Why Is It Only Fossil Fueled Pundits
Criticize Electric Cars?

There seems to be no shortage of deceptive attacks on electric vehicles, whether from the GOP’s opposition research arm or the Koch brothers themselves. The latest attempt to malign EVs is a report released Monday, which claims increased adoption of EVs will actually increase air pollution. Multiple reports in the past have come to the opposite conclusion--so what makes this one different?

For starters, the “Short Circuit” report was published by the Koch (and Mercer , and Big Tobacco ) and Exxon-funded Manhattan institute, and authored by Jonathan Lesser  , an energy industry consultant with a history 😈 of doing utility and industry bidding and a long track record of anti-climate action writing. With these credentials, it’s not exactly surprising that the report advocates against EV subsidies.

What is surprising is that Politico gave Lesser space to promote the report--without any disclosure of his energy industry 🦖 clients or the Manhattan Institute’s fossil fuel funding. Instead, Lesser’s consultancy is described as “an economic and regulatory consulting firm 😇”   in his Politico byline. This sounds a lot more innocent than the blurb on his LinkedIn profile, which discloses that he provides “services to clients in he [sic] energy industry.”

Lesser’s 👹 full CV provides a little more detail on those energy industry clients 🐉🦕 🦖, which include Shell, Exelon, various state-based gas and utility companies, and the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, an anti-wind farm group with a Koch brother as its chairman.

As for the report itself, the topline findings are that people buying electric cars instead of new gas powered autos will actually increase particulate matter , sulfur and nitrous oxide pollution (the American Lung Association says otherwise), that EVs will only reduce CO2 emissions a little (not true), and that subsidies are unfair because only rich people can afford EVs.

Please forgive us, then, for not wasting our time and yours by digging into the report to find just where and how Lesser has cooked the books to produce the counterintuitive click-bait headline that EV subsidies are bad. And it beggars belief that anyone would actually believe that the Manhattan Institute 👹, funded by conservative billionaires 🦀💵 🎩, actually cares about economic inequality, given that it 😈 has argued that “there is little evidence we should” even try to reduce economic inequality.

To sum up, this report is written by a man whose career is built on fossil fuel consulting, published by a group built with fossil fuel money, arguing cars that don’t use fossil fuels are bad. For some reason, Politico only thought that third part was relevant for its readers.

But would you trust the findings of that report Lesser more than all the others showing the opposite?

The Fossil Fuelers 🦖 DID THE Clean Energy  Inventions suppressing, Climate Trashing, human health depleting CRIME,   but since they have ALWAYS BEEN liars and conscience free crooks 🦀, they are trying to AVOID   DOING THE TIME or     PAYING THE FINE!     Don't let them get away with it! Pass it on!

DAF Trucks Partners With VDL Groep On A Fully Electric Class 8 Truck

May 17th, 2018 by Kyle Field

The competition in electric trucks is quickly heating up as the flood of products developed in response to Tesla’s Semi reveal last year continue to be unveiled. This time, DAF Trucks has revealed its new CF Electric truck that it developed in partnership with VDL Groep.

The beautifully normal truck comes with a 100 kilometer range with fast charging that makes it a great option for short haul routes that require fast turnarounds. To that effect, it has been equipped with high power charging capability that allows it to quick charge in just 30 minutes in order to recharge while being loaded or unloaded. A full charge of its 170kWh battery pack takes a bit longer at 1.5 hours, which is still extremely rapid, considering how massive the battery is.

Tasked with propelling the truck down the road is a 210 kW electric motor which runs whisper quiet. The fast charging and silent operation make DAF’s new CF an attractive alternative for operations that need to run 24/7 without the hassle of noisy diesel engines or the emissions they generate.

The first round of CF Electric trucks will be delivered to key customers this year 💫in a 4×2 tractor configuration developed for up to 40 ton distribution applications within urban areas in which single or double axle semi-trailers are the standard.

Tesla: Model 3 Brake Updates, Rocky Mountain Hypermiling, Shanghai Sales Surge

From Tesla Model 3 brake fixes to extreme Tesla Model 3 hypermiling to smashed Tesla sales surge in Shanghai, here’s your Tesla news roundup for the day.

