A 🦕🦖 Big Oil Bailout Would Be the Opposite of the Green New Deal We Need

ALEXIS GOLDSTEIN, TRUTHOUT

Policy makers should let oil producers fail, and devote resources to stave off the climate crisis before it gets worse.

Is 🦕🦖 Big Oil finally getting stranded?

Thanks to Russia and Saudi Arabia, global oil production has not decreased in reaction to the abrupt halt in our economies. That means all the pipelines, all the oil tankers, all the refineries and all the storage facilities are full to capacity with a commodity that nobody can use right now. Oil producers large and small are haemorrhaging money in a way that is genuinely threatening to their existence, and people are learning how to work from home in a way that may mean we choose to travel far less when the pandemic finally ends. So is this a 'Perfect Storm' that spells the end for BIG OIL?

"After decades of financing climate destruction, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citigroup got what they paid for: defaulting loans, declining assets, and a dangerously warming climate." said Tamara Toles O'Laughlin, 350.org's North America Director. "Now, in a desperate attempt to recoup what costs they can, these banks are taking ownership over oil and gas companies -- clarifying what many in the climate movement have known all along: our financial institutions are in bed with fossil fuels for short-term gains and long-term destruction. Sadly, it will be the workers, our communities, and those on the frontlines of dangerous fossil fuel projects who will bear the true cost of the damage."

Quote
Along with the terrible climate and public health impacts of funding these oil and gas companies to continue to pollute, allowing financial institutions to directly own fossil fuel assets is an open invitation to corruption. In 2013, JPMorgan Chase paid a $410 million fine for manipulating electricity markets in the Midwest. The same year, Goldman Sachs was caught fixing aluminum prices by hoarding it in warehouses owned by the bank. Allowing banks to own companies in an industry already known for its corruption, disregard for public safety, and flagrant violation of environmental laws is a recipe for disaster.

Quote
"This is like a bookie purchasing the track, only the track is a dying industry killing our chance at a future. Clearly these banks' climate commitments aren't worth the 'recycled' paper they were written on," said Tara Houska (Couchiching First Nation), founder of Giniw Collective. "It's our money in their vaults — hitting 'withdrawal' is long overdue."

There is little reason to believe that the four banks mentioned in the article have any intention of mitigating the climate impact of their actions. JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi, and Bank of America are, in that order, the four largest global bankers of fossil fuels, as detailed in the recently released "Banking on Climate Change: Fossil Fuel Finance Report 2020."

"JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Citi are the top four fracking banks in the world, and the top four fossil fuel banks in the world >:(. This development exposes the central role of banks in fossil fuels and clearly illustrates the riskiness of fossil finance," said Jason Opeña Disterhoft, senior campaigner with Rainforest Action Network. "As the COVID recovery goes forward, a common-sense guardrail should be: banks can't take public money without committing to zero out their fossil financing. No bailout without fossil phaseout."

Stop the Money Pipeline: Private banks owning 🦕🦖 oil companies is a recipe for disaster

Stop the Money Pipeline, April 10, 2020
The news that major U.S. banks like JPMorgan Chase are preparing to ask regulators to allow them to take direct ownership of oil and gas companies should ring major alarm bells on Capitol Hill and across the nation, according to organizations with the Stop the Money Pipeline coalition.

😈 Marc Morano and 😈 Joe Bastardi Stoke Anger At, and Fear Of, Liberals in order to Sell a book of Climate Denial and Distract from 🦖 Fossil Fuel Industry Guilt

"As the meat myths we saw recently can attest, deniers are all too happy to spin a study saying “here’s red meat’s climate impact” into a completely unfounded “liberals are coming for your burger!” And since they’re desperate to make climate change about anything other than the fossil fuel industry’s responsibility for the problem, no lie is too shameless, and they’re back at it this week. This time they’ve chosen a target even more near and dear to the average American heart: our pets." -- Nexus Hot News Denier Roundup May 7, 2021

"We definitely don’t have another decade to waste on people for whom the term “sellout” would be a compliment. Just like calling Nickelback sellouts would falsely imply they were ever not bland, mass-marketed, lowest-common-denominator poprock, calling professional deniers like Koonin, Lomborg, Shellenberger et al. "sellouts" would just validate their lies about having ever been a remotely decent human being in the first place and not just a greedy, lying, polluter mouthpiece with a contrarian streak and knack for self-promotion." -- Nexus Hot News Denier Roundup May 6, 2021

