U.S. Turns to Gulf of Mexico as Potential New Frontier for Offshore Wind
Mike Schuler

June 8, 2021

SNIPPET:

The U.S. Department of the Interior is moving to explore the potential of offshore wind in the Gulf of Mexico, home to the nation’s vast offshore oil and gas industry.

To date, the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has leased approximately 1.7 million acres for offshore wind development and issued 17 commercial leases off the Atlantic seaboard from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras, but so far no such plans have existed for the Gulf of Mexico. Now with the Biden Administration’s goal of 30MW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, the government is starting to look beyond the Atlantic for opportunities.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is now set to publish a Request for Interest (RFI) in the Federal Register this Friday, June 11, to assess interest in potential offshore wind development in the Western and Central Planning Areas of the Gulf of Mexico offshore the states of Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Biden Administration Proposes Offshore Wind Lease Sale for Waters Off New York and New Jersey

Mike Schuler

June 11, 2021

The U.S. Department of the Interior is taking steps to hold an offshore wind lease sale off the coast of New York and New Jersey.

The DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management today proposed the Biden Administration’s first competitive offshore wind lease sale for the New York Bight, a shallow water area between Long Island and the New Jersey. The proposed lease areas is advertised to have over 7 gigawatts of offshore ⚡ wind potential, enough to power more than 2.6 million homes and support the creation of thousands of new jobs.

The proposed sale will offer eight lease areas in the New York Bight that could be auctioned for commercial wind energy development. A Proposed Sale Notice (PSN) in the Federal Register, published today, opens a 60-day public comment period and provides detailed information about potential areas that could be available for leasing, proposed lease provisions and conditions, auction details.

“The New York Bight is a prime example of how regional cooperation, partnerships, and stakeholder feedback can come together to identify areas suitable for offshore wind development,” said BOEM Director Amanda Lefton. “Today’s announcement demonstrates that fighting climate change and creating union jobs can go hand in hand.”

To date, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has held 8 competitive lease sales and issued 17 active commercial offshore wind leases on the Atlantic from Massachusetts to North Carolina.

The proposed lease sale comes as the Biden Administration pursues a goal of 30 gigawatts of installed offshore wind power by 2030. Its announcement follows other recent milestones in the administration’s plans for more offshore wind development, such as approving the first large scale project in federal waters, advancing offshore wind areas off the coast of California, and even beginning to explore the Gulf of Mexico for its potential.

Climate change poses an existential threat — not just to our environment, but to our health, our communities, and our economic well-being.

The Biden-Harris administration recognizes the urgency of this moment, and the development of renewable energy resources is an important piece of addressing this reality,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. “Today’s announcement of new proposed lease stipulations puts a priority on creating and sustaining good-paying union jobs as we build a clean energy economy.”

French Shipping Company Selects Shipyard for Sail-Powered Cargo Ship

By Mike Schuler

SNIPPET:

he LOI with Neopolia Mobility covers the construction of the first vessel, a 136-meter-long sailing cargo ship capacity of 500 cars and 280 containers. Commissioning is planned for the first half of 2024 with construction beginning as early as this summer, subject to obtaining the needed financing.

Earlier this year, tire manufacturer Michelin agreed to ship a portion of its tires using Neoline’s vessels. Under the agreement, tires will be loaded in containers and shipped from Michelin’s facilities in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Saint-Nazaire, France as soon as the Neoline’s first ship enters service.

With 4,200 square meters of sail area and engine assist, Neoline believes the vessels can achieve a speed of at least 11 knots to keep a biweekly service schedule while also achieving verified bunker fuel savings.

The Future of Solid State Wind Energy - No More Blades. Wind power is one of the fastest-growing renewable sources that works well at scale, but it isn't perfect. What if we could scale down wind turbine power to something that could fit on your roof? And be self-contained with smaller moving parts ... or maybe no blades or moving parts at all? Let's look at some future alternatives for harnessing wind power.

