Roberts is the second coming of Taney
« Reply #151 on: July 07, 2019, 04:05:27 pm »

In regard to this:

www.theatlantic.com - But, as Kagan argues in her dissent, this case should be easier than many in which gathering outrage tips over into judicial condemnation. This issue has firmer bones than that. Roberts’s faulty reas…

Quote
Last week, though, Justice Elena Kagan , writing for the four justices who disagreed with 😈 Chief Justice John Roberts’s opinion in Rucho v. Common Cause purporting to withdraw the Court once and for all from passing judgment on the constitutionality of partisan gerrymanders, ended thus:

Of all times to abandon the Court’s duty to declare the law, this was not the one. The practices challenged in these cases imperil our system of government. Part of the Court’s role in that system is to defend its foundations. None is more important than free and fair elections. With respect but deep sadness, I dissent.

Justice Kagan is right. The article is also right that the "reasoning" of Chief "Justice" Roberts is flawed. But, as usual, nobody wans to address the corporate fascist spoon fed malice aforethought (Mens rea) intrinsic to Roberts' "reasoning".

It is well and good to agree with you, but I need to remind you that the Supreme Court throughout it's history has given birth, aid and succor to some of the most retrograde opinions possible. Those of us who grew up in an era informed by the ghosts of Holmes, Brandeis, Frankfurter and Brennan, et al forget there was also a Roger Taney.

Dred Scott; Buck v. Bell (forced sterilization); Korematsu; Plessy v. Ferguson; and closer to our own time, right wing activism like  Bush v. Gore,  Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker, and my favorite, Citizens United v. FEC.

Roberts is the second coming of Taney.

True. I have always considered the Supreme Court itself an instrument of the rapacious oligarchy that has cursed this country from the start. Even Justice Holmes, known as the "Great Dissenter", did next to nothing to actually prevent the "color of law" approval of the continued ruthless exploitation of people (adults and children!) and planet by his fellow"Justices", who were nothing but oligarchy worshipping rubber stamping toadies.

My limited experience with the courts confirmed to me that all those pretty and noble words so many of these legal wordsmiths write into the laws are easily thwarted by the 💵🎩corrupt status quo defending sophistry intrinsic to our rigged for the rich juridical system.

Flying Tic Tacs?
« Reply #152 on: July 07, 2019, 07:51:40 pm »
Hey Surly, what do you think of these flying tic tacs? ;D Rather than tic tacs, if they are alive they should be called Giganticus bacilli, the HOT rods of the skies. 👀

Quote
bacillus

plural noun: bacilli

a rod-shaped bacterium.

The Nimitz Encounters

Published on May 26, 2019
Tic Tac UFO

November 2004, 90 miles of the coast of Mexico near San Diego, California, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group was conducting routine training and aerial defense exercises when unexplained events occurred. No one could have predicted what would soon confront the world's most advanced naval war ships and fighter jets.  Aerial craft would appear that forever changed all those that encountered them. The answers to the question of “what are they?” remains unanswered by the sailors and the US Gov. After years of cloaked secrecy the true story can finally be told. With multiple witnesses from the ships, their first hand testimony is impossible to deny.

Our film features CGI re-creations as told by the sailors and naval aviators that witnessed them. Aside from the historical fictionalized dialog (no one recorded the radio conversations), the story itself is based on the facts of the case, including official US government docs, witness statements, news reports and official timelines. It appears to me me that the Supreme Court is merely undergoing a "reversion" (also known as a REGRESSION) to the mean, pun intended. And I Do mean, "MEAN" .

The Golden Dawn Nazis may appear to be "losing voter support" because they did not get the 3% they needed but I am certain they are celebrating this "conservative" victory.

These Golden Dawn Fascists have predictably ruthless plans for "Dealiing with" climate change refugees from Africa. The "conservative" corporate lackey that just got elected thinks along the exact same repugnant lines.

Fascists everywhere are on a roll.

Fact check : Poll numbers undercut Bernie Sanders' claim on private insurance

As to the CNN article on Sanders, I firmly believe, unlike CNN, that Sanders is 100% accurate in everything he says about what the overwhemling majority of the public supports and what the public is against. The "for the moment we ain't gonna talk about dis or dat" (because, of course, they need to undermine the credibility of Sanders first so they don't have to bother with an argument they cannot argue with) bit right at the start is evidence of 😈 clever sophistry.

The establishment needs to do a certain amount of (SEE: Noam Chomsky) manufacturing of consent. In the Sanders case, the trick is to manufacture some DISSENT.

You begin by running a bunch of "public opinion" stat numbers by the masses to establish some credibility. Then you play all sorts of word games with those numbers to make Sanders look like and opportunistic liar.

But that is certainly not the most important part of the demonization strategy that all these ethically challenged propagandists want to carry out successfully. In the background is the uncomfortable fact that the public overwhelmingly supports Sanders' position on sine qua non action required to mitigate Catastrophic Climate Change. That is far more important to the public than adequate, and affordable, health care, though both are extremely important to the public.