The 'Big Con' Revealed: Report Details 🦖 Fossil Fuel Industry's 😈 Deceptive 'Net Zero' Strategy

Common Dreams Jun. 09, 2021 12:52PM

SNIPPETS:

By Brett Wilkins

A new report published Wednesday by a trio of progressive advocacy groups lifts the veil on so-called "net zero" climate pledges, which are often touted by corporations and governments as solutions to the climate emergency, but which the paper's authors argue are merely a dangerous form of greenwashing that should be eschewed in favor of Real Zero policies based on meaningful, near-term commitments to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

... ... instead of offering meaningful real solutions to justly address the crisis 🦕🦖 they 🐍 knowingly created and owning up to their responsibility to act beginning with drastically reducing emissions at source, polluting corporations and governments are advancing 'net zero' plans that require little or nothing in the way of real solutions or real effective emissions cuts."

The report, The Big Con: How 😈 Big Polluters Are Advancing a "Net Zero" Climate Agenda to Delay, Deceive, and Deny, was published by Corporate Accountability, the Global Forest Coalition, and Friends of the Earth International, and is endorsed by more than 60 environmental organizations. ... ...

"Big polluters and rich governments should not only reduce emissions to Real Zero, they must pay reparations for the huge climate debt owed to the Global South," added Nacpil.

New Big 🦖 Oil Plan To Disclose () Emission Reductions Simply Ignores 90% Of Their Pollution

Much like the Republican Party’s greenwashing, the oil industry is responding to public pressure on climate change with empty gestures meant to make it sound like they’re taking the problem seriously, without actually doing anything serious.

This spring, the American Petroleum Institute updated its public stance on climate, claiming it was open to a possible carbon price. But of course, there was a catch: They wanted consumers to pay the price for pollution, not the polluters. They get to look like they’re taking a big new step away from extremist climate denial, while actually remaining firm in their refusal to stop polluting or accept any responsibility for the damage their products cause.

Last week, API took another industrial-sized-ass-covering step, announcing a new template for oil and gas companies to use to provide “transparency” (their term) about greenhouse gas emissions, and the progress being made to reduce those pollutants. Aaron Padilla of API told reporters that the template “gives a foundational picture of a company’s work to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.”

It’s clearly meant to be a way for companies to highlight the token efforts they’re making to address climate change to ward off further government regulation. They can point to these disclosures to claim the industry is already tackling the problem. But what it really shows is that the industry is still in steadfast denial about its culpability for the climate crisis.

The template itself, provided as a one-page spreadsheet, is actually pretty simple. The first section is for their Scope 1 emissions, things like methane leaks and flaring from the drilling process. The second is their Scope 2 emissions, covering heating and cooling facilities and other indirect pollution that they generate in the course of producing fossil fuels.

You may expect Scope 3 emissions to come next, given "Scope 3 emissions are approximately 90% of an upstream oil and gas companies' emissions, and every major investor-led group working on climate change expects such companies to report them,"  Carbon Tracker’s Robert Schuwerk explained to S&P Global.

But they aren’t mentioned in the template, and as Schuwerk said, “leaving that out is a glaring omission.

In an accompanying guidance doc, API addresses Scope 3 emissions only once, in a footnote acknowledging that they’re ignoring Scope 3 emissions (maybe next time!).

Instead, they skip straight onto “GHG mitigation” efforts, like carbon capture or renewable energy credits purchased so companies can get credit for nibbling around the edges of the problem caused primarily by the products they’re selling.

Similarly, sections 4 and 5 give companies spots to give themselves credit for reducing the intensity of their Scope 1 extraction emissions – claiming kudos for producing fewer emissions while producing fossil fuels that, once sold and burned, will completely swamp those reductions – and any other GHG reduction targets they may feel like disclosing. Lastly, section 6 is just a place for them to have a third-party verification.

If you’re wondering, then, just how much of the climate crisis the oil industry can be trusted to address, this gives an answer: 10%, at most.

This 🦕🐍😈🦖 network played a critical role in shifting the Republican Party from a position of support for action to cut emissions in the 1980s to its near-total opposition to tackling climate change from the mid-1990s to today.

