How Electric ⚡ Vehicles Are 🎋 Better For Cities 🌞

January 22nd, 2020 by Jake Richardson

There’s a peculiar bit of 😈 anti-EV misinformation floating online made by 🦖 some
 commenters
that electric vehicles are no better for the environment because they use electricity made from 🦖 fossil fuels. Most of the electric vehicles in the US are located in California, where the energy mix includes solar power, wind power, hydroelectric, and geothermal. These forms of electricity are all clean and renewable.

Tesla ⚡ Model 3 Image credit: Kyle Field | Cleantechnica

🦕 Natural gas is used to generate electricity too, but California is headed toward 100% clean energy. The goal there is to be 100% carbon-neutral by 2045. If it is achieved, then electric vehicles in California will be running on clean electricity and producing zero emissions.

Imagine for a moment visiting Los Angeles and experiencing no air pollution from any vehicles. An air-pollution free Los Angeles might sound like a fantasy, but it could become a reality in just 25 years.

What is air pollution like in Los Angeles now with a huge number of gas-powered vehicles operating on freeways, highways, and streets? It’s very unhealthy. “Those living in areas with higher outdoor pollution, according to the study — which encompassed six major metropolitan areas including New York and Los Angeles — built up coronary-artery calcium at an accelerated rate of 20 percent. Such calcium buildup, a marker for coronary atherosclerosis, can lead to higher risk of heart attack and stroke.”

Heart attacks and strokes…it’s funny how the anti-EV folks don’t mention gas-powered vehicles are generating air pollution every day that damages our health.

The deleterious effects of air pollution don’t stop at heart attack and stroke risk though. There are many more. “About 141 million Americans live with unhealthful levels of air pollution, the report says, placing them at risk for premature death, lung cancer, asthma attacks, cardiovascular damage and developmental and reproductive harm.”

Even for the electric vehicles in states outside of California, some are running on clean electricity like in Oregon and the state of Washington where most electricity comes from hydropower and other renewables.

For cities and towns in the states that use a lot of coal like Wyoming, Montana, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia, there aren’t very many electric vehicles. The EVs that are being operated there are running mostly on electricity produced by fossil fuels, but they have zero direct emissions, which means the aren’t generating air pollution in towns and cities where people are. The air pollution they are linked to is generated outside the towns and cities, so they are better for urban centers.

Furthermore, not all the world’s EVs are in the US. Norway is one of the strongest EV adopters, and this country generates about 44% of its electricity from hydropower. Iceland generates 100% of its electricity from renewable sources and has been experiencing an EV surge. Eventually, this country’s vehicles might all be electric.

At times, Denmark and Portugal have generated 100% clean electricity as well. The world is trending toward more clean, renewable electricity, which is good news for the environment and human health.

In France, reportedly the goal is to have 7 million EV charging stations by 2025. This is great news because in Paris, air pollution is so severe that a research study compared breathing the air there to smoking cigarettes. For people who live in Paris year round, the study found that breathing the local air pollution is like smoking 183 cigarettes annually.

Replacing gas-powered vehicles in Paris with ⚡ electric ones would greatly reduce the amount of toxic air pollution in this city. Electric vehicles are a solution, not a problem. But Paris is not even the most polluted city in the world. Delhi, India has even worse air pollution, “By one estimate, breathing Delhi’s air for one day has the health impacts of smoking at least 25 cigarettes.”

In fact, seven million premature ☠️ deaths a year have been linked to air pollution.

⚡ Electric vehicles are an important part of solving this lethal problem — they don’t produce toxic emissions directly. If it was possible to replace the most polluting gas-powered vehicles with zero-emissions vehicles, the air in the most polluted cities would be immediately improved.

So, if anyone tells you that ⚡ electric vehicles are no better for the environment, tell them they’re not only better for the environment, they’re better for human health too.

Because of the urgency of climate change and its very negative impacts, the future belongs to clean, renewable electricity generation and ⚡ electric vehicles.

