Difference Between Jewish and Hebrew

• Categorized under Culture | Difference Between Jewish and Hebrew

Jewish vs Hebrew

Every country and every nation has its own people, language, religion, and culture, and they are called by different names too. Take the case of the Israelites, for example; they are also called Jewish and Hebrew.

“Jewish” is the word used to refer to everything that relates to the culture and religion of the Jews. It includes their nationality, ethnicity, religion, and traditions. The State of Israel is established as a Jewish nation whose people are descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The word “Jew” from which the word “Jewish” is derived, comes from the Middle English word “gyw” which in turn came from the French word “giu” or “juieu.” They all stemmed from the Latin word “Judaeus” meaning “Judean” or “from the land of Judea.” The origin of the word, however, was the Aramaic “Y’huddai” from the Hebrew word “Yehudi” which is the term used to refer to a member of the tribe of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob.

The word “Hebrew,” on the other hand, is used to refer to a descendant of Abraham or an Israelite. It is also used to refer to their cultural and religious ties and those who have converted to Judaism. It is more often used to refer to the ancient Canaanite language of the Israelites, though. It is the official language of the State of Israel but is also used by Samaritans and other non-Jewish groups. There are many forms of the Hebrew language: one is classical Hebrew which is used for prayer and study; and the other one is modern Hebrew which is spoken by most of the Jewish people and the official language of Israel.

The word “Hebrew” comes from the Middle English word “Ebreu” which comes from Old French derived from the Latin word “Hebraeus.” They all came from the Aramaic word “Ebrai” and the Hebrew word “‘ibri” which was one of the names used to refer to the Jewish people from “‘eber,” an ancestor of Abraham. It was the term used to refer to the Israelites before the conquest of Canaan after which they were known as Israelites. Although the word “Hebrew” is still used today to refer to the Israelites, it is used to refer to those who use the Hebrew language.

Summary:

1.“Jewish” is a word used to refer to everything that relates to the culture and religion of the Jews while “Hebrew” is also used to refer to the Jewish people or the Israelites but is also the name for their language.

2.
“Jewish” has a more religious connotation while “Hebrew” does not.

3.Today, Israelites are more often referred to as Jewish rather than Hebrews which was the term used before the conquest of Canaan.

4.The word “Jewish” comes from the word “Jew” which comes from the Latin word “Judaeus” meaning “from the land of Judea”; also from the Hebrew word “Yehudi” which is the term used to refer to a member of the tribe of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob while the word “Hebrew” comes from the Latin word “Hebraeus” and the Hebrew word “‘ibri” which was derived from “‘eber,” an ancestor of Abraham

Why is Jesus named Jesus?

Dear Maggie,

Quote
Why was Christ named Jesus?  What is the significance of the name?

Thanks,

Nominally Noodling

Dear Nominally Noodling,

Thank ye for yer question.  We use a lot of names and titles for the son of God but rarely do we take the time to stop and wonder what they mean.

First off we need to know that Jesus wasn’t known as “Jesus” to his friends and family.  If you went around Galilee at the height of Christ’s life asking for Jesus you would probably get a lot blank stares.  If you instead asked for Yeshua you might get pointed in the right direction.

Jesus is a translation of a translation of the Hebrew name Yeshua, the name we know as Joshua.  The angel Gabriel told Joseph to name the child in Mary’s womb Yeshua—which would have automatically registered with Jewish readers as a name that means “God saves” or “deliverer.”

When the Hebrew and Aramaic was transliterated to Greek (the language of the New Testament) then Joshua became Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous).  This was later transliterated into the Latin Iesvs. Through many a twist and turn the name Jesus didn’t come around until the 17th century. Even today, Jesus is just one of the many versions of the name given for God made human.  In me own Scottish we call the Son of God, Ìosa.

The many iterations of the name of this deliverer sent by God reflect our need, in each of our tongues, to say this name in a way we can understand and bring God near, just as God came near to us in Christ.  But we must also remember that in the roots of our name Jesus is a name that has great significance for the salvation history of God’s work in the world.  Just as Joshua in the book that bears his name led the people of God into the promise land, so this man we call Jesus leads us into a new life.

I hope that helps yer noodling!

God’s peace be with ya,

Maggie

Title: Why Does the Date for Easter Change Every Year?
Post by: AGelbert on May 15, 2019, 03:55:21 pm
Why Does the Date for Easter Change Every Year?

Every year, we can expect Christmas to be celebrated on exactly the same date, no matter the circumstances: December 25. On the opposite end of the holiday spectrum is Easter, which can cause quite a bit of confusion because it can happen on any date between March 22 and April 25. That's more than a month of Sundays, which makes Easter a difficult day to pin down. The reason for the seeming randomness is that Easter is based on the biblical resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is said to have occurred after Passover, a Jewish festival determined by lunar cycles. To be precise, Passover is based on the occurrence of the first full moon of the spring -- after March 20. Easter Sunday is then set for the following Sunday. Because the full moon doesn't always happen on the same day, Easter becomes variable. In 1963, the Roman Catholic Church said that it would accept a fixed date for Easter if other Christian churches agreed to it, but as of 2019, nothing has been set in stone.

🕯️ The lighter (Sweet Misery :P) side of Easter:

Agelbert NOTE: I suspect Dentists are quite pleased with the commercialization of Sugar Addiction in the USA. The pharmaceutical corporation  (http://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/gallery/renewablerevolution/3-130418193910.gif) executives making price gouging massive profits from the wave of diabetics in the USA that require insulin are, I am quite certain, pleased as well.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. -- Luke 2:7-12

AG,

Thanks, bro. Other than listening to the Christmas music videos below while playing computer chess, it was a day mostly identical to most other days. We do not celebrate holidays of any sort any longer. I know it seems a bit grim for Christians to not celebrate Christmas Day, but that's how Carmen and I roll now.

At any rate, I'm glad you and yours had a good time. 👍

Title: If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population,"
Post by: AGelbert on December 25, 2021, 05:39:30 pm
Agelbert NOTE: Have you ever heard your brother and/or your sister say that there are "too many" (heirs) when discussing your inheritance from your deceased parents? I have. It was (http://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/gallery/renewablerevolution/2/3-310119164317.gif) depressing to listen to this (not very) veiled threat from someone who claimed to be a Christian. It is my sincere hope that before she died she repented of this grievous sin. Also, I hope and pray that, before his death, the brother she quoted, who once saved my life from drowning (I was able to return the favor years later), repents of, as the quote from "A Christmas Carol" states, the unbridled arrogance of an "Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust."

Though I was subsequently defrauded of my inhertance by them and my 4 other siblings, I forgive them and ask God, right here, and right NOW, to forgive those still alive (two have died), if they repent, and NOT require them to make monetary restitution to me as a condition of His forgiveness. May God have Mercy on all of us.
Merry Christmas! ☝🏻🙏🏼

SNIPPETS:

Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir."

"Are there no prisons?"

"Plenty of prisons..."

"And the Union workhouses." demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"

"Both very busy, sir..."
"Those who are badly off must go there."
"Many can't go there; and many would rather die."

"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population." ... ...

"Spirit 🕊️," said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before, "tell me if Tiny Tim will live."

"I see a vacant seat," replied the Ghost 🕊️, "in the poor chimney corner, and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, the child will die."

"No, no," said Scrooge. "Oh no, kind Spirit 🕊️! say he will be spared."

"If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, none other of my race," returned the Ghost 🕊️, "will find him here. What then? If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the Spirit, and was overcome with penitence and grief.

"Man," said the Ghost 🕊️, "if man you be in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child.

Oh God! to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust."
