Hyundai ⚡ Ioniq 5, Kia ⚡ EV6 top 300 miles of EPA range, beat all rivals but ⚡ Model Y in efficiency

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 are the first two models to be built on Hyundai’s global ⚡ E-GMP platform dedicated to electric vehicles.

At least in theory, that means these new models aren’t bound to some of the drawbacks that can hinder design, packaging, and sometimes efficiency for models adapted from internal combustion platforms. They've both also boasted of the capability for DC fast-charging from 10% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes.

With ratings released on Monday, the Ioniq 5 and EV6 just got their first, early indication on where they’ll stand on that efficiency point—and specifically, on range.

The good news is that in both cases, in their longest-legged rear-wheel-drive long-range versions, the Ioniq 5 and EV6 both top 300 miles of range.

The quirky 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 earns an EPA range rating of 303 miles in that combination, while shifting to the dual-motor version and all-wheel drive drops the range rating to 256 miles.

So far, Hyundai has only said that it will offer the Ioniq 5’s largest pack, at 77.4 kwh. But with a smaller 58-kwh battery and rear-wheel drive, the Ioniq 5 earns a very respectable 220 miles.

The 2022 Kia EV6, which looks a bit more conventionally aerodynamic, does slightly better. It earns an EPA-rated 310 miles of range in its rear-wheel-drive long-range form, with the same 77.4-kwh battery pack. In all-wheel-drive long-range form, it’s rated at 274 miles. With the smaller 58-kwh battery, in single-motor form, it goes 232 miles.

Efficiency for the EV6 models rates at 105 MPGe (3.1 miles per kwh) for the all-wheel-drive model and 117 MPGe (3.4 mi/kwh) for both single-motor models. As for the Ioniq 5, it ranges from 98 MPGe (2.9 mi/kwh) for the big-battery, dual-motor model up to 114 MPGe (3.3 mi/kwh) for the big-battery, single-motor version. Note that the range is calculated with a different method than the efficiency.

First deliveries of the Ioniq 5 are due by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the EV6 isn’t arriving until early next year. While it’s unusual to see an entire model line show up in the EPA ratings potentially months before they’re reaching dealerships, the paperwork for it might have been submitted at the same time as that for the Ioniq 5, as the parent company of Hyundai and Kia has done at various times before when there’s a high level of carryover between models.

We’re eager to check in on what gives at least one version of the Ioniq 5 that 300-mile-topping range while the rest of the lineup is quite a bit lower. With seat time in the near future—the Hyundai especially—we’ll bring you more soon.

Tesla Video Games, Mercedes TV — Are Touchscreens Making Driving More Dangerous?


Should touchscreens in cars offer entertainment options while driving? Some think doing so makes cars more dangerous, not less.

A warning does appear on the touchscreen before the game starts that says, “Solitaire is a game for everyone, but playing while the car is in motion is only for passengers.” A button asks for confirmation that the player is a passenger, but the driver can play simply by touching that button. NHTSA has issued guidelines telling automakers that any in-vehicle entertainment devices should be designed so the driver cannot use them “to perform inherently distracting secondary tasks while driving.”

Four years ago, after investigating a fatal Autopilot crash, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended Tesla add an infrared camera to improve driver monitoring, but the company has not done so. “It’s incredibly frustrating,” says Jennifer Homendy, chair of the NTSB. “We’re trying to warn the public and tell Tesla, ‘Hey, you need to put some safeguards in.’ But they haven’t.” In light of Tesla’s constant insistence that it is doing everything possible to make its cars as safe as possible, it’s behavior in the real world calls into question whether this is all about Elon Musk being pig headed. It certainly seems that way to outsiders.

