A senior adviser to 😈 Mike Pompeo just resigned. Now he's set to testify in the impeachment probe 👍
Source: CNN

(CNN) Michael McKinley is set to testify as part of the House Democrats' impeachment probe -- less than a week after resigning as a senior adviser to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. McKinley, a former US ambassador, will appear before the House Intelligence, Oversight and Foreign Affairs committees on Wednesday, two congressional sources told CNN Monday. The former State Department adviser is appearing for a transcribed interview, according to one of the sources, which indicates he is not coming under subpoena. McKinley declined to comment ahead of his testimony.

CNN reported on Thursday that the longtime diplomat was leaving his post as a top adviser to the secretary of state -- a role he had held since May 2018. His resignation and congressional testimony come as the State Department faces increased pressure from House investigators and as numerous current and former State Department officials have expressed fear and outrage over the department's handling of the Ukraine scandal.

McKinley was deeply concerned with the silence in the top ranks at State in not defending former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie "Masha" Yovanovitch, and it was one reason he resigned, one source told CNN. The source said that McKinley had been mulling over the decision for a few weeks. A former senior State Department official told CNN that McKinley was "known to be a man of integrity, a man of principle." "If he had encountered something either that was happening in the State Department or he felt he could no longer carry out his duties without compromising his integrity and his principles, he is somebody who would feel he had no choice but to resign," they said.

McKinley had been in the foreign service for more than three decades and served as ambassador to Peru, Colombia, Afghanistan and Brazil. In a farewell email to his State Department colleagues obtained by CNN on Friday, McKinley wrote that he was "leaving the department to pursue other opportunities, wherever they might lead." The decision is personal: it's time after 37 years with the Department," he wrote. Asked about McKinley's departure in an interview in Nashville on Friday, Pompeo said his adviser "wanted to go on and begin the next phase of his life."

George Kent’s impeachment testimony yesterday was apparently devastating to Donald 🦀 Trump ;D
Bill Palmer | 12:45 pm EDT October 16, 2019

Palmer Report » Analysis

State Department official George Kent testified behind closed doors yesterday to the House impeachment inquiry, the third current or former member of the Trump administration to testify over the past few days. We haven’t seen as many details leak out about Kent’s testimony thus far – but the few details that have surfaced appear to be devastating to Donald Trump.

George Kent is the State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary and thus the highest ranking member of the Trump administration to testify in the impeachment inquiry to date. He testified yesterday that after he raised concerns about the Ukraine extortion plot, a “supervisor” told him to “lie low,” according to Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly, who was in the hearing. Why is this important?

For one thing, given his high ranking position, Kent doesn’t have a lot of “supervisors” at the State Department. So this means one of the highest ranking officials in the State Department ordered him to stay quiet about what he’d seen and heard. Not only does this establish a coverup and thus establish consciousness of guilt, it’s clear that the coverup went to some of the highest levels in the Trump regime. There’s no possible way that Donald Trump didn’t know about this coverup attempt.

George Kent also testified that Rudy Giuliani’s antics undermined “twenty-eight years” of U.S. foreign policy efforts in Ukraine, dating back to the fall of the Soviet Union. So not only did Kent establish that the Trump regime made a forceful attempt at a coverup, he established that Donald Trump’s henchman Giuliani did a historic level of damage by carrying out Trump’s corrupt extortion scheme.

Today in Trump--

I apologize for the length of today's post, but there is a lot because today it felt like the day the nation shifted. There has been so much unbelievable news that as early as 3:00 I was texting my political friends with just the fire emoji and exclamation marks, but the twists and turns seem to add up to the fact that Trump's firewall is breaking.

Since he declared his candidacy, supporters and undecideds have been able to explain away behaviors by saying they were jokes, or misunderstood, or, if something was really bad, by accepting Trump's own insistence that what had happened was not at all what the media was reporting. But that is no longer possible. Since September 13, we have learned of a plot from the White House to weaken our ally Ukraine in order to force its leader to intervene in our 2020 election. That was bad enough that it led to an impeachment inquiry, and began to crack Trump's support even in the Republican Party. And now, over the course of the past ten days, the profound debacle of our withdrawal from northern Syria, leading to the ethnic cleansing of our former allies, the release of valuable ISIS fighters, and a huge victory for Putin's Russia has ripped away whatever shreds of excuse for Trump's behavior his supporters could still clutch. These two disasters, both entirely of Trump's own making, are reinforcing each other to collapse the Trump presidency with really shocking speed. As that happens, Trump himself is melting down, increasing the momentum of the crisis.

