Tesla Model 3

Agelbert COMMENT: In a sane country, the Federal Reserve would be tasked, for the good of society and the environment (SEE: "Common welfare" clause of the U.S. Constitution), with providing zero interest loans for EVs. They would also be tasked with covering all capital costs of long term leasing for EV manufacturers.

For example, the Tesla Model 3 EASILY lasts ten years. Lease payments for ten years, even in the most expensive LR Model 3, would be within the reach of most Americans.

But we do not live in a sane country.

Three years after Tesla started taking $1,000 reservations for its Model 3, Volkswagen is racking up similar orders for its upcoming ID 3 hatchback in Europe.

Perhaps not to the degree, sure. Tesla amassed 180,000 orders for its "affordable" long-range electric car in one day in the US, while VW took 10,000 first-day deposits on the day it opened reservations for the ID 3 hatchback.

DON'T MISS: VW names fully electric hatchback ID 3, starts taking deposits in Europe

Still, the advanced orders are a hopeful sign for VW, after Tesla, Nissan, GM, and other automakers got a head start in building long-range electric cars.

Volkswagen said the orders exceeded its expectations, and said that in some cases its computer systems couldn't keep up with the deposits.

The company is booking reservations for the first edition of the ID 3, the ID 3 1ST, which comes with the long-range 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack, as well as 2,000 kwh of free public charging at Ionity fast charging stations around Europe.

The 62-kwh battery is expected to give the ID 3 a range of 260 miles on the notably generous European WLTP driving cycle. A shorter range, 48-kwh, is expected to deliver closer to 200 miles.

VW says the ID 3 will go into production by the end of 2019—about six months later than its original estimate—and the first cars will be delivered in Europe in mid-2020.

Volkswagen has no plans to sell the ID 3 the US, though it does plan to import future electric cars based on the ID 3's platform to the US, starting with the ID Crozz later in 2020.

Getting back to Subhuman, he/she/it summarized on hypothesis like this: “This is Big Oil’s last chance to try and kill Tesla before it gets to the point of no return. Some would argue that we have already reached the point of no return but vested interest have not excepted that yet.”

There are a couple of things to consider with that inference. One is that Big Oil is directly or indirectly funding much of the Tesla smearing you see out there in the media. That’s possible. There are indeed oil-funded Tesla and EV smear campaigns. (This is not debatable.) But how much that drives the narrative is uncertain and is highly debatable.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Quote
“The pace of change and consumer interest in electrified vehicles is gathering real momentum and it’s essential we work across industry to advance the technologies required to deliver this exciting future,” said Jaguar Land Rover’s engineering director Nick Rogers.

Colorado is working to convert the state’s buses, delivery trucks and vans to electric vehicles.
Governor Jared Polis doubled down on the state’s commitment to increase electric vehicles and expand charging networks. In January, he updated Colorado's electric vehicle plan so state grants to replace aging gas and diesel trucks can only be used for EVs, not newer diesel or propane-fueled vehicles as previously allowed. The typical electric delivery truck will save around $2,000 a month since it requires no gas, no oil changes, and far fewer overall maintenance costs, according to a local powertrain manufacturer. Other efforts include a push to streamline zero-emission vehicle rules and a utility effort to make it easier to charge electric trucks. (Denver Post)

SNIPPET:

Contrary to what the anti-EV alligators would have you believe, plug-in vehicles produce lower emissions than dinosaur-burners over their full life cycles. That advantage is steadily growing as more and more electricity generation comes from renewable sources. A recent report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) found that costs for renewable energy technologies fell to a record low last year, and that cost reductions are poised to continue into the next decade.

In many parts of the world, renewable power is already the cheapest source of electricity. IRENA says that over 75% of wind and solar PV projects due to be commissioned next year will produce power at lower prices than the cheapest fossil fuel options, without government subsidies.

Agelbert COMMENT: YES! The death knell of the Hydrocarbon Hellspawn from lack of gasoline (and diesel) sales is music to my ears.

Don't forget that MANY homes are no longer heating with kerosene or heating oil because of Renewable Energy based electric heat. The 'electricity is less efficient for heat' crowd ALWAYS neglects to mention hydrocarbon pollution in their MORONIC energy math.

Ignore the planet killer IDIOTS who don't want you to use electric heat. OR, just tell them that destroying the biosphere by burning hydrocarbons is REALLY inefficient!

Shocker: Tesla Model 3 vs. Honda Civic — 15 Cost Comparisons Over 5 Years

SNIPPET:

When I got started on this analysis, I thought, “Well, looks like we finally have a car that is going to come out with a lower 5 year cost than a Tesla Model 3.” Nonetheless, I was super curious to see the results and see how close the Tesla Model 3 came to different Honda Civic trims. I did not expect that the Model 3 would beat the Civic on cost in several scenarios. Does it? Does it, really?

As before, all of my assumptions are included underneath the article and most are included in the charts. I try to use objective, respected, third-party sources for every factor possible. Because some factors vary so much from individual to individual, and even from state to state, I’ve run five scenarios for the Tesla Model 3 versus each of the three Honda Civic trims I chose for this analysis:

► High Gas Price, High Electricity Price

► Moderate Gas Price, Moderate Electricity Price

► Low Gas Price, Low Electricity Price

► High Gas Price, Low Electricity Price

► Low Gas Price, High Electricity Price

Of course, no financial value is put on the greater safety of the Tesla Model 3 or the fact that it’s approximately 10× more fun than a Honda Civic. Some things are simply priceless.

