracting in the biosphere math equation. The subtraction is rather consistent and the trajectory looks suicidal.

Only Bagdad Bob could be optimistic about out trajectory as a species. WHEN the last homo SAP buys the farm is not the issue. Also, the "long enough time line" excuse that somehow ignores all the crap and poisons and evil bastards adding more that we have to deal with is like dancing on a plank you are walking. Of course we are all alive until we die. Everybody has their own timeline and some have a longer one than others.

But optimism has no place in the biosphere math we are witnessing. We are walking a plank. The fact that it "ain't over yet" isn't the issue. All of us will do what we can to extend our stay in the valley of tears.

That's why I think comments that describe graphically how fu cked we are have a proper place in this discussion. I think, if we are to survive, a bare bones, no bull sh it, no happy talk, no "we can do this" locker room coach optimism is what we need to prevent our species from buying the farm. Things are not just "iffy"; they are AWFUL, and getting WORSE!

Here's a fictional tale about our very possible future that you might enjoy. Feel free to pass it on with, or without, attribution.

The following infomap is accurate. Though some issues of main interest like the Volkswagen scandal, Black Lives Matter, threatened wolves and legalizing weed certainly have merit, because this map shows a population with an inability to prioritize the importance of competing issues, it qualifies more as gallows humor than apocalyptic humor.

Some, when pondering this sad evidence of the success of fascist media to make suckers of the populace through scare mongering propaganda and mindless distractions, in the face of the overwhelming evidence of our degraded democracy and climate, may not even find this very funny.

But I have to admit that I got a kick out of Colorado's main interest. ;D

Doctors Sound Alarm as State of Emergency Declared over CA Gas Leak: Leave Now

Claire Bernish
January 7, 2016

(ANTIMEDIA) Los Angeles, CA — California Governor Jerry Brown finally declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, concerning the ongoing, currently unstoppable methane gas leak spewing from Aliso Canyon that has created a nightmare for residents of Porter Ranch.

“I will tell you, this goes well beyond Porter Ranch. We’ve had complaints from as far as Chatsworth, Northridge, and Granada Hills,” emphasized Los Angeles City Councilman Mitchell Englander during a Porter Ranch town hall meeting on December 28. “Apparently this plume of toxic chemicals and whatever it might be, doesn’t know zip codes […] This is the equivalent of the BP oil spill on land, in a populated community.”

Aliso Canyon sits less than two and a half miles from Porter Ranch and less than 30 miles from the city of Los Angeles — the second most populous city in the United States — whose outlying total statistical area includes nearly 18 million residents, as of 2013.

Brown has been widely criticized for lack of decisive action on the leak, which is erupting from its underground storage area with all the force “of a volcano.” Under Wednesday’s declaration, “all state agencies will utilize state personnel, equipment, and facilities to ensure a continuous and thorough state response to this incident.”

Porter Ranch residents have been evacuating the area for some time, though SoCalGas’ rather maladroit handling of the relocation procedure has been a nightmare — and the cause for a mounting number of lawsuits, including one from the L.A. city attorney’s office.

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer filed a civil lawsuit last month concerning the massive methane leak’s impact on area residents’ health and damage to the environment — which alleged failure by SoCalGas to prevent the leak and further exacerbation of “the effects of that failure by allowing acute odor and health problems faced by the community to persist for more than a month, to say nothing about the indefinite time it will persist into the future.”

RE,
One of my relatives that swindled and defrauded me out of my inheritance lives with his wife (who helped in the swindle) 2.59 miles east-south-east (down hill and normally DOWNWIND) from ground zero of this gas leak in a Granada Hills McMansion. Him and his wife are great defenders of military intervention in the Middle East (see: wars for oil in general and the fossil fuel hegemony in particular).

There is a God.

A major offshore gas discovery has been made by Kosmos Energy that looks likely to contain reserves greater than 20 trillion cubic feet.

Texas based
Kosmos Energy made the discovery, with the offshore drillship Atwood Achiever, whilst exploring offshore Senegal.

Kosmos announced the news Wednesday 27th saying: “We are pleased to have delivered another major discovery with our first exploration well offshore Senegal.”

Offshore Gas Discovery

The Guembeul-1 offshore gas discovery is part of Kosmos Energy’s wider exploration of an area located due north of Senegalese capital Dakar. The firm is officially calling the the offshore discovery ‘significant’.

Kosmos stated that they now believe the wider Tortue reservoir formation, which includes Guembeul-1, holds reserves in the region of 11 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).

They have also been more bullish with their estimations of gas reserves across the entire complex, upping them form 15 Tcf to 17 Tcf, although further exploration wells over wider area are yet to be drilled.

The remaining wells are likely to tip the gross reserves north of 20 trillion cubic feet of natural gas bringing it further towards ENI’s giant Zohr gas discovery that came in at 30 trillion cubic feet last year.

Commenting on the news Kosmos Energy CEO, Andrew G. Inglis, said: “Guembeul-1 confirms the presence of a world class gas resource that extends into both Senegal and Mauritania.”

“With our successful appraisal program and support of both governments, the initial gas development is gaining momentum,”

“The Guembeul-1 well continues our 100% success rate in the outboard Cretaceous petroleum system offshore Senegal and Mauritania, which we believe is a strategically important new oil and gas province and we are focused on unlocking the basin’s full potential.”

