Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh stumbles out of the gate

Bill Palmer | 11:58 pm EDT July 9, 2018

Palmer Report » Analysis

Brett Kavanaugh just did a big favor for those who are seeking to defeat his nomination to the Supreme Court. Donald Trump could have picked any far-right judge and made his billionaire donors and extremist supporters happy. So why did he choose Kavanaugh specifically? You and I know that it obviously involved a private conversation about personal loyalty. But thanks to Kavanaugh’s big stupid mouth, now the whole world knows it.

After Donald Trump introduced Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee, Kavanaugh stepped to the microphone and said this: “No president has ever consulted more widely or talked to more people from more backgrounds to seek input for a Supreme Court nomination.” It was precisely what Trump wanted to hear. It was also the dumbest thing Kavanaugh has ever said in public, because he just personally married himself to Trump in the court of public opinion.

There are two ways we can convince mainstream America to ferociously stand up and fight against this Supreme Court pick. The first is to point out that Brett Kavanaugh will cast the deciding vote to overturn Roe v Wade, gay marriage, and other crucial rulings. This simply requires pointing to his existing record of far-right extremism. The second is to frame Kavanaugh as being a corrupt puppet of Donald Trump. This was going to be a difficult sell, until Kavanaugh just handed us the above quote.

I’ll post Brett Kavanaugh’s words about Donald Trump again, because this is the quote that you copy-paste and send to all your friends who wouldn’t normally care about the Supreme Court but who think Trump is a corrupt criminal: “No president has ever consulted more widely or talked to more people from more backgrounds to seek input for a Supreme Court nomination.”

These are not the words of a legitimate judge. They’re the words of a corrupt judge who is willing and eager to do Trump’s 🦀 personal bidding 🦍 at the expense of America.

In Upholding Muslim Ban, the Supreme Court Ignored International Law

Marjorie Cohn Truthout

PUBLISHED July 1, 2018

SNIPPET:

Evidence of the Discriminatory Nature of the Travel Ban

Even though the Supreme Court majority held that the ban did not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, much evidence exists to the contrary.

The Establishment Clause says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” That means “one religious denomination cannot be officially preferred over another,” according to Supreme Court case law.

After quoting a few of Trump’s anti-Muslim statements, Roberts noted, “the issue before us is not whether to denounce the statements” but rather “the significance of those statements in reviewing a Presidential directive, neutral on its face, addressing a matter within the core of executive responsibility.” Roberts added, “we must consider not only the statements of a particular President, but also the authority of the Presidency itself.”

Roberts wrote that the Court could consider the president’s statements “but will uphold the policy so long as it can reasonably be understood to result from a justification independent of unconstitutional grounds.” Courts must give great deference to the president in immigration matters and will uphold his policy if it has any legitimate purpose, Roberts noted. “The entry suspension has a legitimate grounding in national security concerns, quite apart from any religious hostility.” The text doesn’t specifically mention religion, so Roberts wrote it was “neutral on its face.”

Sotomayor spent seven of the 28 pages of her dissent listing more than a dozen statements by Trump denigrating Muslims. She cited the policy’s initial purpose as a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” in Trump’s words. But that policy “now masquerades behind a façade of national security concerns,” Sotomayor wrote.

She quoted a Trump adviser who said, “When [Donald Trump] first announced it, he said, ‘Muslim ban.’” Sotomayor also listed Trump’s declarations that “Islam hates us,” “we’re having problems with Muslims coming into the country,” and “Muslims do not respect us at all.”

Trump said President Franklin D. Roosevelt “did the same thing” with his internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, Sotomayor noted. Trump told a story about General John J. Pershing killing a large group of Muslim insurgents in the Philippines with bullets dipped in pig’s blood. When he issued his first ban, Trump explained that Christians would be given preference for entry as refugees into the United States. He also retweeted three anti-Muslim videos.

“Taking all the relevant evidence together,” Sotomayor wrote, “a reasonable observer would conclude that the Proclamation was driven primarily by anti-Muslim animus, rather than by the Government’s asserted national security justifications.” The Proclamation, she added, “is nothing more than a ‘religious gerrymander.'

Corporate Fascism 😈 👹 💵 🎩 Corrupted the Christian Church in the USA

Fitzgerald made her name with her now classic Fire in the Lake, which won both the Pulitzer and the National Book Award and is still considered one of the best accounts of the Vietnam War. Her sixth book chronicles the social and political roles of Evangelicals in America. Now constituting twenty-five percent of the American population, Evangelicals have helped shape the country since the Puritans, though they became a dominant force only with the Great Awakenings of the nineteenth century. A populist rebellion centered in revivals, the movement split along North-South lines with the Civil War, then into modernist-fundamentalist factions. Preachers like Billy Graham worked to unite the groups, but the turbulent 1960s divided them further.

Worshipping Donald Trump

Tim Faulkner

Updated: 7:59 pm EST Sun Feb 25, 2018

It’s been said that it’s rude to discuss politics and religion in a social setting. That is becoming more and more difficult to avoid given the current political environment. With the advent of social media, more people began feeling comfortable sharing their beliefs on all issues, despite now having an even larger audience than when previous conversations were done at the dinner table or perhaps after a few drinks at the bar, when lips are loose and true opinions flow faster than the beer tap.

