Even though the revived Impact/EV1 program had gone dark, somehow, as automakers around the globe began to wake up and smell the electricity, the entity that the automakers referred to as the “oilies” awakened as well, sniffing competition in the wind. It may be that the oil companies had simply stretched out with their Sith sense, but there was EV development taking place at virtually all the major automakers, and an alliance of the Big 3 (GM, Ford, Chrysler) had been formed to develop a more workable EV battery … with federal government participation. That’s when the Department of Dirty Tricks was engaged. But not at the bequest of GM. The auto giant had been doing its best to delay the government mandates. But as Shnayerson characterizes it, GM had been lobbying CARB pretty squarely, explaining where they were at and trying to buy time for the tech to mature. The carmaker objected to what it termed “invention on a schedule.”

The oilies, however, played a very different game. They went low-ball right out of the gate and employed strategies such as sponsoring so-called grassroots consumer groups that waved a flag about how EVs could actually make the air dirtier … in spite of a CARB study refuting the assertion. Even in the ’90s, any electricity used to charge EVs would have caused a net drop in pollutants in spite of a dirtier grid than today, due in part to the far greater efficiency of an electric motor over its gasoline counterpart (90% vs 20%). The oil-funded groups lobbied against both the mandate as well as various EV kickstart programs sponsored by the utilities. The anti-mandate movement gained further support when Governor Pete Wilson — who was running for President — was told in no uncertain terms that support in key states would be absent unless the California mandate was altered. Indeed, the 1998 mandate would end up getting rescheduled.


All in all, the technology developed during the Impact/EV1 program was nothing short of remarkable. A Motor Trend article of the time characterized the tech as “unparalleled breakthroughs.” Here are some of the significant accomplishments of what has been characterized as the most technically ambitious program in GM’s history:

֍ The Impact/EV1 was designed from the ground up
֍ Refinements to the AC induction motor
֍ A workable DC to AC inverter that powered the motor
֍ A breakthrough battery design using alloys (NMH)
֍ Implementation of a rudimentary battery cooling system
֍ Regenerative braking
֍ 8 second 0–60 MPH time
֍ A body design with a record-breaking .195 drag coefficient. 45% less drag and 40% lighter than the average gas car
֍ Aluminum frame, plastic body panels
֍ Electric brakes (80,000 lines of software code allowed for 100 fewer brake parts)
֍ Covered wheels to reduce drag
֍ First use of a heat pump in a vehicle
֍ An inductive charger to reduce the chance of shock
֍ A network of over 1,000 high-speed “MagneChargers” in homes and public locations
֍ 23 new patents granted
֍ First time in GM history a woman headed one of the production departments

In addition to that impressive list, the isolated Impact/EV1 program had at least one staffer on board with deep insight as to what GM had achieved. Take a look at this passage from Shnayerson’s book characterizing John Dabels’ point of view:

And yet the electric car failed to hit critical mass at that point in time. Those who have seen Who Killed The Electric Car? know that the automakers ultimately sued the State of California, won the suit, and the CARB mandates of the day were repealed. Shortly thereafter, GM stopped production of the EV1, and in fact recalled all the vehicles and destroyed most of them.

Vespa told us last year at this time that it was working on an electric scooter. This year, the company brought its electric offering — the Vespa Elettrica — to the Milan Motorcycle Show, where it revealed lots of details about its latest zero-emissions scooter except for the price. The Vespa Elettrica will be available sometime next year, but the company has not said exactly when.

The Holthausen Group, a Dutch gasoline supplier, claims it built a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Model S with a range of 620 miles.

The powertrain "hack," as the company described it, does not compromise interior space since the hydrogen tanks reside in "cavities."

Lightning Systems Now Accepting Pre-Orders For Ford Transit All-Electric Upfit

Pre-orders are now being taken by Lightning Systems for its new all-electric LightningElectric upfit system for the Ford Transit, the company has revealed.

The new conversion offering will first be available on Ford Transits in the heavy-duty class (10,360-pound gross vehicle weight rating), with purchase available through Ford Motor Company’s eQVM program. All service and conversions are performed by Ford QVM-certified dealers and upfitters.

Altogether, the price for a conversion in the US is between $69,000 and $89,000, depending upon whether one opts for the 50-mile range or the 100-mile range. Deliveries are currently slated to begin early next year. Installation reportedly only takes a few hours time.

Varying based on the options chosen, charging with a 50 kW DC fast charger can be fully completed in under a half-hour, and payload capacity can be as high as 4,000 lbs.