Sharpening the Braking Software

Shortly after Consumer Reports identified an issue with the emergency braking performance of the Model 3, Tesla began sending out over-the-air updates. Elon Musk tweeted on May 26, “Should improve braking distance by ~20 ft for repeated heavy braking events.” In its original testing, Consumer Reports found the Model 3 required as much as 152 feet to stop from 60 mph. Its average for luxury compact cars is 131 feet. If Elon’s tweet is accurate, the braking performance of the Model 3 after the update should be right in line with that average.

Consumer Reports has agreed to retest the car after the company has finished updating all the cars currently on the road. According to Fortune, the braking issue involves the way in which the electric drive motor regenerates electricity when the brakes are applied.

Consumer Reports reported it was unable to recommend the car to consumers because of the braking issue and for other reasons, like excessive wind noise on the highway and an uncomfortable rear seat. It also found the placement of all the controls of the car in the center-mounted touchscreen inconvenient. It remains to be seen whether it will recommend the car even if the brake update solves the emergency braking issue.

In a week in which Musk has adopted an uncharacteristically combative attitude toward journalists, he went out of his way to praise Consumer Reports. “Thanks @ConsumerReports for excellent critical feedback!”

Think what Consumer Reports has to say isn’t important to Tesla? Think again.

Hypermiling Heaven

While most Americans were busy pounding down hot dogs to honor veterans on Memorial Day weekend, Sean Mitchell, president of the Denver Tesla Club, and Erik Strait, a Tesla owner and YouTube entrepreneur, spent 32 hours driving around in a circle at speeds between 20 and 35 miles an hour. When their car finally stopped running, it had covered 606.2 miles, which may be a new world record if it is certified by the folks at Guinness.

What does one have to do to become a hypermiling champion? Sit in a car for 32 hours with the windows up and the air conditioner off so the temperature inside the car soars to more than 108°F, then have friends drive alongside to pass you food using a net on a pole. If you want to share in the stultifying boredom these two guys endured, you can feast your eyes on the more than 8 hour long video of their adventure that was uploaded to YouTube. Or you could just load one of those videos of a fire burning in a fireplace that go on interminably and watch it until your eyes fall out of your head.

Oh, one other joy that goes along with such stunts? When it’s over, you can have your car towed because it no longer charges properly.  :D

Shanghai Tesla Store Sells Out

After China’s Customs Tariff Commission announced that import duties on electric cars will be reduced to 15% starting July 1, Tesla went ahead and instructed its stores in China to reduce prices immediately. As a result, the Tesla store in Shanghai sold all 10 Model X SUVs it had in stock in just one day. InsideEVs picked up on a story in Yicai Global about the sales surge.

A sales representative at the Shanghai store told the local press, “The cars available were all imported from the States in April and May this year. After selling all of them, we’ll replenish stock when the new tariffs come in. We were losing out on profit with the lowered price as the cars were imported at the old tariff rate — the Model S 75D was CNY70,000 (USD11,000) cheaper.”

The new prices will apply to all cars imported into China going forward but not to existing orders. Prior to July 1, all  Tesla automobiles are subject to a 25% import duty, so Tesla is effectively subsidizing sales for the next 5 weeks. It is unlikely people with pending orders will be very pleased about such corporate largess unless Tesla decides to compensate them in some way.

BYD Stands Strong In Response To LA Times 🦖 Criticism — #Pravduh #RealityCheck

May 29th, 2018 by Kyle Field

SNIPPET:

Quote
BYD President Stella Li reiterated this sentiment in an email to employees in response to the LA Times article, where she called for them to strengthen their resolve in a fight against the dying fossil fuel industry:

“It is also no surprise to me that critics question our ability to deliver on our mission to change the world by creating a complete clean-energy ecosystem that reduces the world’s reliance on petroleum. We are unequivocally the leader of a movement that will reverse centuries of exploitation of our planet.

The entrenched fossil fuel industry 🐉🦕🦖 leading that exploitation will stop at nothing in their efforts to slow down our progress.”

A Bright Future 💫

Ultimately, the near-term critics cannot stop the inevitable tide of renewables and zero-emission transportation solutions. Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates that 84% of all new buses sold in 2030 will be electric. Silencing this generation of critics will inevitably give way to another and another, but the transition is occurring. …

Over at BYD, they will stay the course, as they have for years, from their early beginnings as a battery company to their position today as a global EV leader. BYD is accustomed to change and marketplace disruption, having moved from its beginnings in  batteries into the general automotive sector and later also solar to fulfill its objective of becoming a new energy company.