With the recent death of Evangelist Billy Graham there is even more discussion than normal of religion by those in politics. The rise of Donald Trump, and his subsequent support by those that claim to be extremely religious, is still odd. With absolutely zero evidence of Trump ever being religious prior to his presidential run so-called Christians seemed to flock to him as the second coming of Christ.

Their near worship of him, to this day, is baffling. The fact that Donald Trump still carries a high approval rating among Evangelicals is almost laughable, and certainly confusing. Despite all of the facts coming forward almost daily, involving Trump’s multiple affairs with p o r n stars and Playboy playmates, the “religious right” continue to make excuses for him.

So what could possibly explain the praise, admiration, and even idolization Evangelicals show towards a man who exhibits literally zero of the attributes taught by any religion? Are the followers simply brainwashed, believing every word their leaders push? Why are top Evangelicals willing to sell out their faith to gain supporters? Perhaps for the very same reason that Trump was happy to sell out America: for money and power. One thing is certain – fake prophets seem willing to do anything for real profits.

Billy Graham was on the wrong side of history

Matthew Avery Sutton

SNIPPET:

Quote
When Billy Graham stands before the judgment seat of God, he may finally realize how badly he failed his country, and perhaps his God. On civil rights and the environmental crisis, the most important issues of his lifetime, he championed the wrong policies.

Full article:

Agelbert NOTE: As a Christian, I am CERTAIN that Billy Graham, a staunch friend of Richard Nixon , failed God continually. Graham is a textbook example of the Corporate Fascist Corruption of Christianity in the USA. Graham chose power and privilege over justice and truth. IOW, Graham worshipped MAMMON instead of God.

WHAT IS MAMMON?

by Creflo Dollar | 9 Apr 2017

SUMMARY

Jesus did not throw words around, so it is significant that he used the word “mammon” at least four times in the New Testament. When he used it, he did not simply mean money; he deliberately used the word “mammon” to show us what happens when we become attached to money. But mammon’s influence does not just stop with wealth. If we are not vigilant, this spirit will extend to every area of our lives and convince us to trust it instead of God. It tries to motivate us to do more things for it than for God, with the goal of replacing God as the source of what we need. In the book of Exodus, this spirit convinced the people that they did not need God, and its strategy has not changed This evil spirit will deliberately lead us astray and abandon us, but God will always extend his mercy and grace when we need him.

A. Mammon is not money. It is the spirit of deceitful riches that lies to us.

He who is faithful in that which is least is also faithful in much, and he who is unjust in the least is also unjust in much (Luke 16:10-14).

Jesus’ parable, as well as the entire chapter, is about a steward who was unfaithful with his master’s goods because he was influenced by mammon.

The original translation of mammon is “deceitful riches.” Money with the spirit of mammon on it becomes deceitful.

Money is neither good nor bad; it takes on the spirit of who has it. How it is used depends on whether its owner is under the influence of God or mammon.

Mammon refers to the desire to pursue wealth as a primary goal in life. The Bible says to seek God first, and everything else will be added (Matthew 6:33).

The devil took Jesus up to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. He said to him, I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me (Matthew 4:8, 9).

Mammon tried to seduce Jesus; there is no reason not to think it would try the same trick with us.

Whatever mammon offers us is deceitful. Everything from this spirit is designed to fool us into thinking that walking with it will end well, but mammon always leaves us in a pit.

When Jesus entered Jericho, Zacchaeus climbed a tree to see him as he passed by. Jesus looked up and saw him, and said to Zacchaeus to come down quickly, because he had to stay at his house that day. Jesus then told another parable to teach about the link between money and faithfulness (Luke 19:2-24).

Zacchaeus first felt the favor of God when Jesus looked up and greeted him.

Zacchaeus had previously been under the spirit of mammon, but a meeting with Jesus freed him to become a giver.

B. We must be careful not to unwittingly make mammon our god.

Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6).

We are told to be anxious for nothing. Being anxious about our unmet needs is a sign that we worship mammon.

No one can serve two masters; either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and be against the other. You cannot serve God and deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in (Matthew 6:24-32, AMPC).
We must stop being perpetually uneasy, anxious, and worried.

Aim at and strive for first of all his kingdom and righteousness, his way of doing and being right, and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. Do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble (Matthew 6:33, 34, AMPC).

When we live in the present instead of the future, the Holy Spirit will give us the grace need at the moment.

We need not fear the future.

NORTH CAROLINA RELIGIOUS GROUP HELD “CHILD SLAVES”

Thursday January 11, 2018

Leaders of an “alternative religious group” in Cumberland, North Carolina have been arrested for forcing children as young as nine to work in fish markets to help fund the organization. Four have been arrested thus far though police have arrest warrants for six other suspects.

