The rancorous vindictiveness of this 🦀 short-fingered vulgarian

Robert Harrington | 2:37 pm EST December 8, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

Many years ago, when Donald Trump was content to be merely the most hated man in New York City instead of the most hated man in the world, he had lunch with the billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson. Branson didn’t know Trump, but he looked forward to a conversation covering a broad range of issues. Instead Trump, who had just gone through one of his several bankruptcies, spent the entire time bitching about the same people. “He just spent the whole lunch talking about five people he rung up to try to get help from … and how these people had refused to help him and how his life’s mission was to destroy these people,” Branson asserted.

Donald Trump is a collector of carefully cultivated animosities. As people get added to his ever-growing list, he devotes himself to ruining their lives if he possibly can. Sometimes, as in the case of Marie Yovanovitch and Lisa Page, those animosities are not even founded in reality but are instead works of fiction manufactured from the convenient cloth of expediency. Now that he is president of the United States, of course, the ruination of the life of a person is only ever just a tweet away.

So it should come as no surprise that Voldomyr Zelensky is one of the latest occupants of Donald Trump’s enemies list. Zelensky’s crime was his failure to announce an investigation of the Bidens. (Remember, it wasn’t an actual investigation of the Bidens Trump was after. The mere announcement would do.) For his crime Trump has punished Zelensky after all. He has withheld $35 million of the $250 million federally allocated aid to Ukraine. In other words, about 14% of the aid has been held up, all because Zelensky wouldn’t hold up his end of the bargain. Not even impeachment can separate Trump from his hate list.

It has become a Republican article of faith in the no harm/no foul Ukraine mantra that, as Ukraine got their money and Donald Trump got no announcement of a Biden investigation, there is nothing to see here. Of course, one need look no further than the current residence of former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich (the Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood, Colorado) to realize that bribery doesn’t need to be successful for it to be a crime. In any case, it isn’t true that the Ukrainians have their money after all. So the Republicans can drop their pretence and go in search of another one. Trump is bribing, or even blackmailing, Zelensky after all, as it turns out. And he’s doing it right under Republican noses while he’s being impeached for it.

In a 1988 issue of Spy Magazine, Graydon Carter referred to Donald Trump as a “short-fingered vulgarian.” That reference earned Mr. Carter Donald Trump’s lifelong enmity and, because Trump responded to the insult so badly, bequeathed the world yet another focus to direct its mockery. In any case, there’s actually nothing wrong with having small hands, but there is much that is wrong with having a small mind.

Now that it has become clear that Trump has not released all the Ukrainian money, look for the Republican narrative to change accordingly from “all of the money” to “most of the money.” Donald Trump is a festering morass of insecurities, ego and lies, and there is no bottom he can go to that the Republicans will not try to defend him. The problem is not that the divide between Republicans and Democrats has grown too large, it’s that the job description for being a Republican is too scabrous, dishonest and criminal for the two to ever come together again.

So look for the term “never Trumper” to become the ubiquitous two note pejorative for anyone who is not a defender of Donald Trump in the coming year. It is a term I particularly resent. I am no more a “never Trumper” than I am a “never Hitler.” I don’t require a label to narrowly define the obvious. I’m not just against some bigots and most monsters. I’m against all bigots and I am against all monsters. Donald Trump flatters himself to suggest that I and people like me need a special label with his name attached to it to delineate us as a people standing against that which is obviously morally repugnant. And not only am I not afraid that might qualify me for his enemies list, I hope it does. It is the best evidence I know of that one is doing the right thing.

So what comes next?

Robert Harrington | 7:00 pm EST December 10, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

The two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump (how I love to write those words) have been drafted. These articles will be voted on individually, that is, one vote for each article. The articles of impeachment vote before the entire House of Representatives could possibly happen as early as Friday the thirteenth.

First, the articles will arrive on the House floor for debate. Nancy Pelosi is in control of when debate begins and how long it lasts. Naturally the Republican members will be disruptive and interruptive. They will attempt to pollute the process with juvenile shenanigans, but under Pelosi’s watch the debate will probably move ahead apace and well under control.

Then will come the delivery of the articles of impeachment to the Senate. It will begin with the words of the Senate’s sergeant at arms, Michael C. Stenger. Stenger will say, “All persons are commanded to keep silence, on pain of imprisonment, while the House of Representatives is exhibiting to the Senate of the United States articles of impeachment against Donald John Trump.” At that moment the House managers, possibly headed by Adam Schiff or Jerry Nadler, who moments before were greeted by Julie Adams, the secretary of the Senate, and told the Senate is ready to receive them, will step forward and exhibit the articles of impeachment. This presentation will take place on some to-be-determined day, possibly as early as next week but probably in early January, after the Senate has returned from its Christmas break.

Meanwhile at the United States Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts will receive a request from the Senate to come to the Capitol building the next day at 1:00 p.m. to preside over the Senate’s consideration of the impeachment articles. The chief justice will return to the Senate daily—except on Sundays—while the articles are being considered throughout Donald Trump’s trial. No one knows how long the trial will take, but as it is in the hands of a Republican majority you can depend on it being a long trial or a short trial strictly based on what is most expedient for the Republican Party, and will have absolutely nothing to do with what is best for the American people.

At the same time that the Chief Justice is receiving his invitation from the Senate, a writ of summons will be delivered to Donald Trump. The writ will include each of the articles of impeachment and call on Trump to appear before the Senate in order that he file his answer to the articles in person. If Donald Trump refuses to appear at all it will be the third time a president has been so summoned but the first time he has refused to appear.