Guembeul-1 was drilled by the Atwood Achiever drillship in a water depth of 8,858 feet (2,700m) and a total well depth of 17,208 feet (5,245m), with the well encountering a net gas pay of 331 feet (101m).

Kosmos Energy Senegal

The Guembeul-1 is part of a joint venture between Kosmos Energy 60%; Timis Corporation Limited 30%; and Petrosen 10%.

Under the terms of the Senegal offshore licence, Kosmos are entitled to explore the area offshore St Louis, with a Senegal Government production sharing agreement coming in to force when production starts.

Atwood Achiever

The Atwood Achiever deepwater drillship, delivered in 2014 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in Korea, is on lease from Atwood Oceanics at a day rate of US$495,500.

The drillship has been designed to operate in a maximum water depth of 12,000 ft (3,657 m) and the maximum drilling depth of 40,000 ft (12,192 m).

Solstad Offshore Says Consolidation Needed to Restore Profits   (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2F165fs373950.gif&hash=ad797fcc08a061d3ae50ee49ccd9f3d517fb7496)  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Fgen152.gif&hash=d5b10968fe56c4cb95fae17cee3cb420a5f4e2da)
February 24, 2016 by Reuters

OSLO, Feb 24 (Reuters) – Offshore supply vessel owners must form larger companies in order to restore profitability to an industry battered by plunging demand from oil firms, the head of Norway’s Solstad Offshore said on Wednesday.

With crude prices down more than 70 percent since mid-2014, energy firms have sharply cut their investments and thus rent less equipment from suppliers.

So far about 100 vessels have been removed from Solstad’s main North Sea market, but with only limited effect on rates for its anchor handling ships and no effect for its platform supply ships, where rates remains below crew costs.

“Something has to happen on a structural level because even though boats are taken out of operations and laid up, the owner side is so fragmented that the path to reaching sustainable rate levels is far too long,” Chief Executive Officer Lars Peder Solstad told Reuters.

According to Solstad there are currently some 70 to 80 vessels operating in the spot market in the North Sea and up to 30 different owners.

“I think the industry will look different a couple of years from now.
(https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-010215143525.png&hash=5bd7bd57f7d770273b7d73d29697fe3a0cc11e8f)

There will be bigger units, either at the company level or within segments. Maybe both. We believe this is coming and we want to be a part of this,” he added.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Fp8.gif&hash=34db9228a959b3b83fc65b38a1aa92a40d56f976)

So far, Solstad has mothballed 13 vessels and initiated cost saving initiatives of up to 500 million Norwegian crowns ($57.35 million) on an annualised basis to prepare for weak markets lasting for a longer period.

It has also started discussions with banks and creditors (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Ftissue.gif&hash=f8d05db8e11569882e0effbdd719e2b2e95c6785) to come up with a plan for how to adjust to a new activity level that none of the players in the industry had prepared for. (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Fshame.gif&hash=88b5b0c8644862ef4930e3c7e3556db6c3bf600f)

“It will be weak into 2018. There may be rays of lights, the oil price might rise and things can happen, but we must be careful about being too optimistic. We have to be realistic and take into account that it might even get worse,”  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.desismileys.com%2Fsmileys%2Fdesismileys_0293.gif&hash=b1af4868ed8f18c30e637f8cbcb79002f6f71039) Solstad said.

The firm said however that the subsea segment was still a bright spot, despite pressure on rates, and that it had ongoing discussions with clients regarding new contracts and contract extensions.

Quote
Late on Tuesday, Solstad reported an operation loss of 1.1 billion Norwegian crowns for the fourth quarter, hit by vessel impairments of 1.35 billion, compared to a profit of 273 million in the same quarter last year.

Solstad also said the board would propose that no dividend was paid for 2015. ($1 = 8.7178 Norwegian crowns) (Reporting by Henrik Stolen, editing by Terje Solsvik)

Nicolas Torres  February 26, 2016

A former BP site manager was found not guilty on Thursday for a Clean Water Act violation charge tied to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill.

According to the Associated Press, former rig supervisor Robert Kaluza was facing a single count of violating the Clean Water Act that carried a penalty of up to a year in prison.

Kaluza, 65, was accused of bungling a critical pressure test that may have indicated the Macando well was not securely plugged with mud and cement, the AP said.

“We’re just pleased and thankful that the jury carefully considered the evidence and came to a just verdict,” Kaluza’s lawyers told Bloomberg.

Kaluza was the final defendant facing charges related to the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon accident that killed 11 people and caused the largest oil spill in U.S. history.

In December, federal prosecutors filed a motion to drop involuntary manslaughter charges against Kaluza and Donald Vidrine, a fellow site manager, for their roles in the accident.

The two men were facing 11 counts of seaman’s manslaughter, but in accordance with a 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling earlier this year, the charges were dismissed because their duties did not qualify them for a maritime crime.

Vidrine pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor violation of the Clean Water Act in December and will be sentenced in April.

He is facing up to 10 months of probation and financial penalties.

ExxonMobil said Monday that it added proved oil and gas reserves of 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent in 2015.

The company said the reserve adds replaced 67 percent of production, including a 219 percent replacement ratio for crude oil and other liquids.

ExxonMobil’s proved reserves totaled 24.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent at the end of 2015, with liquids representing 59 percent of proved reserves, up from 54 percent in 2014.

Liquid additions during 2015 totaled 1.9 billion barrels, Exxon said.

