Indian State Of Andhra Pradesh To Buy 7 Gigawatts Of Solar Power 🌞

The Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has agreed to enter perhaps the largest solar power purchase agreement with the Solar Corporation of India (SECI).

The power distribution utilities of Andhra Pradesh have secured approval from the state regulator to procure 7 gigawatts of solar power from projects auctioned by SECI. Power will be supplied in tranches between September 2024 and September 2026.

Distribution utilities will supply this power to over 1.8 million farmers for nine hours a day free of cost. Currently, these utilities supply power to farmers at Rs 4.36 ($0.056) per kilowatt-hour. The utilities had earlier planned to procure 10 gigawatts of solar power through auctions. These projects were supposed to be set up a solar power park within the state.

The state government had issued a 10 GW tender in January 2021 and had received bids for 6.4 gigawatts of capacity from a number of leading project developers. However, the tender ran into legal trouble and was eventually quashed.

By procuring power through SECI, Andhra Pradesh is expected to save Rs 2.3 billion ($304 million) in solar park and transmission infrastructure development costs. SECI will reportedly supply power from the 12 gigawatts of solar power capacity it allocated to Adani Green Energy and Azure Power under the manufacturing-linked power generation tender. Apart from power generation capacity, Adani Green Energy and Azure Power are required to manufacture 2 gigawatts and 1 gigawatt of solar modules.

Spherical Solar Cells - doubling the power output of flat PV panels!

Just Have a Think 360K subscribers

Solar panels are highly sensitive to what you might call 'sub-optimal' conditions...wrong angle of the sun, scattered sunlight, dust & sand, too much heat - all these things diminish the panels ability to generate power. But now a research team reckon they've overcome all those problems by creating a spherical version of the common solar PV panel. So, is this a practical proposition for the real world?

Agelbert COMMENT: All good. There is no doubt whatsoever that the eye shape of the fly is more efficient at capturing light than a relatively flat eye shape, which, along with its wings, enables it to survive long enough to propagate its species. However, natural selection being a subtractive process, it is irrational to think that said subtractive process could randomly result in a more efficient eye shape. The fly's eye shape is clearly an integral part of the fly's overall design. In fact, no fly fossils (or flies in million year amber) have been found that don't have the round eye shape (i.e. NO "transitional" fossils). Darwin thought there was no Designer. The evidence argues otherwIse.

If you think Evolution is the best explanation for increasing complexity and efficiency in living creatures, I suggest you take a very close look at the owl skull, eye shape, eye socket and neck vertebra. All these separate biological anatomical parts function as a unit. They simply would not make sense in the absence of a single one of the others. With eyes that are fixed in the head, the head HAD to be able to turn so MANY degrees. The vertebra HAD to be designed to allow normal blood flow during extreme head rotation or there would be no advantage to the fixed binocular eyes and 270 neck rotation. The absence of any one of these "mutations" would have dangerously decreased the owl's predatory efficiency if it had not "evolved" simultaneously, which is statistically impossible in the time frame Owl species had to "evolve".

As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. -- Proverbs 25:12

Solar farms can double as thriving pollinator habitats. Fresh Energy

Solar Farms Could Boost Bumblebee Populations, Study Says

A new study finds that installing solar farms could become a two birds , one stone situation, as these areas can also double as thriving pollinator habitats if land owners allow meadows to grow around the solar panels.

The study, from researchers at Lancaster University in the UK that will be presented today at an Ecology Across Borders conference, shows that installing solar farms could be greatly beneficial to nature.

“Our findings provide the first quantitative evidence that solar parks could be used as a conservation tool to support and boost pollinator populations. If they are managed in a way that provides resources, solar parks could become [a] valuable bumble bee habitat,” said Hollie Blaydes, associate lecturer and doctorate student at the university. “In the UK, pollinator habitat has been established on some solar parks, but there is currently little understanding of the effectiveness of these interventions. Our findings provide solar park owners and managers with evidence to suggest that providing floral and nesting resources for bumble bees could be effective.

