Certainly EU citizens wanted access to less expensive electric bicycles, as the EU manufacturers average over US$5,200 for their products.

Secondary markets such as the USA had tended to receive EU regulation-compliant bikes historically as well for simplicity’s sake, but things are changing as markets grow.

The Portland University Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC) did a late 2017 summary of electric and motorized bicycle regulation across all US states and Canadian provinces. Only 42 of the 63 jurisdictions had regulations for electric bicycles, with the rest grandfathering them under low-speed motorized bicycles, and they are all over the map after that. Most require pedals, but some don’t. Speeds vary from no limits to 19 mph / 31 kph to 31 mph / 50 kph. Power output maximums vary from no requirements to 500 Watts to 1,500 Watts compared to the 250 Watts in the EU.

Only California is big enough at 40 million citizens with enough electric bicycle penetration by itself to represent an attractive market for differentiated products from major manufacturers in China and Taiwan. Its 20 mph and 750 Watt limit tend to dominate in the USA where EU regulated products aren’t offered instead.

India’s Mahindra Doubles Down On Electric Vehicles With New Factory

   

Mahindra’s Electric Mobility group is taking a leap into electric vehicles with the inauguration of its first Electric Technology Manufacturing Hub in Karnataka, India. The new facility is a tangible step forward in support of Mahindra’s Future of Mobility vision of providing Clean, Connected & Convenient vehicles for customers.

Mahindra ⚡ Treo

The facility will produce Mahindra’s first electric 3-wheelers, the Treo and Treo Yaari, under Mahindra’s +ME (Mahindra Electric) brand. The new 3-wheelers will start at Rs. 1.36 lakhs, including FAME subsidy (Faster Adoption and Manufacture of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles). Mahindra will also manufacture battery packs, power electronics, and motor assemblies at the new factory, which will increase the total output from +ME to 25,000 units per year.

Mahindra built the new factory with support from the state Government of Karnataka, which came out in force for the inauguration of the new facility. The new facility represents a Rs. 100 crore | US$14 million investment by Mahindra and represents a step into electrification for the company.

“As the pioneers of electric mobility in India, Mahindra is poised to be at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution while spearheading the endeavor through its range of clean mobility solutions,” Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd and Chairman Mahindra Electric said. “The manufacturing hub inaugurated today is the next step by Mahindra in the Electric Technology space to increase local value addition and bring affordable EV technology to redefine mobility in India.”

The new hub and factory is a sign that $19 billion Mahindra does see a future that is electric ⚡ for its vehicle division, and that in India, the revolution is being led by 2- and 3-wheel electric ⚡ vehicles. They are better suited for India’s crowded urban centers and their smaller size means they can be built for much more consumer-friendly prices.

“At Mahindra Electric, our aim is to bring about a monumental change in the way India moves by enabling more EV products on the road through our +ME technology solutions,” Mahesh Babu, CEO Mahindra Electric said. “Reiterating our strong faith in EVs we have now invested in technologies that are core to EVs and have set up manufacturing of battery packs, motors, power electronics etc. in our new facility at Bengaluru. The government of Karnataka has been extremely supportive of this initiative.”

Mahindra’s Treo 3-wheelers are built around a lithium-ion ⚡ battery pack that Mahindra says will require no maintenance while enabling 170 km per charge. The fully electric ⚡ Treo and the ⚡ Treo Yaari will feature smoother rides and no noxious tailpipe emissions compared to gas-burning 3-wheelers.

At launch, the vehicles will be available in a handful of select dealerships in Bengaluru (Bangalore), the capital of Karnataka state in India and Hyderabad. Mahindra has plans to expand the availability of the vehicles to other cites after the initial rush of the launch.

Video: Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai Construction Moving Forward

A new video has surfaced showing construction progress at Tesla’s third Gigafactory outside of Shanghai, China. Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, the new Gigafactory has already been the source of much contention. Self-proclaimed shorters of TSLA stock have visited the site and shared videos of fields of dirt, empty office buildings, and the like. (Sound familiar?)  