WRAL reports:

The group lives on a compound off McCollum Road in Godwin known as McCollum Ranch and operates at least three John C’s Fish Markets and mobile grills in Fayetteville and one in Lumberton, authorities said. Several former residents told authorities that children of members had to work full time in the fish markets with little to no compensation, lifting heavy boxes, keeping fish iced, cutting fish and cleaning, as well as performing construction and maintenance on the mobile grills after hours.

John McCollum, who runs the fish markets, Brenda Joyce Hall, Cornelia McDonald and Pamela Puga Luna have been arrested on charges of operating a continuing criminal enterprise, involuntary servitude of a minor, obtaining property by false pretense and conspiracy. Arrest warrants on the same charges have been issued for Shirley McNatt, Daffene Edge, Kassia Rogers, Irish Williams, Shirnitka McNatt and Earlene Hayat.

Lt. Sean Swain, spokesman for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, added that the cult has abused children for years. “We found that kids are like second generation of the ranch and that some of the people that we’ve charged in this were actually victimized years ago. They’ve just never left this ranch, and now their kids are second-generation victims,” he said.

McCollum is being held in the Cumberland County jail under a $1.1 million bond along with Hall, McDonald, and Luna.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of the other six suspects to call the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.

DEC 24, 2017 TD ORIGINALS

What Christmas Means

By Chris Hedges

SNIPPET:

Quote
Jesus was not a Roman citizen. He lived under Roman occupation. The Romans were white. Jesus was a person of color. And the Romans, who peddled their own version of white supremacy, nailed people of color to crosses almost as often as we finish them off with lethal injections, gun them down in the streets or lock them up in cages. The Romans killed Jesus as an insurrectionist, a revolutionary. They feared the radicalism of the Christian Gospel. And they were right to fear it. The Roman state saw Jesus the way the American state saw Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Then, like now, prophets were killed.

The radicalism of the Christian Gospel would be muted, distorted and denied by the institutional church once it came to power in the third century. It would be perverted by court theologians, church leaders and, in the 20th century, fascists. It would be mangled by the heretics in the Christian right to sanctify the worst aspects of American imperialism and capitalism. The Bible unequivocally condemns the powerful. It is not a self-help manual to become rich. It does not bless America or any other nation. It was written for the powerless, for those the theologian James Cone calls the crucified of the earth. It was written to give a voice to, and affirm the dignity of, those being crushed by malignant power and empire.

Excellent article:

Agelbert NOTE: All true followers of Christ get the same treatment in this valley of tears.
Quote
Proverbs 18:7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

But all that abuse and rejection by the lovers of this world, especially if they are brethren, is worth it.
Quote
Luke 9

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels

PROOF that there is NO organized Christian Church in the USA

Poll: Majority Of Evangelicals Would Support Satan If He Ran As Republican Candidate

November 15, 2017

U.S.—A new LifeWay Research poll confirmed Wednesday that a majority of conservative evangelicals would vote for Satan, the Prince of Darkness, should he run for public office as a Republican candidate.

The poll found that 72% of self-identified evangelicals would vote and even campaign for the prince of fallen angels should he promise to promote Republican policies while in office.

“Most of those we surveyed agreed that they would in fact vote for Satan, as long as he verbally supported pro-life and pro-Second Amendment platform positions,” the head of the research study said. “A majority of respondents ‘strongly agreed’ that it was important for a candidate to pay lip service to the hot-button issues of the religious right, while strongly disagreeing that a candidate’s personal penchant for tempting countless millions of souls into the fires of hell would affect his public policies.”

“Lucifer? Yeah, I’d vote for him, as long as he claims to be a Republican,” one member of a study focus group said. “He’s got some character flaws, sure—who doesn’t—but we’ve got to remember that ensuring we Christians get some fleeting political power is far more important than whether our chosen candidate does a little soul-devouring on the side.”

The poll also looked at related issues, such as the willingness of evangelicals  to overlook or minimize major moral failings in human candidates.

“Personal indiscretions, shady business dealings, making blood sacrifices to Azathoth the Daemon Sultan in secret—Christians are now willing to forgive literally everything if it means they’ll have some kind of political clout,” the study head told reporters. “Our findings confirm that conservative Christians are actually more likely to vote for mobsters, cultists, and hellish demon kings than any other demographic.

At publishing time, study officials had confirmed evangelicals would also be willing to support Sith lords, elder gods, and the evil Dr. Robotnik if they were to run for office as members of the GOP.

https://babylonbee.com/news/poll-majority-of-evangelicals-would-support-satan-if-he-ran-as-republican-candidate/

Agelbert Observation: Yeah, the above is satire. But the evidence is irrefutable that the WALK of the overwhemling majority (at leat 72%) of these pseudo-Christians is the exact opposite of the "we follow Jesus Christ's teachings" TALK. While it is true that these pseudo-Christians have never actually voted for Lucifer, the entitiy that Jesus Christ called the Prince of this world, they did vote for an adequate representative.

