VW sees China as leading market for E-cars

Volkswagen AG is increasing its electric vehicle offerings and is looking to become the leader in China’s fast-growing e-car segment, Herbert Diess, VW’s passenger car brand chairman, said in an interview with Rebecca Eisert and Franz Rother in WirtschaftsWoche.

Rejecting claims that VW was lagging behind in e-mobility, Diess said VW currently offers five electric models and had sold some 100,000 e-cars worldwide to date    .

The automaker has become the biggest seller in Norway, the world’s most developed electric car market, and it is looking to lead in China, which it expects to become the leading e-car market, Diess said
.

VW will unveil a new concept car in the coming weeks and introduce more e-cars by 2020.

By chance have you heard from the Porsche side of the family tree about
their 1st Fully Electric Hot Rod, the Mission E.

Published on May 29, 2016

In presenting the Mission E at the IAA in Frankfurt, Porsche is introducing the first all-electrically powered four-seat sports car in the brand's history. The concept car combines the unmistakable emotional design of a Porsche with excellent performance and the forward-thinking practicality of the first 800-volt drive system.

Key specification data of this fascinating sports car: four doors and four single seats, over 600 hp (440 kW) system power and over 500 km driving range. All-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, zero to 100 km/h acceleration in under 3.5 seconds and a charging time of around 15 minutes to reach an 80 per cent charge of electrical energy. Instruments are intuitively operated by eye-tracking and gesture control, some even via holograms – highly oriented toward the driver by automatically adjusting the displays to the driver's position.

Competitors are the #Tesla Model S, Mercedes E-Class, Mercedes S-Class, Mercedes GLE, Mercedes, Mercedes GL, Mercedes G, #BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW X5, BMW #i8, BMW #i3, #Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, Audi Q5, Audi Q6, Audi Q7, Audi #Etron, Audi electric SUV, #Volvo XC60, Volvo XC90, #Lexus LS450h, Lexus GS, Lexus LX, #Infiniti Q70, Infiniti QX70, #Acura RL, Acura RLX, #Jaguar XF, Jaguar XJ, Jaguar F-Pace, Jaguar XE, #Cadillac CTS, Cadillac ELR, cadillac CT6, #Genesis, #AstonMartin, #Porsche #Panamera, #Lincoln #MKS, Lincoln #MKC, Lincoln MKZ, #LandRover Discovery Sport, #LandRover Discovery, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover, #Chevrolet Volt, Chevy #Volt, Nissan #Leaf, Kia #Soul EV, #Honda Fit EV, Chevrolet #Spark EV, Chevy Spark EV, Chevy #Bolt, Chevrolet Bolt, Toyota #RAV4 EV. Drive system: over 600 hp with technologies from endurance racing

The drive system of the Mission E is entirely new, yet it is typical Porsche, i.e. proven in motor racing. Two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) – similar to those used in this year's Le Mans victor, the 919 hybrid – accelerate the sports car and recover braking energy. The best proof of a Porsche is 24 hours of top racing performance and a 1-2 finish. Together the two motors produce over 600 hp, and they propel the Mission E to a speed of 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and to 200 km/h in under twelve seconds.

In addition to their high efficiency, power density and uniform power development, they offer another advantage: unlike today's electric drive systems, they can develop their full power even after multiple accelerations at short intervals.

The need-based all-wheel drive system with Porsche Torque Vectoring – which automatically distributes torque to the individual wheels – transfers the drive system's power to the road, and all-wheel steering gives precise, sporty steering in the desired direction.

This makes the Mission E fit for the circuit race track; its lap time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife is under the eight-minute mark.

EVs Can Meet Most Daily Travel Needs

Relying on a single charge, today’s electric vehicles could replace 87 percent of daily car travel in the United States and cut gasoline consumption by 60 percent. Using the 2013 Nissan Leaf as the base for their calculations, researchers at MIT analyzed driving patterns and battery capacity and found that “range anxiety” -- fear that a car’s battery will die without timely access to a charging station -- is overblown.

If battery technology improves as expected, electric vehicles could replace 98 percent of existing vehicles by 2020.