Shhh … Tesla ⚡ Model Y Production Has Started ✨

Shhh … Tesla ⚡ Model Y Production Has Started

January 29th, 2020 by Zachary Shahan

Tesla Model Y

Slipped into other news in Tesla’s fresh shareholder letter, and also mentioned briefly and without emphasis on today’s conference call, was the news that Tesla has started limited production of the Model Y. It was announced in a super quiet way, but this is the first official announcement regarding Tesla Model Y production starting in this quarter, let alone January.

CleanTechnica was first to report that Tesla Model Y production would begin in or near the first quarter of 2020. We wrote about that on October 15, 2019. The first time I saw anyone else report something similar was on December 3, 2019, when Deutsche Bank indicated in a research note to clients that it had gathered similar intel.

As I’ve noted previously several times, production ≠ deliveries. Previously, Elon Musk indicated that Model Y deliveries might start in the 2nd quarter of 2020. On the 3rd quarter conference call a few months ago, he said, “We’re also ahead of schedule on Model Y preparations in Fremont, and we’ve moved the launch timeline from fall 2020 to summer 2020. There may be some room for improvement there, but we’re confident about summer 2020.”

However, we then heard rumors in the past week or so of early buyers getting calls about potential delivery in February (if they buy the Model Y Performance) or March/April (if they get the Model Y Long Range).

Indeed, everything seems to be moving faster than expected. In today’s shareholder letter, Tesla wrote, “We will start delivering Model Y vehicles by the end of Q1 2020.” This has got to be the quietest announcement about such a gigantic product going into production and making its way to customer hands that I’ve ever seen. Nothing else comes close, in fact. The Model Y is expected to outsell the Model 3, Model S, and Model X combined — and the Model 3 is already one of the best selling cars in the USA and the #1 best selling passenger vehicle in some countries, the Netherlands and Norway. All I can assume is that Tesla doesn’t want too much attention on the Model Y launch 1) in case some unforeseen challenges arise, and 2) to not hurt Model 3 demand and sales in the short term.

Currently, the combined Model 3 and Model Y production rate in Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California, is ~400,000 vehicles per year. Tesla expects to somewhat slowly increase Model Y production capacity there, but that actually means increasing production capacity by 100,000 units by the middle of the year. “The ramp of Model Y will be gradual as we will be adding additional machinery in various production shops. After such expansions are done by mid-2020, installed combined Model 3 and Model Y capacity should reach 500,000 units per year.”

Over in China, Tesla didn’t provide timelines for this, but the company did say that it expects to produce at least as many Model Y crossovers and Model 3 sedans there.

The other major update regarding Model Y was regarding better range than initially indicated: “Increased Model Y all-wheel drive EPA range to 315 miles from 280 miles.”

We toyed with a Model Y forum almost a year ago when the small SUV was unveiled: TeslaModelY.Club 🌞. With production begun and deliveries around the corner, we’re going to start using that forum again now. If you’re interested in the Model Y or have special information to share about the vehicle, which we expect to become the best selling passenger vehicle in the world someday, we hope you’ll join.

Can’t wait for the Model Y? Prefer a Model 3 for its superior driving characteristics anyway? Feel free to use my referral code to get some free Supercharging miles with your purchase: https://ts.la/zachary63404. Or not. Always best to use the code of the owner who most helped you decide on a Tesla, imho.

You can also get a $250 discount on Tesla solar with that code. There is currently no use for a referral code when putting down a reservation for a Cybertruck or Model Y.

So glad they've all switched to understating every goal currently unknown progress.

Also loved how they talked up the the contributions of the whole tesla team!

Couldn't help but notice the financial guys plug for "hey, spend 4-10% front loaded diluting the company shares to pay down dept held and what is effectively negative interest rates..."
Yeah, no thanks.

Lastly, great to hear Elon is well rested. As a Veteran of old IT through dot-Com era, I've seen plenty of guys who've worked past breaking point. Glad to see he's successfully recovered from last years all out push. I hope he never pushes that hard again. It shatters your health, and this world needs him.