Meanwhile, Tesla is working towards standing up the new Gigafactory in record time, with a target of delivering the first Model 3s and Model Ys from the factory in 2020 (and some even speculate it could be in late 2019).

The property was given a flyover by a drone that shows the clearly fenced-off property with not much of anything happening yet on the abysmally saturated field that sits at the edge of a river.

The field has been cleared and leveled in preparation from construction and has just the very beginnings of construction starting in a small corner of the property. A small construction office has been assembled alongside a few containers and some construction equipment.


The video by no means provides certainty that Tesla is on track with construction, but it is exciting to see that things are actually starting to happen in Shanghai at the location of the new Gigafactory. It all starts with cleared, fenced property and an office from which to manage everything.

Tesla stated early on that it believed it would be able to stand up its first Gigafactory outside of the United States in record time, thanks to the lessons it learned at its first Gigafactory outside of Sparks, Nevada. The more stabilized plans will be turbocharged with an injection of Chinese ingenuity and construction expertise that is expected to see the massive factory come online in around 2 years.

The irony is that when the foundations are poured and the walls start going up, that is just the start of the work. The magic all happens on the inside where Tesla’s unique approach to battery assembly, automotive manufacturing, and testing put the magic of Tesla’s Grohmann Automation to practice. It’s the machine that makes the machine. The Alien Dreadnought that we were all warned about is coming to China, and that’s worth getting excited about.

They offer 3 trims all with a nominal 47kWh battery; the upper trim gets the top quality battery so the capacity and range are fixed at 47.6kWh and 365km; the lower two trims have a slight variation in capacity and range: 47.6-47.1kWh and 365-351km.

Samskip leads the way for Norway’s next generation of sustainable shortsea shipping

Press Release – Samskip takes the lead in ambitious initiative to develop autonomous, zero-emissions container ships that also compete on cost


Europe’s largest multimodal operator has been named lead partner in ‘Seashuttle’, a project seeking to bring emissions-free, autonomous container ships to market that also operate at a profit.

The announcement coincides with the award of €6 million of Norwegian government money to Project SeaShuttle to take forward development of two all-electric ⚡ ships slated to connect Poland, Swedish west coast ports and the Oslo fjord. The vessels will draw on state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cells for their propulsion power.
 
Seashuttle is one of six initiatives included in ‘PILOT-E’, a €100 million-plus scheme involving the Research Council, Innovation Norway and Enova, aiming to bring solutions for the climate-neutral industries of the future to market more quickly. Seashuttle funding came from four Norwegian ministries (Food and Fishing; Climate and Environment; Petroleum and Energy; and Transport and Communications).

“Samskip is delighted to take the lead in the project to develop next generation sustainable shortsea shipping,” says Are Grathen, MD Samskip Norway. “What distinguishes this project and will be key to its success is the combination of fuel and technology that will make it cost competitive with existing solutions. With our trusted project partners, we are convinced that such ambitions are realistic.”

Aspirations for sustainability are best encouraged by door-to-door services that provided cost-effective and scalable competition with truck-ferry options, feeding into a pan-European distribution network, he says. Automation of key shipboard activities would also bring cost savings. “Exporters increasingly seek lower and even zero emissions transport solutions, but they need to be assured on reliability, frequency, efficiency and cost effectiveness.”

Once operational, there is no reason why zero emissions ships should not target the 2,000 truck loads passing through Norwegian ports every day, he adds.

Other Seashuttle partners include logistics consultant FlowChange, technology group Kongsberg Maritime, hydrogen integrator HYON and Massterly, a Kongsberg Maritime/Wilhelmsen venture developing autonomous vessel solutions.

“Green shipping is a sector where Norway can be world leader in new and green technology,” says Anita Krohn Traaseth, CEO, Innovation Norway. “The conversion is underway, for example with many electric ferries. This year’s PILOT-E awards show that there are exciting plans to make shipping more environmentally friendly.”
 
“This is an important milestone on the long sailing to make the maritime sector emission free. We believe hydrogen and fuel cells are the future for large and long-distance ships, and we need projects like this in order to solve technical and practical issues, says Marius Gjerset, Technology Manager, Zero Emission Resource Organisation (ZERO).”
 