Deutsche Post DHL Group pushes e-mobility – 2,000 electric vans until end of the year – carbon free parcel delivery now also in Bochum

8/17/16, 2:00 PM -

With 1,000 electric vans Deutsche Post DHL already operates the biggest electric fleet in Germany. Now in Bochum carbon-free parcel delivery was started with 24 electric StreetScooters, that are manufactured by the logistic company itself.

Deutsche Post DHL Group has started carbon-free parcel delivery in Bochum, Germany, beginning with the deployment of 24 new StreetScooters. These electric vehicles are produced by a Group subsidiary in Aachen, Germany and custom-built according to the specific requirements of parcel delivery personnel. While carbon-free parcel delivery in Bochum is initially limited to the city center, StreetScooters will be deployed to other parts of the city as well by the end of the year. A total of 65 vehicles are expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by some 195 tonnes. They are all powered by 100 percent renewable electrictiy. In 2017 Deutsche Post DHL Group will expand its carbon-free parcel delivery to all of Bochum.

2,000 StreetScooters by the end of this year

“Along with speed and flexibility, environmental protection is a major focus area when it comes to parcel delivery. Our StreetScooters allow us to provide parcel delivery that is quieter and more environmentally friendly and thus more responsive to the interests of customers and local residents. We’ll start in Bochum and then expand to other cities as well. By the end of the year we plan to deploy over 2,000 StreetScooters –the largest e-mobility project thus far in Germany,” says Jürgen Gerdes, CEO of the Post e-Commerce -Parcel division at Deutsche Post DHL Group.

State Minister of Economic Affairs Garrelt Duin: “I am pleased about this initiative for three very good reasons. First it demonstrates that an NRW-based company –Deutsche Post DHL Group –is driving innovation in the area of electro-mobility and sustainable logistics. Second, carbon-free delivery is an important contributor to cleaner cities –today in Bochum and tomorrow in other cities as well. And third, this is all made possible with the StreetScooter, a vehicle developed and producted in Aachen.”
A more climate friendly city

Thomas Eiskirch, mayor of Bochum: “I am very pleased that Deutsche Post DHL Group will be providing carbon-free parcel delivery in Bochum. This makes Bochum the largest city in Germany in which every DHL parcel will be delivered carbon free via electro-mobility. The gradual transition from diesel vehicles to electric vehicles supports us in our transition to a becoming a more climate-friendly and overall environmentally-friendly city. Soon Bochum can boast one of the largest Streetscooter fleets in Germany. Bochum is the city for putting innovative ideas into practice.”

37 charging stations in Bochum

After charging overnight at Deutsche Post DHL Group delivery bases in Bochum the StreetScooters will be loaded with parcels in the morning before departing on their daily delivery routes. By late afternoon the electric vehicles will return to their bases, where they will be charged for the next day using green electricity. In the project’s initial phase Deutsche Post DHL Group will install a total of 37 charging stations in Bochum.

Since November 2015, Deutsche Post DHL Group has also offered its GOGREEN business customers in the Ruhr region the chance to support the use of electric vehicles throughout the region. This now applies to Bochum as well: the more customers choose Deutsche Post DHL Group’s GOGREEN services to send their items, the greater the Group’s the investment in electro-mobility for regional delivery. Tesla touts speed and driving range with new upgraded battery

By Alexandria Sage and David Shepardson | SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON

Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA.O) crowned itself the maker of the world's fastest production car on Tuesday, saying a new version of its Model S all-electric sedan can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in just 2-1/2 seconds.  :o  ;D

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said the company will offer a larger upgraded battery pack for performance versions of its Model S and X vehicles that will extend range, while also allowing for super fast acceleration.

Tesla has long laid claim to bragging rights in the highly competitive luxury car market. But Tuesday's news is unlikely to change the equation on a host of challenges the company faces, from production and finances to regulation.

The new 100 kilowatt hour battery pack means the high-end version of the Model S sedan, called the P100D, will be the world's fastest accelerating car in production, the Silicon Valley automaker said. The new battery pack is also available for the performance version of the Model X sport utility vehicle.

The Model X is already the quickest SUV ever, Tesla said. But with the 100 kWh battery pack, it said the Model X P100D -- as the new performance model is known -- will now accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-97 kph) in 2.9 seconds.