Remember that Musk has support from China. Nobody can ramp up production of a manufactured object, be it a car, a wind turbine or a solar panel, throughout the raw material supply chain from the mine to the plant and equipment manufacturing the end product plus profit guaranteeing scaled up marketing and distribution, faster than China.

The only "downside", from the view of Tesla corporation's bottom line, is that China now knows EXACTLY how a gigafactory is made and how it works...

Expect China to rapidly clone gigafactories for the purpose of manufacturing Chinese ⚡ EVs (i.e. Tesla ⚡ clones). Though some here may be uncomfortable with that, I welcome it because it will help kill 🦕 gas guzzler demand sooner. 👍

While maintaining profitability is sine qua non to a going concern like Tesla, the goal is a viable biosphere, not massive pecuniary profits. Tesla will eat each and every 🦕 gas guzzling manufacturer alive in the USA (and much of the rest of the world too). Barring a 💥 WWIII nuclear holocaust, Tesla will soon be on the Dow 30 and make Apple look like a Girl Scout cookie maker in comparison.

Tesla has won 👍, but China will always win in China 👍.

The ⚡ Hummer!
« Reply #618 on: January 30, 2020, 02:06:31 pm »

January 30th, 2020 by Kyle Field

SNIPPET:

General Motors will build the new ⚡ HUMMER EV at home in Michigan at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, which CleanTechnica just learned about in conversations with GM President Mark Reuss and other GM execs leading their electrification revolution. No word on production volumes or battery supply for the new ⚡ HUMMER EV yet, so we will surely have our ears to the ground for any new information about it as those are released.

The ⚡ HUMMER EV will be the first electric ⚡ vehicle from GMC when it arrives in Fall 2021 and ushers in what GMC is calling a “Quiet Revolution.” Gone are the days when loud, smelly, clunky motors were synonymous with power. Next-generation vehicles will silently destroy the 🦕 gasoline or 🦖 diesel vehicle next to them at the track or stop light, much like Tesla’s vehicles have been doing for years in certain segments.

Citroen Introduces ⚡ Ami, A €6,000 Electric Urban Transportation Vehicle 🌞

February 28th, 2020 by Steve Hanley

Citroen will start selling a €6,000 two-seat electric transportation module in France on March 30. Sales later this year will expand to Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, and then Germany, according to Tech Crunch. The new car is called the Ami, which is French for friend. Citroen fans will recall the company has sold several vehicles under that name in the past, all of them bare bones, no frills transportation devices for people on a strict budget. The new Ami EV is no different.

Citroen Ami ⚡ Electric Car Image credit: Citroen

Here are some of the details. The car is a 2-seater with a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor that can recharge in 3 hours using a normal (in Europe) 220 volt wall outlet. It has a range of 70 kilometers (42 miles) and a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph). Being short and narrow, it is easy to navigate through city traffic and easy to park when you get where you are going. Think of it as a weatherproof motor scooter with 4 wheels and no emissions.

With such limited performance, no driver’s license is required. People as young as 14 can drive one in France and as young as 16 in other European countries. It has a panoramic sunroof and the interior has a heater. The side windows pop out and up just like they did back in the 50s with the iconic Citroen 2 CV.

Pricing is intended to make the Ami EV competitive with public transportation. The car costs a pint-sized €6,000 including VAT or it can be purchased with just €2,644 down and a minuscule monthly payment of €19.99 for 4 years (both include VAT). The cars (if you can call them that) can also be rented through car sharing services for  €0.26 per minute.

“Individual, clean, urban — and bold” is how CEO Vincent Cobée described the Ami when it was unveiled in Paris recently, according to Electrive.  He suggested the Ami was inspired by the recent yellow vest protests in France and the Fridays For Future movement, describing it as the answer to social issues. “The Ami should be a real breakthrough in access to urban mobility,” Cobée said. “A solution that is as close as possible to new user habits. This outstanding idea was only a concept a year ago. We’re very proud that we’re turning it into reality today.”

