May 1, 2021 👉 TPTB cannot expect Christian morality and ethics from people they deprived of Christian education. Business and government require moral ethical citizens. We are headed toward economic ruin. 😟

From Appalachia to Wall Street, how the US created an oligarchic dystopia

We unveil a special “Marc Steiner Show” audio documentary on the politics of Appalachia today; then, the group Patriotic Millionaires is pushing for the rich to be taxed more, but will that be enough to repair a deeply unequal society?

The Pentagon is OVERfunded! 😡
« Reply #889 on: June 15, 2021, 03:52:43 pm »

Michael Galant:

Let’s be clear, the Pentagon is not underfunded. In fact, you may remember that just a few weeks ago, President Biden proposed an astronomical Pentagon budget — over three-quarters of a TRILLION dollars :o — for the upcoming year.

But now the arms industry and some of their backers in Congress want even MORE money on top of that $750 billion+ for more unnecessary, dangerous weapons, and defense contractor giveaways.

This is crucial: the American Jobs Plan can’t be about Pentagon funding — it must stay focused on laying the foundation for our future by investing in people-centered solutions.

As the country reels from the crises of racism, economic inequality, unaffordable healthcare, and more — only made worse by the COVID pandemic — we must push those in power to redefine what security actually means and how they use their power to play a positive role in peoples’ lives.

Padding the Pentagon budget with billions of dollars in infrastructure and jobs funding when our communities are critically in need is not how we build the resilience necessary for people to thrive.

That’s why I’m asking you to take two minutes right now to  let Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Schumer know: No money for the Pentagon and arms dealers in the American Jobs Plan

Thank you for working for 🕊️ peace,

Michael, Faith, Abbey, and the Win Without War team

P.S. For those of you eager to cut the Pentagon budget in general, don’t worry. Debates and legislation about those funds will happen through the regular defense budgeting process, just like they do every year. And just like every year, we’re ramping up our fight to cut that waste!

The American political system is broken.  Right and left fling the most toxic, often ridiculous, statements about each other, to the delight of extremists.  Who benefits from this narrowing of our minds - the political industry!  Making millions from every campaign, trafficking in fear and hate,  lobbyists, strategizers, poll takers, and advertising agencies serve special interests to the detriment of the country.

Bill Shireman is the co -founder of #EarthX, a Texas- based organization, dedicated to bringing all sides together to overcome polarities, and drive solutions to the climate emergency that threatens our entire planet.

We need to take the growth out of #economics.  Instead of producing and consuming endlessly, we need to establish a sustainable economy based on the realities of ecology.  Science tells us that there are limits to the resources of the Earth, and to its capacity to absorb our polluting industries.  Aiming for a critical mass of just 5% of the voting public, 5 million Americans, spread across all 50 states, EarthX hopes to reverse our destructive and divisive paradigms, with the recognition that our dollars and votes can be used to tip the balance in favor of our survival.

Editorial Opinion  : Pathetic Maritime, Its Reactions and Reality

If you don’t like direct, brash or in your face, stop reading now. You may not like or even agree with what I am going to say but it is my opinion and I have a right to say it. It’s called free speech and I don’t live in Hong Kong anymore.

Obviously, not everything I am going to comment on applies to all ship owners, managers, and charterers, etc., but the fact they don’t do something about it makes them culpable. Of course, they will say they are doing this and that, but in truth, these are half-hearted statements and tongue-in-cheek actions designed to pacify the unions.

I know all the excuses and reasons and have heard the opinions about why maritime is how it is, but it’s simply not good enough. How is it justifiable that an industry that carries 80% of world trade and is doing it in ships worth millions of dollars is not able to influence governments to provide a proper manner of treating the workers in the industry? >:(

Many of today’s seafarers are effectively economically press-ganged into going to sea. They are then abused and bullied into signing extensions and held on board way beyond their contractual time. Yet none of the global influencers, like BHP, Rio, Shell, and many others have taken a stand. I mean really taken a stand. They choose to not own ships and put pressure on the owners. The same tactic that is used when 😈 they pay peanuts for charters and yet expect gold star crew and service.