The new battery also extends the driving range of the vehicles, taking the performance version of the new Model S beyond 300 miles (482.8 km)   , Tesla said.

Musk said that meant a driver could now travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles in temperate weather without recharging.

"These are very profound milestones and I think will help convince people around the world that electric is the future," said Musk on a conference call with journalists.

After rising more than 2 percent before Tuesday's announcement, Tesla shares pared gains to end the day at $224.84, up less than 1 percent.

Tesla said owners who had ordered a so-called Model S P90D Ludicrous but had not yet taken delivery could upgrade to the 100 kWh pack for $10,000, while existing owners can upgrade for $20,000 because the old pack must be recycled.

The electric car maker is laying the groundwork for a controversial buyout of SolarCity Corp (SCTY.O), while it also prepares for next year's launch of its high profile Model 3 mass-market vehicle.

SolarCity agreed to Tesla's $2.6 billion offer to buy the solar panel installer earlier this month, clearing one obstacle toward Musk's ambitious goal of creating a carbon-free energy and transportation company.

A filing on Tuesday showed that Musk is buying over half of a $124 million bond offer by SolarCity. It appeared to be the first time the billionaire entrepreneur has directly purchased the so-called "solar bonds" although SpaceX, his rocket and space transport services company, has bought them in the past.

In May, Tesla said it was stepping up production plans for its upcoming Model 3 mass-market sedan and would build a total of 500,000 all-electric vehicles in 2018, two years ahead of schedule, but it warned that spending will ramp up as well.

Model S and X vehicles with the upgraded batteries will help fund the more affordable Model 3 still in development, Musk said. The performance versions of the S and X without the new battery currently start at $108,000 and $115,500, respectively.

"Of course this is an expensive car. But it's very important to bear in mind that is what it's paying for, the Model 3," Musk said.

Tesla has been under investigation from U.S. safety regulators following a fatal crash in Florida earlier this year involving its drive-assistance feature known as Autopilot.

In his comments to reporters, Musk said a software update of the feature is nearing completion, adding that it will result in "material improvements in the autonomy of the car."

Tesla acknowledged that the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder with gasoline engines were faster than its new high-end S and X models. But Musk said those were both million-dollar, two-seater specialty cars that cannot be purchased new today.

If Tesla Model 3 Delivers, “Gas Vehicles Are History,” Gasoline & Automotive Services Dealers Of America Exec Says

August 29th, 2016 by Zachary Shahan

SNIPPET:  ;D

No doubt about it, many of us EV enthusiasts have been blown away by the Tesla Model 3 and believe it’s the car that is really going to break the gasoline auto industry’s back. But we’re just EV enthusiasts, right? Treehuggers, tech heads, climate alarmists, and people obsessed with breathing clean air — that’s who we are, right?

Okay, we can throw in gearheads now too, since electric cars absolutely crush gasmobiles in acceleration and many a gearhead is now in love with them. And I guess we can throw in anybody who loves scaring the crap out of their passengers as they skillfully effortlessly step on the pedal without notice and with full force.

But, again, this is still just a niche portion of society. Maybe we’re all just crazy enthusiasts and don’t have a clue what the mass market wants.

In a new Wall Street Journal article, however, a striking quotation jumped out at CleanTechnica reader Karl Graves, who highlighted it and passed it on to me. Maybe it didn’t come from Grandma Gretchen, but it did come from the executive director of Gasoline & Automotive Services Dealers of America, Mike Fox. Here’s the beauty (which is a mix of paraphrasing from author Chris Mims and the straight words of Mike Fox):

Quote
“If Tesla can deliver on its current promises with the Model 3, says Mr. Fox, ‘gas vehicles are history—it’s horse and buggy days.’ "

Wowza. That’s one of the most “Tesla fanboy-ish” statements I’ve seen … and it’s from the executive director of Gasoline & Automotive Services Dealers of America!

Of course, auto industry execs must already know this (otherwise, they are in extreme denial), and they must be thinking more and more that Tesla is set to deliver.

The 'Tesla of buses' just made a big move to eliminate diesel buses forever  ;D

Danielle Muoio

 Sep. 12, 2016, 12:24 PM

Chances are, you haven't heard of Proterra.

