AG, this is a brilliant letter and quite specific in answering the question they posed. Of course, as you already know, they have no interest in the answer. Only in being able to say they asked the question, in best bureaucratese passive voice. ("To the question, 'How Can We Improve This site,' we received 416 response which are tabulated in Exhibit A by subject, then ranked in order of usefulness...")

This is right on time as I just signed up for Part B and am trying to assess which way to go for Supplemental. My wife is 10 years younger and doesn't qualify yet. Any wisdom you can impart from. your searches is appreciated.

Thank you.

My wife is also ten years younger, so we are in the same health insurance boat, so to speak. I'll pass along to you any supplemental plan info I find that can help keep your premiums down as much as possible. I know you are in Virginia and not a retired Federal aparatchik like me ;D, but the info on the plans I have access to may be of use to you.

In regard to that, as soon as I got on Medicare, my Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plan became supplemental for me, and continued to be primary for my wife.

I saved some money a couple of years ago when the Federal Government forced them to start the "Self Plus One" plans with the same coverage as "Self and Family", but a lower monthly premium. Always look for the "Self Plus One" 🧐 plan option in your favored supplemental plan, if it is available.

BCBS FEHB (Federal Employees Health Benefits) have had the "Standard" and the "Basic" plans for decades. The "Standard" costs more but allows you to go outside of "Preferred Providers" (PPO) for care and still be covered. If you are in an area where most of the doctors are PPO, like here, the "Basic" plan is a better deal.

I was on the "Standard" for a many years, but switched to the less costly "Basic" plan five or six years ago.

BCBS FEHB initiated a new health insurance plan last year called "Blue Focus". The "Blue Focus" plan is $140 cheaper than "Basic" (monthly premiums for 2020) BUT, it has $1000 deductible (Self Plus One - $500 per person) up front. And that ain't all. It gets worse. It also gets rather ugly as to out-of-pocket expenses if a hospitalization beyond Medicare coverage limits is required (YOU PAY 30% of "whatever BCBS allows the 😈 hospital to say the cost of this or that is".).

Yeah, the old 30% trick happens in the "Basic" plan too, but not on hospitalization. I have no plans to be hospitalized, but having the 30% of hellspital 😈 hospital costs Sword of Damocles hanging over one's head is unwise for anyone, not just the penny pinching frugal poor folks like me.

BCBS in Virginia apparently calls themselves ANTHEM. I don't know a thing about them except what I found on a brief search today using the Ashburn, Virginia (Loudon County) 20147 zip code: Anthem Health Plans of Virginia, Inc.. I don't know if that is where you reside but it is probably close enough to give you a good idea of what is available from them in your area.

They ask a bunch of questions to allegedly help you find the "best" plan for you. Their job is, of course, to suck you in. You are an old hand at dealing with people trying to game you, so I'm sure you will know what to do to get all the information you need from them without giving them information about you that they have no business knowing.

Rather than a short brochure with a plan summary, I prefer to view a detailed brochure/document, on each health insurance plan I am considering contracting for, so I can wade through it to learn about what is and what is not covered, in addition to copays, deductibles, doctor access and so on. In my cursory search I did not see anything but short summaries of the supplemental plans. I'm sure you can get the detailed versions, but I guess it takes some digging.

Here's the rassle dazzle quicky BCBS FEHB 2020 "BENEFITS AT A GLANCE" comparison.

This is the 2019 "Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® Service Benefit Plan" document covering the "Standard" and "Basic" plans (They won't publish the detailed 2020 info until around the 10th of November when "Open Season" starts). That kind of detail is what I want to know about to make sure I know the dollars and cents score, even if I admittedly suffer from glazed over eyes when wading though this behemoth.

Here's a more general list of Medicare supplemental plans from various Health Insurance providers for the same zip code.

NOTE: I am going to repost this reply in the "Corporate Profits over Patient in the Health Care Field" topic thread so we can discuss plans there as time goes by. By the way, there is an excellent brief video by Thom Hartmann explaining how Shrub got the "supplemental Medicare" gravy train for Health Insurance greedballs going. Trump is, as expected, following in Shrub's Republican 'squeeze the poor and middle class to further enrich the thieving rich' footsteps.

Congresswoman Anna Eshoo 👍 is trying to get a law passed forcing the Medicare Supplemental Plan Providers to clearly state what is NOT covered (which unfortunately will be DOA under Moscow Mitch  >:(). You can see why, when I did my cursory search, I did not find what is NOT covered. It's all part of the SCAM that Shrub started.

After reading through the various headlines in your comprehensive coverage of important news for October 20,2019, the following quote from an article just posted in The Intercept came to mind:

“Just as we had long taken for granted the stability of the planet, we have likewise taken for granted the stability of the human species.” -- Bill McKibben

Agelbert NOTE: Surly, I was at the MyMedicare.gov web site looking over supplemental plans and costs. I have Medicare part A and B. I also have Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Self Plus One health insurance, so Carmen and I are pretty well covered.
That said, BCBS raises their premium much more than the U.S. Government published inflation rate every single year. So, around this time each year, I check to see if there is a way I can pay less per month.