Driver Inattention Is ☠️ Deadly

Driver inattention is officially cited as the cause of about 10 percent of traffic deaths, say Steve Kiefer, a senior General Motors executive who is also the head of a foundation dedicated to combating distracted driving. He and other safety experts believe the actual figure is much higher because crash investigations often overlook distraction while naming other causes such as reckless driving. “I think the number’s closer to 50 percent,” Mr. Kiefer said. The Kiefer Foundation is dedicated to his son, Mitchel, who was killed in 2016 when a distracted driver rear-ended his car on a highway in Michigan.

Preventing such inattentive driving is one of the primary reasons why semi-autonomous automatic driver assistance systems (ADAS) are appearing on more and more cars. Writing for Autoblog, Byron Hurd says, “Advanced driver-assistance systems ostensibly give us fewer things to actively monitor, effectively freeing up our attention. But for what?

“Human behavior is the weakest link in automotive safety,” he writes. “Yet automakers are training their semi-autonomous systems to behave more [like human drivers]. We’re told one line but sold another. It seems weird that effort is being put into making cars drive more like they’re being controlled by humans if humans are the weak link to begin with.” Then he gets down to the meat of his argument:

A good friend of mine lost his 21 year old daughter because she was texting while driving. She was on the highway and drove right under the semi trailer.

I have been worried this was comming from the first time I saw a car that replaced the instrument cluster with a flat screen. I figured it was only a matter of time before someone used that screen for an entertainment system. When screens where first introduced to cars they where only allowed in the back seats out of the view of the drivers.
Distracted driving is every bit as deadly as drunk driving. A screen in view of the driver shouldn't be allowed to display anything not directly related to the task of driving the car period. Navigation and vehicle status. The drive can only be distracted by games movies and the likes.

Excellent article! It was high time somebody talked about this.

The issue here is how a person in charge of driving a vehicle should divide his attention. It is clear to anyone with a lick of sense that paying enough attention to what the vehicle is headed towards is sine qua non to avoiding a tragic accident.

As a former commercial pilot, I remember the importance of NOT fixating on a single instrument when "on the gages" (i.e. in the zero visibility weather soup). When pilots trained for this, we had to develop the skill of doing a proper crosscheck. A proper crosscheck forces your brain to update the overall picture of the power settings, pitch attitude, bank angle, heading and engine instruments. Of course the artificial horizon temps you to just look at that, which can lead to problems from not monitoring fuel flow or engine oil pressure and temperature.

On top of all this, pilots are quite used to using an autopilot, something Tesla drivers now are increasingly relying on. Pilots were NOT supposed to stop their crosscheck just because the autopilot was on.

Now some reading this may think this autopilot business is irrelevant to touchscreen distractions. No, it isn't. It all goes back to the crosscheck.

A Tesla driver MUST cultivate the habit of a proper crosscheck, regardless of how "boring and repetitious" it may seem.

A crosscheck is the habit of willing your eyes to MOVE 👀, every two or three seconds at most after viewing the previous position, from there to there to there to there and back to the first "there", over and over again as long as you are in the driver's seat of your car.

THAT HABIT will keep you out of accidents caused by touchscreen distractions and/or overreliance on the "autopilot".

THAT HABIT forces your brain to update the overall picture of everything you need to know to react quickly and decisively if, or when, the situation warrants it.

If you a "have to" look away from the road to a touchscreen for more than 3 seconds, for ANY reason, including tuning another station or looking up some stat on your energy use (If you value your life and that of the passengers, FORGET viewing someone or something on your cellphone or playing some stupid video game), you need to GET OFF THE ROAD and STOP, PERIOD.

The NYPD has almost 10,000 vehicles in its fleet. In that context, the purchase of 250 Tesla Model 3 vehicles does not sound as impressive, but it would nonetheless give the NYPD the title of largest fleet of electric police vehicles in the world — as far as we know.

The bike offered ⚡ insane amount of power ;D and as I tried pulling full throttle the bike started wobbling and the next three seconds were the worst experience of this whole build. I definately would have twice the number of bones on my way back home if I kept on pulling the throttle anymore. The maxmium speed we were able to take this bike to is 70 km/h :o compensating the speedometer error and still there is alot more power left. To my guess it can easily touch 85km/h but better let it be a guess still if anyone willing to break his bones can test this bike for us we would be more than thankful. The maximum power draw during these tests was around ⚡ 5 killowatts which was not a problem for speed controller to handle but after 14 kilometer run the motor was getting extremly hot.