London’s T-Charge Now In Effect — £21.50 A Day (Total) For Old, Polluting Cars    ;D

My view is that politicians are far too slow to act, and the measures that they propose are much too far in the future to be of any relevance for today’s problems. The government talk about a vague ban on ICE vehicles in about 30 years’ time. At that time, it will be much too late, and they will not even be in power to take any responsibility for it. Such proposals are mere “window dressing”, that do not even begin to respond to the environmental crisis in which we are living today. They make it appear that an indifferent government have a commitment to improvement, which, in reality, they entirely lack.

Sadiq Khan is, commendably, introducing this measure today, with a promise of more to come. This is probably in the shortest timescale that can practically be achieved, to allow time for alternatives to be implemented. London is moving towards electric taxis and buses, and the tube trains of course are already electric. We all know that EVs are the future, but we need the future right now. Let us hope that this positive action proves to be the small pebble thrown in the mountain that causes an avalanche of beneficial change.

Solar-Powered Sion Completes Successful Test-Drive Tour  ;D

Sono Motors is approaching the end of a successful test drive tour of its new Sion all-electric vehicle. The tour has stopped off at 12 cities in six countries throughout Europe, and it will make its final stop in Zurich from the 24th to the 27th of October. The tour has been a great way of introducing people to the new vehicle, and in offering them the chance to take one for a test drive.

There have been quite a few videos of the cars in action published on YouTube, but our favorite is this video of the first Sion driver in Stuttgart. It runs through the main features of the car and shows what it feels like to drive.

As was unveiled in July, the Sion is the first electric car that can be recharged to a notable degree through solar power. There are 330 solar cells fitted to the exterior of the vehicle, and in good conditions they are able to provide almost 30 kilometers of additional range in addition to the 250 km range of the battery. The car is priced at €16,000, and Sono Motors has already received almost 2,500 pre-orders for the vehicles. The target is to reach 5,000 pre-orders so that the car can go into volume production, and it seems like things are on track to achieving this.

Sono Motors has also exceeded its own expectations for the crowdinvesting campaign it recently ran. The initial target of just over €1 million has been exceeded by an incredible 46%, reaching a total of €1,457,653. The company currently has a valuation of €60 million.

With the successful test drive tour, a growing number of pre-orders and a very healthy level of investment under its belt, the Sonos team dream of an affordable, mass-production, solar-powered electric car is getting close to a reality.

The train can move at a speed of 70 km/h and can carry up to 500 passengers. Powered by electricity, the train can travel 25 kilometers with a 10-minute charge. The key in the future for crowded cities like Singapore may be autonomous cars and ride-sharing services. In theory, one autonomous car can replace up to 10 privately owned vehicles, which sit idle more than 90% of the time during the work day. Instead of taking up space in a parking lot, an autonomous car could be busy ferrying others from place to place all day long, greatly reducing the number of private cars needed on city streets.

BYD Introduces New Electric Midibus, 21 Ordered For North Holland

BYD is aggressively expanding around the world as it continues to add new product offerings based on its lithium-iron-phosphate technology. It has introduced new electric forklifts, medium-duty trucks, and heavy-duty trucks, and that expansion continues to gain traction with customers around the world.

This week, BYD simultaneously announced its new Midibus at the Busworld show in Belgium. At the same time, the company shared that it has already secured its first European order for the new vehicle. Connexxion has ordered 21 units of the new BYD offering, which will be deployed to the north part of North Holland. The 21 Midibuses will put into service running a daytime bus route.

The announcement highlights just how routine electric buses are becoming. The technology is well established and has been proven in routes around the world. The only game being played now is the waiting game as transit agencies and fleet managers in country after country realize just how much money they can save and how much cleaner their fleets can be with electric buses. Both are especially pronounced in comparison to diesel buses, which clog city air with cancer-causing particulate emissions.

The order for the new 8.75 meter buses is scheduled to be fulfilled in the middle of 2018, after which the buses will immediately be put into service. The buses are equivalent to run-of-the-mill transit buses with two doors, seating for 26, and total capacity for 50 passengers.

Looking beyond BYD, this order represents one of the largest pure electric midibus orders in Europe. The order and many others like in around the world demonstrate that electric buses have truly come of age and are increasingly tackling emissions in cities.

Motivated, activist citizens around the world should see this as a flagpole in the ground that can be referred to when attempting to sway local transit authorities and fleet operators to convert fleets to electricity. Positive change does not happen on its own, but rather, it requires action. At the Climate Launchpad Grand Final last week, motivated motivational speaker Danny Kennedy laid down some Socratic wisdom about enacting change:

Motiv Power Systems Deploying 2 All-Electric Garbage Trucks In Los Angeles

As part of an ongoing demonstration project being funded by the California Energy Commission, Motiv Power Systems will be deploying a further 2 all-electric, zero-emissions garbage trucks in the City of Los Angeles.

