Another impeachment witness just dropped a ton of bricks on Donald Trump today

Daniel Cotter | 1:45 pm EDT October 30, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

Donald Trump has continued to talk about the “transcript” that has been released of his Ukraine phone call, and the Cult 45 and GOP feckless leadership continues to march to that tune. However, with each additional witness that comes forward and provides an opening statement and testimony, the reality is confirmed – Trump engaged in an illegal quid pro quo, and the “transcript” he released is not anywhere near the full story of what transpired.

The latest person to come forward in the Ukraine investigation that likely will soon find Trump in the Senate, being tried on numerous articles of impeachment, is 🦅 Catherine Croft. She worked for the National Security Council on Ukraine issues for the State Department and is set to testify before the House committee today. Her opening statement includes the following:

In July 2017, as the Trump Administration was considering overturning the ban on providing Ukraine defensive weapons, I was asked to join the National Security Council Staff at the White House. As the Director covering Ukraine, I staffed the President’s December 2017 decision to provide Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank missile systems. I also staffed his September 2017 meeting with then- President Poroshenko on the margins of the UN General Assembly. Throughout both, I heard—directly and indirectly—President Trump describe Ukraine as a corrupt country.

During my time at the NSC, I received multiple calls from lobbyist 😈 Robert Livingston, who told me that Ambassador Yovanovitch should be fired. He characterized Ambassador Yovanovitch as an ‘Obama holdover’ and associated with George Soros. It was not clear to me at the time—or now—at whose direction or at whose expense Mr. Livingston was seeking the removal of Ambassador Yovanovitch.

On July 18, I participated in a sub-Policy Coordination Committee video conference where an OMB representative reported that the White House Chief of Staff, 😈 Mick Mulvaney, had placed an informal hold on security assistance to Ukraine. The only reason given was that the order came at the direction of the President. I had heard about the hold before that date, but do not remember the specific date.

She was not on the call, but we have further information that Trump placed a hold on aid to Ukraine and that a lobbyist was contacting her to fire Yovanovitch. It’s another connection in the efforts Trump made to deal with Ukraine in a manner that looks more and more likely to have been a trade.

🕵️ JOHN BOLTON, YOU’RE UP

🕵️ JOHN BOLTON, YOU’RE UP

Bill Palmer | 4:43 pm EDT October 30, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

When John Bolton’s longtime sidekick Charles Kupperman asked the courts to rule on whether he should comply with a House subpoena to testify in the impeachment inquiry, or comply with a Trump White House order not to appear, Palmer Report explained that it appeared Bolton was pulling the strings. The Kupperman ruling will effectively “force” Bolton to testify as well, meaning Bolton can maintain credibility with the far-right by saying that he had no choice but to testify against Trump and take him down.

In any case, we’re about to find out if that’s what John Bolton is really up to, because House Democrats just asked him to come in and testify next week. Conveniently enough, this allows just enough time for the Kupperman court ruling to play out before Bolton is supposed to show up. Oh, and did we mention that Bolton is using the same attorney who’s handling Kupperman’s court case?

So where does this get us? If John Bolton’s master plan really is to get the courts to order him to testify in the House impeachment inquiry, and he does show up and fully cooperate, he should end up being – by far – the most useful witness to date. Not only can he corroborate what his former underlings like Fiona Hill and Colonel Vindman have said, Bolton has also spent plenty of time in close quarters with Trump, and can provide far deeper insight into whatever Trump has said about his Ukraine scandal motives.

In addition, everyone knows that John Bolton is a far-right warmonger who hates the Democrats as much as the Democrats hate him. There’s no way Donald Trump and his allies can paint Bolton as being part of some kind of partisan liberal conspiracy against Trump. You can expect Bolton to try to use his testimony to set up huge sales for his upcoming tell-all book, but that’s neither here nor there. All that matters is if Bolton is willing to give the kind of testimony that’ll take 🦀 Trump down.

Rudy Giuliani goes completely berserk after Trump nominee sells him out to Congress

Bill Palmer | 8:10 pm EDT October 30, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

Earlier today Palmer Report brought you the story of how Donald Trump’s plan to take a key impeachment witness out of the equation had apparently backfired on him. He nominated Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan to be a U.S. Ambassador, in an attempt at getting him out of the country and preventing him from testifying about the Ukraine scandal.

Trump appeared to forget that such a nomination would actually force John Sullivan to testify to the Senate during the confirmation process, which would mean he would definitely face questions from Senate Democrats about the Ukraine scandal. Sure enough, Sullivan sold Trump out today by acknowledging under oath that it’s wrong for the president to ask a foreign nation to investigate his political rivals. Sullivan also sold out Rudy Giuliani, and let’s just say that Rudy isn’t taking it well. He tweeted this bizarre meltdown attacking Sullivan:

The Amb. nominee doesn’t know what he’s talking about and shouldn’t be incorrectly speculating. This is an orchestrated attempt to harass and hinder me in my role as Donald Trump’s attorney. All of the information I obtained came from interviews conducted as private defense counsel to POTUS, to defend him against false allegations. I began obtaining this information while Mueller was still investigating his witch hunt and a full 5 months before Biden even announced his run for Pres. It won’t work!

This is all gibberish, of course. But it means that Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani are now so backed into a corner, Rudy is being forced to publicly accuse Trump’s own nominee of being part of an orchestrated conspiracy against him. Also, Rudy just confessed that he’s been criminally conspiring with Trump in the Ukraine scandal for nearly a year now – far longer than previously known.

Who’s going to be the one to tell 🦀 Donald Trump?