Sales Of Nissan e-NV200 ⚡ Electric Vans Up 200% In UK 👍

June 17th, 2019 by Steve Hanley

Electric car drivers are beset with range anxiety concerns. Even though they rarely travel more than 30 miles from home, there is still that occasional trip to the mountains, the beach, or the lake house. Most of us harbor a secret fantasy that we could wake up one morning, decide to chuck it all, climb in our car, and light out for California where the sun always shines.

Business people see vehicles quite differently. They know in the morning how far those vehicles will travel that day within a few kilometers. They want them to perform reliably and to do so with a minimum of fuel and maintenance costs.

e-NV200 interior cargo space

For lots of business owners in the UK, the Nissan e-NV200 is the perfect vehicle for their needs. Sales of the small delivery van, which is based on the LEAF architecture, are up 200% year on year in the UK, according to a Nissan press release.

Paolo D’Ettore, Director LCV Business Unit Nissan Europe, says “The success of e-NV200 truly demonstrates that we have the right product at the right time. The acceleration of fleet electrification — especially in city centers — is a challenge for our customers, so we recognize the need to work with them and provide the optimal ecosystem to support a smooth transition to electric vehicles.

“Thanks to its intelligent design and zero-emissions powertrain, the Nissan e-NV200 is the perfect tool to help businesses maximize their operational success and contribute to a more sustainable future.”

The e-NV200 is especially sought after in London, which imposes stiff financial penalties on gasoline or diesel powered vehicles that want to enter the most congested parts of the city. Operating costs of around 2 pence per kilometer are significantly less than those for conventional vehicles, which helps make the business case for choosing an electric vehicle.

In a survey of more than 500 UK small businesses conducted by Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi recently, 24% said they expect van fleets to be fully electric within a decade. One in three UK van fleet operators said business efficiency is their main motivation when adopting new technologies. 17% said that cost savings were an important factor, according to Automotive World.

Nissan has sold 20,000 e-NV200 electric vans throughout Europe since it was first introduced in 2014. Since the version with a 40 kWh battery was introduced last year, sales have jumped significantly. The e-NV200 is sold in 9 European countries and the UK.

Electric Towboat (ETB)

Introducing ⚡ electric propulsion system to the American inland waterways.

Proven reliability with a long experience of ABB electric propulsion. Now available for ⚡ Electric Towboats.

Inland Waterways: New solutions for a traditional market

The electric propulsion system is a proven solution for many different vessel types. Now ABB’s electric propulsion systems can help towboat owners to solve the modern problems of a very traditional market. Many owners are facing new market challenges such as new regulations, increased CAPEX costs for new builds, increased demand to improve OPEX costs and increasing requirements for vessel reliability. ABB has taken the time to understand the demands of this unique market and create flexible but reliable solutions.
New Regulations

New regulations have created a disadvantage to owners looking to build new vessels. The inland river fleet is aging and as old vessels leave the market new vessels must replace them. These new vessels must comply with new costly and complicated engine after-treatment systems. ABB’s electric propulsion systems give owners less costly alternatives to the less attractive standard diesel mechanical systems.  In addition ABB solutions will also significantly reduce the owners operating costs with regard to fuel usage and engine maintenance.

Towboat Operating Profiles Vary

ABB has reviewed over 500 push boat vessel profiles and learned that the true nature of a push boat is not 100% continuous duty. The market requires continues duty equipment due to the harsh environment and daily rigors but the vessel profiles vary greatly depending upon the push boat type, contract, and rivers traveled. ABB can work with owners and designers to now create an ABB ETB (Electric Towboat) design to better meet the needs of this varying operating profile. Today when a vessel propulsion system is designed it is fixed to one point, typically close to the 90% load, but with the ETB the propulsion system can be optimized to fit a wide operating profile. The ABB ETB vessel is optimized when in standby, when moving empty barges, when moving full barge load, up river, down river and even high water.

ABB ETB

The ABB ETB is a towboat with an ABB electric propulsion system. The ABB ETB is the perfect configuration of ABB products and ABB engineering. The ABB ETB is a customized system that includes the generators, propulsion motors, low voltage switchboards and automation. This vessel type allows owners to standardize engines through multiple horsepower vessels and due to the ABB automation vessel owners can plan engine maintenance on their own schedule. The ABB ETB increases vessel reliability due to the multiple prime movers; if an engine fails the vessel can remain in service at a reduced capacity. The ABB ETB can be designed as both a Z-Drive and conventional propeller vessel. As the diesel engine was the next generation of the steam engine, ABB ETB is the next generation of the towboat.

The advantages of the ABB ETB Towboat:

All ABB systems are available to support Remote Diagnostic System and Conditional Monitoring
High efficiency through a wider design point – significant reduction in fuel costs
Increased vessel reliability - redundancies eliminate single point failure removing a vessel from service
Lower engine maintenance requirements – reducing maintenance costs
Flexible design allows for more efficient vessel designs
Less vibration and no shaft lines to align
