120 Megawatt Floating Solar Project Completed In China

April 18th, 2020 by Steve Hanley

Phase 2 of a 320 megawatt floating solar project in China’s Zhejiang province has been completed, according to a report by PV Magazine. The 120 megawatts of new capacity complements the 200 megawatt (MW) portion of the installation that was completed in 2017. The panels float on the surface of the Changhe and Zhouxiang reservoirs in Cixi. The developer of the project is Hangzhou Fengling Electricity Science Technology.

Inverters are a critical part of any solar power plant, but providing inverters for floating solar installations presents unique challenges. Chinese inverter maker Shenzhen Kstar Science and Technology supplied its GSL2500C-MV and GSL1250 central inverters for this second phase.

In an interview with PV Magazine, Tammy Tang, Kstar marketing manager, said, “The 320 MW plant has now an expected annual generation of 352 million KWH. The annual revenue from the generated electricity for the owner of the plant is about $45 million, while the annual fishery income can reach nearly $5 million.” Phase 2 cost a total of $1o0 million.

She added that the inverters supplied are designed specifically to withstand a wet environment with particular attention paid go sealing out moisture and dust. Electricity from the second phase will sell for 12 cents per kilowatt-hour.

With respect to the aquaculture part of the installation, Tang said, “The photovoltaic panels are set up above the water surface of the reservoir and the water area below the photovoltaic panel can be used for fish cultivation. Fishermen can fish and row boats there.”

Here’s 200MW solar-water power plant, the first phase of a 320 MW project. ☀💪The PV central inverters were all provided by KSTAR in Jan,2017. The annual electricity generation is expected to be 220 million KWH.

The panels help reduce water surface evaporation and save water resources while creating a better hatching environment for fish, which helps to increase aquatic production. “The PV power plant has a high power generation efficiency and low operations and maintenance costs, as well as a minimal impact on the maritime life,” Tang said.

These 10 States Are Leading Solar Energy Installation in 2021

SNIPPET:

Solar energy has been among the fastest-growing sources of power generation in the U.S. in recent years, catapulting from 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of generation in 2010 to over 90.1 billion kWh in 2020. While that's still just a small slice of the overall energy mix (2% of all U.S. electricity in 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration), the rate of growth is accelerating. The EIA forecasts that by 2022, solar capacity installations will outpace wind capacity installations for the first time on record after wind turbines had a huge head start.

The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing economic downturn of 2020 led to equipment shortages and other hardships for the solar industry. However, forecasts show the industry is primed for a resurgence in 2021 and beyond. In the first quarter of 2021 alone, solar installations are ramping up at a record pace and experienced a 46% year-over-year increase compared with the first quarter of 2020.

As 2021 continues to look like a prime year for solar power in the United States, which states are leading the charge? We can look to the recently released U.S. Solar Market Insight Report® from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) for some answers. ... ...

Here are the current leaders for solar power in the U.S:

Floating 🌞 Solar Plus 🌊 Wave Energy Smackdown For Fossil Fuels

A sea monster of troubles is coming for fossil energy stakeholders, in the form of offshore floating solar panels with wind turbines and wave energy, too.

SNIPPETS:

Everybody is talking about a new EU clean power project that pairs floating solar with offshore wind turbines, but they’re missing half the story. Wave energy is also part of the project. The wave part is not getting much attention, probably because wave-to-electricity conversion has fallen behind wind and solar in the renewable energy race. Nevertheless, if all goes according to plan, the waters of the EU will be peppered with wave conversion devices as well as floating solar panels. ... ...

There Had To Be A Green Hydrogen Angle In There Somewhere…

CLEAN POWER2025 Community Solar Target To  Power 5 Million Homes In USA

2025 Milestone Will Play a Key Role in Achieving Justice40 Goals and Create $1 Billion in Energy Savings 💰🌞
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced a new National Community Solar Partnership (NCSP) target: to enable community solar systems to power the equivalent of five million households by 2025 and create $1 billion in energy bill savings. Reaching these milestones will help achieve the Biden-Harris Administration’s goals of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2035 and ensure that all Americans can reap the benefits of renewable energy while building community wealth and resiliency.