I went through the costs of various hospital episodes a Medicare participant might have to go through and pay through the nose for. I was not happy with their numbers, even if they are far below the mind traumatizing $100,000 plus charges some people have incurred from brief hospital stays.

They asked me to take a survey and I did. The web site is satisfactory in that you can find, without much effort, the answers they provide to coverage specifics. However, it has a serious flaw.

At the end of the survey they asked about what they could do to improve. So, I told them, in my typical polite way.

Enjoy:

"How can we improve Medicare.gov?"

Ocrober 20, 2019

Educate people about the average costs a person on Medicare must pay out of pocket for ER visits and/or inpatient hospital stays. IOW, be dollars and cents explicit about costs NOT covered by Medicare.

Anyone can see that supplemental health insurance must be paid in advance to keep a person on Medicare, who is increasingly subject to hospitalization, out of the poorhouse.

You need to be very specific about what those supplemental plans (e.g. Medigap, etc.) cover in comparison to the premiums they charge. Your boilerplate explanation of who pays what for a $24,000 heart attack episode at a hospital, along with the average total cost for heart failure, hip or knee replacement and so on, is not specific enough. I'm sure the lawyers like it (and probably crafted it for you), which means it is useless for a person on Medicare trying to estimate hospitalization costs not covered.

I suggest you give examples of a 10, 20 30, on up to 120 day stay in a hospital detailing the costs of what Medicare covers and what the most common supplemental health insurance plans cover, item by hospital accounting department listed item. You have that detailed information. It is high time you started sharing it.

The way this program is set up now, instead of putting the responsibility for costs on the hospital when a person exceeds Medicare coverage limits, a patient hospitalized beyond the arbitrary coverage limits is facing bankruptcy. The hospital has an INCENTIVE (see: moral hazard) to keep a patient there as long as possible, instead of striving to get them healthy as soon as possible. This is WRONG. Hospitals are supposed to be about taking care of people, not gouging them for extra profit. On top of the physical trauma a person hospitalized has, they and their loved ones are being arbitrarily saddled with the mental trauma of potentially skyrocketing hospital costs.

Don't tell me the hospital administrators, accountants, assorted bean counters, doctors, nurses, drug companies and "health" insurance corporations are "suffering" from high hospital costs. Medicare participants are the ones suffering from hospital greed, not hospital "needs". The government should be cracking down on "administrative" costs corruption in hospitals, instead of looking the other way as they raise their "costs" annually at MULTIPLES of the U.S. Government published inflation rate.

It is not your job to champion supplemental health insurance plans that exist for the specific purpose of profiting off of elderly Medicare participants frightened into paying for them, often by sacrificing adequate nutrition. Yes, that is exactly what you are doing when you calmly throw a cost figure like $24,000 for a brief hospitalization at the average American.

Your job is let people know, in no uncertain terms, what those supplemental plans will cost them COMPARED, dollar for dollar, with the coverage they provide.

PLease do your job.

By Charles Hugh Smith

Quote
If you don't change the way "money" is created and distributed, you change nothing. Did the thousands of pages of financial regulations passed after the 2008-09 debacle reverse wealth and income inequality? The answer is no, wealth inequality is rising even faster after all the feel-good "reforms." The net result of the "reforms" is the costs of compliance for banks went up substantially, and that regulatory moat simply pushed risky lending outside the banking system.

In other words, the sources of systemic instability and wealth inequality weren't even touched by the "reforms." If the financial system were actually stable, why was the Federal Reserve only able to "normalize" interest rates and its bloated balance sheet for a few months after a decade of "growth"? Why is the Fed reverting to "emergency measures" again after a few brief months of "normalizing"?

If all these "reforms" were worth more than a bucket of spit, why isn't wealth inequality reversing?

Here's the way our "money" system works: banks borrow trillions of dollars into existence and loan it to debt serfs at high rates of interest. Central banks create "money" out of thin air and distribute it to the very top of the wealth-power pyramid: banks, financiers and corporations.

The only way to change this corrupt, exploitive system that generates inequality as its only possible output is to eliminate central banks and fractional reserve banking, and ban the aggregation of "too big to fail" entities: a system of 1,000 small banks is structurally far less vulnerable than five mega-banks that are tightly bound to virtually every risk-on asset in the entire system.

if you don't change the way "money" is created and distributed, you change nothing.

Since we're incapable of changing the sources of financial instability, fragility and inequality (because it would destabilize those benefiting from the status quo), we're doomed to watch our social and political systems decay and implode.

True.