“And across the nation, our work moves forward. Yesterday, we signed a contract with the University of Georgia for 21 of our buses. Today, the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) will receive their first of three buses.

“It is undeniable that electrification is the cornerstone of our future. We’re glad you are here with us working to save our planet for future generations.”

Tesla Over-The-Air Update Fixes Model 3 Braking Issues, Consumer Reports Fires Back With Improved Rating ✨

May 30th, 2018 by Kyle Field

Tesla Model 3

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter approximately an hour ago that the braking issues identified by Consumer Reports have been addressed by an over-the-air software update. His post shows that he has toned down his responses to the trusted firm, which Tesla butted heads with back in October.

The about-face by Consumer Reports happened in what must be a record, taking just 7 days from a Consumer Reports article detailing such a significant issue to having it resolved by the manufacturer. As we reported earlier, Consumer Reports had issues with the Model 3’s braking capability — it took significantly longer to brake than expected for such a car.

The rapid turnaround speaks to the impressive responsiveness by Tesla when faced with what it deems are real issues, and also to the power of its over-the-air software update capability, which can roll out fixes faster, easier, and more cheaply than automakers have ever done.

Somewhat surprisingly, legacy automobiles have never enjoyed the luxury of over-the-air updates, with even a small firmware flash or navigation update requiring a visit to a local service center and the inevitable service bills that follow. Tesla, on the other hand, just has to kick out a software update and push it out to all affected vehicles, much like a cellphone manufacturer would do.

Elon added more color to the update in a second tweet, noting that the braking and user interface (UI) updates were for all Model 3’s, not just the new ones it was building moving forward. He also noted two hardware updates that Tesla had identified to address other concerns raised by Consumer Reports — a quieter windshield and better suspension that would improve the ride quality. It appears that he implied any Model 3 owner could come in for the upgrades and have them done on the house, but he didn’t explicitly say that and he actually discouraged owners from bothering with these issues if they aren’t “really bothered by them.”

The exchange on Twitter shows just how responsive Tesla can be, but really starts to make one wonder about Elon’s capacity and if Twitter is the most effective use of his time. Maybe a Tesla Twitter team with a more structured approach to handling issues, taking feedback, and responding to criticism would result in a better end product and let Elon get back to what is surely a lengthy list of more pressing issues? Oh well — he’s the one changing the world, who am I to offer solutions?

For sure, Elon will just keep doing what he does.  To close out the tweets on such updates (for now, at least), he announced yet another innovative feature that would allow drivers to accelerate the speed at which Tesla’s vehicles improve. He tweeted that drivers could create “bug reports” for Tesla’s vehicles much like they would do for a computer or smartphone app and just using voice commands.

Tesla Model 3 Saves Family In Horrific Read-End Collision

May 31st, 2018 by Steve Hanley

A Seattle family was driving their Tesla Model 3 at 65 mph in the HOV lane on Interstate 90 on May 30 when a Camaro SS slammed into the rear of their car, sending it spinning across four lanes of traffic. It collided with the barrier on the right hand margin of the highway before slewing back across the road and slamming head on into the Jersey barrier. Here’s how the driver, whose screen name on the Tesla Motors Club is anatari, described what happened in a forum post:

Was cruising along the i-90 tunnel in Seattle, WA on mercer island with my wife and 2 kids, when I hear some vehicles approach at high speed from behind. Then suddenly I hear a screeching sound from a car braking hard, and then a car slams into my rear end – hard. I was going 65, so that vehicle must have been going significantly faster. From there I lose control of the car, and the car spins out of control, hitting the freeway divider wall all the way on the other side of the freeway 4 lanes across, and then bouncing back all the way back to the other side of the freeway and hitting that wall before coming to a stop.

Thankfully the Model 3 performed miraculously, crumple zones compressed, airbags deployed, no fire after the accident, and no one in my family seems to be seriously injured.

Still processing what just happened and getting all the facts from the police (there may be a criminal case against the person who hit me), but any tips and things to watch out for as I go through the insurance process?