The Silicon Valley-based start-up has one focus: to eliminate the need for a diesel bus, forever. It's something the company has been working quietly on since 2004, and has made moderate progress since. It sold its first three, all-electric buses in 2009, ramping up sales marginally throughout the years since.

Proterra started hitting its stride a bit in 2015 when it sold 62 buses across 12 different transit agencies. But with a nominal range of 146 miles, a mark below many electric cars, widespread adoption hasn't been feasible.

"The first generation of the long-range vehicles we brought out wasn’t good enough for the market," Matt Horton, Proterra's vice president of sales, told Business Insider. "It just couldn’t do all of the routes out there, and frankly, there aren’t any electric buses out there that can today."

But Proterra unveiled a new version of its bus Monday it says is finally good enough for the market: a newly designed all-electric bus that can operate a route for an entire 18 hours — the same as a diesel bus.

Challenging Tesla's range

Proterra's Catalyst E2 is 40-foot long bus with a range of 350 miles under typical test track conditions. That's a big deal, considering Tesla only recently announced a battery upgrade for its Model S and Model X Ludicrous options that can achieve 315 miles of range — making it the first electric car on the market to exceed 300 miles of range.

To get that kind of range, Proterra worked on improving its battery tech and designing a bus that can accommodate the extra weight put on batteries for two-and-a-half years.

"If you take a traditional steel bus and just start dumping batteries on it, that bus is going to get really heavy really quick," Horton said of the decision to design a new bus entirely from scratch.

The new bus body is made of a carbon fiber composite, allowing it to remain lightweight, but durable. Proterra, which makes its own batteries in its Silicon Valley office, improved energy storage and put most of the batteries "underneath the body of the bus so it helps us keep it very, very low center of gravity," Horton explained.

That innovation has resulted in a bus that fits 77 passengers and can pack 660 kWh of energy to drive 350 miles on a single charge. On a closed track, which doesn't mimick the difficulty of urban driving, a Proterra bus with just a 440 kWh battery achieved 600 miles on a single charge.

But ranges are tricky to talk about, especially when it comes to buses, because range is affected by a variety of factors like constant braking, temperature, and the twists and turns of city streets. That's why Horton is sure to note that a 600-mile range isn't achievable in a route setting. However, the battery tech is good enough for the bus to run the full 18 hours transit operators need, the compamny said.

At night, the bus can get topped up using a typical charging station.

Replacing all diesel buses
The Proterra bus will be fully functional soon, with the first deliveries arriving in Foothill Transit in California in early 2017.

Horton said the start-up has customers in 15 states across the country and that it's pre-sold over 300 buses to-date. By the end of 2017, all of the buses will be fully operational.

Quote
"This is the first time that an electric vehicle has been brought to market that, on a truly no compromise basis, is going to replace all the fossil fuel vehicles in its category ",
Horton said.

General Motors Commits to Run on 100% Renewables by 2050

By Climate Nexus

General Motors committed to power its operations in 59 countries with 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.

The Detroit-based carmaker, whose total electricity demand for operations was nine terawatt hours last year, said it saves $5 million annually from renewable energy use. Earlier this week, GM revealed that its 2017 Chevy Bolt EV has a range of 238 miles per charge, outpacing Tesla's Model 3 by 10 percent.

Poland aims to have 1 million electric cars on its roads by 2025

Poland aims to have 1 million electric cars on its roads by 2025 as it seeks to cut carbon emissions from transport and will offer tax and other incentives, the energy ministry said on Tuesday.

The country is one of the biggest polluters in Europe as it has maintained coal-fuelled power stations as its major source of energy. Some Polish towns, especially in the south, also choke in smog due to traffic fumes and coal burning in homes.

"The project will contribute to improving the environment in our country," deputy energy minister Michal Kurtyka told a news conference.

The ministry said that by 2018 it wants to introduce new laws that would regulate the development of electric cars, launch special funds to help start production and create the prototypes of Polish electric cars.

Last week Poland's four biggest power producers - PGE, Tauron, Enea and Energa - said they plan to set up a company, ElectroMobilityPoland, to promote the use of electric cars although it is unclear whether they would actually make the cars.

