Movie Trailers That Spark Activism from ‘Iolani School’s 7th Graders

Posted by Katie-Jay on Monday, October 20, 2014

A BIG mahalo to ‘Iolani School world geography teacher Mr. Epstein and his talented 7th graders. After Gabriel, KTJ, and Sara-Christine of Team i-ACT brought Camp Darfur to the ‘Iolani campus, Mr. Epstein and students went the extra mile to spark social awareness by using tools – like iMovie – to create short trailers to get the message across that WE (you and I) are the ones who can bring about change and hope for the defenseless victims of genocide.

Please take the time to view and experience all 7 short trailers below.  Each are different.  Some use the same music and photos, some have original content captured via smartphones, but each trailer has astonishing facts that will take your breath away. WARNING: Some of the images may be inappropriate for children due to the disturbing historical events captured on film, but each piece was created by ‘Iolani students with the intention of bringing the dark side of genocide to the attention of their peers, in order for them to understand that genocide and mass atrocities are STILL occurring and should never have to be experienced by anyone.  (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/301.gif)

What do you think? Which video resonates with you the most? Do you have a favorite video that compels you to act to end genocide?  Is there a particular video that made you realize how cruel and disgusting humans can be to other humans?  Vote below – the students of ‘Iolani School and Team i-ACT would love to hear what is effective. And the 7th grade production team with the most votes at the end of this month (October) will receive the infamous “Humanity Before Politics” t-shirts.  Mahalo!    (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/47b20s0.gif)

That Trump murders with less sophistication, outward moral restraint and credible claim to embody enlightened Western values and multilateral commitment than Obama did is perhaps preferable to some degree. It is better for empire to be exposed in its full and ugly nakedness, to speed its overdue demise.

The U.S. is not just the top menace only to peace on Earth. It is also the leading threat to personal privacy (as was made clearer than ever by the Edward Snowden revelations), to democracy (the U.S. funds and equips repressive regimes around the world) and to a livable global natural environment (thanks in no small part to its role as headquarters of global greenhouse gassing and petro-capitalist 🐉🦕 🦖 climate denial 🦀).

Trump 🦀 Is Running a War Crime (http://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/gallery/renewablerevolution/3-250817135149.gif) Recycling Program

Thursday, March 29, 2018

By Rebecca Gordon, TomDispatch | News Analysis

SNIPPET:

Indeed, Secretary of Defense James ("Mad Dog") Mattis has said that the president has the right to lock up anyone identified as a "combatant" in our forever wars, well, forever. In 2016, he assured the Senate Armed Services Committee that any detainee who "has signed up with this enemy" -- no matter where "the president, the commander-in-chief, sends us" to fight -- should know that he will be a "prisoner until the war is over." In other words, since the war on terror will never end, anyone the US captures in Afghanistan, Iraq, Niger, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, or elsewhere will face the possibility of spending the rest of his life in Guantánamo.

Recycling War Criminals 🐍

Speaking of Mattis and war crimes, there's already plenty of blood on his hands. He earned that "Mad Dog" sobriquet while commanding the US Marines who twice in 2004 laid siege to Fallujah. During those sieges, American forces sealed that Iraqi city off so no one could leave, attacked marked ambulances and aid workers, shot women, children, and an ambulance driver, killed almost 6,000 civilians outright, displaced 200,000 more, and destroyed 75% of the city with bombs and other munitions. The civilian toll was vastly disproportionate to any possible military objective -- itself the definition of a war crime.

One of the uglier aspects of that battle was the use of white phosphorus, an incendiary munition. Phosphorus ignites spontaneously when exposed to air. If bits of that substance attach to human beings, as long as there's oxygen to combine with the phosphorus, skin and flesh burn away, sometimes right into the bone. Use of white phosphorus as an anti-personnel weapon is forbidden under the Chemical Weapons Convention, which the US has signed.

In Iraq, Mattis also saw to it that charges would be dropped against soldiers responsible for murdering civilians in the city of Haditha. In a well-documented 2005 massacre -- a reprisal for a roadside bomb -- American soldiers shot 24 unarmed men, women, and children at close range. As the convening authority for the subsequent judicial hearing, Mattis dismissed the murder charges against all the soldiers accused of that atrocity.

Mattis is hardly the only slightly used war criminal in the Trump administration.

Authored by Paul Street via TruthDig.com,

SNIPPET:

There are good reasons for any good progressive to bemoan the presence of the childish, racist, sexist and ecocidal, right-wing plutocrat Donald Trump in the White House. One complaint about Trump that should be held at arm’s-length by anyone on the left, however, is the charge that Trump is contributing to the decline of U.S. global power - to the erosion of the United States’ superpower status and the emergence of a more multipolar world.

This criticism of Trump comes from different elite corners. Last October, the leading neoconservative foreign policy intellectual and former George W. Bush administration adviser Eliot Cohen wrote an Atlantic magazine essay titled “How Trump Is Ending the American Era.” Cohen recounted numerous ways in which Trump had reduced “America’s standing and ability to influence global affairs.” He worried that Trump’s presidency would leave “America’s position in the world stunted” and an “America lacking confidence” on the global stage.

But it isn’t just the right wing that writes and speaks in such terms about how Trump is contributing to the decline of U.S. hegemony. A recent Time magazine reflection by the liberal commentator Karl Vick (who wrote in strongly supportive terms about the giant January 2017 Women’s March against Trump) frets that that Trump’s “America First” and authoritarian views have the world “looking for leadership elsewhere.”

Quote
“Could this be it?” Vick asks. “Might the American Century actually clock out at just 72 years, from 1945 to 2017? No longer than Louis XIV ruled France? Only 36 months more than the Soviet Union lasted, after all that bother?”