There are some Doomstead Diners that love to ridicule and condemn Christianity (i.e. the teachings of Jesus Christ) based on the voting habits of the pseudo-Christians from the American Organized Mainstream Orwellian Christian Churches, like those that dominate Texas and Florida politics, though the demonic influence of these War loving bastions of gun nuttery and bigotry is not limited to those two states. These crazed bigot factories are firmly entrenched all over the USA   These Lucifer worshipping Churches are funded and religiously supported by their fellow Social Darwinist Religionists from the Military Industrial Complex AND Big Oil AND many 'Second Amendment' fetish gun lovers AND white supremacists AND (so on you get the 'might is right' idea).

So, the next time you fine felllows want to finger the "Christians" for the profit over people and planet woes cursing the USA, I suggest you remember that the nominal Christian Churches in the USA were long ago infiltrated (i.e. flipped to anti-Christian ideology) by the lovers of war and selective law enforcement in our IMPERIALIST/CAPITALIST government, who wanted to MAKE SURE this country NEVER espoused Christian behavior in foreign or domestic policy.

The RELIGION of most Doomstead Diners, like that of the pseudo-Christians who voted for Trump, and would vote for Lucifer himself if he he gave lip service to their spoon fed wedge issues, is Social Darwinism.

True, you Diners aren't being suckered into forking over 10% of your income to some sanctimonious charlatan crook running a con. And you save a little more money by not being preached to at in some building once a week or so. You are also far more objective than the pseudo-Christians church goers who delude themselves into believing that they worship Christ instead of Mammon. You materialsts have done all that scientific caloric math and haven't found any intrinsic thermodynamic value in the energy density of spiritual powers or the promise of salvation in the afterlife. Like all materialsts would say, "If ya can't measure it, it ain't there".

But in a way, you are even greater suckers than the pseudo-Christians. How can that be? Well, at least they actually believe that Lucifer exists. Lucifer has you by the cognitive short hairs because, not only do you scoff at the very idea of fallen angels, but you do not even want to admit that evil exists!

Quote
May 14, 2014 ... “Maybe his [Satan's] greatest achievement in these times has been to make us believe that he does not exist, and that all can be fixed on a purely human level,” said Pope Francis.
https://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/michael-w-chapman/pope-francis-satan-s-greatest-achievement-has-been-make-us-believe-he

The CHURCH of Jesus Christ, since Jesus Christ founded it, has ALWAYS been composed of the members of the BODY of Christ. It has NEVER been a building. It will never be a human organization composed of a hierarchy. It is a group of humans who serve Jesus Christ, PERIOD. Many of those people who are destined for salvation do not even know they will be saved or that they are already serving Jesus Christ. Many who believe they are serving Jesus Christ and are saved will be damned. Only God knows. But I am certain we will all be judged by our actions (i.e. fruit/behavior), not by our words.

E vangelical Christians & Climate Change (#GreenSunday)

August 13th, 2017 by Steve Hanley

SNIPPET:

Deacon McGrane refutes much of the scriptural basis that evangelicals rely on to justify their attacks on climate science and governmental policies designed to limit climate change. He feels it is essential to challenge those beliefs for the good of humanity, despite their basis in religious belief.

Climate Change & Christianity

Despising people who belong to other religions, dress differently, or speak other languages; hatred of non-whites; homophobia — all of these are as far from the teachings of Jesus as one can possibly imagine. Yet those hate-filled messages are uttered constantly by such self-important leaders as Franklin Graham and Pat Robertson and are taken to heart by many evangelicals.

Such misguided men are entitled to their opinions, of course, no matter how corrosive and mean spirited they may be. But when such beliefs seek to block essential action on the most pressing problem facing humanity — the destruction of the environment — it is essential to oppose their toxic words.

Deacon McGrane offers this alternative narrative.

The Koch money, and the CIA and other Federal Government money has, for several decades, under the guise of "promoting democracy"  ;) :evil4: (see: National Endowment for fascism Democracy)  been given to "Christian" Churches in the USA and abroad to conflate US Fossil Fuel Gooberment, dirty energy/fascist policies with religion.

It's an old con. The idea is that if, as Hitler said, and had it put on all the belt buckles of the nazi soldiers, that GOT MIT UNS ("God with us" LOL!), then people can be convinced to do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what the Word of God teaches. This way, the oligarchs, whether they be pseudo-Christians or not, laugh all the way to the bank.

Why, for example, do you think that "get prayer back in schools" was organized by hypocrites like "Dr." James Dobson with a call to "See you at the Flag."? Get it? The FLAG is the new symbol for GOT MIT UNS. Corrupted "Christianity", disguised as unrestrained Nationalism IS NOT Christianity, but idolatry.

From the "Manifest Destiny" UNCHRISTIAN Nationalist propaganda that resulted in the murder of millions of Native Americans, wars and racist abuse and murder of minorites  to the "God will solve the Global Warming thing so it's okay to pollute the planet" UNCHRISTIAN dirty energy defending propaganda, our gooberment  has succeeded in getting Americans to WORSHIP THE FLAG because they have been conned into believing that "God" is backing every damned thing (And I am not swearing) our corrupt, profit over people and planet, war loving, dirty energy defending gooberment DOES.

