Electric carchargers aren't chargers at all – EVSE Explained 🧐

Catchy title! But it's mostly true! There's a pinned comment you might want to read, as well. But there's some links down here, too.

A quick correction for you, the battery heater does function when CCS charging in cold conditions.  The complaint is that charge rate is reduced when the battery pack is cold, and the heater is only 2 KW.  The problem is that the battery heater shuts off around 64F pack temperature, and at that point maximum charge amps is still limited to less than 110 amps.  This may seem like a lot, but the Bolt max charging amps with a warm battery is 150 amps.  I think the logic was that when they set up the programming for the system, most publicly available CCS chargers maxed out at 100 amps, with a few 125 amp stations.  Now with lots of 125 amp stations and 150+ amp stations becoming available they need to reprogram the battery heater to vary it's shut off point based  on power available, so it stays on to a much higher pack temperature when connected to a higher power CCS station to maximize charging rate.

Firstly and of supreme importance, the video on the Bolt's Bits from Weber Auto - Prof. John Kelly is amazing and you really ought to give that channel a look if you're interested at all in hybrid and ⚡ EV tech;

Will Elio deliver this time?

Elio Motors pivots to ⚡ 150-mile Elio-E EV, gasoline version still not canceled

SNIPPETS:

Last week Elio Motors put a price on a 150-mile, fully ⚡ electric version of its high-efficiency, three-wheeled car: $14,900.  🌞👍

That’s a different format—and price—than the original Elio, which still hasn’t arrived 12 years after its original announcement :( and 9 years after its originally anticipated arrival date. Call the company a startup only in the sense that there hasn’t yet been a product delivery. 🤔

Since its 2009 inception Elio has been slowly working on the same single product—a three-wheeled vehicle powered by a gasoline engine, with the original plan to sell it for just $6,800, with a projected 84-mpg EPA-cycle fuel economy. By later this past decade, it was supposed to cost less than $8,000 and return more than 80 mpg.

Elio Motors 85 mpg 3 wheeler (Image Elio Motors)

There are two models the Elio would compete against—both three-wheelers. Aptera, reborn in Southern California last year, is seeking to bring its “never charge” solar car within the next year, at a $25,900 base price. And then there’s the ElectraMeccanica Solo, an $18,500 single-seater EV that, after some delays, is due to arrive this year with retail locations in Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington and Colorado.
⚡ Aptera on left 👈                    👉 ElectraMeccanica Solo on right

... ...

The company has made many promises over the years and generally speaking, has failed to deliver on most of them. Elio previously promised that it would employ 1,500 American workers by 2015—something Elio again reiterated in 2019, with a pledge of 90 percent North American content. ... ...

Elio stopped sending out regular weekly e-mail updates in November 2019, and prior to the Elio-E announcement it took down its previous blog and updates. Now it’s added a page about fleets that positions the Elio-E as a solution for the service and small delivery industry—a market that Arcimoto has gained some traction with. That page seems to suggest relationships with Grubhub, DoorDash, Geek Squad, Amazon, and others.

It’s noteworthy that Elio isn’t giving a projected arrival date for the EV . Will Elio deliver this time? This decade? Leave your comments below.

Geely Geometry EX3 ⚡ Electric SUV Priced Below $10,000

The Geometry EX3 electric SUV from Geely comes with a super low price tag.

“Some people are never sastisfied,” a friend of mine used to say. People are clamoring for electric cars that cost less, yet when manufacturers actually offer them, those same people complain they are too small, can’t drive far enough on a single charge, or don’t have gigantic interior touchscreens like the one available in the Mercedes EQS.

Those people conveniently forget that there are plenty of car buyers who don’t tow a camper, go on cross country road trips on a regular basis, or move household appliances from place to place each weekend. They just want a car that will get them to work on time, take the kiddies to soccer practice, and maybe go over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house once a year.