"We would like this technological breakthrough to take place to the advantage of Polish entrepreneurs," Kurtyka said.

There are few electric cars in use in Poland currently. To promote their use the energy ministry said it planned to introduce tax relief for electric car owners as well as subsidies for the first 100,000 cars.

Germany and some other European countries have introduced electric car discount schemes to promote sales.

Poland's plan is also a response to the country's issues with power production at night. Big power stations cannot be switched off during the night, when demand is much lower than during daytime hours, so the electricity produced at night is wasted.

Encouraging electric cars owners to charge their vehicles at night would boost demand.

"The aim is to switch the tariffs system so that this night valley could become a source of energy for electric cars," Kurtyka said.

Poland's ruling conservative Law and Justice party promotes coal as the basic source of energy and has taken action to boost demand for coal, which it has in excess, to help its troubled mining firms.

BMW Set to Roll Out Electric Mini, X3 to Counter Mercedes Push
by
Elisabeth Behrmann

CEO Krueger says electric models will be ‘competitive’

While rivals stuck in ‘phase one,’ BMW entering ‘phase two’

September 30, 2016 — 10:11 AM EDT Updated on September 30, 2016 — 10:11 AM EDT

SNIPPET:

BMW AG will roll out the first battery-powered model of its urban Mini brand as part of a broader push to make electric cars more mainstream and counter ambitious plans from rivals.

The new Mini is set to hit the market in 2019 and will be followed in 2020 by a battery-powered version of the BMW X3 sport utility vehicle, Chief Executive Officer Harald Krueger said Friday in an interview. The variant of the popular X3 would push into the heart of BMW’s portfolio, signaling the company sees the technology as ready for the mainstream after bundling previous green-car offerings under the “i” subbrand. Both new electric models would have “competitive” driving ranges and  prices, Krueger said.

No Combustion-Engine Cars Sold in Germany After 2030, Parliament Says

Dan Zukowski

On Jan. 29, 1886, Carl Benz—who had invented the first stationary gasoline engine seven years earlier—patented a "vehicle powered by a gas engine," which he had built in Mannheim, Germany. By 2030, the country may ban his invention.

The world's first automobile, invented in 1886. Mercedes-Benz (picture at article link)

Germany's Bundesrat, its upper house of parliament, passed a bipartisan resolution calling for a ban on sales of new vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, which includes both gasoline and diesel.

"If the Paris agreement to curb climate-warming emissions is to be taken seriously, no new combustion engine cars should be allowed on roads after 2030," weekly news magazine Der Spiegel quoted Green Party lawmaker Oliver Krischer as saying.

The shockwaves from this action, reported over the weekend, haven't quite hit the global auto industry or German manufacturers just yet. Germany has one of the largest automotive industries in the world, and it is the biggest industrial sector in Germany. Automobile manufacturing and related businesses employ 774,900 German workers and account for one-fifth of German industry revenue.

The country is also Europe's top automobile market, and U.S.-based manufacturers do big business there as well. General Motors sold 244,000 vehicles in Germany in 2015, while Ford is on track to sell 280,000 vehicles this year. The Ford Mustang is the most popular sports car in Germany. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles sold 90,000 vehicles there last year, with its U.S.-built Jeep brand growing strongly.

The company that Carl Benz started, today's Mercedes-Benz, is investing $1.1 billion in battery production and plans to launch 10 new electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025. The company says that every model series will be electrified. BMW is expanding its EV lineup, while Volkswagen—reeling from its diesel emissions scandal—announced that it plans to sell three million electric cars by 2025. At the current 2016 Paris Auto Show, virtually every major auto manufacturer is showcasing new electric or hybrid vehicles.

The Bundesrat resolution would require only electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2030, and Germany's action is likely to precipitate wider European Union policy.

"We're ready for the launch of an electric product offensive that will cover all vehicle segments, from the compact to the luxury class," said Daimler AG Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche at the opening of the Paris Auto Show in September. Daimler is the parent company of Mercedes-Benz. The company that invented the automobile now needs to reinvent itself.

Stupid on every account.....A new book on how to kill your economy should be released soon by the German government. It will cover important topics like 1. Allow rampant immigration to occur to shortchange your citizens of jobs that pay. 2. Kill off the automobile industry. 3. Be a part of the stupid European Union.