NIMBY Rich Beach Community Stupidity

Agelbert NOTE: The article, accidentally on purpose, I suspect, attempts to invert reality by falsely equating action against fossil fuel industry planet polluting mayhem with action by the rich against offshore wind power renewable energy infrastructure. It is disingenuous to claim these rich bastards are just "worried about the view", while "forgetting"   to mention the (SEE: TRUE MOTIVATION for legal action against Renewable Energy Infrastructure) FACT that the rich have a GIANT conflict of interest against renewable energy BECAUSE they ALL OWN a HUGE amount stock in 🦕 fossil fuel 😈 corporations.

Other than that, the article is important reading for people who still don't realize what a danger to human society the greedy rich, who continue to defend the 🦕 fossil fuel based biosphere degrading status quo, are.

New Jersey Amps Up Fight Against 🎩😈🦕 Beachside Towns Opposed to Offshore Wind

SNIPPETS:

“We’re not going to let NIMBYism shut this down,” said state Senator Stephen Sweeney, a sponsor of the legislation and New Jersey’s highest-ranking lawmaker. He added that some 🦕 residents of Ocean City, a hotbed of opposition in the state, told him they could kill offshore wind. “Ocean City doesn’t get to make the decision for the entire state of New Jersey on a policy initiative. 🎩🦕 They just don’t.”

Orsted, the world’s biggest developer of offshore wind power, plans to build the Ocean Wind 1 project between 15 and 27 miles off Atlantic City and connect it to the electrical grid through buried power lines in both Ocean City and Island Beach State Park.

“The majority of the people are against the wind mills," said Ocean City councilman Keith Hartzell. “Everybody thought it would be up to us to decide whether the transmission lines came through Ocean City. " ... ...

Local  residents in the 🎩😈🦖 well-off  Hamptons town of Wainscott, New York, have targeted another Orsted development called South Fork Wind, filing a lawsuit in February against the project and the town board over a high-voltage cable that would land at the town beach and then run underneath town streets to a new substation. And the Block Island Wind Farm off the coast of Rhode Island, developed by General Electric Co. and Alstom SA, also faced opposition because of power cables running through the town of Narragansett.

Wind power for boats has mostly been confined to niche sports and leisure activities these days, but new technologies are bringing a fresh perspective to the role that the wind can play in reducing costs and greenhouse gas emissions in the global freight shipping industry. That industry currently accounts for nearly 3% of all GHG emissions, so freight operators are on a quest to reach net zero by 2050. Here's three of the most promising wind power options that could help them get there.

Chinese manufacturer MingYang Smart Energy has unveiled a 264-meter tall, 16-megawatt capacity offshore wind turbine.

The MySE 16.0-242 becomes the world’s largest hybrid drive wind turbine with a 242-meter diameter rotor, 118-meter long blades, and 4,600 m2 swept area. The model is capable of generating 80,000 MWh of electricity every year, enough to power more than 20,000 households.

“In response to demand for anti-typhoon wind turbines in coastal Guangdong, MingYang systematically develops high-quality products by collaborating with global supply chain partners and integrating cutting-edge technologies from industries such as aerospace, materials, and big data,” said Qiying Zhang, president and CTO of Ming Yang Smart Energy. “Over the years, we have gained over 10GW cumulative track record and iteration experience with Hybrid-Drive technology. These enable us to have a rapid learning curve in product R&D and position us well to become an offshore wind leader.”

The MySE 16.0-242 produces 45% more energy than the company’s previous turbine model and can eliminate more than 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over the course of its 25-year lifespan when compared to coal-fired power generation.

MySE 16.0-242 is scheduled for commercial production in the first half of 2024.

Wooden wind turbines. Are they really a sustainable alternative? 🤔

Just Have a Think 333K subscribers

Wooden windmills are surely a relic from our pre industrial history aren't they? Well, that was certainly true until recently. Now though, a Swedish company has harnessed the inherent qualities of timber to produce a turbine tower that is not only lighter than its steel equivalent, but also stronger and more environmentally friendly 🌼 too 🌞. Could this be the least likely technological revolution so far?