It was 5pm on Wednesday, August seventh 1974, in the Oval Office. The smallest number that could possibly be termed a “delegation,” three, composed of House Republican Leader John Jacob Rhodes, Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott, and, front and center, Republican Senator Barry Goldwater, sat before Richard Nixon and told him they didn’t have enough votes. Two days before, a devastating revelation, the last straw perhaps, had come in the form of a tape of Nixon talking to his chief of staff, mere days after the break-in. In it Nixon suggests that the CIA should falsely claim that national security was involved in the Watergate matter. Nixon’s hope at the time would be that the CIA would therefore tell the FBI they had to terminate their investigation.

The implication was clear: it was unequivocal obstruction of justice. The 🐘 Republican delegation was there to tell Nixon they couldn’t save him. The vote in the House would go forward to impeach, and they had, at most, 18 votes in the Senate still loyal to Nixon, but not enough to prevent conviction and expulsion from office. Sitting behind Woodrow Wilson’s desk, Nixon leaned back, sighed, and told them, “I’ve got a very difficult decision to make.”

At what precise point between then and the next day Nixon decided to resign is lost to history. But it’s clear that the decision came on the heels of, and at the suggestion by, his allies in Congress. The result, of course, is now history. Nixon was on Marine One and gone by Friday.

It is unlikely such a delegation could be mounted today, particularly a delegation of those Republican members of Congress who remain loyal to Donald Trump. And they are legion. One must suppose, with good reason, that the Trump we see in public is not far from the one his minions must tolerate in private – disingenuous, overbearing, incapable of listening to advice, particularly when the advice is cautionary and less than flattering. The image of a Donald Trump sitting quietly and enduring unflattering advice is difficult to conjure.

What sets Donald Trump apart from his predecessors is his inability to learn, to grow into the job. We know that the Mueller investigation was a nightmare for him. No sooner had it ended with a shameful presentation of flaccid understatement and dry, intellectualized equivocation on the part of Mueller, Trump, instead of accepting a kind of victory for an answer, returned the very next day to colluding with a foreign power to win the next election. The 674 day Mueller ordeal had taught him absolutely nothing. Instead it confirmed in him what he suspected all along: that Donald Trump is above the law. He even managed to find a lawyer who will say as much.

It should come as no surprise to us that a man who never reads likewise never listens. The delegation that told Nixon the home truth of his coming impeachment and conviction was smaller than it could have been. Nixon’s then chief of staff, Alexander Haig, kept it deliberately small because he wanted to avoid the appearance of a breach of the balance of power between the legislative and executive branch of government. The notion that anyone at all in the Republican Congress would dare confront Trump in a similar way is both a testimony to the hold Trump has on them and a demonstration of the sad absence of courage in the Republican Party today.

So, when the time comes, who bells the cat? I see no likely candidates. The succession of obfuscating Republican talking points – the whistleblower is disloyal, he or she has “hearsay evidence,” he or she was counseled by Adam Schiff, the process is being conducted in secret in a basement, the witnesses are unpatriotic traitors – shifts almost daily and is parroted endlessly across the GOP. Is there no one who will rid us of this turbulent presidency?

🦀 Trump White House official goes out with a bang  ;D

Bill Palmer | 12:14 am EDT October 31, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

With each passing day, the downfall of Donald Trump begins to more closely resemble a movie script. We’ve had a respected military official testify to Congress that he witnessed the President committing crimes, in a scene straight out of a Jack Ryan movie. We’ve seen a key witness who has a twin brother who is also a key witness. How many more movie moments are coming?

If you’ve been waiting for someone to resign from Donald Trump’s White House on their way into testifying against Donald Trump, well, actually that’s already happened twice, with Kurt Volker and Michael McKinley. But now it’s happening again, this time in more high profile fashion.

National Security Council official Tim Morrison is set to testify against Donald Trump to the House impeachment inquiry on Thursday. That could make things awkward for Morrison when he shows up for work at the White House on Friday after his testimony, except he won’t be showing up for work ever again. According to NPR, Morrison straight up resigned on his way out of work on Wednesday.

NPR says that Tim Morrison was planning to eventually leave the job anyway. But it raises the question of just how many people are going to end up resigning from the Trump White House during the course of this scandal. Come to think of it, by the time this is over, there may not be a Trump White House anyway.

Always remember "quid pro quo" is not defined in Federal criminal law : but "extortion" is used and defined in the Federal criminal code instead : but also, "shakedown" is still permissible in "mob speak, TV shows, our vernacular, so use as you will!

Donald Trump caught trying to bribe 🐘 Republican Senators with cash over their impeachment votes

Bill Palmer | 1:16 pm EDT October 31, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

The House passed a resolution establishing the rules and procedures of its impeachment hearings today, making it even more clear that there will inevitably be an impeachment trial in the Senate – and a vote on whether to convict and remove Donald Trump. In a fit of timing, it’s just been exposed that Trump is trying to bribe certain Republican Senators ahead of that vote.

Donald Trump is using his donor network to flood vulnerable Republican Senators with cash who supported the recent anti-impeachment resolution, but the Republican Senators who didn’t support the resolution are being left high and dry, according to a remarkable new report from Politico. It’s clear that Trump is trying to reward certain Senators on his impeachment jury with cash, while trying to punish others by withholding the cash that he knows they need for reelection.

Politico didn’t go so far as to label this outright bribery, but one legal expert did. 🦅 Richard Painter, the former Chief White House Ethics Lawyer, had this to say about the story on Twitter: “This is a bribe. Any other American who offered cash to the jury before a trial would go to prison for felony bribery. But he can get away with it? Criminal.”

The thing about career criminals like Donald Trump is that once they’re finally backed into the kind of corner where they’re fighting to stay out of prison, they’re forced to give up even the slightest pretense of pretending to follow the law. Trump is clearly pulling out all the corrupt stops in the name of trying to fend off the downfall of his presidency.