People are not easily convinced to go and fight for whatever or believe destroying their environment and the future for their kids is "okay" unless they think "God is on their side". It is a devilshly clever policy. Too many ignorant people have fallen for it.

The hypocrites do a lot of damage, Az. Which leads me to today's teaching on some of Christ's parables.

Agelbert NOTE: The parables taught by Jesus Christ have been frequently misinterpreted or even used to rationalize doing the opposite of what Christ actually taught. I am posting the following over several days in order to help clear up any misunderstandings among people of good will, along with eliminating self-serving rationalizitions often used by people of bad will.

Matthew 13:1-58

Eight parables are found here. In the first instance the parable is of the sower. The sowing of the seed refers to the Word of God.

The seed, having grown in the good soil, becomes not only one but many believing witnesses cast into the world. Jesus explained that "the good seed are the children of the kingdom".

These parables are given so that we as the children of the kingdom in the world may know that we must expect opposition from the devil and his children.

In these parable, we are given the negative reaction to Christian action.

We must not try to uproot the weeds, representative of the evil ones in the world, because of our inability to judge rightly without the possibility of making a mistake. The ultimate disposition of the evil ones in the world will be accomplished by angels who are going to be sent by the Lord (v. 41) at the consummation of the age. Actually, the angels are designated as the final reapers of the harvest of our labor (v. 39).

Enjoy this Country Western style singing of a Psalm David wrote:

Parable no. 2 (vv. 24-30 the wheat and the tares) and parable no. 7 (the net which catches both good and bad fish) are illustrative of the fact that, as a result of the witnessing of children of the kingdom in this dispensation, there will be both genuine wheat and good fish, as well as tares and bad fish.

Not all who are caught in the net of evangelism are genuinely saved. The unsaved will be made manifest in the Day of Judgment at the consumation of the age.

Neither we nor angels, no matter how hard we try, wil be able to put the devil out of commision until the appointed time. The disciples wanted to pull out the tares planted by the devil, but were told not to do so until harvest time when the tares were going to be uprooted and utterly burned. See Jude v. 9.

Agelbert NOTE: It is one thing to not go out and kill the people you believe are pseudo-Christians dedicated to evil, but that doesn't mean we are not given sufficient discernment to know who they are. I am firmly convinced that Pat Robertson, Vice President Pence (and many other public figures that claim to be "Christians") are in the category of tares and bad fish. You know them by their empathy deficit, despicable, evil, destructive, hateful, war loving, rotten fruit.

Trump gets along great with those hypocrites. Is Trump the same as them?

As for Trump, he doesn't have the remotest idea of what Christianity is, and never has entertained one single thought of accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, except as a pose to con voters.

To non-believers, the difference between the Trumps and Pences of this world is irrelevant because they both obviously are people dominated by evil desires.

But according to Holy Scripture, the Trumps of this world, who never even looked at the seed of the Gospel or were never caught in the Gospel net of sound doctrine, are less guilty than people like Pence, Gorsuch, etc. et al, who drive potential converts to Christianity away with their in-your-face greed, lack of compassion, racism and bigotry while they simultaneously and shamelessly parade their sanctimonious guise of "Christian" beliefs.

Judgment begins in the House of the Lord.

Yep.  :(  Jesus Christ said a thing or two to about how the Pences and Trumps of this world would treat good people:

Quote
John 15 ( ERV -Easy to Read Version)

21 They will do to you whatever they did to me, because you belong to me. They don’t know the one who sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken to the people of the world, they would not be guilty of sin. But now I have spoken to them. So they have no excuse for their sin.

23 “Whoever hates me also hates my Father.

24 I did things among the people of the world that no one else has ever done. If I had not done those things, they would not be guilty of sin. But they have seen what I did, and still they hate me and my Father.

25 But this happened to make clear the full meaning of what is written in their law: ‘They hated me for no reason.'

Empire Files: Chris Hedges & Abby Martin -Trump, Fascism & the Christian  Right

Published on Feb 27, 2017

For the first time in modern history, a fringe wing of Christian extremists have obtained the highest seats of power in the US government—from Mike Pence to Betsy DeVos.

This new development is coupled with the emergence of the Alt Right, the Trump movement, and the rise of fascist movements abroad.

Renowned journalist and author Chris Hedges has embedded himself in what he calls “Christianized Fascism” and warns that this is the biggest danger we face under Trump.

Agelbert NOTE: The Apostate Christian Church in the USA is "Christian" in name only. If Pruitt and the other crooks and liars on the Trump Team (along with Trump himself) are Christians, Hitler was a saint. These Trump cretins give Christianity a black eye!

Wilkerson: Trump's New National Security Advisor Believes in Empire, More Realpolitik than Flynn

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson says General H.R. McMaster might be more restrained about military action, but will support massive budget increase to military and the imperial mission.

Agelbert NOTE: I disagree with Col. Lawrence Wilkerson's belief (and hope) that Trump doesn't actually want to use the military; he does. As Trump's popularity declines, he will most likely try to distract the people from his domestic fascist mayhem with more war.