Natural gas proved reserves were reduced by 834 million barrels of oil equivalent with most of those reductions occurring in the United States and “reflecting the change in natural gas prices.”

“The company expects this gas to be developed and booked as proved reserves in the future,” Exxon said.

During 2015, ExxonMobil added 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent to its resource base through by-the-bit exploration discoveries, undeveloped resource additions and strategic acquisitions.

ExxonMobil’s by-the-bit exploration success in 2015 included a significant oil discovery offshore Guyana and additional discoveries in Iraq, Australia, Romania and Nigeria.

Strategic unconventional resource additions were also made in the Permian Basin in West Texas, Canada and Argentina.

The company also added reserves in Abu Dhabi, Canada, Kazakhstan and Angola last year.

Overall, Exxon’s resource base totaled more than 91 billion barrels of oil equivalent at the end of 2015, taking into account field revisions, production and asset sales.

The resource base includes proved reserves, plus other discovered resources that are expected to be ultimately recovered.

Exxon said its reserves life at current production rates is 16 years.

The Fossil fuel Industry elephant TERMITE in the Biosphere room...  :P

Quote

In the late 1990’s, as they designed their own offshore oil rigs to account for sea level rise, Mobil oil paid for advertisements telling the American people that climate science was uncertain and that the U.S. should not join other nations in a global climate agreement.2

Neva Rockefeller Goodwin, the great grand-daughter of ExxonMobil’s founder, donated her shares this year so that the proceeds could be used to support nonprofit work to fight global warming.3

After 15 years of failed shareholder engagement and meetings between the Rockefeller family and ExxonMobil to encourage diversification, she declared that “I lost faith in ExxonMobil’s future value.”4

Let’s be clear – If the Rockefellers cannot convince ExxonMobil to change, Vermont will not succeed in effecting change through shareholder engagement.

Agelbert NOTE: It looks a bit top heavy to me. I once had a flight student who was a bridge crew member on a cruise ship. He gave me a tour of the bridge and controls. He explained to me that they don't just steer with the rudder. They have vanes under the water line that work just like ailerons in an aircraft. That is, they keep it from listing so much that the unstable center of gravity will cause it to fall sideways and sink. But that ship didn't half the number of floors this one has.

And then there are those pesky "rogue" waves that global warming is goosing in size and frequency that will make it rather difficult for the vanes trying to keep a ship from flopping over on its side...    (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-300714025456.bmp&hash=f4e4a260bd60d3f34ca86fed93c47d5fb4117cfd)

Falklands: A New Billion Oil Barrel Basin (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Facigar.gif&hash=dc9dccf92c6c88c99611b06c86d92629d69f2978) Say Rockhopper

Rockhopper Exploration’s oil reserves in North Falkland have doubled to more than 300 million barrels in what experts believe to be a billion barrel basin.

The latest independent audit of the basin revealed that both the Sea Lion and Isobel Elaine oil fields hold half a billion barrels of recoverable oil reserves each.

“In our view, this new audit confirms the potential of the North Falklands to be a billion barrel basin”, the company Chief Executive Officer Simon Moody said.

Rockhopper Doubles Oil Reserve Estimates In Falklands

Within the basin, the company owns more than 50% of two licence areas estimated to hold a total of 747 million barrels of oil and gas reserves.

The independent audit was prepared by ERCE and follows a successful drilling programme which made new discoveries and concluded in February.

The resources are expected to be developed in two phases, with the first phase focusing on the resources in the northeast of the Sea Lion area. Phase 1 is expected to rely upon the operator, Premier Oil, and its plans to bring in an additional partner to share costs.

According to Premier, a 18-month FEED phase began in January, but the final investment decision for Sea Lion remains dependent upon “the evolution of project economics” and the outlook on oil prices.

A Billion Oil Barrel Basin

“The Sea Lion Complex itself holds over half a billion barrels with almost 270 million barrels of low risk near field upside, which we believe could be assessed with as few as 3 or 4 more optimally targeted wells”, Moody added.

“In addition, the Isobel Elaine discovery has the potential to be a third regional development potentially containing over 500 million barrels”, he stated further.

According to the executive, “a billion barrels of recoverable oil is within reach within the basin thanks to the outstanding track record of our sub surface team”.

SNIPPET:

Quote
It’s a picture that’s worth a thousand choruses of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Here in the Seventh Straight Successful Year of the Recovery from the Great Recession, tucked into a corner of the Arizona Desert, is a line of parked Union Pacific locomotives. It was discovered on Google Earth, so it is, as they say, visible from space. There are 292 of them, baking in the sun like so many dinosaur skeletons, in a line stretching almost five miles. They, and the people who used to run them, are now “excess capacity” for one of the country’s largest freight haulers. In this, the Seventh Straight Successful Year of the Great Recovery.

No one should be surprised. But even when you know that trade — the buying and selling of stuff — has been slowing down all over the world for years, it is startling to see such stark, graphic evidence that we are all in deep trouble.

•Rail freight tonnage in the U.S. is down — by 11% in April compared with April 2015. Volumes of oil, coal, and shipping containers are off even more sharply. Somewhere there are graveyards for excess railroad cars that dwarf the locomotive park.

•The world’s great fleets of oil tankers, container ships and dry-cargo vessels, along with the world’s largest ports, are contracting calamitously as the volumes of cargo shrink implacably.