🦖Exxon Lobbyist: We Worked With ‘Shadowy Groups’ To ‘Aggressively Fight’ Climate Science and Our Carbon Tax 'Support' 😉 Is A Ruse 😈

Quote
When asked which senators Exxon is lobbying on these specific points,  McCoy said: “Senator 🦕 Shelley Moore Capito [Republican senator for West Virginia]… who’s the ranking member of environment and public works. 🐍 Joe Manchin, I talk to his office every week, he is the kingmaker >:( on this because he’s a Democrat from West Virginia which is [a] very conservative state, so he is, and he’s not shy about sort of staking his claim early and completely changing the debate.”

“On the Democrat side we look for the moderates on these issues”, McCoy continued, highlighting figures including Arizona senator 🐍 Kyrsten Sinema; 🦕 John Tester, senator for Montana; and 🐍 Chris Coons, senator for Delaware, President Biden’s home state.

“Senator Coons… has a very close relationship with Senator [President] Biden, so we’ve been working with his office – as a matter of fact our CEO is talking to him next Tuesday and having those conversations and just teeing it up, and then that way I can start working with his staff to let them know where we 🦖 are on some of these issues,” McCoy said.

He added that he targets senators like Mark Kelly, Democrat senator from Arizona, New Hampshire Democrat senator 🐵 Maggie Hassan, and Florida Republican senator 👿 Marco Rubio, who are up for reelection in 2022. “I can’t worry about the 2027 class because they’re not focused on re-election. The 2022 [class] is focused on re-election so I know I have them… you can have those conversations with them because they’re a captive audience, they know they need 🦖 you 😈 and I need 🙊🙉🙈 them,” McCoy said.

“The recording we’ve heard today only solidifies what we already know: for decades, 🦖 fossil fuel companies have lied to the public, to regulators, and to Congress about the true danger posed by their products,” Rep. Ro Khanna said in a statement.

HOPE IS A CLIMATE SURVIVAL STRATEGY

BY KARYN BIGELOW, AVERY DAVIS LAMB

SNIPPET:

Phrases like “human-caused climate change” and “anthropocene” mask the truth of who is causing climate change: large corporations who profit off of the destruction of God’s creation and the exploitation of God’s people. We do not all bear equal responsibility for the climate crisis. Just 100 🦖👿 companies are responsible for 71 percent of climate pollution. 🦖 Exxon Mobil, one of the largest oil and gas companies, knew as early as 1977 that its business model would result in several degrees of warming. Rather than sharing their research with the public, the company spent the next four decades sowing misinformation about climate science.

We know who is causing climate change, and we know that to stop it, these  100 🦖👿 companies must immediately stop burning fossil fuels. These polluters have built 💰🎩 fortunes off the backs of the poor and ought to be held legally, financially, and morally accountable for their actions. They are like the rich who the prophet Amos scolds, “sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals … trample the poor into the dust of the earth and they push the afflicted out of the way.”

For Amos, and for us, the response to exploitation is justice flowing down like waters.

SIX bailed-out 🦖 polluters already spent $15m this year 😈 lobbying for subsidies and against climate action

SNIPPETS:

Six U.S.-based 🦖 oil and 🦕 gas companies that benefited from last year’s bailouts 😈 spent more than a million dollars apiece in the first half of 2021. They are: Chevron, Occidental, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Phillips 66, and Marathon Petroleum. ... ...

ConocoPhillips spent its lobbying dollars trying to to weaken protections for polar bears in oil drilling areas.

A common theme through the companies’ lobbying disclosures is their opposition to climate change-focused policies such as H.R. 1512 (the CLEAN Future Act), the Paris Climate Accord, and climate risk disclosure requirements.

Talking about money to maintain roads and bridges.
The excise duty on fuel has not risen from the 1990's.
Is there any wonder as to why there is a short fall in funds to maintain roads?????

As to the situation in the Senate in the USA it is as you said a 50-50 balance, however the said senator will vote against any bill that is in anyway progressive.

The money coming from usage of fuel in ICE and soon to be implemented in a normal society for the usage of roads by EV's should go to maintaining roads for both.

The insane situation where the money coming is has not increased for over 50 years is lets be polite not good.

As to the said Senator it is a sad outcome for society that this single man can make or break any bill that comes up for a vote.

Zachary Shahan Community Manager john • 2 days ago
Prime Minister Manchin, who a tiny portion of society elected.

Probably part of the reason why later iterations of democratic systems in Europe didn't copy our system.