Joshua Scheer:
We're definitely going to want to talk about that. We're also going to talk about Jeffrey Sterling who is another whistleblower who is still in prison. I believe he is the, at his time, was the fifth person used in history the Espionage Act by President Obama. I want to talk about this intelligence briefing because the president-elect said on Fox News this Sunday, he's a pretty smart guy. We've discussed it in brief.

I want to let our listeners know what this president intelligence checklist was. It started with Kennedy in '61. It was typewritten. It's stamped for president only. It has gone through, obviously, technological innovation. Obama gets it on an iPad, and Trump has kind of said, "I'll get it when anything is new. It'll go through Mike Pence. It'll go through my generals." He said, this is his quote, "If something should change from this point, immediately call me. I'm available at one-minute's notice, but eight years, I don't need that. If something should change, let us know." Talk about this, because I'm sure you've been involved in briefing the president and certainly writing these reports.

John Kiriakou:
Sure.

Joshua Scheer:
How important are they? Some of the intelligence community, one David Bass, I'm thinking, worked for the-

John Kiriakou:
Priess.

Joshua Scheer:

Beast, yes, worked for the State Department, worked for Bush and Clinton as a CIA intelligence officer and talks about how important it is to be informed, and that you're making these decisions and you want to know all the information. Talk about this a little bit, about the president-elect rejecting these intelligence reports.

John Kiriakou:

Yeah, we've never had a president since Kennedy who just outrightly rejected his intelligence briefings. Bill Clinton famously was not briefed by his PDB briefer. PDB is President's Daily Brief, but what the briefer would do is that he would go to the White House every morning at 7 a.m. and drop it off, and Clinton would read it at his leisure. He was only briefed in person twice during his presidency, but Gore was briefed six days a week. Clinton read the briefing later in the day, and so he was informed.

Now, each day's PDB is specifically tailored to the president and to his interests, and so what Trump is reading right now, or what Trump would be reading if he were being briefed is really Obama's briefing. Obama has been steeped in these issues for eight years. I can see how they might seem a little too tactical, too detailed for Trump, but that's not just what Trump said. He didn't say they were too detailed and too tactical. He said he was a smart guy already and he didn't need to be briefed. That's a mistake, unless he is going to just wholesale turnover foreign and intelligence policy to Mike Pence. If Mike Pence is going to be the de facto president on these issues, then okay, I guess there is really no reason to brief Trump. If Trump is going to still have the final word on foreign defense and intelligence policy, I think this is a big mistake.

Joshua Scheer:
Yeah, go on on that a little bit. Obviously, Mike Pence, this guy ... Trump is acting as if this is not even a job. This is something where it's one of the many things he will be doing, certainly has given Pence a lot of power, which is scary. Jeremy Scahill has written about this de facto Christian fascist in power. There has been others who have written about that. What do you make of this? I mean, you've obviously followed politics a long time. Certainly, we've talked about this earlier in the interview, the CIA is probably scared about this, but is to be expected both on ... Obviously, we all have other people on to talk about, the EPA.

We're talking about scared agencies. The EPA right now is ... The Department of Energy, I'm sorry, is hiding people's names who have worked on climate science. They're not codifying the data they have gathered over a number of years to try to say that US States like California saying they're going on alone on immigration, on climate change. I mean, this is a really tumultuous time for everybody. I mean, we talked about it a little bit earlier, but I can't imagine that this is ... I mean, this must be the most experience you've ever seen, right?

John Kiriakou:

Yeah, I've never seen anything like this, and I've been close to several presidents from my CIA time. Even my wife was a senior CIA officer and has been even closer in some cases to presidents than have, and he's never seen anything like this either. I had dinner with a great friend of mine on Saturday night. He was my first boss at the CIA, and he goes back to the Carter administration, and he was of the opinion that this is utterly unprecedented. What makes is so dangerous is that this is not a weak president giving a strong president the authority to handle intelligence policy. This is a strongman who has surrounded himself with generals who is giving a weak vice president the authority to lead intelligence policy.

He said, "It's a disaster waiting to happen," and he feared that the only time the American people are going to understand what a terrible mistake this is, is when we're the victims of a terrorist attack on American soil, and people are going to want to know why the president wasn't up on this, why the president didn't order countermeasures, why the president dropped the ball. I fear that's the direction we're going in.

Political correctness: how the right invented a phantom enemy

For 25 years, invoking this vague and ever-shifting nemesis has been a favourite tactic of the right – and Donald Trump’s victory is its greatest triumph   >:(

SNIPPET 1:

In truth, these crusaders against political correctness       were every bit as political as their opponents.

As Jane Mayer documents in her book, Dark Money: the Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right, Bloom and D’Souza were funded by networks of conservative donors – particularly the Koch, Olin and Scaife families – who had spent the 1980s building programmes that they hoped would create a new “counter-intelligentsia”.

SNIPPET 2:

Trump has also continued to cry PC in response to criticism. When an interviewer from Politico asked a Trump transition team member why Trump was appointing so many lobbyists and political insiders, despite having pledged to “drain the swamp” of them, the source said that “one of the most refreshing parts of … the whole Trump style is that he does not care about political correctness.”