•China, the “economic miracle” of the past decade, with its ten-percent-per-year growth and bottomless appetite for oil, coal, and raw materials, is staggering to a hard landing. China now has a bottomless appetite for debt, which can only delay the landing, not soften it.

•Corporate profits reported so far for the first quarter of 2016 (by the S&P 500) are down 8%, the third quarter of declining profits and the worst drop since 2009.

•Corporate defaults — failure to pay loans when due — are running at levels last seen in 2009 (nearly 50 companies so far this year.

Only two people I know of seem to understand the root of this problem: Henry Ford and Howard Davidowitz. Ford, according to persistent legend, doubled his workers’ wages because he realized that if they weren’t making enough money to afford to buy one of his cars he would go out of business. (Never mind whether the story is true or not, it contains an important truth.) Davidowitz, a world class consultant to retail merchants, said upon analysis he found that the problem was that the consumers on whom everyone is relying to save the economy don’t have — and I’m quoting here — “any f u c k i n g money.

FOR 40 YEARS, LIBERALS HAVE ACCEPTED DEFEAT AND CALLED IT “INCREMENTAL PROGRESS (http://usapoliticsnow.com/?p=754)

Well, that is because the real liberals were demonized and ostracized and marginalized and imprisoned through the clever pig man device of labeling them "anarchists" (and other groundless derogatory terms).

The only difference today is that the force of the coming climate catastrophe will overcome the TPTB mens rea propaganda of the ubiquitous, mealy mouthed, incrementalist "progress", business as usual,  status quo worshipping quislings.

For those biosphere math challenged folks that don't see a connection between dirty politics and dirty energy, there is nothing that can be done for them. Their heads are inserted at such a distance up their collective descending colons that their consequent myopic delusions make them incorrigible and doomed to perish in a paroxysm of dirty energy happy talk bean counting. Reality based thinking is just not their thing.

THE FACTS:

Centralized DIRTY energy equals centralized (i.e. fascist) DIRTY political power. Anybody that does not get that did not study the history of the 20th century.

YOU are dependent TOTALLY on the gooberment for the incredibly lengthy and fragile logistics chain of energy from the exploitation to that gas station. TPTB can shut it off if you don't tow the line ANY TIME they want to.

They can ALSO control the price.

They can ALSO label dirty centralized energy a "national security" resource requiring "subsidies".

THAT is why TPTB have done absolutely everything in their considerable power to keep the energy centralized.

Decentralized CLEAN Energy equals distributed (i.e. DEMOCRATIC) political power.

THAT is why TPTB prefer DIRTY energy to Renewable Energy.

A degraded democracy is the DIRECT result of centralized energy  (it's kind of hard to set up a nuclear power plant, a coal mine or an oil refinery next to an oil well in your back yard).

It ain't poisonal, it's just bidness as usual.

When no alternative is available due to catastrophic climate change, the gooberments will be FORCED to move TOTALLY away from centralized infrastructure for energy. THAT will cause the POLITICAL power, now centralized to our detriment, to be decentralized. TPTB won't like it one bit. But they will be obligated to do it as a survival mechanism.

Go Greenland BIG MELT!

We see that same technique alive and well today in the machinations of David Brock and other Hillbots' attacks on Sanders and supporters. But then how did we get here?

I suggest we look first at the Democratic Leadership Council and the sudden lurch to the right, exemplified by class-traitor Bill Clinton who extolled the viability of Third Way politicians and as a DLC success story. Secure in power, the DLC sold off its former values and constituencies for parts, or more to the point, bundled campaign contributions.
Rahm Emanuel was a noted bagman for the DLC. Democrats who adhere to the DLC's philosophy often call themselves "New Democrats." And they have never seen a campaign contribution they didn't like.

And, as a coup de grace, you should know that the historical records of the DLC have been purchased by the Clinton Foundation.

Remember Clinton's strategy of "triangulation?" The net result has been concession after concession to the opposition and promotion of a neoliberal economic agenda favorable to corporations and banksters, including those seeking to privatize public services, while alienating traditionally-allied voters and working-class people. And utter, complete sellout of ordinary citizens.

Yeah, Rahmbo, I got yer "Third Way" right here.

Yep. Triangulation was probably code speech for isolation and strangulation of the CFS reasonable and caring voice of we-the-people on behalf of the wishes of the oligarchic **** driving this country and our species into an evolutionary dead end.

Booming Cruise Industry  :o Reports Better-Than-Expected Passenger Numbers in 2015

June 3, 2016 by gCaptain

The Cruise Lines International Association has bumped up its passenger predictions for 2016 after numbers showed that the industry surpassed its 2015 passenger projections.

According to CLIA, the industry reported a total of 23.2 million passengers on ocean cruises globally in 2015, up from a projection of 23 million, and a 4-percent increase over 2014. As a result of steady year-over-year increases, CLIA has modified 2016 expectations and is now predicting 24.2 million travelers will set sail on ocean cruises around the world.

A statement from CLIA says the numbers show that the industry is stronger than ever, coming during a period where pretty much every other maritime sector is struggling.

“The success in 2015 demonstrates the cruise industry’s continued strength in the overall travel sector,” said Cindy D’Aoust, president and CEO, CLIA. “This is a direct result of the amazing work and commitment of our community of Cruise Lines, Executive Partners and Travel Agencies and Agents. Plus, with the highest satisfaction rates among all leisure travel segments, it reflects that a cruise vacation is the vacation of choice for travelers around the world.”

