Electric cars are coming fast -- and that’s not just the opinion of carmakers anymore. Total SA, one of the world’s biggest oil producers, is now saying EVs may constitute almost a third of new-car sales by the end of the next decade.

The surge in battery powered vehicles will cause demand for oil-based fuels to peak in the 2030s, Total Chief Energy Economist Joel Couse said at Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s conference in New York on Tuesday. EVs will make up 15 percent to 30 percent of new vehicles by 2030, after which fuel “demand will flatten out,” Couse said. “Maybe even decline.”

Couse’s projection for electric cars is the highest yet by a major oil company and exceeds BNEF’s own forecast, said Colin McKerracher, head of advanced transport analysis at Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

“That’s big,” McKerracher said. “That’s by far the most aggressive we’ve seen by any of the majors."

Source: Bloomberg New Energy Finance

Other oil companies have been trimming their long-term forecasts for oil demand. Royal Dutch Shell Plc Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden said in March that oil demand may peak in the late 2020s. It set up a business unit to identify the clean technologies where it could be most profitable.

Electric cars are beginning to compete with gasoline models on both price and performance. The most expensive part of an electric car is the battery, which can make up half the total cost, according to BNEF. The first electric cars to be competitive on price have been in the luxury class, led by Tesla Inc.’s Model S, which is now the best-selling large luxury car in the U.S.

But battery prices are dropping by about 20 percent a year, and automakers have been spending billions to electrify their fleets. Volkswagen AG is targeting 25 percent of its sales to be electric by 2025. Toyota Motor Corp. plans to phase out fossil fuels altogether by 2050.

Electric cars currently make up about 1 percent of global vehicle sales, but traditional carmakers are preparing for transformation. In 2018, Volkswagen plows into electrification with an Audi SUV and the first high-speed U.S. charging network to rival Tesla’s Superchargers. Tata Motors Ltd.’s Jaguar and Volvo Cars both have promising cars on the way too, and by 2020, the avalanche really begins, with Mercedes-Benz, VW, General Motors Co. and others releasing dozens of new models.

Quote
“By 2020 there will be over 120 different models of EV across the spectrum,” said Michael Liebreich, founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance. “These are great cars. They will make the internal combustion equivalent look old fashioned.”

The Electric Vehicle Disruption - End Of Oil by 2030

Quote
Published on Apr 4, 2016

Tony Seba's Clean Disruption Keynote presentation at the Swedbank Nordic Energy Summit in Oslo, Norway, March 17th, 2016.

The keynote, based on the book 'Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation' assert that four technology categories will disrupt energy and transportation by:
1- Batteries / Energy Storage
2- Electric Vehicles
3- Self-Driving Vehicles
4- Solar Energy

The outcome of the Clean Disruption is that by 2030
• All new vehicles will be electric.
• All new vehicles will be autonomous (self-driving).
• Oil will be obsolete.
• Coal, natural gas and nuclear will be obsolete.
• 80+ per cent of parking spaces will be obsolete.
• Individual car ownership will be obsolete.
• All new energy will be provided by solar (and wind)

Clean Disruption is a technology disruption. Just like digital cameras disrupted film and the web disrupted publishing, Clean Disruption is inevitable and it will be swift.

City of Loja (Ecuador) Purchases 30 All-Electric BYD e5 “EcoTaxis”

May 2nd, 2017 by Kyle Field

BYD has rolled out the largest fleet of electric taxis in Ecuador, thanks to the City of Loja purchasing 30 BYD e5 taxis. (picture at article link)

The purchase of the electric taxis was initiated by a local community-driven effort that secured government funding to finance the purchase. The community-driven effort speaks to deep environmental roots in the Loja region, which initiated a recycling program in the 1990s and more recently an installation of wind turbines to generate clean, renewable electricity.

The Mayor of Loja, Bolivar Castillo, took a moment to thank the activists in the community for their efforts to connect the electric taxi idea, BYD, and local leaders in an effort to catalyze the adoption of the “Eco Taxi.”

“This demonstrates that the people of Loja are not afraid to try new things. Cities like ours will pave the way for others to follow.”

BYD Business Manager of BYD E-Motors Ecuador, Jorge Burbano, shared a similar sentiment while also noting strong support from local government and financial officials in the region:

“The strong support from the government and the development bank Corporación Financiera Nacional shows united effort to create a sustainable living environment. We are impressed by their conviction and perseverance to make EcoTaxis a reality.”

When Ecuador signed the Paris Agreement on climate change, it was fully committed to deliver on its promises. The purchase of the 30 BYD e5s for use as taxis are a meaningful step in that direction and results in a direct reduction in emissions, especially since 43.6% of Ecuador’s electricity is generated from renewable sources  .

Ecuador’s electricity mix has been transforming over the last few decades and now sits with 42% of its power capacity coming from hydropower and another ~13% coming from wind, solar, biomass, and steam turbines. In parallel to the conversion to renewables, Ecuador has invested heavily in its high-voltage transmission infrastructure, which opens up options in other regions and supports the intermittent nature of renewables.

