SNIPPET:

The Dutch Coastguard has issued a navigational warning after an ultra-large containership lost scores of containers while underway in the North Sea. The ship, MSC ZOE, was in German waters when it lost the containers in heavy seas between Vlieland, Netherlands and the German Bight in the southeastern North Sea on New Year’s Day.

Hapag-Lloyd Containership On Fire 🔥 Off the East Coast of Canada

January 4, 2019 by Mike Schuler

A fire has broke out aboard a Hapag-Lloyd containership in the North Atlantic off the east coast of Canada.

In a statement posted to its website, Hapag-Lloyd said the fire started January 3 in one container on the deck of the Yantian Express and has spread to additional containers.

Efforts to extinguish the fire were launched immediately but were suspended due to a significant deterioration of weather conditions.

At the time of the update, the ship was located approximately 650 nautical miles off the coast of Canada.

The crew of 8 officers and 15 seafarers are unharmed, Hapag-Lloyd said.

— Mike Schuler (@MikeSchuler) January 4, 2019

The ship was sailing from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Halifax, via the Suez Canal, where it was expected to arrive on January 4, according to AIS ship tracking data.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Friday afternoon that it is coordinating the response efforts to ensure the safety of the crew.

Another commercial vessel, Happy Ranger, was just 20 miles from the position of the Yantian Express and has diverted to provide assistance. A commercial tugboat is also en route.

The Coast Guard said it is monitoring the situation.

The 7,510 TEU vessel 320-meters-long and is flagged in German flag. The ship operates in the East Coast Loop 5 (EC5) service. It was built in 2002.

“It is still too early to make a precise estimate of any damage to the vessel or its cargo. Hapag-Lloyd is closely cooperating with all relevant authorities,” Hapag-Lloyd said.

Both the Yantian Express and Happy Ranger are participating in the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) program.

“Thanks to the participation of mariners in the AMVER system, we were able to coordinate a quick response,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Kelly Badal, operations unit watchstander at the Fifth District command center. “This system is crucial to coordinating nearby vessels to provide assistance when an emergency arises far from Coast Guard assets.”

No pollution or injuries have been reported.

The incident adds to a busy start to the year in terms of maritime accidents.

On December 31, the car carrier Sincerity Ace suffered a fire with five fatalities in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and Hawaii. This ship is now abandoned, adrift and the fire continues on board.

On January 1, the mega containership MSC ZOE lost an estimated 270 containers overboard in heavy weather in the North Sea. No injuries were reported.

On January 2, a 308-foot Chinese-flagged fish carrier, named Ou Ya Leng No. 6, ran aground on an uninhabited atoll in the Marshall Islands. Currently the crew of 24 remain on board the vessel.

Shifting North Magnetic Pole Forces Unprecedented Navigation Fix
Wandering of the Geomagnetic Poles

New Video Shows Russian Cargo Ship’s Busan Mayhem  :P
March 5, 2019 by Mike Schuler

A view of the MV Seagrand hitting a bridge in South Korea, February 28, 2019.

Some new footage published by Korean media today gives us new  look at the mayhem that went down last week in Busan as a Russian cargo ship hit moored sailboat before alliding with a bridge.

As we reported, the 5,998-ton MV Seagrand ran into the side of the Gwangan Bridge near Busan, South Korea last Thursday afternoon. Upon boarding the vessel, the Coast Guard found that the Russian captain had a blood alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit. It was also reported that the ship had hit a moored charter boat before alliding with the bridge. A video of the ship hitting the bridge went viral.

Now, some new footage filmed from fixed camera on the bridge of the ship shows that the Seagrand did in fact collide with a catamaran before sailing straight into the side of bridge. In the 10-minute video, you can hear an officer of Seagrand communicating with local VTS, at one point denying that a collision had occurred.

The video cuts in and out, but you can see that after a brief pause following the initial collision with the boat, the Seagrand pulls away from the dock with the motorist bridge off ship’s starboard bow. Moments later, the Seagrand can be seen hitting the bridge, causing its forecastle to collapse on deck.

The Korean Coast Guard said last week it was investigating the incident.

Are All Seemingly Autonomous Cars Really “Driverless”?  ???

Ford Transit Connect van

Anyone motoring around northern Virginia in the summer of 2017 might have done a double-take if they passed what looked like a car moving without a driver. But the Ford Transit Connect van wasn't actually a self-driving car. There really was someone behind the wheel -- hidden inside a fake car seat that made it look as if no one was driving.

The ruse was part of a Ford-funded study carried out by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to see how drivers and pedestrians would react to what appeared to be a driverless vehicle. Ford and other automakers are in the process of designing a standardized "language" of flashing lights that self-driving cars 🤖 would use to signal their intentions, such as stopping or turning, and to alert people to the fact that they are driverless.

The only hitch in the 2017 experiment came when local news stations got wind of the deception. The study was put on hold for a few days to ensure that people would be reacting to empty-looking cars and not just expecting them to contain guys disguised as car seats.