Volvo FH Electric Heavy Duty Truck Exceeds Expectations On Test Run

Volvo Trucks expects to begin series production of its FH Electric heavy duty truck later this year. Recently, the company sent journalist Jan Burgdorf on a test drive of the Green Truck Route, a 343-kilometer journey through the hills of southeastern Germany. It features a variety of terrain together with a combination of secondary roads and highways, making it ideal for simulating real world driving conditions.

The FH Electric has some impressive specs. It features a 540 kWh battery, 490 kW (657 hp) of continuous power, and over 2,400 NM (1,770 ft-lb) of torque. Fully loaded to its maximum legal gross weight of 40 metric tons (88,185 lb), Burgdorf and his co-driver, Tobias Bergman, media test director for Volvo Trucks, set off to see how the FH Electric would perform.

“I have to say, when driving this truck it is as agile, or even more agile, than a diesel truck. Drivers will be very surprised about how easy it is to drive, how quiet it is, and how well it responds. There are no vibrations whatsoever,” Burgdorf says. (See video below.)

Germany’s Plugin EV Share At Record 36% In December

Germany, Europe’s largest auto market and the world’s 5th largest, saw plugin electric vehicle share hit a record of 35.7% in December, up from 26.6% year-on-year. Full battery electrics took 21.3% of the market. Overall auto volumes were down to 227,630 units, the lowest December result of recent decades. Seeing significant month-on-month growth were three of the most affordable electrics, the VW e-up!, Renault Twingo, and Dacia Spring.


December’s record combined plugin result of 35.7% comprised 21.3% full battery electrics (BEVs) and 14.4% plugin hybrids (PHEVs), a weighting roughly consistent with recent months.

2021’s Q4 combined plugin result was 33.7% (with 19.7% BEV and 14.0% PHEV). This was decent year-on-year growth from the Q4 2020 result of 21.7% (with 10.9% BEV and 10.8% PHEV). We can see that BEVs led that growth.

2021’s cumulative full year plugin result was 26.0% (with 13.6% BEV and 12.4% PHEV). This is close to double the full year 2020 plugin share of 13.5% (with 6.7% BEV and 6.8% PHEV). Notice how BEVs more than doubled their share over the 12 months.  :o 

Meanwhile old-school (non-electric-asssist) diesel fell from 23.9% in Q4 last year to 16.2% in Q4 2021, thus trending towards near-zero by the end of 2023. Old-school petrol fell from 39.9% in Q4 2020 to 33.6% in Q4 2021, so might seem, prima facie, to have around 5 years left, but will have no place to hide once diesels are gone.


I estimate that petrol will likely fall to near-zero at some time between 2024 and 2025, if not before, but much depends on the trends in hybrids and especially plugin hybrids, which will take over from petrol in the short-to-medium term. In the longer term almost everything will move to BEV.

Popular BEVs in Germany

December saw the usual end-of year push from the Tesla Model 3 (#1 with 6,096 units) and the Renault Zoe (#3, with 4,571 units).

More surprising was a big push by the Volkswagen e-Up! which had been averaging around 2,000 units per month in H2 2021, but saw a remarkable 5,343 units in December, beating out the Zoe to grab the #2 spot, and not too far behind the Tesla Model 3.

Other breakout December performances were shown by the Renault Twingo (recently averaging ~540 per month but with 1,937 in December) and the Dacia Spring (averaging ~370 but with 1,842 in December).

These three diminutive BEVs are some of the most affordable currently available, so it’s great to see their supply volumes step up in Germany. I’m pretty sure there is a deep well of unmet demand for these great value BEVs across Europe. Who knows what their sales volumes might be if unconstrained by supply?