CLIA says that Much of the industry’s growth can be attributed to emerging regions of the world, particularly in Asia and Australia.

In 2015, Asia experienced the most growth year over year in ocean cruise passengers with another impressive 24% increase from 2014 to 2015, with a total of more than 2 million ocean cruise passengers in 2015. While Asia continues to see record growth in the cruise industry, Australia is not far behind. The region, which includes Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, experienced an incredible 14% increase in ocean cruise passengers from 2014 to 2015. Last year, a total of more than 1.1 million ocean cruise travelers originated in Australia.

“When looking at the travel industry, cruise travel has astonishing long-term growth potential since it represents only two percent of the total leisure travel market, has the highest satisfaction rates among global travelers and is growing in popularity,” CLIA said in a statement. “In fact, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, in the decade between 2004 and 2014, global cruise vacations have grown faster in popularity than land-based vacations by a 20-percent margin.”

Of course this growth has not gone unnoticed by cruise lines, with new ship orders from just about every major cruise company such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean. In 2016, a total of 27 new ocean, river, and specialty cruise ships are scheduled for delivery, according to CLIA figures.

When it comes to good PR, the entire tick family can’t catch a break. Not only are all ticks parasitic, but they can also serve as vectors for disease. While the best known tick-borne illness is Lyme Disease (an infectious disease caused by bacteria carried by numerous tick species), there’s also a really unpleasant side effect from the bite of the, rather ironically named, lone star tick.

When most people think of the phrase “lone star”, they probably think of Texas, a state whose nickname is “The Lone Star State” (because of it’s red, white, and blue flag with a single star). The lone star tick is named such because the pattern on its body looks like a single star. The irony comes into play when you consider that people associate Texas, the lone star state, with beef because of its current and historical ties with the cattle industry, but a bite from a lone star tick can induce an allergy to red meat.

Amblyomma americanum

Although the effect of the bite and the ensuing development of the allergy is still under study, the bite appears to give the victim an allergy to Galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, a carbohydrate found in the cell membranes of non-primate mammals. You read that last bit correctly, the lone star tick’s bite will make you allergic to everything from hamburgers to venison steaks to rabbit sausage, but you’ll be more than safe to eat a chimp or your neighbor.    (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1.wp.com%2Fgas2.org%2Ffiles%2F2013%2F05%2Fstupid.png&hash=03f34f8c94a314e127f3ee8c4872e721e1b04063)

Agelbert COMMENT: Thank you Sierra Club, for paving the way for Hillary Clinton to remove any and all barriers to Fracking in the USA and the world, as she did during her tenure as Secretary of State.

We are also pleased that Victoria Nuland is President Hillary Clinton's pick for Secretary of State.

Thank you Sierra Club, for ensuring a huge increase in the price of fossil fuels (i.e. price shock bonanza!) from the war tensions that Victoria Nuland, neocon State Department queen of the "let's go to war with Russia" group will joyfully generate.

We are ready, willing and able to patriotically and in altruistic fashion (OF COURSE!), work arm in arm with the Clinton Administration to provide peace, prosperity and lots of cheap, clean energy to the world for the welfare of all humanity.

I have this idea that we might be seeing the emergence of some kind of extremely prejudiced left-wing youth movement, sort of like an American Red Guard, where crowds of high school and college kids unite via social media to plan big violent protests aimed at making us all conform to the Politically Correct/BLM/Globalist BS that they have been spoon fed in the school system.

We need an extremely prejudiced left wing movement to combat the extremely prejudiced right wing movement.  Nature abhors a vacuum.

RE

I agree with you.  We don't want the Fourth Reich.

It bothers me that the Millenials are so angry, even though I think they're somewhat off-base in their thinking. They are, after all, the future.

My son called up from Chicago at 2 am on election night, furious with me because he thought I had voted for Jill Stein, and therefore aided Trump in winning. Wanted to chew me out for "throwing my vote away". I had to remind him that Trump carried Texas by a wide margin with or without my help. (I didn't actually vote for Stein anyway, although I considered it.)

I think what is so disappointing for some people is what people like Trump represents and what it conveys by not actively going against him. The image of Trump is he is sexist, racist, homophobic and has xenophobic tendencies towards immigrants. By not fighting him you are on some level condoning those things or at best thinking these issues are not important.

The other thing, by bringing people like him into office it is giving the image that Americans are somewhat uncaring, not kind and suspicious of foreigners which goes against America's traditional values. I say all this because that is the same kind of arguments made when people voted for Brexit. What is also similar were the outcries, protests and the general despair at what this voting conveyed to the international community. There were people of my age who were ashamed to be British when they heard that Brexit had won. Many people, especially the younger generation want to be seen as open minded and have socially liberal outlooks on life and Trump (or Brexit) show the complete opposite message to the outside world. Perhaps that is the source of grief and anguish your son experienced it was certainly a common sentiment among the millennial generation in Britain.

EXACTLY RIGHT! The Trailer Trash Trump people are already doing their typical right wing imitation of a certain fossil fueler by mocking these protesters and telling them to "quit whining".