Final Seashuttle ports of call are yet to be determined, but it is already known that the fuel cell technology will convert hydrogen into power for propulsion in a process where electrolysis is envisaged as taking place in a Norwegian port. For the moment, the project envisages zero emissions during 20% of a round trip between Poland and the Oslo Fjord – sufficient for all operations in Norwegian waters. That proportion will grow as more stations fill hydrogen along the route.

The electric VW e-Crafter commercial van made its UK debut in December at the Milton Keynes EV Experience Centre. The 3.5 ton cargo van has 107 miles of range and uses a 35 kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be charged to 80% in 45 minutes or so. The e-Crafter was made for craftspeople (men and women), couriers, and for last-mile applications. It was reported the top speed has been limited to 55 mph, and that typically in urban settings such cargo vans may be driven 40-60 miles a day with many stops. Replacing older diesel vans with all-electric ZEV versions would obviously be very helpful in reducing unhealthy air pollution in cities. Kate Thompson, Head of Press and Public Relations at VW Commercial Vehicles UK, answered some questions for CleanTechnica.

Coming To America In 2019 — Compliance Cars Only  :P

Note: A version of this article was published in the second half of an article last week. We rearranged several things and wanted to highlight it separately this weekend, but don’t presume you’ve contracted deja vu if you read the first article.

The European market is about the same size as the US market, ~17 million vehicles. On average, US electric car incentives are better ($7,500 federal tax credit + local incentives in USA beats most European incentives, such as a €4,000 rebate in Germany).

In Europe, however, the number of new fully electric cars in 2019 is nearly twice as high as in the USA, and the models in this article will sell 2 to 10 times better in Europe. The difference is a sales channel that is better able and willing to sell electric cars. I explore this in more depth on the bottom of this article.

In 2019, a dozen new fully electric cars and SUVs are coming to the USA market. Well, they are not coming to all states — many will be what are called “compliance cars.” Let’s take a look at these electric cars and SUVs briefly first.

Agelbert COMMENT: I recognize and agree, in part, with this quote from the article:

What makes me scratch my head in regard to battery production is the fact that internal combustion engine manufacturing is a giant monstrocity that is far more complex than battery manufacturing. Battery production can be scaled up 4 or 5 times as fast as engine manufacturing. True, electric motors are often all that is compared with crapmobile engines, but the battery pack is more of the IT for an EV than the electric motor, as far as production.

Please do not tell me that making batteries is more demanding or difficult to scale up than making crapmobile engines. It's child's play in comparison.

Some years ago I studied the gasmobile engine supply chain from the mines to the vehicle to the replacement parts to the junkyard, which has, regrettably, a VERY small amount of recycling involved.

TWENTY YEARS is the back of the envelope life of one of these engines. IOW, the whole gas crapmobile engine infrastructure can be replaced in two decades.

Battery pack manufacturing is much simpler. True, the battery packs plus the electric motors and the electronics that become the heart of an EV must be viewed as a unit, even as a gasmobile engine, cooling, exhaust and fuel system is.

BUT, electric motors and associated electronics do not have any production constraints at present. They can certainly be made in the same factories that now make gasmobile engines. But, they aren't. 👎

So, we are left with the battery package "production constraints". I maintain that, unlike the gasmobile raw material supply chain (mining to junk) life cycle, the battery industrial infrastructure can be built up in less than five years. PLUS, the total life cycle of battery packs and electric motors and the associated electronics, as a unit, is easily 40 years, not just 20 like gasmobile engines are.

If you think the gasmobile engine makers are not aware of this, you are kidding yourself. They KNOW that their pet profit providing activity, though ruinously polluting, is the PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE of gasmobile engines. 😈

EV systems, lasting at least TWICE as long, threaten the beloved "planned obsolescence" (polluting) gravy train.