Taking a step back from the ebbs and flows of single-month performance, let’s look at the whole of Q4 2021. The top 3 contenders are the same, but — contrary to December’s result — the Smart Fourtwo, Volkswagen ID.3, and Skoda Enyaq are in the next three positions:


There aren’t too many other surprises in the top 20, but it’s interesting that the Porsche Taycan doesn’t even make the grade in its home market of Germany (it’s at #24), whilst being at #10 in Norway!

For folks wondering, the Tesla Model Y is also just outside the Q4 top 20… at #21. That will surely change in 2022 as soon as the Berlin Gigafactory gets rolling.

Looking at industry players, starting with brands, Volkswagen brand took the top spot in Q4 with 14.8% share of all BEVs[/b], ahead of Renault (12.3%), with Tesla close behind in third (11.5%).

In terms of Q4 manufacturing groups, the Volkswagen Group was very dominant, over 50% ahead of its nearest rival, Renault-Nissan. Here’s the chart:


Outlook        🦖


2021 was a banner year for the electro-mobility transition in Germany, with Q4 pulling the country above one-third plugin share, and helping to rapidly push Europe to new highs. To have been able to continue the remarkable growth trend set by 2020 was great to see. Recall that Q4 2019 was only around 3% share!

Being Europe’s largest market, Germany’s trajectory forwards in 2022 will be particularly influenced by overall volume of BEV manufacturing. With long waiting lists, demand is definitely not the bottleneck (see my recent France report for a discussion), so 2022’s result will be at the whim of how many BEVs are actually being made.

However, I don’t see European manufacturers as holding back their transition to making more BEVs (and PHEVs), as these are obviously the only growth area in a highly pressured industry. The constraint, if any, will be battery supply. Temporarily shifting the balance between BEVs and PHEVs (or even REX-BEVs) can make tight battery supply go a bit further, if necessary.

I expect we will see Germany’s plugins stay above 30% in Q1 2022, and steadily climb into the mid 40s by Q4. The balance between PHEVs and BEVs will depend on that cell supply, and how quickly manufactures ramp up BEVs. Other things being equal (but they aren’t really at the moment, are they?), their relative weightings will remain close to recent trends.

I just came from the ​Green Car Reports web site where a pro-gas guzzler propagandist tried to spin some stats to downplay EV adoption rates. For the sake of the other readers there, I did what I could to show him he was, to put it mildly, interpreting the data incorrectly.

Stellantis still has a 10% operating profit margin despite having the same problems everyone else had last year. if y-u think EV's are going to take the world by storm, better read the Road & Track article that just came out.

IOW, fully 31 percent of consumers expect their next vehicle to be powered by batteries. 🤠

If Road & Track looks at the stats five years ago, the percentage of consumers expecting their next vehicle to be and EV powered by batteries was less than 3%. That means that in a mere five years, we see around a tenfold increase in EV love while ICE love decreased well over 25%.

Furthermore, a graph of the change in expectations for those wanting another internal combustion 🦖 pollution mobile and those who want an ⚡ EV shows, to anyone who can properly interpret graphed rates of adoption of new technology (i.e. ⚡ EVs 🌞) versus loss of demand for the old (i.e. 🦖) technology it is replacing, that it is panic time for gas guzzler manufacturers. A 1,000 percent plus rate increase in EV love in a mere five years, still growing exponentially, cannot be ignored.

Why Do So Many US Drivers Want At Least 300 Miles of Range Before Considering the Purchase of an Electric Vehicle?

Well duh you might be thinking. Loren, is this a rhetorical question? In the article I outline 10 reasons why US drivers think they need/or actually do need to have 300 miles of range in a BEV. For some use cases (rural, frequent road trips, extreme cold driving, towing), having 300 miles or more of range is absolutely a legitimate requirement for owning a BEV. But the reality is, and especially as DC fast charging speeds increase, most of us can get by just fine with perhaps 250 miles of range.