This morning, Trump tried to change the narrative on what had happened in Syria-- a story we all saw as it unfolded after his abrupt October 6 announcement that the US would pull back the troops that were stationed in the Kurdish region of Syria, where the Kurds were fighting ISIS on our behalf. In that announcement, he said that Turkey would be moving into Syria, and that the US would get out of its way. There was an instantaneous bipartisan outcry that we would be risking the release of thousands of ISIS prisoners, and abandoning our allies, who would likely be slaughtered. As this happened just as predicted, Trump tried to change the story. He has said that he didn't green light the incursion (I will attach the press release and you can see what you think), that the Kurds were deliberately releasing ISIS prisoners, and this morning told reporters that what was happening in the Middle East had nothing to do with the US, and that the Kurds, who lost 11,000 soldiers fighting for us against ISIS, were "no angels." He also voiced something previously kept secret: we currently have 50 nuclear weapons in Turkey, which is obviously something of enormous concern as we are now at odds.

Then, midday, news broke that Trump had cancelled a briefing for congressional leaders on the Syrian situation, saying that things there were "nicely under control." This was too much for Congress to stomach, and this afternoon, the House overwhelmingly, by a vote of 354 to 60, passed a bipartisan resolution (129 Republicans voted for it) condemning Trump's actions in Syria and asking what his "clear and specific plan" was for combatting ISIS. Trump supporters Senators Lindsay Graham, Mitch McConnell, and Marco Rubio also expressed dismay over the president's actions in Syria.

After the vote, the White House invited congressional leaders to meet with Trump. There, they asked what his plan for Syria was, and the conversation went poorly. Apparently, Trump attacked his former Secretary of Defense James Mattis as weak and claimed that he alone-- Trump-- had won victory over ISIS. He said that Turkey and Syria would fight ISIS, but his advisors admitted there was no sign they were actually going to do it. And Trump refused to engage with the reality that Russia has now swept into Syria, taking positions there that had been ours hours before (and making propaganda videos about it). When Pelosi said he had given Putin the foothold in the Middle East he had always wanted, and then followed it up with "All roads with you lead to Putin," Trump blew up. He said such insulting things to the Speaker of the House-- who is, after all, the primary representative of the American people-- the Democratic leaders walked out. They went straight to waiting cameras, where the men expressed shock at Trump's attack on the House speaker, but Pelosi herself emphasized that the president was taken aback by such a dramatic rebuke by Republicans in Congress (129 of them voted for the resolution). She also noted that Trump is not well.

Love her or hate her, Pelosi is a masterful politician, and she called this exactly right. The Syrian crisis has provided a clear issue around which people turning against Trump can coalesce. It is now clear that there has been growing concern among career diplomats for months that Trump and his people have been using the State Department to spur foreign attacks on Democrats at home. The whistleblower complaint about Trump's July 25 phone call with Ukraine president Zelensky that came to light on September 13 was the first inkling of this, but since then, there has been such a flood of alarming information the whistleblower complaint has been eclipsed. Career state department officials-- Marie Yovanovitch, Fiona Hill, George Kent, and today, Michael McKinley-- have bucked the White House embargo on testimony to add details to the story of a shadow foreign policy run by Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuilani and Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, along with special envoy Kurt Volker, and facilitated by acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, to pressure Ukraine leaders to smear Joe Biden's son Hunter. In May, Mulvaney allegedly put together the "three amigos:" Sondland, Volker, and Energy Secretary Rick Perry to take over Ukraine policy from career diplomats.

With the arrest last week of Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas (fyi, I can't keep all these names straight either) we learned that the story was even deeper: these men were funneling money from Russian oligarchs to GOP politicians, while trying to cement control over Ukraine's gas industry. Another person named in the indictment, David Correia, was arrested today at JFK airport. We have also learned that Rudy Giuliani is, and has been, under federal counterintelligence investigation, suggesting that the FBI thinks he might be actively working for a foreign country.

The story of Syria, and that the domestic story is getting so bad that people are defying Trump, has **** open the wall that has protected the president. People are heading for the exits. Last night, news broke that a federal appeals court has reopened a case charging Trump with violating the Constitution's emoluments clause and profiting illegally from his hotels while in office. Today, we learned that there are major discrepancies between Trump's taxes and bank records for loans, suggesting he might well have committed tax or bank fraud. Then Time Magazine published a piece by David Schulkin, Trump's first Secretary of Veteran's Affairs, presenting his interview for the job as virtually a Saturday Night Live skit, to which he compared it in the piece.