Another driver, Paul Chang, added that he witnessed the accident, which was caused by the driver of the Camaro SS racing a BMW M3. The Camaro was disabled and came to a stop. The white M3 took off, Chang says. Apparently, the local police are considering criminal charges for the driver of the Camaro — and the BMW pilot, if they can identify him. Good. Both of these bozos deserve serious jail time.

The Model 3 did a superlative job of protecting the people inside. Elon Musk likes to brag about how safe the cars his company builds are and it looks like he has good reason to be proud. (Note: We also have an EV safety report coming soon that goes into detail about the safety of electric vehicles — good and bad.)

ABB to Equip High-Spec Service Operations Vessel for World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm

May 30, 2018 by gCaptain

Credit: ABB

ABB technology allowing integration of batteries receives major vote of confidence as Louis Dreyfus Armateurs orders second wind farm service vessel featuring a wide scope of ABB’s solutions.

Press Release (ABB) Maritime transportation group Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) will add a second 83 meter windfarm service operation vessel (SOV) to its fleet, featuring an extensive range of ABB’s technology, with the award-winning power distribution system Onboard DC GridTM at its core. The vessel will support operations at Hornsea Project Two off the UK coast, which, upon completion in 2022, will become the world’s biggest wind farm capable of powering over 1.3 million homes.

ABB’s Onboard DC GridTM enables simple, flexible and functional integration of energy sources, such as batteries and fuel cells, and empowers the efficiencies associated with variable speed generator operation.

In addition to Onboard DC GridTM, the ABB scope of supply includes tunnel thrusters, generators, transformers, batteries, ABB Ability™ Marine Advisory System – OCTOPUS and ABB’s Remote Diagnostics Services. ABB will also provide its Power and Energy Management System (PEMS), which allows battery power to act as backup for running generators, again cutting the need to run spare capacity, and reducing maintenance and fuel consumption in the long-term.

“LDA is positioning itself at the forefront of the wind farm service sector in vessel performance and efficiency,” says Hervé Lapierre, Head of Newbuilding Department at LDA. “Wind farm service requirements are still evolving, meaning that SOVs built for this market, in addition to being cost-effective, need to also be innovative and flexible.”

Onboard DC GridTM solution enables variable speed technology to dynamically optimize system energy use in line with the load situation, which results in a 20% cut in fuel consumption. Power from the dual batteries on board will be introduced to maximize efficiency, and the energy stored can come from a variety of sources, including renewables. DC distribution also provides a unique platform for digital solutions, so that data from equipment sensors can be transmitted between systems instantaneously, and bridge or shore-based systems can monitor and optimize vessel performance.

“The second order from LDA feels like a validation of the performance, cost efficiency and safety that ABB delivers through its ‘Electric. Digital Connected’ approach,” – says Juha Koskela, Managing Director, ABB Marine & Ports. “We are proud to deliver the technology that enables the use of stored energy for a vessel supporting the renewables industry.”

The vessel, designed by Salt Ship Design, will be built at Turkey’s CEMRE Shipyard. Like its predecessor, ordered in 2017, the second LDA vessel will be on contract with Ørsted A/S, the largest energy company in Denmark.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a pioneering technology leader in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB today is writing the future of industrial digitalization with two clear value propositions: bringing electricity from any power plant to any plug and automating industries from natural resources to finished products. As title partner of Formula E, the fully electric international FIA motorsport class, ABB is pushing the boundaries of e-mobility to contribute to a sustainable future. 🔊 StreetScooter ✨ Opens 2nd Factory To Build Electric ⚡ Trucks

May 31st, 2018 by Steve Hanley

It started with a simple idea. Deutsche Post, one of the largest global delivery companies, wanted a fleet of electric trucks to lower its carbon foot print. It approached several traditional manufacturers, including Volkswagen, but was rebuffed. So the Deutsche Post board decided to design and build their own using a new subsidiary known as StreetScooter. A factory to build the electric trucks was set up in Aachen, Germany.

streetscooter factory Duren

To date, it has produced 6,000 vehicles, all of which are being used by Deutsche Post as part of its delivery fleet, mostly in urban areas. But a funny thing happened along the way. Other companies heard about the electric vans and asked if they could buy some. The demand was so strong, the company has now opened a second factory in Düren. Like the first factory, the new facility will have an annual capacity of 10,000 vehicles.