True. It won't be long now.

California to end its use of 😈 private, 💵🎩 for-profit prisons
Source: Associated Press

by: DON THOMPSON and AMY TAXIN, Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will ban the use of for-profit, private detention facilities, including those under contract to the federal government to hold immigrants awaiting deportation hearings, under a bill that Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday that he had signed.

The Democratic governor said the measure helps fulfill a promise he made to end private prison use, which he said contributes to over-incarceration and does “not reflect our values.”

The state’s prison system was already phasing them out, despite having to comply with an inmate population cap imposed by federal judges.

Immigrant advocates have praised the bill authored by Democratic Assemblyman Rob Bonta, which they said would put an end to almost all immigration detention in California in the next year.

Based on what I’ve read this morning, he is in some form of rehab to deal with an addiction to clonazepam, which he was prescribed after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

I wish Peterson the best, and sincerely hope that this experience will cause him to revisit some of his earlier work on how to deal with addiction, which was glib and judgmental.

Well said. Let us hope Mr. (closet fascist apologist) Jordan Peterson gets off his high "pecking order top position justifies WHATEVAH BECAUSE YOU CAN" horse.

So what happens now? It's a bit complicated but the end result of Turkey's (rather desperate, by the way) bellicose action is that the Kurds will actually gain more terrain, popularity and strength while Turkey's Trump clone legitimacy will be simultaneously severely eroded. Erdogan might even be replaced, but while that may happen within a year, I don't think it will happen during this latest Turkish attempt to engage in the genocide of the Kurds.

What happens within turkey (Kurdistan?) remain s to be seen. But what the Syria/turkey announcement did is push this story off the front pages, and the corporate press eagerly complied. Except for Doc Maddow.

Palmer Report » Analysis

On Sunday night, the AP broke arguably the most important story in Donald Trump’s whistleblower scandal to date, when it reported that Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and Rick Perry were abusing their government positions to extort a Ukraine gas company into funneling money into the pockets of their allies. It was poised to dominate Monday’s news cycle and change the course of the impeachment narrative, until… well, Trump did something even worse.

After Donald Trump announced that he was immediately and disastrously pulling all U.S. troops out of northern Syria, Palmer Report said this: “This Syria-Turkey stunt is to distract from last night’s AP bombshell that he and Rudy were trying to extort money out of a Ukrainian gas company. And it’s working – no one is covering this crucial story.”

Sure enough, during the course of the day on Monday, the media (somewhat understandably) allowed the Ukraine gas company story to all but completely get lost in the shuffle. If Trump really did announce this stunt late last night in order to make sure the Ukraine bombshell got flushed out of the news cycle, it sure worked well.

But then came Rachel Maddow. During her Monday evening show, she made a point of covering the Ukraine gas company story. She made it important, and she spelled out how Donald Trump is trying to redefine the word “corruption” so that it loses its meaning, even as he falsely accuses his adversaries of doing precisely what he and his camp are doing. Maddow nailed it. Hopefully, as the dust settles on Tuesday, the rest of the media will decide to make the Ukraine gas scandal important.

We'll see. Anything that has to do with hydrocarbon industry corruption fun and games is generally off limits to the U.S. media. The fossil fuel Government has some unwritten media coverage "rules" that must be obeyed...

This Ukraine bit of 🦖Trump  and 🦕Rudy  Hydrocarbon Hellspawn corruption provides further evidence that Hydrocarbon LOVE is at the root of at least 90% of the ROT in the U.S. government. They just cannot let go of those biosphere destroying ☠️ "high energy density" Hydrocarbons

That Syria move by Trumpy is not going to go as Trumpy and his Wrecking Crew hope (i.e. distract from the Impeachment while strengthening Trump's election chances). Sure, the  Fox News Spin Machine will try to celebrate "our troops coming home".

That is, of course, a lie. The troops are emphatically NOT coming home, but most people won't even think of questioning that lie. Those U.S. troops, positioned in the Middle East for future war crimes against Iran, will just stay out of the way while Turkey tries to wipe out the Kurds. Again, nobody in the press will even bring up the issue of real world Pentagon military logistics planning.

The "Trump loves peace" trope is useful to the Trolls polluting Truthdig and other progressive news outlets, who will endlessly argue about how Trump is "against war". It's all BULLSHIT, but that's the way Trumpy, his Wrecking Crew and his enablers operate.

Remember when Palloy was hysterically screaming about "WWIII" back when Russia was preventing the U.S. (see: CIA bought and paid for ISIS "terrorists") from overthowing the Syria Government? I said it was all bullshit and Russia was going to be successful in preventing the USA (AND ISRAEL, of course) from taking down Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad.

Obama's CIA funded ISIS murderers got their asses handed to them, as I humbly 😉 predicted.