This latest integration of these 30 BYD e5s into Loja is merely the latest of many around the world. It continues to lead the charge for plug-in vehicles for mass transit and fleet applications, which, while they see less attention from global mainstream media, are making an important impact on emissions around the world. BYD’s buses eliminate noxious diesel emissions in some of the most densely populated cities in the world, while BYD e5 and e6 taxis eliminate non value-add idling that is so common amongst taxis in cities.

Ecuador may be the latest country in Latin America to take a step towards a renewable future, but it is impressive to note that every country in Latin America signed the Paris Agreement.

The video below provides an overview of the installation (in Spanish  ;D).

Survey: Diesel car drivers ponder switch

Only two in five diesel car drivers plan to stick with the technology when buying their next car, while the rest are unsure or want to switch to an alternative drive, according to a survey by pollster forsa, reports news agency dpa. Most respondents said they would buy a petrol-fuelled car , while pure e-cars were not very popular, writes dpa.

Deutsche See snags Post’s electric Scooter

German postal service Deutsche Post has found the first major customer for its in-house produced electric vehicle Street Scooter, Florian Zerfass writes in weekly Bild am Sonntag (BamS). Fish wholesaler Deutsche See is buying 80 scooters for distributing its products in Germany’s inner cities, Zerfass writes.

Deutsche See CEO Egbert Miebach told BamS he had been trying to reduce his company’s CO2 emissions for years and bought 500 VW cars with allegedly climate-friendly diesel technology in 2010. After VW’s diesel emissions fraud scandal emerged in 2015, Deutsche See sued the carmaker for almost twelve million euros in damages.
Deutsche Post recently announced plans to double the production capacity of its Street Scooter to 20,000, making it the country’s largest e-car producer. Deutsche See’s scooter will be the first electric van with a modern cooling system, partly powered by a PV membrane on the car’s roof  ;D, the company said in a press release.

Unstoppable Zoe (European EV Sales Report)

May 6th, 2017 by Jose Pontes

SNIPPET:

The European EV market had 29,000 registrations in March, up 30% over the same month last year, making it the third best month ever, only behind the incentive-inflated Decembers of 2015 (34,000) and 2016 (30,000). At this pace, the European EV market is set to reach the 300,000 units milestone by year end. Furthermore the EV market share now coasts at a record 1.5%.

5 Reasons To Buy An Electric Car

Published on Apr 3, 2016

5 Reasons To Buy An Electric Car. Driving the 2016 Nissan Leaf, I discuss the many benefits of driving an electric vehicle. The instant torque and peak torque from 0 RPM, the incredibly low maintenance (tire rotations and cabin filter changes), the incredible efficiency (about 3x the efficiency of an ICE vehicle), the convenience of charging, and the affordability of leasing an electric car.

Vehicle-To-Grid Discharge, Even At Constant Power, Is Detrimental To EV Battery Performance, Study Finds  :(

May 16th, 2017 by James Ayre

SNIPPET:

There have long been critics of the idea of widespread use of electric vehicle (EV) vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies for a variety of reasons, but largely in relation to the potential damage done to EV batteries, and thus reduced battery lifespan.

New research from the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii at Manoa seems to clearly support this assertion — the extra cycling that accompanies use of an EV battery for grid balancing, even when at constant power, reduces EV battery cell performance significantly.

To be more specific, the use of an EV with V2G tech could reduce the working lifespan of an EV battery pack to under 5 years time, according to the new work.  :(  :P

The researchers note, though, that simply delaying the charging of EVs as a means of balancing the grid would have only a “negligible” effect on EV batteries, and could thus represent a better option. However, this could prove to not be the case in environments warmer than “room temperature.”

V2G Battery Degradation

https://cleantechnica.com/2017/05/16/vehicle-grid-discharge-even-constant-power-detrimental-ev-battery-performance-study-finds/

Agelbert COMMENT: Well, provided this is true, EV car manufacturers should use common sense and join with electric Utilities to offer EV car buyers a 10 year guarantee, WITHOUT ANY ADDED CHARGES, for replacing the used battery pack with a new one. I make the caveat about "no added charges" because the fun and games on the average lead acid battery "guarantee" is, and always was, a rip off.

Avoiding peaking costs is well worth the 10 year battery pack guarantee. In fact, if we had a sane government, they would REMOVE all the fossil fuel "subsidies" and, instead provide EV battery pack 10 year guarantee subsidies as a matter of National Security grid stability.

But common sense and logic in regard to renewable energy is rather difficult for the United Petro-States of America.

Fossil fueler shows up with the old "not ready for prime time" baloney disguised as prudent advice:
wattleberry

A useful warning to users of today's batteries but of limited relevance to their successors which, if anything, will be encouraged by the disclosure of another flaw awaiting correction in a key component of a product which is still at a very early stage of evolution.

agelbert > wattleberry

Like what, the tendrils that grow and short them? We know about that. The battery development is quite mature, thank you very much. It's the fossil fuel polluting machine called an internal combustion engine that never got past the profit over people and planet stage. Gas stations will soon go the way of the dodo bird too.

