California to end its use of 😈 private, 💵🎩 for-profit prisons
Source: Associated Press

by: DON THOMPSON and AMY TAXIN, Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will ban the use of for-profit, private detention facilities, including those under contract to the federal government to hold immigrants awaiting deportation hearings, under a bill that Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday that he had signed.

The Democratic governor said the measure helps fulfill a promise he made to end private prison use, which he said contributes to over-incarceration and does “not reflect our values.”

The state’s prison system was already phasing them out, despite having to comply with an inmate population cap imposed by federal judges.

Immigrant advocates have praised the bill authored by Democratic Assemblyman Rob Bonta, which they said would put an end to almost all immigration detention in California in the next year.

Based on what I’ve read this morning, he is in some form of rehab to deal with an addiction to clonazepam, which he was prescribed after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

I wish Peterson the best, and sincerely hope that this experience will cause him to revisit some of his earlier work on how to deal with addiction, which was glib and judgmental.

Well said. Let us hope Mr. (closet fascist apologist) Jordan Peterson gets off his high "pecking order top position justifies WHATEVAH BECAUSE YOU CAN" horse.

So what happens now? It's a bit complicated but the end result of Turkey's (rather desperate, by the way) bellicose action is that the Kurds will actually gain more terrain, popularity and strength while Turkey's Trump clone legitimacy will be simultaneously severely eroded. Erdogan might even be replaced, but while that may happen within a year, I don't think it will happen during this latest Turkish attempt to engage in the genocide of the Kurds.

Palmer Report » Analysis

On Sunday night, the AP broke arguably the most important story in Donald Trump’s whistleblower scandal to date, when it reported that Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and Rick Perry were abusing their government positions to extort a Ukraine gas company into funneling money into the pockets of their allies. It was poised to dominate Monday’s news cycle and change the course of the impeachment narrative, until… well, Trump did something even worse.

After Donald Trump announced that he was immediately and disastrously pulling all U.S. troops out of northern Syria, Palmer Report said this: “This Syria-Turkey stunt is to distract from last night’s AP bombshell that he and Rudy were trying to extort money out of a Ukrainian gas company. And it’s working – no one is covering this crucial story.”

Sure enough, during the course of the day on Monday, the media (somewhat understandably) allowed the Ukraine gas company story to all but completely get lost in the shuffle. If Trump really did announce this stunt late last night in order to make sure the Ukraine bombshell got flushed out of the news cycle, it sure worked well.

But then came Rachel Maddow. During her Monday evening show, she made a point of covering the Ukraine gas company story. She made it important, and she spelled out how Donald Trump is trying to redefine the word “corruption” so that it loses its meaning, even as he falsely accuses his adversaries of doing precisely what he and his camp are doing. Maddow nailed it. Hopefully, as the dust settles on Tuesday, the rest of the media will decide to make the Ukraine gas scandal important.

We'll see. Anything that has to do with hydrocarbon industry corruption fun and games is generally off limits to the U.S. media. The fossil fuel Government has some unwritten media coverage "rules" that must be obeyed...

This Ukraine bit of 🦖Trump  and 🦕Rudy  Hydrocarbon Hellspawn corruption provides further evidence that Hydrocarbon LOVE is at the root of at least 90% of the ROT in the U.S. government. They just cannot let go of those biosphere destroying ☠️ "high energy density" Hydrocarbons

That Syria move by Trumpy is not going to go as Trumpy and his Wrecking Crew hope (i.e. distract from the Impeachment while strengthening Trump's election chances). Sure, the  Fox News Spin Machine will try to celebrate "our troops coming home".

That is, of course, a lie. The troops are emphatically NOT coming home, but most people won't even think of questioning that lie. Those U.S. troops, positioned in the Middle East for future war crimes against Iran, will just stay out of the way while Turkey tries to wipe out the Kurds. Again, nobody in the press will even bring up the issue of real world Pentagon military logistics planning.

The "Trump loves peace" trope is useful to the Trolls polluting Truthdig and other progressive news outlets, who will endlessly argue about how Trump is "against war". It's all BULLSHIT, but that's the way Trumpy, his Wrecking Crew and his enablers operate.