According to a company press release, Armin Laschet, the Minister President of  the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, told an audience during the opening ceremonies for the new factory, “The StreetScooter is already an unprecedented success story. The fact that Deutsche Post deploys more than 6,000 StreetScooters throughout Germany clearly demonstrates that electro-mobility is, in several areas, already a perfectly viable, everyday transport solution. It is success stories such as these that can make North Rhine-Westphalia a key driver of growth in electro-mobility. StreetScooter in Düren will create up to 250 new jobs here in the Rhine region. This is structural change in action, and it opens up new opportunities for the people of the region.”

Jürgen Gerdes, a member of Deutsche Post’s board of directors added, “E-mobility is on the move. We can see it in growing public interest and increasing third party customer demand for our StreetScooters. The number of StreetScooters used in the business world, in municipalities, and at Deutsche Post is also on the rise in Germany and abroad, and the reason is the same in both arenas — pollution and more pollution in major cities everywhere. That’s why we’re delighted to be able to start production in Düren.”

StreetScooter is building a variety of electric trucks to meet the needs of various customers. Vans come in small, medium, and large sizes. Flat bed bodies are available, some with tilting mechanisms. Refrigerated cargo boxes are on offer as well.

Organizations that are interested in customized electric vans include municipalities, craft shops, energy suppliers, waste disposal companies, airports, facility management enterprises, and catering companies. “What sets StreetScooter apart in particular is the ability to produce affordable , customized electric ⚡ vehicles for our customers from a variety of industries and countries,” says Achim Kampker, CEO of StreetScooter.

Gerdes tells NASDAQ.com he foresees the possibility that the company may be spun off as a publicly traded entity with its own IPO. “It’s theoretically possible. We’re looking at the next two to three years,” he says.

What really, really torques me about vehicles is the FACT that they weigh hundreds of times what they are used to carry. In a sane world, you make vehicle SUPER light with a SUPER small motor so you will SUPER save. But, the women are afraid they will be crushed in their light fragile vehicle by a semi or an SUV or a a big car or whatever. So, they want a strong HEAVY thing that can take a crash. It's like an ARMS RACE! The security obsessed drivers want vehicles that are less and lees energy efficient instead of more.

It gets worse. If you go out there in a motorbike with a light tow trailer or some light Electric Cargo Bike, which can carry as much groceries EASILY as the trunk and back seat of my Camry could, some ass hole who sees you aren't "from here" will deliberately run you off the road "by accident" or, when they are in a good mood, yell some obscenities at you to "Go back where you came from".

Even if you don't have to worry about that prejudice stuff, there are plenty of crazies out there who honestly believe their vehicle is an extention of their personality. So, they have penchant for bullying the small fry light vehicles out there. What a STUPID society!

California Goes Big On Transportation Electrification Hoping To Spur More EV Adoption

June 6, 2018

By Tom Ewing [Freelance Writer]

Late last week, California’s three largest investor owned utilities (IOUs), which provide service to over 30 million people, agreed to a five-year, $738 million plan to invest in transportation electrification. The plan was formally approved in a unanimous vote by the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC), the culmination of a process required by California’s 2015 Senate Bill 350, which set a timeline and pathway for transportation electrification to help advance CA’s clean air and greenhouse gas reduction goals. (CA’s smaller IOUs are on a different timeline.)

The IOU’s projects are complex and multilayered, deliberately linking a range of issues, from economic to social, including new rate policies, competition and private-sector opportunities and concerns about environmental justice.

The projects will be built around the following core activities:

֍ San Diego Gas & Electric will implement a $137 million Residential Charging Program. Rebates will help customers install up to 60,000 Level 2 charging stations. SDG&E will complement this with an optional EV-only rate that varies hourly based on day-ahead forecasts of grid conditions.

֍ Pacific Gas & Electric will invest in “Make-Ready” programs (a term primarily referring to distribution infrastructure, e.g., wires/cables/utility poles), spending $22 million for about 234 fast charging stations and $236 million for at least 700 sites supporting electrification for a minimum of 6500 medium or heavy-duty trucks.

֍ Southern California Edison will install make-ready infrastructure at a minimum of 870 sites to support electrification of at least 8490 medium or heavy-duty vehicles. And, SCE will establish three new commercial “time-of-use” rates.