As soon as Trailer Trash Trump is inaugurated, just watch the breathtakingly hypocritical position of the Republicans in Congress when they yammer about "respecting the law" and the "Constitutional right of the President" to name a Supine Supreme Court Justice and how we are a "nation of laws" and how "Unpatriotic it is to filibuster or interfere with the serious and Patriotic work of the legally elected Republican loyal servants."...
LOL

Eddie, these protests will soon blow over. The people you have to worry about are not, as your multiple posts and preoccupation with this indicate, on the left wing.

The people you have to worry about are the millennials that voted for Trailer Trash Trump that will see NO JOBS showing up within a year.

I know you don't believe that. But the racist, xenophobic, baser side of the white electorate has been unleashed. Trump is NOT going to be able to control it. I respect your opinion and understand your fears, but please consider that well to do people like you, not Trailer Treasure like me, will be in the crosshairs of those jobless whites angry at the gross double cross and mendacity of Trailer Trash Trump, regardless of the FACT that, AS IN THE PAST, Wall Street and Trump will do everything possible to encourage scapegoating the "dangerous left" as the "problem".

That is what you may be doing, albeit inadvertently. If you really believe that is a valid fear, I warn you that you won't see the danger to yourself from your own poor white neighbors. I have nothing to gain by instilling groundless fears in you. I am saying this for your welfare.

Now for some apocalyptic humor:

Meanwhile, expect the fossil fuelers to prudently explain to us how much prosperity is coming our way with the melting of all that useless ice in Antarctica and Greenland and all the world's glaciers. Never mind the pollution in the atmosphere and the oceans. Never mind the Sixth Great extinction in progress killing a disproportionately large portion of high order vertebrate and mammal species. That's just evolution and the tardigrades are just the march of evolutionary progress. (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-141113185701.png&hash=615e3c1aa9c374cb1eab5bfc1e9494f2cb05e9f7)

And sea level rise is NO PROBLEMO. Haven't you heard about Death Valley? The fossil fuel industry has great skills at building pipelines, you know. They will, for a prudent fee, of course, and to protect our national security so that New York, New Orleans and Houston won't flood, turn Death  Valley into LIFE Lake.  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2Fearthhug.gif&hash=3abcf70466f34337f2d702ebd9e02c650d5c4c20) (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F_9HT4xZyDmh4%2FTOHhxzA0wLI%2FAAAAAAAAEUk%2FoeHDS2cfxWQ%2Fs200%2FSmiley_Angel_Wings_Halo.jpg&hash=13281f1944b60773bf12b29387b70be77cc1fe16)

The hotels and pier facilities along LIFE Lake's shores, plus great gas stations strategically and conveniently placed to fuel all those 3,000 hp Evinrude speedboats will bring jobs, prosperity and beauty to America! (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smilies.4-user.de%2Finclude%2FSpiele%2Fsmilie_game_017.gif&hash=e8548890f80af23241a1d43a1ab1ca8031301f20)

Don't you know that the brave fossil fuel industry is expert at digging holes? I mean, they have world class geologists drilling hither and yon, so they know what's down there. If the oceans really are going up, something that MKing and his scientific, prudent friends in the fossil fuel industry will calmly explain is not proven yet (but just in case, they are here, like the government, to help ), it's simply a matter of relocating the sea water to new lakes the fossil fuel industry can create for Trump and the world!  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-141113185701.png&hash=615e3c1aa9c374cb1eab5bfc1e9494f2cb05e9f7)

They will all have great golf courses too! As the oceans go up, the fossil fuel industry will be happy to pipe sea water to all the below sea level places in the world. Being very scientific and prudent about all these job creating  activities, they realize that additional new holes will have to be dug for new lakes with lots of lakefront property and recreation areas.  ;D  Yes, they normally just drill without making such big holes. But the Clean Coal people are real good at making big holes. So our loyal servants Big Oil, & Gas plus Big Coal will dig big holes in high country like the high desert and pump sea water to them to keep those pesky oceans from getting out of hand. We will all be happy to increase the subsidies for fossil fuel industry activities so they can complete this world saving venture without punitive expenses.  ;D

Yes, I know that sounds wonderful. But it gets BETTER!  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pic4ever.com%2Fimages%2F19.gif&hash=3f9f2fc2285bc756137e21463bc2a4c420b15ac3) There is an ADDED beauty to this great and noble Super project by the fossil fuel industry. All that ground they dig up (after they process the minerals appropriately, of course - they have to run a profitable business, ya know ;))  can be placed over flat land places like Kansas or Florida. They can have contractors build fancy neighborhoods that look down on the surrounding areas with spectacular views! And in places like Michigan and North Dakota, the new mountains can host sky resorts!

As MKing, would say, the future is bright for our loyal servants, the Fossil Fuel Industry.

I'm sure the Tardigrades agree.

North Pole expected to reach 50 degrees warmer than normal

Temperatures are expected to climb to just below the freezing point on Thursday, much higher than is usual during an Arctic winter.

Weston Williams @westonwolf359

December 21, 2016 —Just a few days before Christmas, Santa may have to take off a few layers to stay comfortable at the North Pole.

According to current weather models, the Arctic is going to be unseasonably warm later this week, with air temperatures climbing to just under the freezing point (32 degrees F.) on Thursday. While that may seem plenty chilly, it's sweltering by Arctic standards, about 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit above normal for this time of year.

While anomalous warm days have always been possible – weather everywhere can have odd short-term fluctuations – some indicators suggest that unseasonable warmth at the North Pole is becoming more frequent due to global climate change and melting ice.