Remember when Palloy was hysterically screaming about "WWIII" back when Russia was preventing the U.S. (see: CIA bought and paid for ISIS "terrorists") from overthowing the Syria Government? I said it was all bullshit and Russia was going to be successful in preventing the USA (AND ISRAEL, of course) from taking down Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad.

Obama's CIA funded ISIS murderers got their asses handed to them, as I humbly 😉 predicted.

The reason Turkey will fail is that the Kurds in Iraq, though 🙊 U.S. media will never utter a peep about them, because this Turkish (and U. S. betrayal) action is correctly perceived by all Kurds as an existential threat, are now united with the Syrian and Turkish Kurds. The Kurds will ALL physically fight Turkey's troops.

The result of this unified Kurdish campaign (with Russia helping them through high tech troop movement surveillance, hand fired missiles and other weapons hardware) will be MORE territory governed by the Kurds in Syria AND Iraq.

Yes, the Kurds want their part of Turkey back too, but that is a bridge too far at this time.

So, though they won't officially have a country called Kurdistan, which is their ultimate goal, for all practical purposes, they will have one 👍. Russia is doing exactly the same thing the U.S. did during the Cold War. That is, they fund and arm a group with a claim to territory that was taken from them in order to prevent, in the is case, expansion of U.S. influence while simultaneously increasing Russian influence. The difference in technique is that the U.S., in Russia's place, would probably want Kurdistan to be called "South Turkey", right after we dreamed up "North Turkey" (see: Korea and Viet Nam).

The Kurds have had a legal, totally justified, gripe against Iraq and Turkish boundaries ever since the Imperialist Powers carved up the Middle East after WWI.

The Kurds KNOW that Russia isn't exactly their friend. Russia, however, will support the Kurds if they agree to be a vassal state. The U.S. (and ISRAEL) will never promote the creation of Kurdistan. Israel has only one goal when it comes to their territorial boundaries: MORE from Syria, Jordan AND Iraq. The Kurds know the score. It's realpolitic ALL THE WAY.

Here in Trumpland, the neocons (all 100% loyal to the United States of Israel) will go berserk when Turkish troops are defeated by the Kurds. Many of these neocons, like Colin Powell (see: "Get a Grip" message to fellow Republicans on their refusal to admit Trump is engaged in Impeachable High Crimes and Misdemeanors), are Republicans, as you know...

I am torn between putting up my "eating popcorn" graphic or that other one. I must admit all these Trumpian actions, faithfully following his 👹 mentor Roy Cohn's 🦍 bellicosity Mens rea Modus operandi, work quite well when you are dealing with a totally corrupted U.S. Judiciary.

Unfortunately for him, thank God, that method is doomed to total failure when applied to geopolitics.

I think the appropriate graphic here is the other one.

Today I posted my answer to the infamous Powell Memo, the crony capitalist road map to U.S. Government by Fascist Oligarchs. I posted it at Daily Kos. I doubt it will get any traction, but I put it out there anyway. I am the eternally hopeful optimist.

Oct 04, 2019 at 02:58:24 PM

Our republic is Fascist TOAST if we do not rid American politics of the influence of oligarch money.

You can call the following 📢 BRING REAL DEMOCRACY TO AMERICA marching orders memo for the Democratic Party the “Pelosi Memo” if she adopts it. Until she does, I’m labelling it the “Gelbert  Memo”. 🧐

🦅 GELBERT MEMO:

1. IMPEACH TRUMP (and Barr, Pompeo, etc.) NOW. Expose the corrupt bastards in the Senate that support Trump Fascism by forcing them to vote to “acquit” 🦀 Trump and his criminal cronies.

2. After we get control of the Senate and the White House, PACK THE SUPREME COURT. Go scorched earth on the right wing crooks there with Congressional Investigations, impeachment inquiries and lawsuits. Drive them into a corner and expose all their corruption and crimes. Tighten up all the campaign finance laws and eliminate corporate personhood. Make bribery illegal again! Get money out of politics PERMANENTLY. Eliminate “limited liability” from corporate law and charters. Severely limit bankruptcy protection for corporations and return personal bankruptcy protection to where it was before the banksters bribed Congress to shaft Americans that fall on hard economic times while greedy corporations stiff creditors with impunity.

3. Imprison everyone previously impeached. Arrest, Try and Convict Giuliani and the rest of Trump’s wrecking crew for crimes committed on orders from Trump.