Apparently it would have been politically correct to hold him to his campaign promises.

Farewell, America

No matter how the rest of the world looked at us on Nov. 7, they will now look at us differently.

By Neal Gabler | November 10, 2016

America died on Nov. 8, 2016, not with a bang or a whimper, but at its own hand via electoral suicide. We the people chose a man who has shredded our values, our morals, our compassion, our tolerance, our decency, our sense of common purpose, our very identity — all the things that, however tenuously, made a nation out of a country.

Whatever place we now live in is not the same place it was on Nov. 7. No matter how the rest of the world looked at us on Nov. 7, they will now look at us differently. We are likely to be a pariah country. And we are lost for it. As I surveyed the ruin of that country this gray Wednesday morning, I found weary consolation in W.H. Auden’s poem, September 1, 1939, which concludes:

Quote
BY Neal Gabler | November 8, 2016

“Defenseless under the night
 Our world in stupor lies;
 Yet, dotted everywhere,
 Ironic points of light
 Flash out wherever the Just
 Exchange their messages:
 May I, composed like them
 Of Eros and of dust,
 Beleaguered by the same
 Negation and despair,
 Show an affirming flame.”

I hunt for that affirming flame.

This generally has been called the “hate election” because everyone professed to hate both candidates. It turned out to be the hate election because, and let’s not mince words, of the hatefulness of the electorate. In the years to come, we will brace for the violence, the anger, the racism, the misogyny, the xenophobia, the nativism, the white sense of grievance that will undoubtedly be unleashed now that we have destroyed the values that have bound us.

Quote
We all knew these hatreds lurked under the thinnest veneer of civility. That civility finally is gone.

We all knew these hatreds lurked under the thinnest veneer of civility. That civility finally is gone. In its absence, we may realize just how imperative that politesse was. It is the way we managed to coexist.

If there is a single sentence that characterizes the election, it is this: “He says the things I’m thinking.” That may be what is so terrifying. Who knew that so many tens of millions of white Americans were thinking unconscionable things about their fellow Americans? Who knew that tens of millions of white men felt so emasculated by women and challenged by minorities? Who knew that after years of seeming progress on race and gender, tens of millions of white Americans lived in seething resentment, waiting for a demagogue to arrive who would legitimize their worst selves and channel them into political power? Perhaps we had been living in a fool’s paradise. Now we aren’t.

This country has survived a civil war, two world wars, and a great depression. There are many who say we will survive this, too. Maybe we will, but we won’t survive unscathed. We know too much about each other to heal. No more can we pretend that we are exceptional or good or progressive or united. We are none of those things. Nor can we pretend that democracy works and that elections have more or less happy endings. Democracy only functions when its participants abide by certain conventions, certain codes of conduct and a respect for the process.

Quote
No more can we pretend that we are exceptional or good or progressive or united. We are none of those things.

The virus that kills democracy is extremism because extremism disables those codes. Republicans have disrespected the process for decades. They have regarded any Democratic president as illegitimate. They have proudly boasted of preventing popularly elected Democrats from effecting policy and have asserted that only Republicans have the right to determine the nation’s course. They have worked tirelessly to make sure that the government cannot govern and to redefine the purpose of government as prevention rather than effectuation. In short, they haven’t believed in democracy for a long time, and the media never called them out on it.

Democracy can’t cope with extremism. Only violence and time can defeat it. The first is unacceptable, the second takes too long. Though Trump is an extremist, I have a feeling that he will be a very popular president and one likely to be re-elected by a substantial margin, no matter what he does or fails to do. That’s because ever since the days of Ronald Reagan, rhetoric has obviated action, speechifying has superseded governing.

Trump was absolutely correct when he bragged that he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and his supporters wouldn’t care. It was a dictator’s ugly vaunt , but one that recognized this election never was about policy or economics or the “right path/wrong path,” or even values. It was about venting. So long as Trump vented their grievances, his all-white supporters didn’t care about anything else. He is smart enough to know that won’t change in the presidency. In fact, it is only likely to intensify. White America, Trump’s America, just wants to hear its anger bellowed. This is one time when the Bully Pulpit will be literal.

The media can’t be let off the hook for enabling an authoritarian to get to the White House. Long before he considered a presidential run, he was a media creation — a regular in the gossip pages, a photo on magazine covers, the bankrupt (morally and otherwise) mogul who hired and fired on The Apprentice. When he ran, the media treated him not as a candidate, but as a celebrity, and so treated him differently from ordinary pols. The media gave him free publicity, trumpeted his shenanigans, blasted out his tweets, allowed him to phone in his interviews, fell into his traps and generally kowtowed until they suddenly discovered that this joke could actually become president.

Just as Trump has shredded our values, our nation and our democracy, he has shredded the media. In this, as in his politics, he is only the latest avatar of a process that began long before his candidacy. Just as the sainted Ronald Reagan created an unbridgeable chasm between rich and poor that the Republicans would later exploit against Democrats, conservatives delegitimized mainstream journalism so that they could fill the vacuum.