Nothing about the Ami is ordinary. It can be ordered online and delivered to the customer’s home upon request, in which case a factory representative will bring the car to the new owner and spend 30 minutes or so going over how it operates and answering questions.

Citroen has also forged an alliance with Fnac, a French book and electronics retailer, and Darty, an electrical appliances retailer, to offer the Ami in their stores. The car will be showcased inside a 9-square-meter pop-up sales area in both stores. Test drives will be available nearby.

The car’s low price is made possible by eliminating frills. There are no roll-down windows, the front and rear fascias are interchangeable, and the company uses the same door on both sides. On 0ne side it opens forward and on the other side it opens toward the rear of the car.

Don’t look for the Citroen Ami in America. It is too small and too low powered to appeal to US shoppers. But it could be a huge hit with European teenagers looking for an upgrade from a bicycle or motor scooter. The epitome of the “form follows function” principle, the Ami could be as disruptive as the Tesla Model S, except at the lowest end of the market instead of the highest.

https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/28/citroen-introduces-ami-a-e6000-electric-urban-transportation-vehicle/

Agelbert COMMENT: I am a US shopper and the affordable 👍 Citroen ⚡ Ami appeals to 🌞 me. I am retired. I go nowhere but medical appointments and the supermarket. That means I NEVER travel more than 15 miles round trip on any given day during the entire year. There are MANY MILLIONS of us old retired geezers in the US who would LOVE to never have to visit a gas station or mechanic for any polluting gas guzzler reason whatsoevah.

That said, 🦖 Trump will NEVER allow the Citroen ⚡ Ami into the US. Therefore, vote 🦅 Sanders for a decent (and survivable) Renewable Energy 💫 Powered America. ✨🌻🌼

Tesla ⚡ Model Y Owners Manual Now Available 😀

Tesla ⚡ Model Y Owners Manual Now Available 😀

March 13th, 2020 by Johnna Crider

The Tesla Model Y Owners Manual is now available (grab it here) and gives you a great detailed look at the newest Tesla product that customers have been eagerly awaiting since it was launched last year. It’s 226 pages long.

It may seem trivial to some, but I find it really informative and interesting to dive into the owners manual. It details every part of the interior — such as the door-open button, the gear selector, and the scroll wheels on the steering wheel. Things that may seem common to many are new to those who are transitioning from a gas vehicle to an EV — and knowing how to get out of your car matters!

Model Y Owners Manual

The touchscreen overview comes with a warning — a reminder, really — for the driver to always pay attention to the road and traffic conditions when driving. Along with that warning is a quick overview of how to use the touchscreen.

A Tesla key fob next to two Tesla Hot Wheels.
Photos by Zach Shahan, CleanTechnica.

In the Keys section, Tesla goes over the three types of keys that access your vehicle —  Authenticated Phone (using Bluetooth to open your door), Key card, and Key fob. If you are wondering how to open the door to your new Model Y, it’s similar to the Model 3. Tesla has changed things up when it comes to opening car doors, and these changes add to a superior and futuristic vibe to the atmosphere of its vehicles.

The Model Y also has four types of airbags:

1. Knee airbag.

2. Front airbags.

3. Seat-mounted side airbags.

4. Curtain airbags.

In the diagram below, you can see the approximate areas where the airbags are.

The fact that Tesla’s Model Y Owners Manual is now available is vital since many Model Y owners will be receiving their new vehicles soon — starting today even! 🌞

Tesla Rewind: April 2012 — Tesla Roadmap, Aerodynamics, Vertical Integration, Major Shareholder Stock Dump

April 10th, 2020 by Zachary Shahan

SNIPPET:

Sometimes it feels like the Tesla Model S popped onto the scene yesterday. Sometimes it feels like it’s been decades. It was in fact nearly 8 years ago. I thought it would be interesting to look back at Tesla coverage back then to reflect on how Tesla has grown and matured as well as how media coverage of Tesla has morphed. Below are stories that showed up on the first page of Google search results for “Tesla” when locked into the April 2012 timeframe as well as one CleanTechnica highlight.