Pelosi is right: Trump is spooked by his collapsing power. In a desperate attempt for good press, Trump today tried to manufacture a win on social media by trying to resolve an emotional international incident before cameras. On August 27, the wife of a US diplomat in the UK, driving on the wrong side of the road, struck and killed a young man coming her way on a motorcycle. Citing diplomatic immunity-- the law that protects diplomats from being prosecuted for crimes in foreign countries-- the woman took refuge from the UK's justice system by returning to America. The man's parents, along with the British government, have appealed for the US government to waive her diplomatic immunity and return her for a trial. The man's parents are in the US to press for her return, and Trump invited them to the White House. Unbeknownst to them, he had the woman who had killed their son waiting in an adjoining room to meet with them in front of cameras. They declined, later saying they had been "ambushed." Rather than looking like a peacemaker, Trump looked like someone trying to use parents suffering from the death of their son for a photo-op.

After a day of disastrous news and the meeting with congressional leaders, Trump tried tonight to look calm, and to spin the walkout as Pelosi's meltdown rather than his. He tweeted out a picture showing Pelosi standing up to him while he was seated at a table surrounded by advisors. But the body language of the men around Trump was startling: they are slumped, staring at their folded hands. It was an astonishing self-own, followed up by worse. To demonstrate that he had, in fact, been hard on Turkish President Erdogan rather than green lighting his attack on the Kurds, Trump released to Fox News personality Trish Regan a letter he allegedly wrote on October 9, the day Turkish troops crossed into Syria and began to slaughter the Kurds. "Let's work out a good deal!" he wrote to Erdogan, and then went on to conclude: "Don't be a tough guy. Don't be a fool!.... I will call you later." The letter was so wildly inappropriate reporters had to check to make sure it was not a parody. But the White House verified it.

For their part, White House spokespeople insist that Trump is calm and in control. Tonight, he resurrected complaints about Hillary Clinton,'s emails and echoed Pelosi's observations about him, tweeting that "Nancy Pelosi needs help fast! There is either something wrong with her “upstairs,” or she just plain doesn’t like our great Country. She had a total meltdown in the White House today. It was very sad to watch. Pray for her, she is a very sick person!"

Let us hope she is right. Congressman Elijah Cummings knew, from the start, how TOTALLY Fascist the Trump demagogue, and his Wrecking Crew, ARE.

Cummings’ remarks this summer were prescient:

Elijah Cummings 🦅✨ 'signed subpoenas from his hospital bed' for Trump impeachment before his death
Source: Independent UK

Elijah Cummings was kept busy to the very end of his life leading an investigation into Donald Trump before passing away at the age of 68 on Wednesday, his aides have said.

The chairman of the House Oversight Committee was signing subpoenas from his hospital bed, one aide told the New York Times.

He also helped lead a Democratic caucus conference call.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described Mr Cummings as a “north star” 🌟 who spoke with “unsurpassed clarity and moral integrity” on the House floor.

Ms Pelosi, who grew up in the city Mr Cummings represented, said he was her “brother in Baltimore” during a press conference on Thursday, adding: “We’ve all lost a friend … I’m devastated by the loss.”

Since Trump is now fully cornered, a position guaranteed to bring out the worse Satanic Brainfuck based despotic behavior from him, I suspect the Pentagon is now, methodically and carefully, gaming how to thwart Trump's plans to go full Dictatorship in the USA. The Trump cornered BEAST will try to go "Roy Cohn" and "double down".

As I have said before, that works with a corrupted judiciary. It guarantees failure, and possibly prison or even death, in geopolitics.

But then, 🦀 Trump never learned any other way than the Roy Cohn Scorched Earth, Unremitingly Cruel, Vengeful, Murderous, "Bellicosity is Best" approach to "problem solving".

So, Trump will fail spectacularly. Good. That will not solve most of the environmental, social and political problems we have in the USA, but it is a good start. 🕯️

Republicans worried by Mulvaney's confirmation 🦀 Trump sought exchange of favors with Ukraine
Source: CNN

😈 Mulvaney confesses to quid pro quo: Get over it

(CNN)A top White House official said on Thursday that President Donald Trump had withheld nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine in order to pressure the country to open an investigation that he thought would politically benefit himself, worrying some Republicans in Congress in the middle of an impeachment inquiry.

Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, told reporters that the Trump administration "held up the money" for Ukraine because the President wanted to investigate "corruption" in Ukraine related to a conspiracy theory involving the whereabouts of the Democratic National Committee's computer server hacked by Russians during the last presidential campaign. When pressed on whether the President sought an exchange of favors, Mulvaney said, "We do that all the time with foreign policy."

It was the first time the White House acknowledged a link between the withheld aid and probes that Trump sought.

Some Republicans were deeply concerned by Mulvaney's comments.