Driven to go driverless:

► The idea of a self-driving car has been around since at least 1939, when the New York World's Fair boasted an exhibit about driverless technology.

All of the accidents involving Google's fleet of self-driving cars (which have covered 5 million miles, or 8 million km, since 2009) have been caused by human drivers, mostly rear-ending the Google vehicles.

► The driverless car market has been predicted to be a $77-billion USD industry by the year 2035, according to the Boston Consulting Group.

How Many People Live without ⚡ Electricity❓

In 2017, the Earth's population reached 7.55 billion people, but not everyone was able to enjoy the benefits of a 21st-century existence. In fact, only 87 percent of those people had access to electricity. But there is major progress to report, according to the International Energy Agency's World Energy Outlook 2018. The number of people with access to electricity increased by more than 120 million in 2017. This meant that by 2018, the number of people living without electricity dipped below the one billion mark for the first time ever. Leading the charge was India, which electrified all of its rural villages. Significant advancements were also made in countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

Illuminating the Earth:

⚡► In Indonesia, the household electrification rate has risen to 95 percent, up from just 50 percent in 2000. And in Bangladesh, 90 percent of citizens now have access to electricity, up from only 20 percent in 2000.

⚡► However, the lack of electricity continues to exacerbate economic struggles for millions of others. For example, about 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa -- around 57 percent of the region's population -- still do not have access to electricity.

⚡► The electrification of households in Europe and North America began in the early 20th century in major cities, particularly in areas served by electric rail. By 1930, 70 percent of the United States had access to electricity.

What Is the Newest Discipline in the Sport of Fencing?

In a galaxy not so far away, doing battle with lightsabers has become a legitimate sport. Earlier this year, the French Fencing Federation officially recognized the Star Wars-fueled fascination with high-tech laser-light dueling by sanctioning events where participants use “blades” made of LED-lit, rigid polycarbonate lightsaber replicas. The goal is to get people off the couch and involved in more physical activity The lightsaber duels follow the basic rules of fencing, awarding points for making contact with the opponent. The first fighter to 15 points wins the match.

Yoda gets off the couch. ;D

En garde, Star Wars ✨ fans:

Fencing is thought to have originated in Spain, but the mechanics of the modern sport began in the 18th century at an Italian school of fencing.

The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre. Fencing was one of the first sports contested in the modern Olympics.

The "fencing" lightsabers are equipped with computer chips in the hilt that emit a throaty rumble when wielded during a match, much like the air-slicing sounds from epic Star Wars movie battles.

The F-35 jets will soon be delivered to the Vermont Air National Guard. They will do stuff, near the ground, over Camp Johnson, a mere 2 miles from my home in Colchester. Considering the present state of our country and our world's biosphere, the fact that these flying Pentagon Welfare Queens are horrendously LOUD may be a Blessing in disguise. In Trumpland, not being able to hear oneself think has its benefits. Have a nice day.

New AI Generates Horrifyingly Plausible Fake News
But the scientists who built it say it's the best tool against online propaganda

BAD GROVER!
May 30th 2019

Meet GROVER

In an attempt to prevent artificial intelligence-generated fake news from spreading across the internet, a team of scientists built an AI algorithm that creates what might be the most believable bot-written fake news to date — based on nothing more than a lurid headline.

The system, GROVER, can create fake and misleading news articles that are more believable than those written by humans, according to research shared to the preprint server ArXiv on Wednesday — and also detect them.

“We find that best current discriminators can classify neural fake news from real, human-written, news with 73% accuracy, assuming access to a moderate level of training data,” the researchers wrote in the paper. “Counterintuitively, the best defense against Grover turns out to be Grover itself, with 92% accuracy.”

In other words, the algorithm is apparently able to detect AI-written fake news better than any other tool out there. But in the wrong hands, GROVER could fill the internet with dangerous propaganda and misinformation.

Shipping Out

To help prevent fake news from taking hold, the University of Washington scientists who built GROVER announce in their research that they plan to release the tool to the public — a stark difference from the OpenAI team that refused to release the full version of its similar algorithm, GPT-2.

The algorithm can analyze more aspects of a news article than other tools, including not only the body of the article but also the headline, publication name, author name, and other details that could indicate foul play.

Wrong Hands

But that attention to detail also means that someone could use GROVER to create fake news of their own.

The study demonstrates how easily GROVER can churn out a news article falsely asserting that vaccines are linked to autism spectrum disorder, for instance, written in the distinctive styles of specific news outlets like The Washington Post,TechCrunchThe New York Times, and Wired. People who read GROVER’s articles found them more convincing than those written by humans, according to the study.

Writing in the style of The NYT‘s science section, GROVER generated not only a headline, but also an author’s name and the opening of a news article that attributes a link between vaccines and autism to scientists from UC San Diego and the federal government:

Those who have been vaccinated against measles have a more than 5-fold higher chance of developing autism, researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report today in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

In another example, the researchers demonstrate how GROVER can refine its output over time to better match a specific publication. They feed it with a headline about vaccines causing autism and tell it to match Wired‘s style.

