US GDP contracted by 4.8% in the first quarter. It was the first negative GDP reading since a 1.1% decline in the first quarter of 2014 and it was the lowest level since the 8.4% plunge in Q4 of 2008.
And the worst is yet to come.

These ‘Are The Good Times — Compared To What’s Coming Next
By Chauncey DeVega, Salon. Empires fall a little bit at a time and then all at once. Over the last two decades, America has proven itself to be well along on that journey. The coronavirus pandemic has simply pushed our nation further along that downward spiral. Ultimately, the pandemic has further exposed and exacerbated — for those still somehow in denial about the decades-long reality of America as a decaying empire — deep political, social, economic, cultural and other societal problems. The country’s infrastructure is rotting. Trump presides over a plutocratic, corrupt, cruel, authoritarian, pathological kakistocracy. - more - 😬

#GeneralStrike2020: How To Participate On The May Day Launch
By Popular Resistance. On May Day, the first of May, the #GeneralStrike2020 (and beyond) campaign launches across the country. Learn more about the overall campaign in our most recent newsletter, “The Era of Mass Strikes Begins On May 1; First Day of General Strike Campaign.” This prolonged and broad campaign will organize around a list of basic demands, as outlined here. Not on the list, but included is the demand to save the US Postal Service. The campaign will follow a three-prong strategy – resistance through noncompliance, mutual aid and building alternative systems i ...  - more -

Defying Trump’s Order , Nebraska Meatpackers Strike And More Strike News
By Mike Elk, Pay Day Report. Earlier today, Trump announced that he intended to use the power of the federal government and the Defense Production Act to keep meat processing plants open throughout the United States. The move comes as massive outbreaks with hundreds of workers have hit meatpacking plants throughout the U.S. As a result, scores of meatpacking plants have closed because of outbreaks. Strikes and mass sickouts at a dozen meatpacking plants throughout the U.S. have led to the closure of additional plants. - more -

Amazon, Walmart, FedEx Workers Plan Walkout On Friday
By Kaelan Deese, The Hill.Workers from corporations are planning a walkout Friday, including employees from Amazon, Walmart and FedEx. The workers are seeking better health and safety standards as well as hazard pay while working during the coronavirus pandemic.  Former Amazon employee Christian Smalls, shared a flyer on Twitter last week that included other prominent company names participating in the demonstration on May 1, such as Instacart, Target and Whole Foods, according to a report from The Intercept.  - more -

Could New Jersey Solve The Local News Crisis?
By Joshua Benton, NiemanLab.org. Americans, generally speaking at least, think it is right and good that they and their neighbors have access to books. And magazines and newspapers. And internet access when you need it. And places to sit and read. And a trusted source you can call when you have a question you can’t figure out the answer to. These things cost money, and it’s unlikely the magic of the marketplace will find a way to make all of them universally accessible. So people in nearly every community nationwide have funded and supported these.. - more -

Cars Stuck at Sea Shows Weight of U.S. Auto Industry Glut
By Bloomberg on May 01, 2020 01:14 pm
By Chester Dawson (Bloomberg) — The length of almost two football fields, the cargo ship Jupiter Spirit arrived in Los Angeles’ harbor on April 24 after an almost three-week journey from Japan, ready to unload its cargo of about 2,000 Nissan Armada SUVs, Rogue crossovers and Infiniti sedans in a quick, half-day operation. But when the […]  Read full story...

🦕 Tanker Rates 🌠 Crash as 🦖 OPEC+ Cuts Near. Tanker Owners Reman Bullish
By Bloomberg on May 01, 2020 11:49 am
By Firat Kayakiran (Bloomberg) — Oil tanker rates are crashing as a pact to limit global crude production begins. Don’t bet on the rout enduring. From today, crude producers in the OPEC+ alliance are cutting their collective output by a level that’s unprecedented in history — almost 10% of global consumption. Perhaps her most shocking calculation is that were the current stimulus money to be divvied up and sent directly to families, it would end up being $13,000 per person, not the measly $1,200 the government is sending out as a one-off. Where, you may ask, did all the rest of that money go? As Brown and Scheer continually remind us, it’s been sent to the companies that pull all the strings in our rigged system.

Scheer Intelligence: Coronavirus Proves Capitalism Has Always Been A Lie
By 🗽 Robert Scheer, Scheer Post. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to cause mass death and upheaval around the world, there has been an unexpected side effect: it has unmasked capitalism. In the U.S., this unmasking can be seen in both the Federal Reserve’s actions as well as Congress’ coronavirus aid legislation, the CARES Act, both of which reveal critical truths about an economic system that has been sold to working people as one thing and as quite another to banks and corporations. To shed some much needed light on the intricacies of our...

‘There’s mourning in America. More than 60,000 Americans have died from a deadly virus Donald Trump ignored.’ — This brutal Republican-sponsored ad blames Donald Trump for the U.S.' coronavirus death toll.

In US news and current events today, COVID-19 has touched every part of the U.S., with the number of confirmed coronavirus cases increasing and the amount of COVID19 deaths getting larger. Politics aside, health experts have found that if President Donald Trump acted sooner to address the coronavirus pandemic, the COVID-19 death toll in the U.S. wouldn't be as high as it is.

In this brutal new ad from the Lincoln Project, Republicans are slamming Donald Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic. 'There’s mourning in America, and under the leadership of Donald Trump, our country is weaker, and sicker, and poorer. And now, Americans are asking, if we have another 4 years like this, will there even be an America?,' the ad says.

The Lincoln Project is a collective of Republicans who oppose President Donald Trump. One of its founders is George Conway, the husband of Kellyanne Conway.

From May Day 1886 to 2020, workers wage long, hard struggles to reform capitalismFrom the fight for an 8-hour workday to the fight for a safe, Corona-free workplace now. Employers block and delay reforms, and try to undo them once won. They use what capitalism gives them: dominant power, incentive (profit), and means (profits). If we change the system from capitalist to worker-coop, workers alone democratically make and secure reforms. Employers, the constant enemy of reform, vanish as a separate group dominating society.

All Three Pandemics Have Their Roots In An Economic Model Based On Profits, Greed, And Extractivism, Which Has Accelerated Ecological Destruction, Aggravated Loss Of Livelihoods, Increased Economic Inequality, And Polarised And Divided Society Into The 1% And 99%.

The Corporate-Dominated World Faces Not One, But Three Pandemics
By Vandana Shiva, Commondreams. The multiple crises are a wake-up call that the economy run by the 1% is not working for people and nature. The 1% is talking of 99% being “useless people” in their idea of the future based on digital agriculture and farming without farmers, automated factories, and production without workers. We have an obligation to create economies that do not destroy nature, do not destroy livelihoods and the rights of workers, economies that do not destroy our health by spreading disease and pandemics, do not destroy livelihoods and the freedom...

A patron asks: "Prof. Wolff, a question I realize is a lot in a small box: When empowered employees Google’s or Facebook’s programmers mobilize, they demand economic, environmental, and social ethics. Those pit them against Bernays’s legacy: psychological stress designed to induce compensatory (over) consumption. So how can ethical and democratic firms survive without inducing overconsumption? Do these firms become, in effect, landless communes? If climate change cuts water, arable land, and energy, induced “growth” costs lives."
