Wind power surpassed coal as the second largest power source in Texas A 155 megawatt wind farm that came online this month brought the state’s total wind capacity to 20,000 megawatts, just over coal’s 19,800 megawatts. Additional planned coal plant closures will further increase wind power’s share over coal. Wind now generates 15 percent of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas’ power, compared to 2 percent 10 years ago. By 2019 wind power generation -- which is different than capacity -- is expected to overtake coal.