Our first EV, the Tesla Model S 60 had 209 miles of range and it was near perfect for our needs. We even drove it on six, 450 mile each way road trips and did just fine. That range was perfect for our normal use, but admittedly a little short for the road trips and 250 or miles would have meant needing to stop one less time to charge. Our current Model S with 335 miles of range is a road-trip beast, but the rest of the time the massive 100 kWh battery is an absolute waste of resources and energy. I recently saw a few articles pointing to a study by Auto Insurance EZ which analyzed and compared data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and government recall data from recalls.gov. ... ...

One key point from the study showed that hybrid vehicles have the most vehicle fires per 100,000 vehicle sales, followed by gasoline-powered vehicles. However, we should not forget that Chevy recalled over 140,000 Bolts due to a few of the vehicles catching on fire. EV fires can occur, but compared with gas fires, it’s important to remember that they are pretty uncommon. EVs placed third with only 25 fires per 100,000 EV sales.

The study not only looks into fires and recalls to see if EVs are more prone to car fires than gas or hybrid cars but also discusses how cars catch fire, shares expert advice on car fires, and addresses frequently asked questions. ... ...

The idea that you shouldn’t buy an EV because the batteries can catch on fire is 🦖 pure manufactured FUD. However, we can’t overlook that there are risks. There are risks in everything. The importance lies in being safe and utilizing safe practices while driving.

Well, that is scary news, isn’t it? A major manufacturer is admitting that it may take years of driving before its battery electric vehicles reach the break-even point when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions. The answer, of course, is that a person needs to read and understand the entire 50-page report before drawing any conclusions. That someone would be me. Here’s what I found. 👍 ... ...

Volvo does say one thing that is curious. It claims part of the reason its electric cars create more emissions in the production phase is because they use more aluminum, yet the charts that accompany the report show the 🦕gasoline-powered XC40 has an aluminum content of 34%, while the XC40 Recharge uses 30% aluminum and the C40 Recharge 29%. ... ...

All this talk about carbon emissions overlooks one important point. In addition to the carbon dioxide that pours out of the tailpipes of conventional cars, they also spew a cloud of fine particulate matter into the atmosphere. Whether its coal, oil, gasoline, or diesel, fossil fuels create FPM pollution when they are burned. Fine particulates are so small they pass directly into the bloodstream in the lungs and travel to every part of our bodies, from our brains to our livers to our toes. They are found in breast milk and human placentas. They impair cognitive function, make us ill, and make us die sooner than we should. And for this the  fossil fuel advocates want to bash electric cars? What is wrong with you people?

The EV revolution has many pieces. It involves better battery technology, more efficient manufacturing, and an expansion of the supply of renewable energy. People who seize on one sentence of a 50-page report to flog their agenda are dishonest idiots. Ignore them. They will soon be irrelevant.

Perhaps, at some level, corporations and governments have always had an issue with telling the truth when sticking to the unvarnished truth is, in the short term, "unprofitable".

However, I am sick to death of the endless BOLD FACED avoidance of ACCOUNTABILITY (by BOTH Greedy Corporations and Governments) for all the damage to the environment that we-the-people have been forced to endure so some ethically challenged crooks and their bought and paid for politicians could continue to profit over planet fleece us 24/7.

They says they dd a "well to tank" analysis, John, but I am skeptical it included every factor, such as the ugly truth Bill McKibben revealed recently that 40% of all shipping emissions are attributable to moving fossil fuels in one form or another from place to place before they ever get burned by the end user.

And there is more. If the cherry picking bean counters bothered to look at how much electricity is just THROWN AWAY (SEE: power plant "shunting") every second of every day of every year, for the past 70 plus years, they might come to the realization that the reason this tremendous amount of wasted electricity was NOT used, instead, to make hydrogen for peaker plants that used hydrogen instead of fossil fuels is that the "business model" of electricity in the USA has NEVER BEEN focused on efficiency, but on using MORE hydrocarbon based fuels wherever they could.