4. Launch investigations into Fox News, Right Wing Hate Radio, Right wing funded “think” tanks and the Internet Troll farms pushing hate and fascism.

5. MASSIVELY strengthen Social Security and make Medicare for all and free University Eduction the LAW OF THE LAND.

Do all the above and the Democratic Party will dominate elections for DECADES! ✨

If Pelosi does not have the intestinal fortitude to methodically do the above, GET SOMEONE WHO DOES!

OR, let FASCISM DESTROY this country.

House investigators are looking into an allegation that groups — including at least one foreign government — tried to ingratiate themselves to President Donald Trump by booking rooms at his hotels but never staying in them.

It’s a previously unreported part of a broader examination by the House Oversight Committee, included in the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry, into whether Trump broke the law by accepting money from U.S. or foreign governments at his properties.

“Now we’re looking at near raw bribery,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), a House Oversight Committee member who chairs the subcommittee with jurisdiction over Trump’s hotel in Washington. “That was the risk from day one — foreign governments and others trying to seek favor because we know Trump 💵 pays attention to this.... It’s an obvious attempt to curry favor with him.”

The investigation began after the committee received information that two entities — a trade association and a foreign government — booked a large quantity of rooms but only used a fraction of them, according to a person familiar with the allegation who isn't authorized to speak for the committee.

Donald 🦀 Trump is now talking about having people shot  >:(

Bill Palmer | 10:15 pm EDT October 1, 2019
Palmer Report » Analysis

A few weeks ago Palmer Report joked that, after Rudy Giuliani had screwed up for the umpteenth time, Donald Trump was going to delusionally order his underlings to feed Rudy to the alligators. We were kidding, of course. But now we’re learning that Trump really has been telling his advisers that he wants to feed people to alligators, and he’s apparently dead serious.

In a lengthy new expose from the New York Times that’s somehow not from The Onion, it turns out Donald Trump is telling his advisers that he wants U.S. law enforcement to shoot would-be immigrants in the leg.  He also keeps pushing the idea of building a border trench full of 🐍 snakes and 🐊 alligators. As proof that he’s not merely joking, he made his advisers go as far as studying what this alligator trench would cost.

Again, this is coming from the New York Times, so it’s real. More to the point, the only possible sources for this expose are Donald Trump’s own advisers, which means they’re so concerned about his deteriorating mindset, they’re sounding the alarm by running to the nation’s most respected newspaper and revealing Trump’s most deranged plans.

Again, last month we joked about Donald Trump telling his advisers to start feeding people to the alligators, because we thought it was such an absurdly over the top idea – even by Trump standards – it would be seen as pure sarcasm. Now it turns out Trump really is doing precisely that behind the scenes. It’s time for the 25th Amendment.

True. In addition, there is an even greater threat to Florida in general, and Miami in particular, that should concern anybody that lives there. There is a superfund site very close to the Biscayne Aquifer, the main source of fresh water for Miami. Superfund sites all over the USA were designated as such decades ago by the EPA, when a national effort was undertaken to clean up all the poisonous chemicals in certain industrial areas going back to the early 1940's (and  some before that!).

Not widely known by the American public (of course - we can't have Capitalism's Industrial Poisonous ☠️ Pollution waste by-product "Externalities" making Capitalism look like the biosphere destroying cancer that it is, now can we? 😈) is the FACT that some of those superfund sites are so chemically toxic that they have been designated as PERMANENT superfund sites. IOW, our good gooberment does not have the ability to de-toxify them.

As the sea level rises, and long before it actually is a threat to even the coastal land areas, salt water encroachment through the coral base of Florida will reach that superfund site near Miami.

    //

Tap water will be poisonous. Never mind what all those leached toxic chemicals, that DO NOT DEGRADE and CANNOT BE FILTERED OR CHEMICALLY SEPARATED OUT through present water purifying technology, will DO ☠️ to all the flora and fauna in the Everglades, absolutely everyone that does not own a water generator which extracts H2O out of the air will have to move or die.

And how long will the rich bastards with their water generators hold out while the flora and fauna dies all around them? Not long, I'll wager.

Brilliant deep dive on this topic, of which I was completely unaware. Sea level rise will make toxic seeps of these sites and corpses of the residents.

I am more cynical about the endgame: we'll blame the poor, and the dead.