The trick is to get enough people convinced that Sanders is full of baloney WITHOUT actually saying ANYTHING about his position on Climate Change MITIGATION. That way, the water carrying BASTARDS for the M.I.C., the Fascist Bankers and Big Oil can kick that can down the road another decade or so.

I do NOT think that will work. They will fail in their heinous efforts to demonize Sanders.

Because of that failure to manufacture consent (and dissent), the elections must then be rigged for the fascists to win.

The media will claim "the people have spoken", which is total BULLSHIT, and the Pentagon Internet Troll Farms using our tax dollars to bullshit us 24/7 will cheer all this "democracy".

Yeah, there is a big ethics free lobby out their buying politicians to defend the corporate health insurance crooks and liars, but those corporate greedballs are beginners compared with the oligarchs FULLY engaged in a criminal conspiracy to double down on biosphere trashing profit over people and planet.

They will use their 😈 pals (i.e. Pelosi, Biden et al) within the Democratic Party to do everything they can to underhandedly ruin Sanders' excellent reputation for reality based positions and solutions. I pray that they do not succeed.

SNIPPET from July 5, 2019 Counterpunch article by JONATHAN COOK:
Quote
It takes a determined refusal to join the dots not to see a clear pattern here.

Brand was right that the system is rigged, that our political and media elites are captured, and that the power structure of our societies will defend itself by all means possible, “fair or foul”. Corbyn is far from alone in this treatment. The system is similarly rigged to stop a democratic socialist like Bernie Sanders – though not a rich businessman like Donald Trump – winning the nomination for the US presidential race. It is also rigged to silence real journalists like Julian Assange who are trying to overturn the access journalism prized by the corporate media – with its reliance on official sources and insiders for stories – to divulge the secrets of the national security states we live in.

There is a conspiracy at work here, though it is not of the kind lampooned by critics: a small cabal of the rich secretly pullng the strings of our societies. The conspiracy operates at an institutional level, one that has evolved over time to create structures and refine and entrench values that keep power and wealth in the hands of the few. In that sense we are all part of the conspiracy. It is a conspiracy that embraces us every time we unquestioningly accept the “consensual” narratives laid out for us by our education systems, politicians and media. Our minds have been occupied with myths, fears and narratives that turned us into the turkeys that keep voting for Christmas.

That system is not impregnable, however. The consensus so carefully constructed over many decades is rapidly breaking down as the power structure that underpins it is forced to grapple with real-world problems it is entirely unsuited to resolve, such as the gradual collapse of western economies premised on infinite growth and a climate that is fighting back against our insatiable appetite for the planet’s resources.

As long as we  colluded in the manufactured consensus of western societies, the system operated without challenge or meaningful dissent. A deeply ideological system destroying the planet was treated as if it was natural, immutable, the summit of human progress, the end of history. Those times are over. Accidents like Corbyn will happen more frequently, as will extreme climate events and economic crises. The power structures in place to prevent such accidents will by necessity grow more ham-fisted, more belligerent, less concealed to get their way. And we might finally understand that a system designed to pacify us while a few grow rich at the expense of our children’s future and our own does not have to continue. That we can raise our voices and loudly say: “No!”
https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/07/05/the-plot-to-keep-jeremy-corbyn-out-of-power/

TPTB have a plan (see below). People like Sanders and AOC are obstacles to that plan.

Surly,
I just watched this short video. It's a great video (years ago I watched the excellent video this is a sequel of) and I recommend you view it and pass it on to others. It brought tears to my eyes because, though everything the people in this Sci-Fi Story did is so obviously necessary to preserve a viable biosphere, so logical, so reasonable, so possible, so realistic, so right and so beautiful, I have lost all hope that our God rejecting, self-worshipping, narcissistic, profit over people and planet dominated society will do that.

May God help us because TPTB never will. I will continue to do all I can to keep my carbon footprint tiny until I take my last breath. It's the right thing to do, even if it's a quixotic, insignificant drop in the bucket compared with the 24/7 worldwide 'business as usual' biosphere destroying pollution assault.

The Age of Stupid (10th Anniversary Mini-Sequel)

"Why didn't we save ourselves when we had the chance?" is The Archivist's question.  He is one of the last few humans alive the a post-climate change,
devastated world of 2055

And this is the direction we are headed folks.

If you did not see The Age of Stupid when it came out (2010) then you are really missing the best movie on climate change we've seen. It's available on YouTube at no cost, and on several other movie streaming platforms.  See it.  This tongue-in-cheek 'mini-sequel' will make much more sense.  Granted that this one is shorter.  So if you watch it first, perhaps it will whet your appetite for the 'real deal' (which was more 'kick in the pants' than 'tongue in cheek').

This is a prophetic movie. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

A quick, low-res copy is here...

Surly,
I just watched this short video.

Will check it out. Thanks, AG.

Everything We Know About The Jeffrey Epstein Sex Trafficking Case So Far

BY CLAIRE LAMPEN
JULY 9, 2019 4:05 P.M.  • 119 COMMENTS

On Monday, financier Jeffrey Epstein—a convicted sex offender long rumored to have preyed upon teenage girls—was indicted on sex trafficking charges in Manhattan federal court.