The "approach" used by certain 🦖😈 gas guzzler manufacturers today, where "payback" time is figured for EVs versus "energy" costs to make gas guzzlers, completely IGNORES the BIAS designed into the grid of finding more excuses to use hydrocarbons.

Now that power plants are (SLOWLY 🥺) transitioning to renewable energy, which opens up the very practical possiblity of using shunting, something they can never get away from to smooth the frequency and voltage in an electricty grid, to make green hydrogen with electrolysis (i.e. it is FREE, regardless of the how "inefficient" this process is alleged to be), they want us looking at the cars, not the power plants. How convenient.

I'm not buying that misdirection. EVs use energy. Gas Guzzlers use MUCH more energy, and pollute as long as they run. It is mind bogglingly ignorant to ignore that basic irrefutable reality. Pollution mobiles have to be eliminated BECAUSE, unlike EVs, they pollute, PERIOD.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that every "natural" gas peaker plant in the USA could be replaced with hydrogen gas powered peaker plants using hydrogen produced from shunted electricity which is now sent to a dead end resistance = totally thrown away.

In a sane world, the goal is to get as much efficiency out of our power plants as possible. The world of hydrocarbons was NEVER about efficiency or sanity, it was about using more and more hydrocarbons. 👎😠

Parked EVs can help smooth the grid when there isn't much demand, but, in addition to that, making hydrogen gas when demand is low, to use in peaker plants when demand is high, would make the overall system much more efficient, as well as reducing pollution.

Electric Car Market Grows To 29% In Europe As EV Sales Explode!

While the overall automotive market continues falling off a cliff — it was -22% year over year (YoY) in December — Europe’s passenger plugin electric car market had a near-record month, with 280,200 registrations. That almost beat the 281,000 registrations of December 2020, which was inflated by the CO2 mandate rush.

This impressive result, added to the steep drop of the overall market, allowed the December plugin vehicle share to surge to a record 29% share. There was 19% full electric vehicle (BEV) share alone. The 2021 numbers rose above 2 million plugin vehicle sales, with the 2021 PEV share ending at 19% share (10% for BEVs alone). This is a significant departure from the 11% of 2020, and a far cry from the 3.6% of 2019. I think we can expect the 2022 plugin share to end above 25% (30%?), and with the plugin market merging further with the mainstream market, we are already witnessing some interesting events in the overall markets. For example, in 2021, the two European automotive markets that grew the most were Iceland (+36%) and Norway (+25%), which, incidentally, are the two markets with the highest plugin share on the continent.

And looking at the European electric car market in December, the automakers with the highest growth rates were SAIC’s MG (+116% YoY), which had nearly 100% of its sales coming from plugin vehicles; the heavily electrified Porsche (+35%), with the German brand now having the majority of its registrations coming from plugin models; Tesla (+34%); Mini (+14%), which had one third of its sales coming from its electrified lineup; and Dacia (+11%), now profiting from its rising star Spring EV, which represented 18% of all of the Romanian automaker’s deliveries in December. … So, as we can see, December gives a sneak peak of what will happen throughout 2022. From now on, if OEMs want to grow their sales, they need to have heavily electrified lineups, with plugins representing a sizable portion of their sales. It’s do or die. So, let the games begin….

Agelbert NOTE: Nice EV Pickup Truck but I do not see a price tag of 50 Grand as "little". There is no way that I could ever afford to pay that (plus 6% sales tax plus dealer fees, etc.  :() much for transportation. That said, the millions of businesses that use pickup trucks will probably go for it because they can deduct the vehicle cost from their taxes AND the operating/maintenance costs of this EV pickup will much less than those of the  🦕 gas guzzler version. So, I expect the F-150 ⚡ Lightning, both the Pro and non-Pro versions, will be a resounding success that puts the final nail in the coffin of 🦕 gas guzzler pollution mobiles