This news follows the earlier deployment of California’s first all-electric refuse/garbage vehicle (ERV) in Sacramento.

The trucks headed to Los Angeles will reportedly possess a payload capacity of 9 tons and 1,000 pounds per cubic yard of compaction, and will be outfitted with battery packs of up to 212 kilowatt-hours (kWh)  :o  ;D in size, enough to last through the work day.

Considering the great potential for all-electric garbage trucks when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution reductions — their start-stop operations and heavy weights make them ideal vehicles for regenerative braking — the news is notable. There are perhaps no other operations out there where electric vehicles stand to do so much good as with regard to garbage trucks.

TU/e Team Wins World Solar Challenge “Cruiser Class” Solar Car Race For 3rd Time

The “Cruiser Class” is the division for solar cars that could be practical in the real world — owing to seating capacity, range, etc.

Very impressively, the Eindhoven team’s solar car transported 5 people (for much of the trip) around 3,022 kilometers (1,878 miles) while only using 48 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. The trip was completed by the team with an average of 3.4 persons per kilometer traveled.

Cold-Pressed Juices To Go: Viva Raw's Electric Tuk Tuk Hits the Road

iva Raw is expanding its reach by taking its cold-pressed juices on the road. The company has invested in an electric tuk-tuk — a three-wheeled vehicle used as a taxi in countries such as Thailand — to transport its offerings around town.

It is the only one of its kind in the Carolinas, says Scott Harris, owner. “It gives us a lot more flexibility,” he says.

Viva Raw got its start in October 2011. It currently operates a permanent location at the 7th St. Public Market in uptown Charlotte.

Viva Raw offers a variety of fresh, cold-pressed juices featuring primary ingredients from beets, carrots and citrus.

There’s also options such as the Green Harvest, with cucumber, apple, kale, collard greens, celery, lemon and parsley, or the Almond Bliss, with almond milk, bananas, almond butter, dates, cinnamon and cacao.

Raw foods including granolas and cashew-based cheeses are available as well.

The addition of the tuk-tuk makes it possible to expand its reach, with stops across Charlotte throughout the week. That includes time at The Green in uptown, Skyhouse and Pure Pizza, among others, Harris says.

He says the tuk-tuk has helped increase sales by roughly 15% in its first few months of operation; he’s already considering adding a second one.

It cost roughly half what it would have taken to invest into a second storefront, Harris adds. He declined to share specifics.


“We sell directly to the consumer. That means we have to get pretty creative,” he says.

For Harris, Viva Raw has provided an opportunity to carve out his own business niche in the Queen City.

He started in banking and finance, but found juicing a number of years ago at a friend’s suggestion. The results led him to explore bringing it to Charlotte.

More and more people are making changes to their diet and lifestyle, with juicing becoming more common. Some customers used the products to get an extra serving of fruits and veggies in concentrated form, while others use the products for juice cleanses.

“Little by little, it’s caught on,” he says.

For those unfamiliar with those names, Temasek is an investment outfit based out of Singapore; ENGIE is a France-based energy giant; Sumitomo Corporation is a Japan-based business group that was founded all the way back in 1615 by a bookstore-owning Buddhist priest; and Generation Investment Management is a London-based investment management group founded by Al Gore and David Blood.

This group joins Gogoro’s existing investors, which include Panasonic, Samuel Yin, and others.

As far as those unfamiliar with the name Gogoro itself, its innovative battery swapping network has been deployed in concert with its Smartscooter EV product in Taiwan. Gogoro launched its Smartscooter EV and “Energy Network” in Taipei in 2015 and then across Taiwan. It also grew in Europe (Berlin and Paris) through the Coup e-scooter sharing program.

To date, there have been over 34,000 Gogoro Smartscooter EVs sold worldwide, and more than 400 GoStation battery swapping stations installed. Here are a few more facts:

Nearly 100 million kilometers ridden by customers

17,000 batteries swapped per day (6 million total batteries swapped)

4,135,000 liters of gasoline saved plus 8 million kilograms less CO2 emitted

The CEO of Gogoro, Horace Luke, commented on the news: “One of the greatest challenges of our time is transitioning our cities to a smarter and more sustainable energy and transportation infrastructure. Gogoro provides a new approach for cities to embrace sustainable energy through a smart connected infrastructure and battery swapping system that has demonstrated success across Taiwan and Berlin. Electric cars win on energy efficiency vs hydrogen, gasoline, diesel: analysis  ;D

If you want to drive the absolute cleanest car possible – and if you’re reading this site, we’re willing to wager that you do – then you need to calculate the total well-to-wheels energy use of the car and everything you put into its tank or battery.