How many executives in these companies would let their offspring go to sea in the current environment? Would they put them on board a ship and say, “Ciao, see you in 15 months.”? Oh, and by the way, you won’t get shore leave, or medical treatment and you may well be bullied and harassed and sexually attacked. Let’s not trot out the female Captain of a cruise ship or a social media star in Maersk. Admirable as these are in their competence and to be admired, they are pawns in the game of marketing.

The industry is sick. Its human rights record is pretty poor. Covid has only heightened the mistreatment of the mariners and the leadership has done nothing. I don’t expect IMO to do anything meaningful, it is not structured to do anything, and it is toothless.

In my recent efforts to get a petition raised, I was called by several people in Washington, they had noticed and it was being discussed. I even heard from the State Department. Turns out IMO has drafted a protocol to get sailors home and for fair treatment. It won’t see the light of day this year, and even if it does, what good will it do? We need governments to understand that all this trade is because of the forced labor of the press-ganged mariners. Long story short… nothing is happening right now.

Meanwhile, Delta is going nuts 😬. This sucker is not dead yet and if we think 2020 was bad for seafarers, the next 12 months could become worse. If that’s the case you will thank me for calling for a strike, because unless we resolve this matter and get some global travel consensus and protocol we could have a meltdown . How long do you think it is okay to 👿 bully and abuse and use forced labor to 😈💰🎩 operate the world trade lanes?

I know the ITF thinks I am wrong on the strike, and that it will hurt seafarers on FoC ships, but it can’t be much worse than it already is. Read the Happiness Index and think about the seafarers leaving in droves…. It is pretty clear that only action that hurts the 🎩 pocket gets results, the discussion on shipping costs is showing us that… so time for action, but what kind of action is it going to be?

There is nothing "legitimate" about wealth if it comes at the expense of other people. Christ was right that serving Mammon and exercising Spiritual Sovereignty are mutually incompatible stratagems.

Welch, aiming to put the $3.5 trillion figure in perspective, noted the country spent nearly $6 trillion on wars in the Middle East and Asia over the past 20 years and another $5 trillion in tax cuts for  wealthy individuals and institutions during the Republican presidencies of George W. Bush and Donald Trump.

Bernie Sanders, at a career apex, faces his biggest political test yet

By Kevin O'Connor

His sound bites for the common good and against corporate greed haven’t changed. But facing the biggest test of his political career, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said the stakes had never been higher.

The Vermont independent toured his home state this Labor Day weekend in support of a $3.5 trillion budget bill that, if adopted by colleagues now arguing over its price tag, would be the largest federal social spending plan in the nation’s history.

“This bill will be the most consequential piece of legislation for working people, the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor since [President Franklin Delano Roosevelt] and the New Deal of the 1930s,” he said in Springfield on Saturday as he kicked off a five-town tour that drew more than 2,000 people there and in Brattleboro, Middlebury, Newport and St. Johnsbury.

The bill could bring life to a host of Sanders’ longtime hopes, including universal pre-kindergarten, free community college, paid family and medical leave, energy efficiency and climate change improvements, price reductions on prescription drugs and the largest-ever expansions of affordable housing and Medicare health insurance to cover dental, hearing and vision care.

“My Republican colleagues are going to tell you that Bernie’s plan is going to raise taxes,” Sanders said. “They are right. We are going to raise taxes — on the billionaires and large corporations — but nobody in America who makes less than $400,000 a year will pay a penny more.”

Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach Expand Gate Hours to Alleviate Congestion

With unprecedented congestion at Southern California ports, the ports of Los Angeles and Long beach are taking unprecedented steps to ease the logjam.

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are neighbors at the San Pedro Bay Port Complex and rank as the top one and two container ports in the United States, respectively. Combined, the ports move approximately 40% of all containerized cargo entering the U.S. each year and about 30% of all containerized exports. In recent weeks, the number of ships both in port, at anchor, and even drifting off the coast have reached all-time highs, with new daily records being set daily.