They also conveniently forget that entry level cars like the Hyundai Excel, Yugo, Daewoo Lanos, and Fiat 127 actually sold pretty well to people who wanted basic transportation instead of a status symbol that celebrates the joy of living a charmed life.

The least expensive electric car in Europe (excluding quadracycles like the Renault Twizy) may currently be the Dacia Spring, which sells for a touch less than $23,000 before incentives. The diminutive 3.7 meter long SUV has a 26.8 kWh battery, a range of 225 km WLTP, and seats 4 people. Keep those specs in mind while we tell you about the new Geely Geometry EX3.

🤠Meet The Geometry ⚡ EX3
Courtesy of Geely

Geely is hardly a household name outside of China, but the company likes to fly a bit under the radar. It owns Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lynk & Co, and the London Taxi Cab Company. In China, its domestic brand is called Geometry. This week, it introduced the EX3, a 4-meter-long electric SUV that comes with a 37.2 kWh battery, a range of 322 km NEDC, and room for 5.

The big news, though, is the price. In base trim, it sells for 59,700 RMB. Listen up, people: that equates to €7,900 or $9,200 — less than half the price of the Dacia Spring. But is it a real car? Yes, Virginia, it is. It comes with a 70 kW motor with 180 Nm of torque. It also has regenerative braking, a liquid-cooled battery pack, a digital instrument screen, a moderately sized touchscreen, and high-strength steel beams front and rear.

Sharp-eyed readers may notice a certain resemblance between the Geometry EX3 and the Volvo XC40 Recharge. That should come as no surprise, given that both cars come from companies owned by Geely.

Courtesy of Geely

Is that it? A decent 5 passenger electric SUV at a bargain price? Yes and no. The low price for a well equipped modern electric car is wonderful news for EV fans. But here’s the part that should cause heartburn in automotive boardrooms around the world. Geely says it is looking to export the car and other Geometry models “in due course.”

That will really set the fox among the chickens, eh? What will the anti-EV crowd complain about when perfectly good electric cars start selling for under $10,000? For those who say no one cares about such entry level cars, we have one thing to mention: the Hyundai Excel — a bare bones car that lit the fuse on Hyundai’s rise to the top tier of automobile makers. The Geometry is a much better car, which means the results could be even more spectacular.

Chinese car companies have just begun marketing their cars in foreign markets, but anyone who knows what happened when Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia trained their sights on US and European sales will know that history could easily repeat itself. 10 years ago, people laughed at Chinese-made cars that folded up like accordions in crash tests. They aren’t laughing any longer.

See several more pictures of the Geometry EX3 on Geely’s global website.

Ford’s Big ⚡ Electric Vehicle Investment 🤔

Ford Motor Company announced plans on Monday to invest $11.4 billion to accelerate their electric vehicle manufacturing, the single largest investment in the company’s history.

In a joint venture with its main battery cell supplier, South Korean company SK Innovation, the companies plan to build three ⚡ electric vehicle battery plants [along with a plant to produce ⚡ electric pickup trucks.

The factories in Tennessee and Kentucky are expected to start production in 2025 ::). The Tennessee manufacturing campus is designed to be carbon neutral and send no waste to landfills.

The company also plans to invest $525 million  to train technicians on how to service electric vehicles. According to Ford, the move will create 11,000 jobs and enable the company to produce more than a million electric vehicles per year.

Employees at the new plants will have the option to vote on whether they want to be represented by the United Auto Workers union.

Transportation is the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., at 30 percent. Speaking about the trend of auto companies investing in electric vehicle production, Gartner analyst Mike Ramsey told the New York Times, “All these companies are building battery plants because you have to have your own production if you’re going to make E.V.s in high volume. The fact they are spending billions of dollars means they’re saying: ‘There’s no turning back. We’re really going to do this.” (CNN, New York Times $, Tennessean, The Verge, Politico Pro $, NBC)

Why Does The 🦖New York Times Hate ⚡ EVs?

