Agnotology The Making and Unmaking of Ignorance

Edited by Robert N. Proctor and Londa Schiebinger

What don't we know, and why don't we know it? What keeps ignorance alive, or allows it to be used as a political instrument? Agnotology—the study of ignorance—provides a new theoretical perspective to broaden traditional questions about "how we know" to ask: Why don't we know what we don't know?

The essays assembled in Agnotology show that ignorance is often more than just an absence of knowledge; it can also be the outcome of cultural and political struggles. Ignorance has a history and a political geography, but there are also things people don't want you to know ("Doubt is our product" is the tobacco industry slogan).

Individual chapters treat examples from the realms of

֍ global climate change,

֍ military secrecy,

֍ female orgasm,

֍ environmental denialism,

֍ Native American paleontology,

֍ theoretical archaeology,

֍ racial ignorance,

֍ and more.

The goal of this volume is to better understand how and why various forms of knowing do not come to be, or have disappeared, or have become invisible.

About the author

Robert N. Proctor is Professor of the History of Science at Stanford University and the author of The Nazi War on Cancer (1999) and Cancer Wars: How Politics Shapes What We Know and Don't Know (1995). Londa Schiebinger is the John L. Hinds Professor of History of Science and the Barbara D. Finberg Director of the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University. Her recent books include Plants and Empire: Colonial Bioprospecting in the Atlantic World (2004) and Gendered Innovations in Science and Engineering (forthcoming from Stanford).

Agelbert NOTICE: This is one of six posts I will make over the next several days on Agnotology, as excerpted from the excellent book I posted about above.

The purpose is to educate you on how TPTB game us. Feel free to pass these posts on to any naïve friends or family.  People who don't like the mushroom 🍄 treatment need to know how little access to historical truth and scientifically accurate information we actually have in this country>:(

IOW, for centuries, TPTB have had a HABIT of lying both actively and PASSIVELY (keeping information from you!). This has corrupted our culture and impeded scientific progress. It's getting WORSE, not better.

How the 🐘🦖😈 right uses fake boogeymen to do real harm

Maximillian Alvarez <contact@therealnews.com>

Jun 25, 2021

Before the hysteria over critical race theory, it was a war on “wokeness”; before that, it was a crusade against “political correctness”; before that, it was a battle against the “reverse racism” of affirmative action; before that, it was a feverish panic over an earlier iteration of “political correctness”; before that, it was a life-or-death struggle against the evils of “multiculturalism” … The right has long perfected the art of manufacturing fake boogeymen to justify cultural backlash and political crackdowns that do real harm. The pattern is clear, it’s predictable, and it’s consistent—because it works. Just look at how effortlessly conservative political figures and pundits mobilized their base over the past year to fear and fight the “threat” of critical race theory. In so doing, the right-wing outrage machine is sustaining the deep cultural resentments that made Trumpism attractive in the first place, even if Donald Trump himself is currently out of power and out of the limelight.

The outrage over critical race theory was never really about critical race theory as such. As Camika Royal, associate professor of Urban Education at Loyola University Maryland (and an actual CRT scholar), discusses with TRNN’s Jaisal Noor, most people who want to see CRT banned from schools and wiped off the face of the earth know very little about what CRT really is. Again, CRT itself is not the issue; it is merely an effective vehicle for channeling the political rage of everyday conservatives, and an even more effective vehicle for justifying conservative politicians’ calculated efforts to continue shaping society in their own image. On June 16, for instance, Texas became the latest state to ban the teaching of CRT in schools, following similar bans in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Florida. And this week, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis went one terrifying step further by signing legislation that, among other things, will make colleges and universities in Florida track the political leanings of students, faculty, and staff.

That’s not all. As we all know, voters in Georgia stunned the nation by delivering key presidential and Senate victories for Democrats in the last election cycle. In response, Republicans have used the hollow specter of “voter fraud” to launch a renewed assault on voting rights that, critics argue, directly targets traditionally non-Republican voters and will be especially detrimental to Black, Brown, and working-class people. In this week’s episode of The Marc Steiner Show ✨, Marc continues his ongoing investigation into the battle over voting rights by talking with State Rep. Renitta Shannon (District 84) from the Georgia House of Representatives about Georgia’s new voting law, which imposes stricter voter identification requirements and makes it even more difficult to secure and submit absentee ballots. (As of today, the Department of Justice is suing the state of Georgia over this voting law.)

Anyone who knows about me or has followed my work knows that I lived over half of my life as a conservative. It took many years of political education and deprogramming for me to emerge from the ideological fog that once had me and my family convinced, like today’s anti-CRT crusaders, that America as we know it is under attack. Whether it’s the content we’re producing at TRNN or the conversations we have with our coworkers, neighbors, and family members, all of us have a role to play in providing that political education for those who are receptive to it; we all have to work together to counteract the toxic ideological air conditioning coming from right-wing media. Because that air conditioning is constant, it’s effective, and the effects it can have on people are exceedingly dangerous.

No matter how fake or overblown they are, the “threats” posed by the right-wing outrage machine’s manufactured monsters will continue to 😈 stoke the fears, anxieties, and even hatred of real people—and that, in turn, will provide justification for more monstrous assaults on what’s left of our democracy.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of TRNN, and stay tuned for more important stories. Take care of yourselves, take care of each other.

CIA-developed 😈 influence strategies kept showing up in the last 18 months

SNIPPETS:

There are three types of “science” -- good science, bad science, and political science. Perhaps some of the recent confusion and conflict occurs when rational, ethical, and honest people assume others use good science when, instead, dishonest and nefarious people often use bad science or political science. ... ...

The patent is filled with many more examples of brainwashing techniques.

US Patent 8,095,492 also makes frequent mention of expert opinions, expert interviews, expertise, etc. as means by which to influence people. (NB: Textual errors are in the original quotations):

😈 “Expert opinions are also used to impact the advice provided.”

😈 “Influencing groups and individuals by applying results of social science.”

😈 “Social projection and most people think that most other people agree with them about their views on the false consensus effect, things.”

😈 “Exaggerated impressions of social support.”

😈 “The `historical movies` that come out of Hollywood are examples of how telling a good story often distorts facts.”

😈 “Asking an actor to advocate for the your position as an expert.”

😈 “When someone believes you are an expert, they will tend to defer to your more than others opinions regardless of the sensibility of those opinions.”

Don’t those sound remarkably like some of the talking points repeated so often in the news media and social media? Believe the scientists. Trust the experts. Believe the expert opinions. Yada, yada, yada.

This patent also indicates that a person or organization can 😈 create a system that tracks people as individuals and continually monitors the success of the influencing strategies on the targeted individual. A computer system can then automatically recommend influence actions to further influence the behavior of the targeted individual towards a “desired outcome.” Artificial intelligence is also mentioned in this patent.

According to a former CIA insider, “‘Everything you have in that cellphone,’ she says, pointing to an iPhone, ‘is what 😈 we were working on for our whole careers.’” It’s an interesting coincidence  ;), to say the least  ;), that the same smartphones that constantly pump information into us through social media and news apps came from the same CIA that created the original “😈 influencing strategies.”