After consultation with multiple supply chain stakeholders and the U.S. Department of Transportation, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles today are announced bold new measures to improve freight movement and reduce delays through the ports as they continue to experience record volumes. Specifically, both ports will expand the hours during which trucks can pick up and return containers, measures meant to enhance the ports’ landside operations to help meet the unprecedented growth in cargo volume and increase throughput.

Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach, announced that Long Beach will take the first step towards a 24/7 supply chain by maximizing nighttime operations. Meanwhile, Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka announced that the Port of Los Angeles will expand weekend operating gate hours. Dubbed “Accelerate Cargo LA,” the Port of Los Angeles’ program will operate on a pilot basis to ensure that gate availability meets cargo demands and provides greater transparency to improve efficiency.

Both ports are also calling on marine terminal operators to incentivize the use of all available gate hours, especially night gates, to reduce congestion and maximize cargo throughput capacity.

“We appreciate the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration in marshalling a response to the unprecedented global supply chain disruption so acutely felt here at the San Pedro Bay Port Complex,” said Port of Los Angeles Director Seroka. “These steps, in addition to what has previously been recommended, demonstrate that the Port of Los Angeles will continue to innovate in order to manage this historic cargo surge.”

“The Port of Long Beach is prepared to take bold and immediate action to help the supply chain move the record cargo volumes that keep our economy moving, and we appreciate the support and leadership shown by the Biden-Harris Administration,” added Port of Long Beach Director Cordero.

The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles say they will work closely with the trucking community to ensure that all truck operators understand how to take advantage of incentivized gate hours as well as the expanded opportunities that will be created to move cargo during non-peak times. In addition to expanded hours and incentivized reservation priority, the ports urge terminals and the trucking community to consider additional corrective measures.

International Longshore and Warehouse Union Coast Committeeman Frank Ponce De Leo welcomed the initiative and said dockworkers were ready to meet the challenge.

ILWU dockworkers have continued to work every day during the pandemic, and we welcome the opportunity to work extended gate and weekend hours. In fact, our contracts allow our employers to hire us for the third shift, thus providing the movement of cargo around the clock,” De Leo said. “Dockworkers have been breaking records moving more cargo than ever at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and this move by the port directors will work only if others in the supply chain step up to the challenges.”

“I thank Directors Cordero and Seroka for their leadership and all of the men and women who have helped meet the challenge of moving extraordinary cargo volumes during a global pandemic,” said John Porcari, the Ports Envoy to the Biden-Harris Administration’s Task Force on Supply Chain Disruptions. “I look forward to continuing to work with all stakeholders to strengthen the resiliency of our transportation supply chain.”

SOJOURNERS

September 23, 2021

WHEN WILL BE THE RIGHT TIME FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO ADDRESS THE CRUSHING NEEDS OF FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES?

Snippets:

While doing frontline social work with aging adults during the pandemic, I saw the importance of supporting people throughout their lives. The social work code of ethics calls us to meet people where they are, honoring the dignity of life by using our relationships to heal and uplift. This often requires us to connect people with life-saving resources to meet basic needs, including housing, medical care, education, and even transportation. Even amid so much death, I shared moments of joy when I could connect with my patients, who knew I was there to help, sans judgement, and that I genuinely wanted them to live the life God intended for them.

It is not lost on me that many patients would not have survived without access to social supports like housing, food assistance, and access to affordable health care. I also know millions of people of all ages in the United States rely on similar supports. For example, we already know that increasing access to programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the recently expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) demonstrably reduce the risk of poverty and its impacts on health and well-being. ... ...

Many people in the United States were already suffering before the pandemic; COVID-19 has exacerbated that hardship for millions of us. As a person of faith, I find this suffering unacceptable, as it dishonors the inherent dignity of people shaped in the image of God. ... ...

Nearly one in seven children — more than 10 million children, or about half the population of New York — are living in poverty. These numbers are even more startling for children of color. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, children in poverty are disproportionately Black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native.

Can our elected officials really justify making these children wait for the “right time” to enable them to lift themselves out of poverty?