I look forward to the revolution by your workers to revoke by force the stupid acts of your government.
Werner Rhein ·  Proprietor at Sourdough Plumbing & Hot Water Heating
I see only one stupid thing here and that is Rick Allen.

The same industries that build gas guzzlers will be building electric cars. Renewable alternative energy installation and maintenance employs 5 to 15 times more people per $ invested than the fossil fuel industry ever did.

Rick, you should be careful so you wouldn't be put on the guillotines.

German states - New cars in EU should be emission-free by 2030

German federal states want to ensure that the sale of new diesel and petrol cars in the European Union ends by 2030, in order to protect the climate. The surprising cross-party initiative in the upper house of parliament (Bundesrat), which experts consider highly ambitious, adds fuel to the simmering debate about the timing of a conventional car phase-out.

In the Bundesrat resolution, Germany’s sixteen states asked the EU Commission to evaluate whether member countries’ existing tax and fee practices effectively promote emission-free mobility. The goal is that “only emission-free cars are registered in the [European] Union by 2030 at the latest.”

The Bundesrat resolution is part of the “European strategy for low-emission mobility”, an initiative the Commission started after the Paris Climate Agreement. Germany ratified the Paris Agreement in late September.

The Bundesrat voted on the resolution on 23 September. It has no immediate legislative effect. The decision passed largely unnoticed in the German media until the weekly news magazine Der Spiegel wrote about it over the weekend.

The resolution passed the Bundesrat with a majority, which means that it was supported by state governments run by Social Democrats and rival Christian Democrats alike.

Germany's shift to renewable energy – dubbed the Energiewende – has made significant headway in the power sector, but there has been very slow progress in transport, where CO2 emissions have stayed essentially flat over the past 25 years (For background, read the CLEW dossier The energy transition and Germany’s transport sector.) Experts hope the spread of e-cars will finally cut the sector's high and persistent emissions.

Nearly emission-free mobility by 2050

The Bundesrat resolution also says: “Because not all [industry] sectors can become entirely greenhouse-gas emission-free by 2050, we explicitly support the target to achieve nearly emission-free mobility within the EU by 2050.”

The head of the German car industry association (VDA), Matthias Wissmann, told Süddeutsche Zeitung neither the German government nor the EU commission asked for a ban on conventional engines by 2030. He added that the Bundesrat only addressed the issue of harmonising mobility-related taxes in the EU. "It's absurd to conclude that German states or the Bundesrat demand a ban on the combustion engine in concrete political terms."

Many experts believe emission-free mobility by 2050 is only achievable if transport is powered by renewable electricity.   Because of cars’ long life spans, this implies registrations of combustion engine vehicles will have to be phased out much earlier;D

State Secretary in the energy ministry, Rainer Baake has repeatedly said this year that he believes Germany must stop registering fossil-fuelled cars by 2030 because the expected serviceable life of a vehicle is around 20 years.

Electric cars do not emit CO2 locally, but their operation is only climate-neutral if powered by renewable electricity.
Germany aims to increase the share of renewables in power consumption from around a third today to 50 percent by 2030.

The Green Party’s executive has proposed for its November party conference that from 2030, no newly registered cars should be diesel or petrol-fuelled. The party argues that a “transport transition” is also in the interest of the car industry, which “only stands a chance if it develops clean and quiet cars that no longer emit CO2. Both Social Democrats and Conservatives criticised the motion.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche will be a guest speaker at the party conference and will talk about climate and transport policy, to the dismay of some party representatives.

Ambitious deadline

In a commentary on the Bundesrat resolution, Christoph Stockburger argues in Spiegel Online that an official ban on combustion engines would be a stroke of luck for the industry, because it would bring planning security. “If the end of combustion engines becomes law, the carmakers know that investments in alternative engines will definitely pay off.”

Industry experts consider the timing suggested by the Bundesrat as very ambitious. Business consultancy pwc estimates that by 2030, only around a third of all new vehicles in Europe will be fully electric. A majority of new cars will still sport a combustion engine, but most of these will be hybrid vehicles, according to pwc.