"You don't hold up foreign aid that we had previously appropriated for a political initiative," said 🐘 GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. "Period." 🧐 👍

Republican Rep. Francis Rooney of Florida called Mulvaney's acknowledgment about withholding Ukraine aid "troubling," saying it is "not a good thing" to do that in connection "with threatening foreign leaders."

Rooney would not rule out the prospects of supporting impeaching the President.
"I'm not going to say anything about that until all the facts are in," he said. "I remember too many people saying, 'Oh, this is a witch hunt against Richard Nixon,' and come to find out it wasn't a witch hunt."

Hours after the news conference, Mulvaney released a statement reversing his prior comments, now claiming there was "absolutely no quid pro quo between Ukrainian military aid and any investigation into the 2016 election.".............................

Elijah Cummings death made me really reflect upon the period of time that I came of age as an adult. Many of of us realized that the world of injustice we were protesting and trying to change at the time, was the "Ball of Confusion" that could only inevitably lead to a monster like Trump. The USA saw the looming Republican descent into confederacy and fascism, but got lost in its default rhetoric about law & order/Patriotism/ fake morality/fake "christian" values/abortion tropes. And now we are in the fullly grown belly of the beast of that creation as exemplified in this old Temptations song of that era.

Juxtapose a few lyrics here and there, and you have the Dystopian World of Trump and fascist Republicanism we inhabit today. The difference this time however, is the nation and world is finally awake to its deadly threat to life itself. So I am optimistic that the destruction of Trump and the forces that power Trumpism will truly usher in a golden age envisioned by many people of my era.

Kasich calls for Trump's impeachment 02:39

(CNN) — Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich said President Donald Trump should be impeached, a major switch for a former Republican presidential candidate who had previously defended the President.

Breaking from his party's overall stance, Kasich, who's a CNN contributor, told CNN's Ana Cabrera Friday the "final straw" for him was White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney's Thursday admission that military aid was withheld from Ukraine in order to pressure that country for investigations into Democrats.

"But if you are asking me if I was sitting in the House of Representatives today and you were to ask me how do I feel, do I think impeachment should move forward and should go for a full examination and a trial in the United States Senate, my vote would be yes." Kasich said on CNN's "Newsroom."

The high-profile Republican said the events of Thursday afternoon -- Mulvaney's admission of a quid pro quo and the announcement of the resignation of Energy Secretary Rick Perry chief among them -- caused him to rethink his stance.

Trump officials say aid to Puerto Rico was knowingly stalled after Hurricane Maria

Source: The Hill

Two officials with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) acknowledged during a hearing this week that the agency knowingly stalled sending hurricane relief funding to Puerto Rico after missing a legally required deadline to do so.

HUD’s chief financial officer, Irv Dennis, and David Woll, the department's principal deputy assistant secretary for community planning and development, appeared before a House Appropriations subcommittee for a hearing on Thursday.

The officials said that the agency missed a deadline issued by Congress to start a process to help Puerto Rico receive billions in federal housing funds that Congress had allocated after Hurricane Maria hit the island in 2017.

“All of us at HUD stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Puerto Rico,” Woll said during the hearing. “At HUD we are committed to the recovery of all Americans whose homes and communities were devastated by natural disasters, and we are steadfast in our stewardship of the funding and trust in us by you in your colleagues in Congress.”

Donald Trump just got hit with some really bad news

Bill Palmer | 8:40 pm EDT October 18, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

Donald Trump is currently facing an onslaught of attacks and criticism from General Mattis, Admiral McRaven, John Kasich, Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski, and too many other people to list. This comes even as Gordon Sondland has testified against him, and Rick Perry’s resignation suggests he might do the same. The last thing Trump needs is even more bad news – so naturally he just got hit with even more bad news.

As Donald Trump’s scandals continue to worsen, poll numbers in favor of impeachment continue to rise. We keep seeing similar increases from one major polling outlet after another. But now we’re seeing something new. The way poll numbers usually shift is that some people go from Column A to undecided, even as other people go from undecided to Column B. The new Pew poll is showing a different trend.

It’s not just that some people are going from anti-impeachment to undecided, and that other people are going from undecided to pro-impeachment. As pointed out by Newsweek, the Pew poll reveals that nine percent of Americans have now gone from anti-impeachment all the way to pro-impeachment.

This is a big deal because it demonstrates that the landscape is changing so severely for Donald Trump, even a sizable number of people who opposed his impeachment have now decided they want him gone. This suggests that as the process moves forward and the story gets even uglier for Trump, even more of the current anti-impeachment people will decide it’s time for him to go.