SNIPPET:
Scary Propaganda

🐍 Seely pours on the scary, scary news about electric cars. “Electric cars need to become more affordable. Battery range needs to increase sharply. Charging stations need to become as commonplace as gas stations. And the time it takes to charge an electric car needs to fall more in line with gassing up a tank.” Yeah, most of us know that.

It has taken 100 years to perfect the internal combustion engine, but the truth is, the EV revolution is proceeding much faster than that. New battery technology is making headlines weekly if not daily, EV charging infrastructure is growing rapidly and the time needed to charge an electric car is getting shorter. Perhaps Seely could learn a thing or two by reading CleanTechnica once in a while.

Instead, he trots out an assortment of EV bashers to spread more fear, uncertainty, and doubt. There is a link to another New York Times article from June of this year by Elaine Glusac describing in detail the gut wrenching dilemma of driving an electric car on Colorado’s back roads through the Rocky Mountains.

The country where all cars are becoming electric

The Norwegian government is one of the most forward-thinking in the world -- at least in terms of its transportation strategy. Norway has set the earliest target in the world for the phaseout of new petrol cars, in 2025. But the market is changing faster still.

In the first 8 months of 2017, petrol and diesel cars accounted for 25% of new car sales. Meanwhile, over the same period in 2021, this accounted for 4.93% and 4.73% respectively (for a comparable number of overall sales). If this trend keeps up, there could be virtually no demand for non-electric cars by this time next year.

Norway's secret was to offer tax incentives for EVs, but a recent study also found that even without incentives, EV cars are becoming cheaper.

Ten years ago, nobody could have imagined this.

But it’s not just cars that have gone ⚡ electric: it’s a network of buses, trains, and trams, plus lots of electric bikes.

Agelbert NOTE: 10 years ago was 2011. At that time, Elon Musk had already produced a successful ⚡ EV Sportscar and had a large factory producing the 2012 Tesla ⚡ Model S. He certainly DID foresee what is happening today, not just in Norway, but in many countries all over the world. That was (and still is), after all, what his ⚡ EV business model is all about . China, despite their having too many coal fired powerplants , is not far behind Norway in a massive transition to ⚡ EV transportation, by the way.

The worldwide transition to ⚡ EV transportation, including ⚡ land AND sea ⚡ vehicles, is what will finally rid us of the 🦖 Hydrocarbon Hellspawn 😈 Fossil Fuelers. They cannot survive without selling their polluting gas guzzler fuels to we-the-people. The sooner they go bankrupt, the BETTER!

Agelbert NOTE: Excellent video but there is one error a commenter correctly pointed out (see below).

Also, please note that this video is two years old already. Two Gigafactories have been built since then and a third is on the way. The Tesla Model 3 is now selling like hotcakes. At the time of this video Ford and VW had NOT gotten on the EV bandwagon. Now they have, BIG TIME.

Volvo Trucks Receives Order For 100 Electric ⚡ Semis

Volvo Trucks has begun delivering its electric ⚡ semi to Europe’s largest freight hauler.
SNIPPET:

Give Tesla all the credit in the world for getting the EV revolution 🦕 started, but the rest of the automotive universe isn’t waiting around for Tesla. News of the Tesla Cybertruck ignited a frenzy of interest in electric pickup trucks when it was announced. That level of interest resonated in corporate boardrooms all across America as first Ford, then GM, and finally Dodge announced that, yes indeed, they would offer electric  ⚡ pickup trucks, too!

First Mercedes ⚡ electric trucks rolled off the line today too. Mercedes is going electric for their short-haul trucks, and hydrogen for their long-haul trucks.

A lot happening in trucking, I am reading more about trucks nowadays than cars, it's a just a bit more exciting atm.

"The first series-production ⚡ eActros rolled off the production line today at the Future Truck Center of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth"

"Daimler Trucks is focusing on hydrogen-powered fuel-cells for the electrification of its vehicles for flexible and demanding long-haul transport."

Another large market is electric vans.