Agelbert NOTE: Pertinent comments:

Philip
In the Netherlands is the main reason to drive EV nothing more than fiscal! In specific people who drive a company car. Do the math yourself, ICE is taxed over a value of 22% of the cars value, an EV is taxed on a value of 4%. That expain why so many Tesla are being sold in the Netherlands in Q4 2019. Those rates will increase in 2020 to 8%, and in 2021 to 12% ... I look forward to see what will happen! I am from Belgium, I drive also a company car and we have also a fiscal benefit if we drive an EV. That was for me the main reason to order an EV, and yes I expect it is more fun to drive, and it will be more silent and good for the climate. But my pocket, that's what counts! And let's hope it will be delivered soon ... that damn virus 😷

Damien  > Philip
"But my pocket, that's what counts!" not the environment or other people's lungs... that's why the world is dying. The Northern Europeans demonstrating their selfishness as usual.

Harry Johnson  > Philip
Pardon my stupidity, how does a lower tax benefit the driver who is provided a car and reimbursed for gas? At least that’s how it works in the US, albeit in tiny total vehicle numbers.

agelbert > Harry Johnson
The US is an Oil company with an army. The way most everything "works" here is to destroy the biosphere for short term profit. So, using the US as an example of "what works" is wishful thinking, to put it mildly. What we have in the US is government of, for and by the 😈 "Might = Right" Social Darwinist intellimorons who could not do reality based biosphere impact cost benefit analysis if their lives depended on it.

It being that their, and our, lives actually DO depend on the 24/7 application of reality based biosphere impact cost benefit analysis , which they steadfastly refuse to do, the sad part is that these greedy,    arrogant bastards are dooming the rest of us with their ethically bankrupt ideology.

French Auto Sales Down ~90% In April, Electric Vehicles At 7.8% Share

May 4th, 2020 by Dr. Maximilian Holland

Passenger auto sales in France fell by 88.8% year on year in April. Though, the second half of the month did show signs of recovery. Plug-in electric vehicles took 7.8% market share, with favorite models being the Renault Zoe, Peugeot e-208, and Tesla Model 3.

Although the April figures are a huge drop-off from historical levels, AAA data did show signs of recovery in sales from the second half of the month, according to analysis by L’argus.

Plug-in electric vehicle sales were at 7.8% market share for April, with pure battery electrics (BEV) dominating over plug-in hybrids at a ratio of approximately 3:1. Overall powertrain market shares were fairly consistent relative to the average of previous months, despite the massive downscaling of total volumes. However, plug-less hybrids gave up some market share to pure petrol combustion, likely a temporary blip.

We don’t yet have detailed EV model sales data for April, since sales of multi-powertrain models like the Peugeot 208 and DS 3 Crossback are undifferentiated in the CCFA data. However, previous months have seen the Renault Zoe consistently take the top EV spot, averaging around 3,000 units per month (and enough to take the #6 position overall in the country’s auto sales).

Peugeot e-208

The Peugeot e-208 has been a close second to the Zoe, with around 2,500 sales per month in Q1, just outside the top 10 autos overall. The Tesla Model 3 saw average sales of around 1,000 units per month in Q1, making it the third best selling EV, which is notable for being in a premium segment almost double the price point of the Zoe or e-208.

The DS3 Crossback EV is regularly in the fourth position, at around 500 to 600 sales per month. All others consistently in the top 10 (Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona EV, Kia Niro EV, Mini Electric) are under 300 per month and experience variable volumes, likely due to supply shipments.

The clear trend for 2020 is that all EVs are growing rapidly, whilst combustion powertrains are declining. The current COVID-19 crisis is temporarily affecting volumes, but the underlying evolution in market share is still visible in the sales mix. I’m expecting plug-in vehicles to take around 10% of the overall market in France this year.