And after a record-breaking warm year and an unusually warm November that significantly dropped ice coverage in the Arctic, it looks like 2016 may be ending on yet another unpleasantly warm note in the far north.

According to a study published in the journal Nature earlier this year, Arctic temperature spikes occur once or twice every decade since the 1950s. But this is the second December in a row where a temperature spike like this has happened in the Arctic. Last year's spike was even more extreme than this one is predicted to be, with temperatures passing the melting point, an extremely rare occurrence in an Arctic winter.

The predicted temperatures later this week are driven in part by a series of storms that are bringing uncommonly warm air to the region. The main culprit is a storm set to hit Greenland and Britain that could be a record setter for strongest storm to develop in that area of the North Atlantic.

While two consecutive years of unseasonable heat in Arctic winter could be an indicator of climate change, Zachary Labe, a doctoral student researching the Arctic at the University of California-Irvine, cautions that two similar instances in a row do not necessarily define a new normal – at least, not yet.

"I don't think anyone can for sure say" that these unseasonable temperatures are becoming more common, Mr. Labe told The Washington Post. "The variability in the Arctic is tremendous."

A heat spike like this may be unusual, but the overall upward climb in Arctic temperatures is clear. While the rest of the world has also been feeling the heat on climate change, the Arctic is warming about twice as fast as the rest of the globe, making for much more dramatic environmental shifts in the far North.

In November, for instance, a month usually associated with the growth of ice in the Arctic, a sudden reversal in this trend led to the loss of 19,000 square miles of ice over five days, a phenomenon only precedented by a smaller ice loss in 2013, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Increasingly low ice coverage
may also have contributed to this week's projected highs, since the depleted ice cover east of the Nordic sea has created a channel for warmer air to flow North.

Quote
"You have more real estate available to advect the warm and moist air northward,"
Ryan Maue, a meteorologist with WeatherBell Analytics, told The Washington Post.

Did you know that Trump has a fetish for the number 666? The Trump tower is 666 feet high and Trump lives on the 66th floor. Perhaps his bedroom is in the 66.6th part of the building. LOL!

The reason 666 is a big deal for a lot of people that like money is because King Solomon, reputed to be the richest person in history, received a tribute of 666 "talents" (a LARGE several pound measure of gold) each year. But in the New Testament of the bible, the number 666 is associated with the anti-Christ.

I was gob smacked when I learned that Trump's Jewish son-in-law is involved in a $666,000,000 financing deal with Santander Bank (world class crooks - 20th largest bank in the world that unloaded junk bonds on customers without warning of the risk) for some building project.

It looks like Trump wants to play the role of the End Times World Leader, whether he believes in any scripture or not.

At any rate, he is really obsessed with the number 666. I find that strange and troubling. Hitler was superstitious too...
Top five Donald Trump eerie 666 connections: (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-311013200859.png&hash=a7aaaa9f04c1e3e2c948723b5f8c13fe814dacd4)

 1. Trump Tower is on 666 Fifth Avenue, New York City

 2. The Tower also happens to measure 666 feet tall

 3. Trump inherited his grandmother’s real estate empire when she died on June 6, 1966 = 6-6-6

 4. The billionaire tycoon announced his candidacy for president on June 16, 2015 = 6 + (1×6) + (1+5) = 6-6-6

 5. And the year 2016 when he won the US election = 666+666+666+6+6+6

10 Reasons The Republican Attacks On Clean Energy & Electric Vehicles Are So Smart (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-280515145049.png&hash=84e87515e750391c1f1bca6d6ae06485972bfa81)  (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-051113192052.png&hash=93c42ef9f18fc5d9da50fd91fc19f70009f95f85)

December 11th, 2017 by Zachary Shahan

Republicans are interesting creatures. There are the voters, and then there are the politicians. The voters like things like clean air, jobs, Social Security, and ice cream. The politicians, on the other hand, like to let corporations pollute as much as they want, have been known to crash a global economy from time to time1, seem to always be looking for a way to “legitimately” cut holes in the social safety net (note: they’re working on a super clever attempt to do this right now), and like to melt ice cream via flamethrowers when the ice cream eater isn’t looking. (https://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.createaforum.com%2Fgallery%2Frenewablerevolution%2F3-311013200859.png&hash=a7aaaa9f04c1e3e2c948723b5f8c13fe814dacd4)

But hey, in the spirit of Monday, below are 10 reasons the latest Republican attacks on clean energy and electric vehicles might actually be a good thing.

1. The oil, coal, and natural gas industries simply haven’t had a fair enough head start via government subsidies. The trillions in subsidies they’ve received from the US government in the past several decades are not enough to put them on equal footing with renewable energy and electric vehicles today. Thus, it only makes sense to cut cleantech subsidies and give fossil fuels more subsidies for the time being.

2. While many people — the vast majority of them — don’t like pollution, some people prefer to breathe in potentially cancer-causing pollutants. It’s not fair that those people normally don’t get a say. It’s unfair that people who like pollution are always on the losing end of the conversation. They have a right to freedom of speech as well! Since the pollution lovers don’t get enough airtime, we should just cut any governmental support for clean technologies. That should balance things out.

3. Taking away subsidies prematurely hurts investor confidence in the government and crushes medium- and long-term investment plans. This is good since it’s the government’s role to indiscriminately attack and destabilize the investment community. Well, it’s good when it comes to renewable energy and electric vehicles. It’s not good when it comes to oil, gas, coal, and nuclear, all of which should continue to get subsidies.