Amazon put in an order for 1,800 ⚡ electric Mercedes vans.

German auto giant Mercedes-Benz announced its largest order of electric vehicles to date Friday: 1,800 electric delivery vans for retail giant Amazon.

dbp934 > Mentos
Ok but can those H2 powered trucks go through places like:-
- The Mont Blanc Base Tunnel
- The Channel Tunnel
- The Gotthard Tunnel (on a train)
and probably more that don't come to mind at the moment.
If they are prohibited for very good reasons then why bother? 🤔

Tesla Model 3 SR+ Two Years Of Maintenance Costs (Tires, Locked Trunk, 12V Battery …)

We’ve had our Tesla Model 3 SR+ for a bit more than 2 years now. I recently had a service visit for a couple of things, but rather than write only about them, I figured it would be useful for people to see our full service history with the car. I’m going to go backward from most recent to least recent, since the recent stuff is more interesting. Here we go….

Opening Trunk :P

A few months ago, I went to open the trunk and it wouldn’t open. After a day of not getting it to open, and needing to get some tennis equipment out of it for my daughters, I realized I might be able to go through the back seat and open it from the inside. Indeed, that worked, since there’s a manual latch in the trunk door. The trunk then worked, so I figured it was just a temporary glitch.

At around the same time, the backup camera didn’t work a few times. But then it came back and worked like normal.

We were going to Europe for a month and a half to spend time with my wife’s family, so I didn’t want to mess with service appointments at the time, and everything seemed to be back to normal.

After we returned, though, within a couple of days, the trunk wouldn’t open again. And the camera acted up a few times just like before. I opened the trunk manually several times, but it wouldn’t start working correctly again, so I knew it needed service. I scheduled a mobile service visit and a few days later the ranger came and checked it out. He hadn’t seen this problem before but talked to a colleague who had seen it a few times in Texas. Here’s what it turned out the issue was:

There’s a wiring harness in the trunk door that carries wires from various things back there to the front (including from the cameras and trunk latch). If a wire or two gets damaged, things stop working. In such a case, the whole harness has to be replaced. Here’s a short video of me just showing that the trunk won’t open trying from either the touchscreen or the trunk itself:

This is not a mobile service task, and Tesla had to order a part before providing the service. Eventually, though, 3 weeks after I put in the initial service request, I had an appointment at the local Tesla service center and brought the car in for the harness to be replaced. It was all done under warranty, so at no cost to me, aside from the time.

Replacing Tires

New tires at nearly 17,000 miles and two years of ownership. Photo by Zach Shahan/CleanTechnica.

When the mobile service technician visited to look at the trunk, and also at a previous service visit when he came to replace the 12V battery (see below), he checked the tire treads and some other things and told me the tread level was low and should be replaced soon. Not wanting to bother with taking the car to a separate place for tires, and trusting that Tesla would give me a good deal since Tesla’s aim is to not make a profit on service and to treat customers well, I decided to just go with Tesla’s recommendations and not stress. I have since been told by another Tesla owner to just buy tires through Tire Kingdom and that I paid way too much. Next time I will shop around a bit more and have more faith in local tire shops….

In any case, after two years and fewer than 17,000 miles, I replaced all four tires at a cost of almost $1,700 ($1,671.64 👀 to be exact). Yikes. More than I expected.

It seems I’m on the worse end of tire wear and tear. I was told that the normal range is between 15,000 and 25,000 miles. I hardly ever drive on the Interstate and I drive quite calmly (see my Safety Score below), so I was surprised to be on the low end of this window. Though, I have been known to enjoy a good blast-off at almost every chance (red light) that I get. I’ll also admit that I’m almost 40 but do still often feel like a kid (when I’m not thinking about my bum knee or growing belly). Perhaps I am having too much fun. I have committed to trying to be a bit more calm at traffic lights. Sort of.