When it comes to comparing types of vehicles – hydrogen, standard gasoline and diesel, or battery electric – then a full accounting of the averages reveals that electric cars are the total efficiency winners.    

At least, they are in a new study from the UK-based Transport & Environment.

The results are not even close.

Starting with all renewable energy for either charging or to process the gasoline or hydrogen, all-electric vehicles managing an overall efficiency rating of 73 percent, compared to 22 percent for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and just 13 percent for standard fossil fuel vehicles using gasoline made with the Fischer Tropsch process.

Of course, there are many details that need to be picked apart here.

For example, T&E says that fossil fuel vehicles lose 70 percent of the energy in their sloshing tanks because of inefficient engines.

That may be a good average, but Toyota made a big point of saying that its latest Prius has a 40 percent thermal efficiency, which means 60 percent energy loss, not 70 percent.

Also, the efficiency rate at which an EV charges also plays a big role in the well-to-wheels efficiency.

Lastly, given T&E’s location, we assume it is basing the numbers in the study on the European electric grid and European MPG figures. Oddly, we can’t find the original T&E report to confirm this guess, but if you do, please let is know in the comments.

UK's Transport & Environment says that electric cars are the most efficient.

Of course, any study like this is not necessarily applicable to your personal situation.

As we discussed when we looked at similar comparisons of EVs and hybrids in the U.S., there are a lot of regional differences – to say nothing of the variations in your specific vehicle.

Given all those minor and major variables, in some rare cases (i.e., for three percent of U.S. drivers), driving an electric vehicle is not the most efficient option.

Even so, when you look at the averages, you’re most likely going to be better off plugging in  than gassing up.    If anyone says otherwise, ask them to show you the math.

The issue stopped being "energy efficiency" around 1970. That is around the time that human civilization GUARANTEED MORE than 1.5 degrees centigrade of baked in Global Warming. IOW, AFTER THAT, we entered the existential threat territory.

This is a war for survival. No country, when they are in a WAR FOR SURVIVAL, says they must surrender to the enemy because the machines they need to build to SURVIVE are not efficient enough. Business as usual is a stupid, irrational and totally unnecessary surrender to the Climate Change enemy of the biosphere in general, and our species in particular.

They are off their rockers. We transition out of polluting fuels or we will perish, PERIOD.

Nissan LEAF Replacement Battery Cost = $5,499

This story about the cost of replacement battery for a Nissan LEAF was first published by Gas2.

When modern electric cars first appeared on the scene circa 2010, lots of people asked, “How much does it cost to replace the battery?” Nissan has given a definitive answer to that question, but not many people are aware of this. If you own a 2011 to 2015 Nissan LEAF, replacing the battery will cost you exactly $5,499, plus installation, which the company estimates will take about 3 hours. Owners of 2011 and 2012 cars must also add $225 for a special adapter kit to retrofit the new battery to their cars.

Hey, that’s not too bad, is it? After all, take your Belchfire 5000 to your local dealer and ask them how much it will cost to replace the internal combustion engine if it throws a rod and pukes oil all over itself. You would be lucky to get a new engine for a paltry $5,500.

There are a couple of stipulations you should be aware of. First, you must own the car that is having the battery replaced. Second, if you have a loan outstanding on the car, you will need to get the lender’s approval for the swap. Third, the original battery goes back to Nissan for recycling or use in a grid storage system. You can’t keep it and use it as a coffee table in your living room. Nissan assigns the old battery a value of $1,000.

You can finance the purchase of the new battery through Nissan if you wish. The company says to figure on a monthly payment of around $100. Once the new battery is paid for, you own it. It is not a lease or a rental arrangement. The replacement battery will have the benefit of all the latest improvements, including cooling upgrades. The new battery is what Nissan calls its “lizard battery,” meaning it is not as susceptible to early degradation if used in a hot climate.

The warranty on the new battery is the same as it is in a brand new LEAF — 8 years/100,000 miles against defects and 5 years/60,000 miles against capacity loss. “These replacement batteries are the same battery found in 2015 LEAF vehicles, which are also on sale now at Nissan dealers. As a replacement, this battery is expected to provide similar range and charging characteristics as the battery offered since the launch of the LEAF in 2010,” Nissan says.
