Renewable tidal power hit a significant milestone, an indication of how the industry is maturing.

A floating tidal stream turbine off the coast of Orkney, Scotland - the most powerful of its kind in the world - produced more power in a year than Scotland’s entire wave and tidal sector produced in the 12 years prior.

The unit is more than 60 meters (200 feet) long and weighs more than 500 metric tons.

In its first year of operation, the turbine generated three gigawatts of power, enough to meet the annual energy demand of around 830 homes. The head of the company that owns the turbine said its performance level was approaching that of other already widely deployed renewable technologies.