My Tesla Safety Score a week ago.
''

12V Battery Replacement

As I reported a few months ago, I had to have my 12V battery replaced just after 15,000 miles and nearly two years of ownership. The cost was $0 since it’s included under warranty. You can read more about all of that here.

Tesla Model 3 SR+ about to get 12V battery replaced. Photo by Zach Shahan/CleanTechnica.

Tire Rotation

After a few months more than one year of ownership, and 8 months before replacing the tires, I had the tires rotated by Tesla. That came at a cost of $35.00.

Cabin Air Filter Replacements

At the same time as the above-mentioned tire rotation, I had the cabin air filter replaced. The specific description from Tesla on the invoice is “A/C Odor Removal (Using Evaporator Foam Cleaner, Replace Cabin Filters).” The cost was $50.50 for parts and $39.75 for labor, so $90.25 in total.

That was the second time I had the cabin air filter replaced. The first time was a year before, and just a few months after buying the car. We bought the car right around the time Tesla implemented a software update to better lengthen the life of the air filter since in humid climates (like Florida), it was getting stinky too quickly. As a result of all of that, Tesla replace the filter as a complimentary service (no charge).

In Summary

So, in summary (and going from oldest to newest this time), in two years of ownership and 17,000 miles (actually, two years, two months, and 18,728 miles as I write this), I’ve had the air filter replaced twice ($0 goodwill service the first time, $90.25 the second), the tires rotated once ($35), the 12V battery replaced once ($0 under warranty), and all 4 tires replaced once ($1671.64). That comes to a total cost of $1796.89.

During the various service visits above, I also had them check out a few things that ended up being nothing or unidentifiable matters that went away (truly little things). Additionally, they refilled my windshield wiper fluid during service center visits and I’m yet to buy any myself.

I also spent $0 charging for almost two years of ownership, but a few months ago moved into a home with a garage and have spent some amount of money (I haven’t kept track) charging at home.

The focus of this article was Tesla service visits and costs. For more of a “long-term review,” see the full archives for that and see this article in particular: “16 Months With Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (Video Summary).”

Dozens Of Original Tesla Roadsters Lost In Gruber Motors Fire

SNIPPETS:

Over the weekend, tragedy struck again at Gruber Motors in Arizona. An electrical failure started a fire in their main service building, and managed to ignite a car’s lithium batteries before the fire department could arrive and put the blaze out, making it very difficult to save anything in the building. Sadly, there were at least 25 original Tesla Roadsters in the building, and they were totally destroyed.

... ...

Why Were There So Many Roadsters In One Place?

If you’re unfamiliar with Gruber Motors, you might wonder why there were so many original Tesla Roadsters in one place. The answer is that they’re one of the few facilities that can work on them. Yes, you can still get some limited work done at a Tesla service center, but if a major component fails, you’re in for replacing the entire component (like a battery pack). This can make a relatively minor problem cost tens of thousands of dollars to resolve , but Gruber’s team can break down something like a battery pack and repair it for a fraction of what Tesla would charge.

For some components, replacement modules simply don’t exist and haven’t been made for over a decade. In those cases, even Tesla can’t help the owner out. This is where Gruber Motors really shines, as it can repair and refurbish expensive components, making a repair possible at all.

As Teslas age, more and more of them end up at Gruber Motors for repair. You can learn more about the problems owners face with aging electric vehicles and the process of repairing them in this video:

Hertz To Buy 100,000 Teslas

Hertz will buy 100,000 Tesla Model 3s by the end of next year, the car rental company announced Monday. The major purchase, by the company that filed for bankruptcy last year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, was broadly seen as a significant step toward the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Hertz plans to partner with Tom Brady, the highly-successful, if controversial, NFL quarterback who was friendly with Donald Trump to promote its EV push.

Once the purchase is complete, EVs will make up more than one-fifth of the Hertz fleet. The purchase also pushed up Tesla's stock price, raising its market capitalization to over $1 trillion for the first time." , and we've only just begun to see rising global demand and interest," said Hertz interim CEO Mark Fields.