Vijay Govindan  Zachary Shahan • 2 days ago
I saw a piece on German leaders. The stability and lack of charismatic leaders is remarkable. If we ever re-do our system, the Senate as an institution has to go. Parliamentary democracy is far stronger than our republic.

freedomev  Vijay Govindan • a day ago
We just need to neuter the parties by removing their power like choosing who will run.
Ranked choice would go a long way to do that.
Nothing wrong with the Senate that independents won't cure and go back to the original filibuster rules limited to how long one could
talk..

Vijay Govindan • a day ago
Just out, Manchin is saying $1.5T over 10 years. A paltry sum.

Nio62 • 2 days ago
These frauds Manchin and Sinema are really Republicans and only care about the money their corporate masters pay them. They are an absolute disgrace and need to be replaced in the next election. Manchin and Sinema’s opposition to eliminating the legislative filibuster, which requires a 60 vote threshold for most legislation, is inexcusable. The only thing we can do is threaten their power, and threaten the seat that they hold and threaten their re-election.

Zachary Shahan Community Manager Nio62 • 2 days ago
They are something like 50% Republicans. Not the extreme seditionists and mafia associates of the GOP, but certainly not true Democrats.

Sinema is an especially odd case, given her background. Confusing one.

Benjamin Nead  Zachary Shahan • 16 hours ago • edited
Kyrsten Sinema is most certainly going to be primaried in 2024. A likely contender who is being considered is Ruben Gallego, currently representing Arizona's 7th District in The US House. If this happens and he's subsequently is elected, he would be the first Latino Senator from our state. Along with our other Democratic Senator, Mark Kelly, he would be fine.

The Arizona Democrats are pissed and the official party apparatus is now threatening to censure Sinema. She's got something like a 60% disapproval rate within that voter block. Factor in the usual 10% of "I don't know enough about her" no-nothings and she might have something like 30% support among Arizona Democrats, which is extraordinarily bad for her re-election prospects.

Unlike John McCain, she doesn't have much support amongst independents. Republicans also don't care for her. They just consider her a wimpy moderate and, if she attempted to switch parties, she would get slaughtered in their primary. Unfortunately - barring extraordinary circumstances - we're stuck with her through at least the end of 2024.

Kurt Rohlfs • 2 days ago
In terms of Manchin in this situation, threaten to enable EPA to go after coal to wipe them out within 5 years if you don't vote with the Democrats.

Broadly...
Kill the filibuster. Reverse Citizens United. Establish an independent committee with the visibility and authority to remove congressional leaders rights to vote on specific decisions and laws they have a conflict of interest in.

Put all government leaders communications to the public under oath, so they can be charged with perjury and removed for repeated offenses.

Change corporate governance law from shareholder primacy to stakeholder governance, including extending the boards fiduciary duties to all stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, consumers, the general public and the planet.

Increase IRS budget 50 fold to go after tax dodgers; IRS would be self funding within a year.

Mark Roest Kurt Rohlfs • 8 hours ago
Kurt, that threat to Manchin is brilliant! To carry it a step farther, have both Biden and the Democrats say it in unison -- and carry out the threat, because he won't back down. Assume the GOP has a 52 to 50 majority on any progressive legislation, as the article says in other words, and tell Biden the nicey-nice is over, it's all-out political war against the right wing, using Executive Power and partnerships with the clean technology industries and all those fighting for people's needs and rights. Be certain to carry the fight to the people every day, rally them the way a union leader rallies the workers during a drawn-out strike! And use Democrat-controlled state budgets to take care of the people being hurt, systematically.

The rest of your ideas are excellent also.

👍 Well said. I would add that a group of pro-environment corporations could easily form a PAC to convince 🦕 Manchin and 🐍 Sinema to change their voting behavior by providing larger contributions than the polluter corporations.

Matt Fulkerson  Agelbert • 10 hours ago
This is actually a very good point. I don't know why corporate money hasn't shown up against fossil fuel companies. Perhaps because most companies are actually greenwashing.

Agelbert Matt Fulkerson • an hour ago
Yes, the greenwashing is an unfortunate consequence of the unethical, but typical, greed based habit, engrained within modern corporate culture, of addressing real problems with perception management pig lipstick, rather than actually attempting to solve the problem.

