What is the point of elections if result is always the same
: a victory for the extreme centre?
Since the end of the Cold War, politics in affluent Western democracies has become a contest to see who can better serve the needs of the market.
Rather than left and right parties representing genuinely different policies, they have converged to create a global economic order where deregulation, free trade, privatisation and market-driven solutions hold sway.Whether voters agree or not, these things are a given, creating a massive disenchantment with government and a huge challenge to democracy.