4. Putting government money into young and quickly developing industries increases the chance or extent to which our society will benefit from 21st century technological and economic leadership. If the US supports such industries, that is not really fair to the Chinese. The Chinese are working hard and trying to be practical in order to become a bigger and bigger economic player, so why should we interfere? China deserves a massive economic win in the remainder of the century due to its foresight — and just because it’s China’s turn. Yeah?

5. Air pollution disproportionately hurts lower-income communities. The goal of any good government should be to hurt the lower-income and middle-income masses while giving more money to the super rich. That’s just good governance.

6. A livable climate is super overrated. We’re all going to be living on Mars soon anyway. Why waste time and money on trying to protect Earth and its human inhabitants.

7. Supporting clean energy and electric vehicles would improve our national security and our resilience in the face of various global fuel challenges. That’s just not much fun. It’s much more exciting to put lives at risk via more wars and dependence on foreign imports. (Also, those wars are great for our national debt. Just ask George W. Bush.)

8. Healthy citizens live longer, which means more services and support for those people over time. It’s cheaper and simpler if large numbers of American citizens die prematurely from high levels of pollution and more extreme natural disasters. Duh.

9. Billionaires and big corporations in the oil, gas, and coal industries put millions of dollars into buying Republican politicians funding Republican campaigns. It would be a horrible message for the world and a breakdown in our democracy if it turned out billionaires and big corporations couldn’t shape the law of the land in a way that benefited them over others.

10. Come on — the whole world needs to come crashing down in order to instill a little humility. How will we put our collective ego into check if we don’t tank the economy, tank our health, and destroy our climate?

As they say in Brookyn: Cheer up! No matter how bad things are, they can always get woise.

🌈 Enjoy the SONG: 🌟 (https://youtu.be/-Y2oXOvXIc8?t=2417)

Scene: Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer has run away from home and is in a cave. The current resident of the cave, an arctic fox with a brooklyn accent :D, cheers him up with the song in the link above.

Arctic fox: I can read ya like a book. Your family never understood you. Your friends, they all turned their backs on you. You couldn't take it any more so you packed and fled.

Rudolf: Wow, you're good.

Arctic fox: Nyaaa. Here's a little secret kid. When things get bad, I mean REAL BAD, just remember it could always be woise. Allow me to elaborate.

Song Lyrics: If the glass looks half empty and your prospects are low, attitude adjustment is the only way to go; things could be woise than that.

You could be lost in the desert, 200 degrees, no water around and lots of snakes and bees.

Remember it's tough, and it's cold out there, life sometimes can be unfair.

So for every step forward, there's a step in revoise. Things could be better, they could always be woise.

Yes, things could be better in this big univoise, but remember it could always be woise.

Yes, things could be better in this big univoise, but remember it could always be woise.

Here's a fictional tale about our very possible future that you might enjoy. Feel free to pass it on with, or without, attribution.

Gardener Commander Zarkploof

It is clear (https://cleantechnica.com/2020/03/13/trump-plan-for-rising-sea-levels-eminent-domain-evictions/) that 🦀 Trump is infected with the moronavirus. There is no cure for that. However, confinement in a nice padded room with lots of psychotropic medication therapy by a team of dedicated psychiatrists can keep others from being infected.

Moronavirus contagion must be halted to prevent a National moronavirus pandemic.

The 🐘 Republican Party politicians. too many 🎩 Blue dog Democrats and the 🐍 DNC leadership appear to be also infected with moronavirus.

Senator Bernie Sanders, though appearing to be lucid up until recently, began to show moronavirus symptoms when he claimed that fracking champion 🦕 Biden was his "friend".

Title: The respirators were worn by the people with care, With hopes that the virus wouldn't be there
Post by: AGelbert on May 08, 2020, 04:56:31 pm
Quote
🦇 Adam Gits
'Twas the Lunar New Year, when all through the proletariat
Not a game meat was cooking, not even a bat;
The respirators were worn by the people with care,
With hopes that the virus wouldn't be there;

The infected were nestled in hospital beds,
While burning hot fevers were cooking their heads;
And mamma in quarantine, and I in house arrest,
Cried ourselves to sleep as the illness progressed,

When out in Wuhan arose a new hospital,
It sprang up so fast it seemed impossible.
Away the sick were taken like a flash,
But later they died and cremated like trash.

Eventually the truth came and damn it was sad
The virus was on purpose and made in a lab,
When, what did scientific eyes should see,
It was a bat virus with added HIV;

The virus spread fast, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment the world would get sick.
More rapid than eagles the accusers they came,
They knew the communist party was to blame;

The economy tanked, supply chains ran dry,
Airports shut down, nobody could fly,
People panicked as store shelves went bare,
Bodies piled high, people filled with despair;

Big pharma stepped in, look a vaccine!
But the after effects were sick and obscene,
The virus itself was part one of two,
The vaccine was something we couldn't undo;

The Earth would go on, but humans were done,
So spread your *** cheeks and insert your thumb,
The Earth yelled something harsh and succinct,
I'M SO GLAD HUMANS ARE EXTINCT!

Agelbert NOTE: It only hurts when you laugh.

What causes people suffering from lung diseases to feel breathless is not the fall in oxygen levels but rather the body sensing the rising levels of carbon dioxide.