The reason Turkey will fail is that the Kurds in Iraq, though 🙊 U.S. media will never utter a peep about them, because this Turkish (and U. S. betrayal) action is correctly perceived by all Kurds as an existential threat, are now united with the Syrian and Turkish Kurds. The Kurds will ALL physically fight Turkey's troops.

The result of this unified Kurdish campaign (with Russia helping them through high tech troop movement surveillance, hand fired missiles and other weapons hardware) will be MORE territory governed by the Kurds in Syria AND Iraq.

Yes, the Kurds want their part of Turkey back too, but that is a bridge too far at this time.

So, though they won't officially have a country called Kurdistan, which is their ultimate goal, for all practical purposes, they will have one 👍. Russia is doing exactly the same thing the U.S. did during the Cold War. That is, they fund and arm a group with a claim to territory that was taken from them in order to prevent, in the is case, expansion of U.S. influence while simultaneously increasing Russian influence. The difference in technique is that the U.S., in Russia's place, would probably want Kurdistan to be called "South Turkey", right after we dreamed up "North Turkey" (see: Korea and Viet Nam).

The Kurds have had a legal, totally justified, gripe against Iraq and Turkish boundaries ever since the Imperialist Powers carved up the Middle East after WWI.

The Kurds KNOW that Russia isn't exactly their friend. Russia, however, will support the Kurds if they agree to be a vassal state. The U.S. (and ISRAEL) will never promote the creation of Kurdistan. Israel has only one goal when it comes to their territorial boundaries: MORE from Syria, Jordan AND Iraq. The Kurds know the score. It's realpolitic ALL THE WAY.

Here in Trumpland, the neocons (all 100% loyal to the United States of Israel) will go berserk when Turkish troops are defeated by the Kurds. Many of these neocons, like Colin Powell (see: "Get a Grip" message to fellow Republicans on their refusal to admit Trump is engaged in Impeachable High Crimes and Misdemeanors), are Republicans, as you know...

I am torn between putting up my "eating popcorn" graphic or that other one. I must admit all these Trumpian actions, faithfully following his 👹 mentor Roy Cohn's 🦍 bellicosity Mens rea Modus operandi, work quite well when you are dealing with a totally corrupted U.S. Judiciary.

Unfortunately for him, thank God, that method is doomed to total failure when applied to geopolitics.

I think the appropriate graphic here is the other one.

Today I posted my answer to the infamous Powell Memo, the crony capitalist road map to U.S. Government by Fascist Oligarchs. I posted it at Daily Kos. I doubt it will get any traction, but I put it out there anyway. I am the eternally hopeful optimist.

Oct 04, 2019 at 02:58:24 PM

Our republic is Fascist TOAST if we do not rid American politics of the influence of oligarch money.

You can call the following 📢 BRING REAL DEMOCRACY TO AMERICA marching orders memo for the Democratic Party the “Pelosi Memo” if she adopts it. Until she does, I’m labelling it the “Gelbert  Memo”. 🧐

🦅 GELBERT MEMO:

1. IMPEACH TRUMP (and Barr, Pompeo, etc.) NOW. Expose the corrupt bastards in the Senate that support Trump Fascism by forcing them to vote to “acquit” 🦀 Trump and his criminal cronies.

2. After we get control of the Senate and the White House, PACK THE SUPREME COURT. Go scorched earth on the right wing crooks there with Congressional Investigations, impeachment inquiries and lawsuits. Drive them into a corner and expose all their corruption and crimes. Tighten up all the campaign finance laws and eliminate corporate personhood. Make bribery illegal again! Get money out of politics PERMANENTLY. Eliminate “limited liability” from corporate law and charters. Severely limit bankruptcy protection for corporations and return personal bankruptcy protection to where it was before the banksters bribed Congress to shaft Americans that fall on hard economic times while greedy corporations stiff creditors with impunity.

3. Imprison everyone previously impeached. Arrest, Try and Convict Giuliani and the rest of Trump’s wrecking crew for crimes committed on orders from Trump.

4. Launch investigations into Fox News, Right Wing Hate Radio, Right wing funded “think” tanks and the Internet Troll farms pushing hate and fascism.

5. MASSIVELY strengthen Social Security and make Medicare for all and free University Eduction the LAW OF THE LAND.

Do all the above and the Democratic Party will dominate elections for DECADES! ✨

If Pelosi does not have the intestinal fortitude to methodically do the above, GET SOMEONE WHO DOES!

OR, let FASCISM DESTROY this country.

A Trump hotel mystery: Giant reservations followed by empty rooms
Source: Politico

House investigators are looking into an allegation that groups — including at least one foreign government — tried to ingratiate themselves to President Donald Trump by booking rooms at his hotels but never staying in them.

It’s a previously unreported part of a broader examination by the House Oversight Committee, included in the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry, into whether Trump broke the law by accepting money from U.S. or foreign governments at his properties.