Quote
With Trump’s election, I think that the ideal of an objective, truthful journalism is dead, never to be revived.

Retiring conservative talk show host Charlie Sykes complained that after years of bashing from the right wing, the mainstream media no longer could perform their function as reporters, observers, fact dispensers, and even truth tellers, and he said we needed them. Like Goebbels before them, conservatives understood that they had to create their own facts, their own truths, their own reality. They have done so, and in so doing effectively destroyed the very idea of objectivity. Trump can lie constantly only because white America has accepted an Orwellian sense of truth the truth pulled inside out.

With Trump’s election, I think that the ideal of an objective, truthful journalism is dead, never to be revived. Like Nixon and Sarah Palin before him, Trump ran against the media, boomeranging off the public’s contempt for the press. He ran against what he regarded as media elitism and bias, and he ran on the idea that the press disdained working-class white America. Among the many now-widening divides in the country, this is a big one, the divide between the media and working-class whites, because it creates a Wild West of information – a media ecology in which nothing can be believed except what you already believe.

With the mainstream media so delegitimized — a delegitimization for which they bear a good deal of blame, not having had the courage to take on lies and expose false equivalencies — they have very little role to play going forward in our politics. I suspect most of them will surrender to Trumpism — if they were able to normalize Trump as a candidate, they will no doubt normalize him as president.

Cable news may even welcome him as a continuous entertainment and ratings booster. And in any case, like Reagan, he is bulletproof. The media cannot touch him, even if they wanted to. Presumably, there will be some courageous guerillas in the mainstream press, a kind of Resistance, who will try to fact-check him. But there will be few of them, and they will be whistling in the wind. Trump, like all dictators, is his own truth.

What’s more, Trump already has promised to take his war on the press into courtrooms and the halls of Congress. He wants to loosen libel protections, and he has threatened Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos of Amazon with an antitrust suit. Individual journalists have reason to fear him as well. He has already singled out NBC’s Katy Tur, perhaps the best of the television reporters, so that she needed the Secret Service to escort her from one of his rallies. Jewish journalists who have criticized Trump have been subjected to vicious anti-Semitism and intimidation from the alt-right. For the press, this is likely to be the new normal in an America in which white supremacists, neo-Nazi militias, racists, sexists, homophobes and anti-Semites have been legitimized by a new president who “says what I’m thinking.” It will be open season.

This converts the media from reporters to targets, and they have little recourse. Still, if anyone points the way forward, it may be New York Times columnist David Brooks. Brooks is no paragon. He always had seemed to willfully neglect modern Republicanism’s incipient fascism (now no longer incipient), and he was an apologist for conservative self-enrichment and bigotry. But this campaign season, Brooks pretty much dispensed with politics. He seemed to have arrived at the conclusion that no good could possibly come of any of this and retreated into spirituality. What Brooks promoted were values of mutual respect, a bolder sense of civic engagement, an emphasis on community and neighborhood, and overall a belief in trickle-up decency rather than trickle-down economics. He is not hopeful, but he hasn’t lost all hope.

For those of us now languishing in despair, this may be a prescription for rejuvenation. We have lost the country, but by refocusing, we may have gained our own little patch of the world and, more granularly, our own family. For journalists, Brooks may show how political reporting, which, as I said, is likely to be irrelevant in the Trump age, might yield to a broader moral context in which one considers the effect that policy, strategy and governance have not only on our physical and economic well-being but also on our spiritual well-being. In a society that is likely to be fractious and odious, we need a national conversation on values. The media could help start it.

But the disempowered media may have one more role to fill: They must bear witness. Many years from now, future generations will need to know what happened to us and how it happened. They will need to know how disgruntled white Americans, full of self-righteous indignation, found a way to take back a country they felt they were entitled to and which they believed had been lost. They will need to know about the ugliness and evil that destroyed us as a nation after great men like Lincoln and Roosevelt guided us through previous crises and kept our values intact. They will need to know, and they will need a vigorous, engaged, moral media to tell them. They will also need us.

We are not living for ourselves anymore in this country. Now we are living for history.

Agelbert NOTE: Great article, but, unlike the author, many millions of Americans, like myself, KNEW about this suicidal trajectory, of which the ubiquitous racism is but one symptom of America's moral decay.

Neal Gabler is a good man of principle. He is clear on what is right and what is wrong. However, as the reality of the WAY things REALLY are in the USA struck him like a kick in the groin, Neal Gabler's surprise is evidence that he was a victim of white privileged liberal wishful thinking. None of the following was a surprise to me and millions of other Americans of mixed ancestry that know the score.

I have been warning about it to deaf ears for over a decade.

Also, unlike Neal Gabler, I dated the final nail in the coffin of American Democracy much earlier than this election.

I dated it to when THIS GUY had the nomination for VP stolen from him so the Truman party hack could do the bidding of the M.I.C. when Roosevelt died.
But, you know what? The abysmally stupid and morally corruptive embrace of greed, xenophobia and racism is the LEAST of our worries as a people in this perfect storm of Wall Street 'dial a reality' that so many fools and knaves wish to celebrate.