“Community solar is one of the most powerful tools we have to provide affordable solar energy to all American households, regardless of whether they own a home or have a roof suitable for solar panels,” said Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm. “Achieving these ambitious targets will lead to meaningful energy cost savings, create jobs in these communities, and make our clean energy transition more equitable.”

There is enough solar installed to power 19 million households across the United States. Despite this unprecedented deployment, many Americans still lack access to affordable solar electricity, including many renters, homeowners who lack affordable financing options, and those without suitable roof conditions. Community solar is a form of energy generation where members subscribe to a portion of a solar array, usually located near their community. As the solar array produces energy, subscribers receive a portion of the revenue from the energy produced, typically as savings on their monthly electric bill — a critical factor for low-income and disadvantaged communities whose energy burden is three times higher than for non-low-income households.

There is enough community solar installed in the U.S. today to power 600,000 households — achieving DOE’s new NSCP target would mean an increase of more than 700% in the next four years. The recently released Solar Futures Study report from DOE and National Renewable Energy Laboratory shows how solar can play a major role in a decarbonized grid.

The NCSP is a DOE initiative led by the Solar Energy Technologies Office, in collaboration with the NREL and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The partnership includes a coalition of community solar stakeholders, such as State, local and Tribal governments, solar developers, and community-based organizations, working to expand access to affordable community solar to every American household. Partners leverage peer networks as well as technical assistance funding and resources to overcome the persistent barriers to expanding community solar access with a focus on those in underserved communities. As of September 2021, NCSP had over 650 members from over 440 partner organizations.

The Sharing the Sun report released by NREL in collaboration with NCSP shows that community solar can lead to substantial bill savings — from 5 to 25%. Achieving $1 billion in cost savings would mean that, on average, community solar projects would provide a 20% bill savings. This target, along with other potential solutions for equitable community solar deployment, was informed by NCSP stakeholders in a recent request for information.

To achieve these new targets, DOE is offering free, on-demand technical assistance to NCSP partnership members. Technical assistance provides personalized support to organizations deploying community solar to help them accelerate implementation, improve the performance of their program or project, and build capacity for future community solar development. NCSP has already distributed $1 million for technical assistance and hopes to provide $2 million in the next year.

Learn more about NCSP and join the partnership.

Dear Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm:
Please do not forget the numerous manufactured home parks in the USA. Every single one of those parks has PLENTY of land available to put solar panels up for the manufactured homes there. That certainly constitutes a community of low income Americans with little or no access to affordable Renewable Energy 😟 up until now. We should be as high on your National Community Solar Partnership priority as apartment dwellers and other low income home owners.

There are 159,035 mobile home parks across the United States.

Yes, some parks have the homes packed like sardines, but even those, due to the lack of the trees, can be covered with solar panels to harvest plenty of energy.

Most manufactured home parks have at least an acre of cleared land (e.g. Westbury Park in Colchester, Vermont). Even with all the tree cover here in Westbury Park, which I certainly don't want to harm or in any way reduce, there is enough open land by the access roads to provide enough 🌞 community solar for far more than the 250 homes within.

BLM considers big solar expansion in Nev.’s Mojave Desert

SNIPPET:

The Bureau of Land Management is evaluating three large-scale solar projects that could turn the southern Nevada desert into a major green energy hub.

BLM, in three separate notices filed today and yesterday on the Federal Register, announced the withdrawal of nearly 16,000 acres of federal lands southeast of Pahrump, Nev., from new mining claims for two years while it evaluates three large-scale solar power proposals that would power hundreds of thousands of homes.

The largest is the 🌞 Copper Rays Solar Project, proposed by First Solar, that would have the capacity to produce 700 megawatts of electricity, with a 700 MW capacity battery energy storage system, according to federal documents and associated filings with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada. BLM is withdrawing about 5,518 acres from mining claims while it evaluates the project.