So far, the uptake of electric mobility in Germany has been very slow. E-cars’ share of new registrations remains below one percent, despite a buyers’ premium introduced in the spring.  :(

The Norwegian government has discussed banning the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles as early as 2025.

The German carmakers BMW, Daimler and VW all have announced plans this year to accelerate their plans on e-mobility in the past months – see the CLEW factsheets Early e-car starter BMW plans new mobility sprint, Reluctant Daimler plans “radical” push into new mobility world, and Dieselgate forces VW to embrace green mobility. tageszeitung / Federal Environment Agency (UBA)

“We need an e-car quota”

Germany’s Federal Environment Agency (UBA) suggests a binding quota of e-car sales for car manufacturers to ensure the transport sector contributes to climate protection. “German carmakers do not want to leave the combustion engine. In the short term, they can earn more profits with it […] but in the long term, they slumber away the future,” said Martin Schmied, head of transport at the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), in an interview with tageszeitung.

“It’s good that we now talk about the end of the combustion engine, but this discussion must translate into actions in the short term. The UBA provides federal bodies such as the Ministry of the Environment with policy advice.

Investors Tell Auto Industry to Move to Low Carbonor Else

LONDON—Major investors have warned the automotive industry it needs to accelerate its readiness for a low-carbon world if it is to retain their support and prosper.

Vehicle makers must put climate change specialists on their boards, engage better with policy-makers, and invest more heavily in low-emission cars, says a network of 250 global investors with assets of more than $24trillion.

The demands come in a new report, Investor Expectations of Automotive Companies, published this week by the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC).

“Long-term investors want to ensure that automotive companies are prepared for the challenges stemming from climate change, new technologies, changing policies and shifts in demand caused by global trends,” says Dr Hans-Christoph Hirt, co-head of investment house Hermes EOS, a member of the IGCC.

“Investors expect the industry to embark upon a smoother route to future prosperity by developing and implementing long-term business strategies that are resilient to climate change and resulting regulatory shifts.”

Sustainable returns

Chris Davis, senior programme director of the Ceres Investor Network on Climate Risk, another IIGCC member, agrees. “A growing number of institutional investors recognise that climate change will impact their holdings, portfolios, and asset values in the short and long-term,” he says.

“To achieve sustainable returns for clients and beneficiaries, investors in the automotive sector must engage to ensure companies are prepared to thrive in a carbon-constrained environment and support robust policy action sufficient to drive the transition to clean vehicles.”

The traditional car industry has gradually been increasing its output of pure electric and hybrid diesel/electric models, but in small numbers. It has failed to shrug off its image as a foot-dragger in the fight against climate change—similar to the way most big oil companies are seen.

 a carbon-constrained environment.”

The recent Volkswagen emissions scandal, in which the German car manufacturer used “cheat devices” that underplayed pollution on its cars, has further tarnished the industry’s image over the last 12 months. And critics have long claimed that few vehicles live up to the fuel consumption levels claimed of them.

Making sure the industry has “closed the gap between real world and emissions testing” is highlighted by the IIGCC as one of the key issue that must be fixed.

But the finance houses also want car and truck makers to set more meaningful targets and metrics to reduce greenhouse gases in their own supply chain. And car companies need to engage more meaningfully with international policy-makers and their own investors on climate change.

Big investors point out that large car companies face serious threats inside their own sector from innovators such as the California-based automaker Tesla, evangelists for climate change and producers of low-carbon electric vehicles.

Climate agreement

And the finance houses say the move towards driverless vehicles, being pioneered by the likes of Google, poses a threat of even more severe potential new competition for the traditional car firms.

Last year’s Paris climate change agreement has increased the urgency for the big manufacturers such as Ford, VW and Toyota to move more quickly, the report warns.

They point to a recent study by the Moody’s credit agency that highlighted the potential dangers of tighter regulations for vehicles.

And the new IIGCC report warns that the automotive industry is already exposed to “a plethora of CO2 and pollutant emission reduction targets in all major markets”.

It says that tougher vehicle standards have already been implemented or are on their way in Australia, Brazil, China and India, as well as the US and Europe.

And it stresses that governments are increasingly incentivising the use of electric vehicles in countries such as Norway and Holland.