So, the gasmobile makers, with a lot of help from their Fossil Fuel Fascist 🐉🦕🦖 pals, fight the EV revolution tooth and nail.  >:(



This is stupid. It's time to STOP this idiotic love affair with planned obsolescence, that began in the early 20th century as a method to keep factories going full tilt all the time. It is TIME to realize that consuming for the hell of it is STUPID. It is TIME to realize that Madison Avenue has sold we-the-people a bill of goods in regard to EVERYTHING we "think we need" to transport ourselves, eat, wear, shelter and sleep in, even if the greedballs among us do not want to admit it. 🐵🙉 🙊

It is TIME to recognize that GREED IS BAD for the biosphere in general, and humans in particular.

BUILD the Battery factories right where all those gasmobile engine factories are! Phase out gas crapmobile engines in two decades!

You have the supply chains from the mines THERE ALREADY for any and all raw materials you use. You will need FAR LESS raw materials than before. You will learn how to reduce polluting mining to next to nothing through recycling ALL battery, electronics and electric motor EV components.

OR, you can just keep being GREEDY (i.e. STUPID) and cause us all to choke on our garbage.

ABB to power Iceland’s first electric ⚡ ferry

Press Release – ABB – New electric ferry to operate on an Icelandic route known for its harsh weather conditions will benefit from efficiency and sustainability enabled by ABB’s technology.

ABB will supply integrated power and electric storage solutions to the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s new ferry that will take 3,600 annual trips in the rough waters between Landeyjahöfn on the mainland and the Westman Island, covering 13 km in about 45 minutes.

The 70m-long ferry, with a capacity of 550 passengers and 75 cars, is designed by Polarkonsult and is due for delivery from the Crist S.A. shipyard in 2019. The vessel will feature a large battery pack (3000kWh) and is designed to operate in a fully electric mode for most of time, with onshore charging in both harbors. During particularly challenging weather conditions, when the consumption of battery power may exceed the available energy, the ferry will utilize its diesel-electric generator set.

The new ferry will replace the 1992-built MF Herjólfur in line with Iceland’s incentives to promote electric modes of transportation. With 80 percent of Iceland’s energy coming from non-fossil resources, led by hydropower and geothermal energy, the newbuilt vessel will be well positioned to support Iceland’s sustainability goals.

“Opting for ABB’s electric solutions allows the vessel to meet design constraints that initially seem in conflict: it is optimized for cleaner operation and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, whilst power is sufficient to navigate some very hazardous waters safely,” said Sigurdur Gretarsson, Director of Maritime Division, Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

ABB’s power distribution system Onboard DC GridTM will ensure the high efficiency of the new ferry by allowing the batteries to connect directly to the DC link, which helps avoids losses of power during charging and discharging. Additionally, the system can allow for variable speed operation of the diesel engines, which results in reduced fuel consumption.

The scope of ABB supply also includes generators, transformers, switchboards, the Power and Energy Management System (PEMS) and the Energy Storage Control System (ESCS). The ferry will be connected to ABB Ability™ Collaborative Centers Infrastructure. This network uses remote equipment monitoring and data analytics to enable remote technical support, as well as predictive maintenance and planned interventions.

Crucial to the supporting infrastructure shoreside is the shore power connection delivered by ABB to recharge the battery with a power of 2500kW while the ferry is in the dock. On average, it will take about 30 minutes to recharge.

“Selection of ABB’s technologies for a vessel operating on such a tough route, where the water depth is sometimes limited to 4.5 meters, but wave heights can reach 3.5 meters, sets a new benchmark for battery power on board a ship,” said Juha Koskela, Managing Director, ABB Marine & Ports.  “In line with our vision for electric, digital and connected shipping, this project demonstrates how system integration – whether on board the ship or between the ship’s crew and shoreside expertise – is a key success factor for vessel management.”

The new ferry will not only reduce the environmental impact, but also improve the regularity of the connection. Previously, during rough weather, the ferry operating the route would travel to an alternative harbor to dock safely, extending the sailing time from 45 minutes to close to 3 hours and causing motion sickness in passengers. The new ferry will be able to enter the destination harbor in challenging weather conditions most of the time, with the rare exception of particularly rough seas.