    Thanks bro. :)

I admit your endgame analysis may be more reality based than mine. After all, there is the massive post-Nixon spin machine that was spelled out in an article you posted yesterday. That spin machine has been as hostile to climate change reality as it has been to irrefutable historical 🐘 right wing serial corruption and coverup of crimes reality.

    Quote
The right has devoted decades of careful, patient investment to creating this system, which has three main arms.

First, there’s a gigantic media ecosystem, with Fox News at the apex and innumerable smaller creatures. Second, there’s an intelligentsia based in think tanks and Ivy League professorships funded by conservative foundations. Third, there’s a legion of right-wing judges carefully selected for monomaniacal partisan loyalty.

BUT, the article, though stating many truths, does not acknowledge a more basic truth that goes to heart of the rot destroying this country's hope for a better future. That is, TPTB have TOTALLY embraced an Orwellian inversion of Ethical Standards (see: Darwinian based "triumph of the best liar and crook" game theory INSANITY). I'll get to that in a moment, but the entire Watergate Republican pious 😇 weeping and gnashing of teeth noise was, itself, a 😈 cover up of Nixon's treasonous greater crimes. The article fails to point out that the purpose of the Republican public pity party for Nixon was, in itself, a disingenuous (see: game theory) ploy to KEEP the public focused EXCLUSIVELY on Watergate. It worked. >:(

Most people do not give any importance to that Nixon quote on the tapes:"other stuff we do not want to get out there". The "OTHER" business was Nixon's link, through Howard Hughs, and Howard Hughs' lawyer, to the Cuba sabotage and Castro hit team members that NIXON, as a VP under Eisenhower (who fully approved), ordered to be created and funded. That "Plumbers" team was the very same team that participated in the Watergate burglary AND, in 1963, the assassination of JFK. "Other" stuff, indeed.

Pelosi, a card carrying member of the pseudo-left fascists, is doing exactly the same thing now by trying to keep the impeachment "narrowly focused" on the Ukraine shakedown. That will probably work, though not if Maxine Waters has anything to say about it. I hope she has good security.

TPTB will, after cleverly firing up the Republican Base with so much outrage at Trump's "crucifixion by the libruls" that they will vote for ANY Republican Candidtate for ANY political office, quietly, but firmly. ask Mr. Trump to spend more time with his family, or something similar. Trump will then be the new Nixonian "martyr". 😉😈

I predict that evil trick will NOT work this time around.

Though the game theory adverts fervently wish otherwise (most people at Fox News and the CIA are true believers in this psycho-babble mindfork), no amount of right wing coordinated spin machine brainwashing can achieve that "1984" BALONEY of convincing most people, NOT so much that 'up is down' and 'down is up', but that WHATEVER YOU SAY IS THE "TRUTH", even if it is exactly the opposite of what you said yesterday, especially when said spin machine pushes the bold faced LIE that any and all historical examples of political corruption in the USA, even though far less significant than Trump's in-our-faces self enrichment corruption, "do not apply" to Trump. The "everybody does it" BULLSHIT is NOT going to fly either.

These fascists who think you can warp people's brains so badly that you can consistently fool them are only right to a point. That point was reached with Nixon. The same point has now been reached with Trump. TPTB want to save their monstrous planet eating cancer at all costs. Trump is, like Nixon was, a darling, but expendable to save the BIG ORWELL cognitive dissonance machine. As with Nixon, the corrupt system will be preserved. Trump is a 🐒 dispensable tool of the system, even if he deludes himself into thinking he runs it.

I'm not a psychologist, but I know my stuff here. The right wing spin machine has a fatal weakness. That weakness is that, while you CAN, using Hitler's MO, fire up people to engage in violence against the "other", you have to be VERY careful to NOT trigger cognitive dissonance. WHY? Because the human brain goes TILT when incapacitated by cognitive dissonance.

Cognitive dissonance is the most effective totally unethical psychological tool there is to produce paralysis and INaction. IOW, if you keep piously and loudly repeating, over and over, for years and years, about the "justice" of impeaching and/or arresting the Clintons and Obama, only to claim NOW that Trump, who has done the same and much, much worse, is the victim of "INjustice", you are in danger of generating cognitive dissonance among Trump supporters.