GROVER uses that headline to write a full article, then goes back and refines the headline to make it look like something that Wired would publish. The researchers also included other fake articles in the style of The Washington Post claiming that Donald Trump had been impeached based on new evidence from the Mueller Report:

WASHINGTON — The House voted to impeach President Donald Trump Wednesday after releasing hundreds of pages of text messages that point to clear evidence of obstruction of justice and communication with the head of the Trump Organization about a potential business deal in Russia,” the article reads.

The 220-197 vote came after weeks of debate over whether new evidence released by special counsel Robert Mueller’s office signaled sufficient grounds for Trump’s removal from office. The president personally denounced the move, announcing his intent to veto the resolution and accusing Democrats of plotting to remove him from office through a “con job.”

The scientists concede that releasing GROVER to the world could be dangerous, but maintain that it’s still the best line of defense against algorithmic propaganda, even that created by GROVER itself.

How to Make the Perfect Milkshake for Throwing at Fascists
Combining the public humiliation of racists and one of nature’s most delicious frosty treats is pure poetry in motion.

A good milkshake is a terrible thing to waste. It truly is a most perfect dessert: a drinkable marriage of cream, milk, and sugar, served whipped and cold and just dense enough for a straw to stand at attention within. Its primary ingredients and preparation are accessible enough that even the most overworked and underpaid members of the laboring classes could, conceivably, grab one after work, or whip one up as a weekend treat between shifts of capitalist wage slavery.

The best milkshakes involve chocolate and peanut butter (this is an immutable fact, and not debatable, sorry), but many other flavors are acceptable, and experimentation is encouraged. For example, the banana and salted caramel milkshake is an unorthodox but inspired flavor choice, one that made its international debut via a guest appearance on British political hack Nigel Farage’s face.

1559059198812-GettyImages-1150500796

“Milkshaking”—quite literally, the practice of chucking milkshakes at and, ideally, on famous far-right figures when they slither into public places—is the latest trend that’s swept the young anti-fascist players of the British left. It started with Stephen “Tommy Robinson” Yaxley-Lennon, the former leader of the English Defense League, who has had milkshakes thrown on him by anti-racist protestors on multiple occasions. Alt-right UKIP politician Carl Benjamin—best known for ****-youtube-sargon-akkad-a8902666.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">disgusting comments he made about raping a female member of Parliament—has been milkshaked four times this month. Now, Nigel Faragehas joined the rogue’s gallery of milky (and eggy) far-right knobheads who have been utterly and completely owned by people willing to give up their precious cups of blended ice cream for the cause.

Of course, there’s nothing wasteful about fighting fascism.

Milkshaking’s power lies in the sheer ridiculousness of the situation. Someone’s thrown a milkshake at you! A milkshake! That’s silly as hell! As a direct action—an instance in which political activists or regular-ass people who are fed up with the state of things takes matters into their own hands, through either violent or nonviolent means—milkshaking is both effective and sophisticated, robbing its target of any dignity while emphasizing the illegitimacy of their noxious views. No one’s getting injured (though the New Republic has noted that throwing milkshakes qualifies as assault in some jurisdictions). Its very absurdity is the joke, and the fascist jagoffs who find themselves subjected to this creamy deluge are rendered powerless; if they react aggressively, they’ve been successfully “triggered,” that beloved byword of the worst kinds of people. If they sit there and take it, they look like a weakling. If, like Farage did, they call the cops (or retreat to the safety of a double-decker bus), they look even worse—the big strong “man of the people” who couldn’t handle getting a little egg on his face.

As much as the Piers Morgans and Ricky Gervaises and other assorted useless commentators of the world enjoy hand-wringing and bloviating over how nasty the left is being and how rude and terrible it is to temporarily inconvenience powerful men, there should be no debate over the importance of eradicating fascism, and of confronting its agents when they poke their ugly heads out into the commons. That the latest means of doing so involves both the public humiliation of racists and one of nature’s most delicious frosty treats is pure poetry in motion.

It’s time to live deliciously, comrades.

1559058171050-milk4

To make a milkshake, you'll need:

½ pint vanilla ice cream
¼ cup milk
About 4 tablespoons chocolate syrup

Set a glass in the freezer to chill while you make the rest of the milkshake. Warm an ice cream scoop slightly in a tall glass of hot water. Neither of these steps is strictly necessary, but will keep your drink frostier and will make scooping much easier, respectively.

1559057989040-milk1

Scoop the ice cream into the base of a blender jar, and top with milk. Pulse the blender a couple times to incorporate, then add the chocolate syrup and pulse until combined, pushing the ice cream down the sides if necessary. If you blend for too long, the blender heats up and melts the ice cream, making the shake unideal for drinking but perfect for throwing.

Adjust the texture as needed with more milk or ice cream, pulsing after each addition.

Remove the chilled glass from the freezer and pour the milkshake in. Serve (or throw, if legal in your jurisdiction and at your own risk) immediately.

Editor's Note: VICE condones only the drinking of milkshakes.