The $738 million five-year cost includes $29.5 million set aside for program evaluation. Program costs will largely be recovered via customers’ rates. But that doesn’t mean that every ratepayer will be equally affected. For example, electric vehicle (EV) owners (from private autos to transit buses to freight and drayage equipment), obviously, will pay for the power they use and related charging infrastructure, although there are rebates for some of those costs.

The Commission worked to abide by the principle that these rather singularly focused programmatic investments should largely be paid for by those who benefit, i.e., EV owners. However, if investments benefit all ratepayers than Commissioners can judge it fair that everyone chips in.

It’s a difficult balance to advance public policy goals without impacting electric rates. Many TE specialists, however, expect that EVs will benefit the larger, overall electric grid, providing storage, power and stabilization.

Of course, that’s still in the future, making cost allocation now a bit of a ****; but there’s no progress without risk. Whether the Commission got it right will be closely watched, in California and across the nation.

Commissioner Carla Peterman, who wrote the policy guidance for the IOUs, said that the CPUC’s decision weighed costs and benefits for all rate-payers “and directs significant portions of the utility programs to disadvantaged communities often hit hardest by traffic and air pollution.”

“If we’re successful much of the nation will likely follow California’s lead, and together we will make a difference in the fight against climate change,” she added.

2019 Hyundai Ioniq preview

Aaron Cole

Jun 14, 2018

The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq returns this year as an inexpensive alternative for green car shoppers on a budget. 😎

Its lineup has fully matured now; the Ioniq is available as an affordable hybrid, a slightly more expensive plug-in hybrid, or a fully electric model available in limited areas. We say: green, greener, or greenest—no bad pick.

The most notable change for the Ioniq this year is the addition of standard automatic emergency braking on the Hybrid SEL, the bread-and-butter trim level that likely starts at just more than $25,000 (Hyundai hasn't yet announced pricing for the 2019 models). The SEL trim level includes heated front seats, 16-inch wheels, power-adjustable driver's seat, and LED daytime lights.

Value-minded buyers can find nearly as many features for less money, however. Likely starting around $23,000, the base 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Blue is equipped with a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatibility, cloth upholstery, a 6-speed automatic transmission, 1.56-kwh lithium-ion battery, and 15-inch wheels. The base Ioniq Blue has the distinction of being the most fuel-efficient car without a plug on sale in the U.S. with a 58 mpg combined rating. Other Ioniq Hybrids are rated at 55 mpg combined due to added weight and different tires.

At the top of the pile is the Ioniq Limited that swaps in leather upholstery, a sunroof, 17-inch wheels, and Hyundai's telematics system for more than $28,000 to start.

A spend-up package is available for SEL and Limited models that upgrades the touchscreen to an 8.0-inch unit with navigation, adds premium audio, wireless cellphone charging, and advanced voice recognition.

Plug-in hybrid and all-electric models are available in base and Limited trim levels. Plug-in hybrids likely will cost nearly $26,000 and electric models ring the bell at just over $30,000 before applicable federal and state incentives are factored in.

The Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid swaps out the hybrid's 1.56-kwh battery for a larger 8.9-kwh battery system that delivers an EPA-rated 29 miles of electric range before the 1.6-liter inline-4 internal combustion engine kicks in. It's rated at 52 mpg combined as a hybrid.

The Ioniq Electric is limited in availability—and in other ways. The electric Ioniq only offers 124 miles of range, significantly less than the Bolt EV and the upcoming 2019 Nissan Leaf with a bigger battery. The Ioniq Electric is only available in Southern California too 👎, and a confusing charging reimbursement program was dropped for 2018. That may not matter to seasoned EV owners who are accustomed to off-peak charging or who are familiar with existing charging infrastructure, but the Ioniq Electric is hardly appealing to first-time EV buyers with its limited range and availability.

In any powertrain configuration, the Ioniq's best trait may be its ability to blend in seamlessly to everyday operation. There are no "look at me" styling cues to give away the Ioniq's efficient powertrain, and it's dangerously close to being completely normal.

That also figures into the Ioniq Hybrid's usability. The cargo hold is still 23.5 cubic feet (marginally smaller than a Prius) but its wide opening makes most of that space usable. The Ioniq's touchscreen and infotainment is still one of our faves, made better with smartphone compatibility that new buyers might prefer.

We still think the most likeable part of the Ioniq Hybrid is its low price and three available powertrain configurations that is, so far, unmatched by any of its competitors.
