Speed Machines - Cutty Sark and the Great Clippers (Nautical Engineering Documentary) | Spark

Published on Apr 21, 2017

They were fast and sleek and 150 years ago the great tea clippers ruled the waves. Battling the elements, they raced to deliver their valuable cargo from China to the fashionable tea drinking sets in London.

It sucked me right in. The main take-away for me is that I couldn't have made the crew of one those ships, ever. I was never that athletic. Some dangerous work there.

Great show. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed it! 🌞 I loved all the action involved. I was flabbergasted when I learned that a sail could weigh 5 TONS! :o :P And they had to sometimes replace a sail that blew out by sewing up a new one! Man, THAT was HARD WORK! 😓

The amount of rope (sheets, right?) line, here, there and everywhere on those ships is mind boggling. And did you catch those extra sails on the bamboo pole extentions? They went all out to get as much wind power 💨 as they possible!

I don't consider myself unable to climb now. You've seen me climb. But those fuckin' big wet sails, that wind.....anybody could get flung a mile off those masts. The main mast on Cutty Sark was 152 feet. My nose might start bleeding, dunno.

Yeah, those people going up and down the rigging to the yard arms had to practically be as agile as monkeys! Anybody with fear of heights could not even consider crewing on a clipper ship.
