Spherical Solar Cells - doubling the power output of flat PV panels!

Just Have a Think 360K subscribers

Solar panels are highly sensitive to what you might call 'sub-optimal' conditions...wrong angle of the sun, scattered sunlight, dust & sand, too much heat - all these things diminish the panels ability to generate power. But now a research team reckon they've overcome all those problems by creating a spherical version of the common solar PV panel. So, is this a practical proposition for the real world?

Agelbert COMMENT: All good. There is no doubt whatsoever that the eye shape of the fly is more efficient at capturing light than a relatively flat eye shape, which, along with its wings, enables it to survive long enough to propagate its species. However, natural selection being a subtractive process, it is irrational to think that said subtractive process could randomly result in a more efficient eye shape. The fly's eye shape is clearly an integral part of the fly's overall design. In fact, no fly fossils (or flies in million year amber) have been found that don't have the round eye shape (i.e. NO "transitional" fossils). Darwin thought there was no Designer. The evidence argues otherwIse.

If you think Evolution is the best explanation for increasing complexity and efficiency in living creatures, I suggest you take a very close look at the owl skull, eye shape, eye socket and neck vertebra. All these separate biological anatomical parts function as a unit. They simply would not make sense in the absence of a single one of the others. With eyes that are fixed in the head, the head HAD to be able to turn so MANY degrees. The vertebra HAD to be designed to allow normal blood flow during extreme head rotation or there would be no advantage to the fixed binocular eyes and 270 neck rotation. The absence of any one of these "mutations" would have dangerously decreased the owl's predatory efficiency if it had not "evolved" simultaneously, which is statistically impossible in the time frame Owl species had to "evolve".