The only issue with batteries of any significance that needs improvement is rapid replacement technology. We NOW have access to electricity in FAR more places than we have access to gasoline. All we need is a small "spare" battery pack that can take us home or too a quick pack replacement location nearby if our main battery pack fails.

eveee

This discussion needs more clarity. People are defining whats better in odd ways. How do we define it? By how much the EV owner saves in retail electricity costs vs how much the value of the car is reduced by battery degeneration?

I tend to feel V2G doesn't make sense, because a car is not just a battery. However, when the battery is used more, the value of the car reduces.

If you want V2G, get a PowerWall instead. Then you are only reducing the value of the PowerWall, not the car.

A PowerWall is 6500. A Model S is > 65000. 10x.

Now on the other hand, we are only looking at one storage scenario, load shifting.

Already, California is starting a demand response program that pays users not to use electricity during peaks and allow the utility to dial back demand when it needs to.

That is an area for an EV owner to benefit by allowing charging to be controlled or timed to miss expensive peak demand times. That makes total sense.

Renault Zoe Hiccups, But Remains #1 (Europe Electric Car Sales Report)
May 30th, 2017 by Jose Pontes

SNIPPET:

Looking at the monthly model ranking:

#1 Renault Zoe – Due to some quality glitches, the deliveries of some 2,000 Zoe were delayed, hurting April’s performance of the French hatchback, which last month only landed 1,627 registrations, its worst result of the year. But that was still enough to win Europe’s monthly best seller status for the fourth month in a row. Due to these production hiccups, the model’s performance suffered across Europe, from its home market (939 registrations, down 5%) to Austria (96, down 2%). Nevertheless, it somehow managed to grow in the all-important German market (280 registrations, up 27%).

#2 BMW i3 – The German hot hatch had its worst-selling month in Europe since the massive arrival of the 33 kWh battery, with 1,562 cars being delivered. Despite this, deliveries were up 27% year over year (YoY), with good numbers especially in Norway (426 registrations), all of them being fully electrics(!), but also in its home Germany (357), the United Kingdom (195), and Austria (93). Looking ahead, expect deliveries to slowly drop throughout the summer as people anticipate the revised version, coming later in the year.

#3 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – After a tight race with the BMW i3, the Japanese SUV ended March in 3rd place (1,507 registrations, down 15% YoY). Despite reaching interesting sales levels in important markets, like Germany (294 units) or Norway (222 units), Mitsubishi will have a hard time finding a replacement for UK sales — incentives for PHEVs have now become much less appealing there.

#4 Nissan Leaf – Thanks to deep discounting, the ageing hatch is resisting a wipeout from the newer offerings, reaching 4th place despite registrations going down 31% YoY to 1,326 units. With steady sales in its stronghold markets — like Norway (287 units), the United Kingdom (350), and France (198) — and a surprising performance in Sweden (189 units, a new record), the veteran model is keeping momentum by appealing to a new demographic still untapped by EVs: Bargain Hunters.

#5 Mercedes GLC350e – The (not so big) surprise of the month came from the Mercedes GLC350e. This trendy Mercedes model is in the intersection of two hot trends on the Old Continent: SUVs and plug-ins, all served in a Euro-friendlier size than the yacht-like models above it (Tesla Model X, Volvo XC90 …). The GLC350e landed #5 in April with 961 registrations. The largest markets for the Mercedes SUV were Belgium (204 units, new record), Norway (179 units), and Germany (126). The three-pointed star has hit a homerun with this model, especially considering that it doesn’t have direct competition among the premium brands. (Well, perhaps not a homerun in Europe — maybe a hat trick.)

Tesla Model S

When will the Tesla Model S be redesigned?

John Gustafson, Tesla owner since 2011

Answered May 23, 2015

Remember that Tesla is very unlike other car companies that stop working on the engineering of a car and then send it to dealer lots. To the extent possible, they continue to offer improvements to what they have already sold. Elon Musk has voiced this philosophy. If the changes are software upgrades, then they are free; if the changes involve hardware, then of course there is a charge for them, but it is possible in many cases to upgrade a car to the equivalent of a newer model. Some of that has already happened with the Model S, though of course it is pretty tough to upgrade a single-motor model to a dual-motor model.

The Tesla Roadster owners are being offered upgrades that raise the range from 245 miles (235 miles for the Roadster Sport) to around 400 miles, and the changes are more than simply swapping the battery for one with higher energy density; they also change some of the aerodynamics of the car to reduce drag, and swap the tires for ones with much lower rolling resistance.

The Model S is currently getting self-driving features, incrementally. Which is wise, because it takes a while to get used to a car that can drive itself. People who bought a Model S are now getting upgraded to a car that, on command from a smart phone, can open the garage door with HomeLink, back out, close the garage door, adjust the seat and mirrors and temperature and set the preferred audio, drive to the front door, and unlock the driver door when the driver gets within a few feet of the car. That's a lot of software, and the kind of software that takes an excruciating amount of testing effort to assure safety.

So the question "When will the Tesla Model S be redesigned?" might be answered as follows: "It is being redesigned all the time, and many of the improvements are available to existing owners  , so there is little reason to wait for a redesign in the hope of getting a more technologically advanced car, like you have to do with other car companies."