While there’s no doubt that solar farms are helpful in generating clean energy, some critics say that these projects require extensive amounts of land that should instead be left untouched. Blaydes notes that solar parks disturb only about 5% of the ground, and these areas can also create new habitats for vulnerable pollinators, whose numbers are dwindling.

The researchers note that there are benefits for land owners who want to install solar parks, too. These lands could become meadows, rather than turf, cutting down land management costs for maintaining grass and other interventions. Meadows could also support four times more bumblebees compared to land covered in turf grass.

Another interesting point of the study is that these solar farms could further support bee density up to 1 kilometer outside of the solar farms, and the pollinators could then tend to nearby agricultural crops as well.

The UK already has about 14,000 hectares of solar farms, which have gained both   praise and :( grievances . But Lancaster University researchers continue to dispel concerns.

Another 2021 university study, in collaboration with Ludong University in China and University of California Davis in the U.S., found that solar farms produce “cool islands,” reducing temperatures by about 2.3°C (36.14°F) 100 meters around the solar farm. Cooling effects on a lesser scale extend up to 700 meters around the solar farm.

Alona Armstrong, senior lecturer of energy and environmental sciences at Lancaster University and co-author of the cool islands study, said, “This heightens the importance of understanding the implications of renewable energy technologies on the hosting landscape — we need to ensure that the energy transition does not cause undue damage to ecological systems and ideally has net positive consequences on the places where we build them.”

⚡🌞 Community solar  policy gets green light in many states 👉 2022 Trends in Solar

By Kelsey Misbrener | January 3, 2022

SNIPPET:

In 2021 alone, four states in the Midwest and Rust Belt introduced community solar-enabling legislation, while other states from coast to coast passed bills or expansions of existing programs.

֍ Ohio: HB 450 under consideration, would open community solar market.
֍ Wisconsin: LRB 1902 under consideration, would open community solar market.
֍ Michigan: HB 4715-16 under consideration, would open community solar market.
֍ Pennsylvania: SB 472 under consideration, would open community solar market.
֍ New Mexico: SB 84 signed into law, opened the state’s community solar market.
֍ New Jersey: The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities is converting its Community Solar Energy Pilot Program into a permanent program by February 2022.
֍ Maryland: The Maryland Public Service Commission voted to expand the capacity of the state’s community solar program as well as improve access for low- and moderate-income (LMI) customer participation.
֍ Delaware: SB 2 updated the existing community solar statute to require that each community solar project serves at least 15% LMI customers.

States are enacting policy provisions to guarantee a certain amount of community solar subscriptions are dedicated to LMI communities that could most benefit from lower electric bills and clean energy. Last year, Vote Solar  released a guide to increasing community solar access and adoption in low-income communities, including instituting automatic enrollment in community solar programs through qualification for another government program, such as the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Solar PV efficiency - new breakthrough!

Just Have a Think 375K subscribers

Solar photovoltaic panels are currently limited to a maximum efficiency of about 30%, and in practice only actually achieve about 20% to 23% efficiency. Now a team in Cambridge has developed a film that can amplify the number of photons that the panel can use, with a potential increase in efficiency to as much as 35%. So how do they do that?

FIRST SOLAR CANOPY IN OSSINING, NY FEATURES QUADPOD FROM QUEST RENEWABLES

SNIPPET:

At their Ossining, NY campus, Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers (Maryknoll) and Quest Renewables’ customer, Ecogy Energy (Ecogy), held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of their innovative and community-focused solar canopy system on September 14, 2021. The 2,184-panel canopy system, consisting of 12 QuadPod solar canopies spanning two parking lots, offsets part of Maryknoll’s energy consumption with renewable energy and provides clean energy access and electricity bill discounts to local community members.

The canopy solar project provides Maryknoll with covered parking, downward-facing LED parking lot lighting to increase nighttime security and a visible green initiative— all while extending 10% electricity bill discounts to Maryknoll and local community members through community solar. Further, this system employs the best land-use practices as it is built atop already existing infrastructure and does not increase any impermeable surfaces. Additionally, this community solar project provides a unique window into clean energy for those who are not able to finance their own system or simply do not have the space to install it— thereby ensuring that access to clean energy is equitable and inclusive of all.