Yes, I know the fascists think they have all that figured out and can get around that pesky "old school" psychological stuff.
BULLSHIT. Fascists are known for their overreach zeal, so I expect them to generate so much UNPLANNED cognitive dissonance in Trump supporters, that despite those chumps continuing to ideologically support Trump, a significant percentage of them will be too demoralized (it will actually be cognitive dissonance, but they will perceive it as lack of energy, depression or despair) to vote in the 2020 elections.

As an aside, cognitive dissonance among Democratic Party supporters has been the right wing spin machine goal since Nixon. Though that certainly was instrumental to Trump's 2016 "win", it has NOT worked as effectively as they hoped (SEE: 2018 elections). That is why the fascists are always trying to disenfranchise anyone that does not support Republican candidates.

I am certain that the modern day true believer liars populating the right wing spin machine have embraced Nietzsche's Orwellian inversion of lying, which makes the (SEE: Darwinian BULLSHIT) pretzel logic argument that liars are "mentally stronger".
    Quote
Friedrich Nietzsche suggested that those who refrain from lying may do so only because of the difficulty involved in maintaining the lie. This is consistent with his general 🦍 philosophy that divides (or ranks) people according to strength and ability; thus, some people tell the truth only out of weakness.
    Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie

You can see how these cowardly evil bastards who love to lie, like Hitler then, and the right wing spin machine tools now, happily eat up any self serving horseshit about being "superior humans" because they are such "good" liars. Darwin helped way to many ethics rejecting crooks and liars justify happy horseshit, not just to calm their mostly calloused conscience, but to CELEBRATE MIGHT OVER RIGHT, the more cruel and/or mendacious, the BETTER! If you are the "fittest", you can do whatever you want! Never mind all that yammering about ethics, rule of law and respect for your neighbor and the rest of creation. That's for the WEAK.

Which brings me back to the Climate Change and the three armed profit over people and planet monster.

    Quote
The right has devoted decades of careful, patient investment to creating this system, which has three main arms

The spin machine is inexorably committing the same mistake with Climate Change Propaganda as it is in regard to Trump's Crimes. Consequently Cognitive Dissonance among the deniers is slowly, but surely, taking hold.

While your view that we will blame the poor and the dead accurately reflects exactly where the spin machine will attempt to place the blame, when a city like Miami is lost, the reality of a planet full of humans that overwhelmingly GET IT about who is really responsible for this Catastrophic Climate Change will expose the 🐍 spin machine as the handmadien of the 🦕🦖 Hydrocarbon Hellspawn.

The true believing deniers will be mostly INactivated due to Cognitive Dissonace (SEE: Coal, Oil, Gas, CO2 = "good" but Solar Panels, Cheap Wind Electricity, etc. = "bad" ), while the masses who just want to LIVE will be more energized to take ACTION against the polluters than ever.

The spin machine is a basically a LIE machine. We know who the Father of lies is. But even if you don't believe that Satan is a real entity, it is just plain impractical, often dangerous and occasionally even suicidally stupid, to live your life believing LIES from the spin machine created for the express purpose of covering up the despicable crimes of the Profit Over People and Planet evil elite.

    Quote
Once a lie has been told, there can be two alternative consequences: it may be discovered or remain undiscovered. Under some circumstances, discovery of a lie may discredit other statements by the same speaker and can lead to social or legal sanctions against the speaker, such as ostracizing or conviction for perjury.[30] When a lie is discovered, the state of mind and behavior of the liar is no longer predictable.

Hannah Arendt spoke about extraordinary cases in which an entire society is being lied to consistently. She said that the consequences of such lying are "not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer. This is because lies, by their very nature, have to be changed, and a lying government has constantly to rewrite its own history. On the receiving end you get not only one lie—a lie which you could go on for the rest of your days—but you get a great number of lies, depending on how the political wind blows."
    Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie

Hannah Arendt saying that "nobody believes anything any longer" is refering, not to all sources of information, but SPECIFICALLY to the Government doing the consistent lying and modification of lies (In our case, it's the Fascist Government/Corporate 🐍 Media Spin Machine). THAT DECISION on the part of those consistently lied to is a product of Cognitive Dissonance. It's the consequence of the spin machine's embrace of the FLAWED LOGIC (see: Orwellian mindfork) that, as long as the source of the lie is offically celebrated as the source of "TRUTH", you can lie 24/7 to the chumps.