The "socializing" of pollution costs onto we-the-people is the Social Darwinist ideological poison within modern corporate culture that severely endangers our future as a viable species. Big 🦖 Oil is the poster boy for rapacious greed caused ecocide. 🤦‍♂️

Thanks. I would agree with the PAC approach as well. Manchin is heavily invested in companies that pollute, so the clean PAC could easily offset that influence. A move to a clean economy would be good for West Virginia, but a noisy minority and and some donors are a loud bunch.
I don't know why Sinema is pushing back on this, it's counter to her Green Party/Social Worker roots and in general her donors, there must be something there.

You are welcome, my friend.
As to 🐍 Sinema, I'm pretty sure that she has been a stalking horse for the 😈 "best bidder", so to speak, from the start. She is as bought and paid for as they come. Manchin and Sinema are both birds of the same corruption serving feather.
If Sinema ever pretended to be "green", it was a front. Remember her HERO was none other than war loving Republican 🐘 Senator McCain!

Thank you for the additional context. I had read her Wikipedia page, which is generally trustworthy. Her district deserved better, considering McCain was in that role.

I suspect the problem of corruption in US Government operates on several levels, all designed to convince we-the-people that we "live in a Representative Republic" where we democratically elect Representatives to represent us. As the Yale Study made in the 1990's confirmed, the USA is effectively an oligarchy, NOT a Representative Republic. The study documented the fact that for (at least) the previous decade, all (not most, but ALL!) decisions made by the lawmakers reflected the will of the richest Americans, in direct opposition to the wishes, as learned from frequent polls, of the overwhelming majority of we-the-voters.

Nearly 30 years later, the brazen disregard for the wishes of the electorate is even more pronounced.
So, the Manchin and Sinema thing is really just the tip of a giant thorughly undemocratic turdburg. That is why logical, sound suggestions like yours never see the light of legislation. Of course every politician with a lick of sense knows those reforms would work to make our country more democratic, more equitable and more healthy for the majority of we-the-voters. But that is NOT the constituency of our (s)elected Representatives and Senators. In fact, it never has been.

I am no longer sure that after the Civil War there were two sides to American politics, when the Madisonians got folded, spindled and corporate power mutiliated by the Hamiltonian Robber Barons.

Completely agree on the Oligarchy. History is written by the victors, so you may be spot on in regards to the civil war as well.

Similarly "economics" was also discovered to be more political than science and the fin-politicians leveraging the title of "capitalism", as their tome, even though it's not capitalism at all. Both with economics and capitalism the Oligarchy are controlling it, but not all, there are some trying to fix it. We are priming for a French revolution type event, if the liberals and conservatives understand we are being pitted against each other. This is why the Oligarchy are not calming social media rhetoric, since it's a great distraction.

I totally agree with you. When I ponder these things, it takes me back to high school (1960-64) when we would ask the rhetorical question of what happens when an unstoppable force hits an immovable object. Well the unstoppable force now is Catastrophic Climate Change. The "Immovable object" is represented by the Social Darwinists dominating the rapacious elite greedballs. As I wrote in that post about how the Hamiltonian Robber Barrons did a number on the USA, their very wealthy descendants do not plan to give up nada.

These Oligarchs do not want to lower their carbon footprint to keep climate change from wiping humanity out. So, they figure allowing climate change to wipe out 95% of humanity while they "ride it out" is "worth it". In fact, they see a large reduction in the human population as a huge positive factor because they believe it will help the biosphere recover from damage caused by a large human population.

They are stupid, but that never stopped Social Darwinists from claiming, not merely the "right", but the "obligation" of the "apex predators" among us to run roughshod over every single tenet of civilized biosphere preserving and enhancing behavior on behalf of short term profits.

If we humans do not resolve to make unethical behavior in business totally unacceptable, we are done.

George M. Woodwell, Woods Hole Research Center founder:
Quote
"The core responsibility assigned to governments in democracies is the PUBLIC WELFARE, protecting the HUMAN BIRTHRIGHT to BASIC NEEDS: clean air, water, land, and a place to live, under EQUITABLE RULES of access to all common property resources.

It is astonishing to discover that major political efforts in democracies can be turned to undermining the core purpose of government, destroying the factual basis for fair and effective protection of essential common property resources of all to feed the financial interests of a few.

These 😈🦖 efforts, limiting scientific research on environment, denying the validity of settled facts and natural laws, are a shameful dance, far below acceptable or reputable political behavior. It can be treated not as a reasoned alternative, but scorned for what it is – SIMPLE THIEVERY."