This is the point, more or less, where the prescribed and predictable rights of an impeachment trial leave the world of the ceremonially choreographed and enter the murky waters of partisan politics. Recall that by way of sleight of hand and theatrical genius Johnny Cochran transformed a solemn criminal proceeding, with the help of a weak and publicity-hungry judge and an out-of-their-depth prosecution, from the trial of OJ Simpson to the trial of Detective Mark Fuhrman. Will the Senate proceeding be thus transformed, from the trial of Donald Trump to the trial of Joe and Hunter Biden? Very possibly.

Contrary to common mythology, the Chief Justice does not serve as a judge in an impeachment trial. The Senate itself is both judge and trier of fact, and the Chief Justice serves as its presiding officer. The rules thus require the Chief Justice to direct “all forms of the proceedings” and, in so doing, “to make and issue all orders, mandates, writs, and precepts authorized by the rules.” Any Republican Senator can effectively overrule the Chief Justice at any point by merely asking to submit that ruling to a vote. A simple majority is all that is required, and as there exists a simple majority of Republican Senators, any vote to overrule the Chief Justice is quite probably guaranteed every step of the way. It has, after all, been demonstrated that Republicans and Democrats cannot agree on a simple call for a thirty minute break in the midst of proceedings without the vote running strictly yea and nay along party lines.

In other words, and it pains me to say this, whether the trial in the Senate is long or short, it is all but guaranteed to yield a favorable outcome for Donald Trump. The Republicans will be in charge. We have already seen how they behaved during the two hearings conducted by the House, so the conclusion is virtually foregone. If we want to be rid of Donald Trump, I’m afraid we will probably have to get rid of him in November.

Agelbert NOTE: I am not yet even remotely hopeful that Republicans won't help Trump cheat to get re-elected in 2020.

IMO, this outcome is fore-ordained. Yet bringing these articles is the right thing to do for no other reason than it is the right thing to do.

Will Hurd and the others like him are craven lickspittles and have clearly abrogated their sworn oaths to defend the Constitution. The fact that he's not running for re-election must mean that he doesn't want a vote in favor of impeachment to impinge on his upcoming lobbyist income.

The Republican Party is now solely the party of White Rage. They want a King, and they'll raise one. In 18th months this Forum will be a Crime Against the State.

Yep.
Logic is the enemy and truth is a menace.

Since videos like the above, that voice thought crimes against the state, will be disappeared soon after 🦀 Trump is re-(s)elected, I have taken the treasonous (to American Fascist Oligarchs) liberty of making a screenshot (saved on my computer and other media for quick duplication in case it gets hacked) of all of Rod Serling's wise and timeless words in said video.

Freshman Democrats push for Amash as impeachment manager 🤔
Source: WaPo

A private campaign is underway to draft Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich.) as an impeachment manager in the Senate trial of President Trump, a bid to diversify House Democrats’ appeal to voters with a rare conservative voice.

A group of 30 freshman Democrats, led by Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.), has asked House leaders to consider the libertarian 👀, who left the Republican Party earlier this year, for the small group tasked with arguing its case for removing Trump in the upper chamber, according to several Democratic officials.

The thinking, according to these people, is that Amash would reach conservative voters in a way Democrats can’t, potentially bolstering their case to the public. He also would provide Democrats cover from GOP accusations that they’re pursuing a partisan impeachment; Amash is one of the most conservative members of the House and a vocal Trump critic.

“To the extent that this can be bipartisan, it should, and I think including Representative Amash amongst the impeachment managers is a smart move both for the country, for the substance and for the optics,” Phillips said, adding that Amash brings an array of qualifications: He’s an attorney, a constitutionalist and “the first and only member of the Republican conference, when he was a Republican, to show courage,” Phillips added.

The comments on the above post at the Democratic Underground are explanatory and revealing. Being an inveterate optimist, I (guardedly) consider this move to get Amash to help make the Case in the Senate for Trump's Impeachment and Removal from Office a strategy that might work. It seems, on the surface, like a smart move because, even if this tactic fails to get Trump removed from office, it will help to divide the forces now supporting Trump's re-(s)election.

All that happy talk said, it does smell like the old Clinton and Obama "go across the isle" CRAP that gave us this Fascist POTUS in the first place. :(

I am certain that, at this moment (if not a week or so ago in anticipation of this tactic - i.e. get Amash to play the "disgruntled with Trump" part well enough to con the Democrats), the Trump Team is, true to their accustomed Fascist Mafia 'buy em' or bop em' modus operandi, privately and politely predicting to Mr. Amash the negative effects (i.e. ☠️) on his political future if Trump is Impeached; followed immediately by asking, even more politely, what his price is for being their fox in the Impeachment Henhouse.

But what do I know?

House Judiciary Committee released 658-page impeachment report

December 16, 2019 1:40 pm

NBC News POLITICAL TOP STORIES

The over 600-page document dropped early Monday morning.

It explains the committee's process and justification for recommending two articles of impeachment against President Trump.

Abuse of power and Obstruction of Congress.

The report also includes dissenting views from Republican lawmakers on the committee, arguing against the articles of impeachment.

The articles stem from President Trump's pressure on Ukraine to investigate 2020 political rival Joe Biden while withholding military aid the country relies on to counter Russia as well as his efforts to block the House investigation. The president says he's done nothing wrong.

The House is expected to vote Wednesday on the impeachment articles.