Epstein, 66, pleaded not guilty, and yet the stories about his predilections have been percolating for years: A shadowy billionaire who lured a steady stream of underage girls into his various mansions, enticing them to perform sexual favors for him and his mega-wealthy friends. An enigmatic businessman who recruited young women to bring in even more minors so that he would have, according to prosecutors, "a vast network" of girls available on demand.

The charges Epstein now faces stem from a pattern of behavior that allegedly unfolded between at least 2002 and 2005, and are effectively a repeat of those he faced in the mid-aughts. In 2007, however, Epstein accepted a plea deal from current Labor Secretary, and then-U.S. Attorney, Alexander Acosta, avoiding prosecution and a possible life sentence to serve just over a year in a relatively ritzy Palm Beach jail instead. A series of articles the Miami Herald published in late 2018, however, revived scrutiny of Epstein, and here we are: Buried in an avalanche of sickening allegations that have slowly accumulated over the years.

Let's attempt to dig ourselves out, shall we?

How has this been hiding in plain sight for so long?
Thanks to the aforementioned plea deal, Epstein has been able to say things like, "I'm not a sexual predator, I'm an 'offender' ... It's the difference between a murderer and a person who steals a bagel." Actually, that's a real thing he did say in 2011, to the NY Post. But the whole reason he swung that deal in the first place? His outlandish net worth afforded him a high-powered legal team—Alan Dershowitz and Kenneth Starr—whose members allegedly went after individual prosecutors and their families. And then, the plea itself reportedly refers to "information" he provided federal investigators, possibly in relation to Bear Stearns (his former employer) and the financial crisis.

Epstein's status also meant he could, allegedly of course, dictate the tone of media coverage. In 2002 and 2003, for example, when Vanity Fair's Vicky Ward reported an in-depth story probing the extremely murky source of Epstein's extravagant wealth, she noticed her subject seemed to care less about her discovery of his financial inconsistencies than he did about his sexual reputation. "What do you have on the girls?" Ward says he kept asking her, and indeed, she had two young women and their mother, all of whom vouched for Epstein's sexual manipulation of the younger, underage sister. According to Ward, under intensive pressure—possibly physical menacing—from Epstein, then-Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter cut mention of the alleged abuse from the piece. Carter now says that he lacked confidence in Ward's reporting; other Vanity Fair journalists beg to differ.

How did Epstein make his money?
Extremely unclear! Epstein contends he built his fortune managing billionaires' assets, but Ward's reporting points to far more underhanded alliances—mentorship by big-time grifter Steve Hoffenberg, for example—and an ouster from Bear Stearns over shady business practices. Still, nobody really knows. It bears noting, though, that Forbes has never ranked Epstein on its billionaire lists, because despite his posturing, "there is scant proof he holds a ten-figure fortune." Also: The NY Times has not been able to find any record that Epstein ever paid for his $56 million Upper East Side mansion.

Where did the alleged sex abuse take place, and what supposedly happened?
The focus of the sealed 2007 indictment was Palm Beach—specifically, the estate Epstein kept there, where the then-50-something hired girls as young as 13 or 14 to give him massages. Typically, the girls were fully or partially n a k e d; typically, the massages allegedly escalated to more explicitly sexual behavior: Epstein might masturbate, or make the girls touch him, or touch the girls. In exchange, he'd give them hundreds of dollars in cash, and in one case—when, according to the Herald, Epstein was "unable to control himself" and raped a 16- or 17-year-old—$1,000.

Consistently, the Herald reported, Epstein's victims "came from disadvantaged families, single-parent homes or foster care," and many were "one step away from homelessness." He allegedly paid his recruits to enlist more girls, wherever he had properties. One woman, Courtney Wild, now says she began working for Epstein in Florida, when she was 14 and still in braces. Epstein, she has said, made her a recruiter. "He told me he wanted them as young as I could find them," she told the Herald. "If I had a girl to bring him at breakfast, lunch and dinner, then that's how many times I would go a day. He wanted as many girls as I could get him. It was never enough."

giantdoor070819.jpg

In NYC, he reportedly brought in underage models from around the world and housed them in a building he owned: In her 2003 article, Ward quotes an unnamed woman who recalls parties full of "young Russian models" at Epstein's Upper East Side townhouse, a situation that "horrified" some of his guests.

That same Manhattan mansion, the one where investigators reportedly foundhundreds-to-thousands of apparently illegal nudes on Saturday, is said to be one site where Virginia Roberts Giuffre allegedly worked as Epstein's teenage sex slave. Giuffre contends that she met Epstein in 1999, while she was 15 and working a summer job at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago. Until 2002, she says, she was made to have sex with Epstein and his rich friends in New York, New Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Paris, France.

Read more about Epstein's alleged victims here.

Who were Epstein's friends?
British royal Prince Andrew (third son of the Queen); British aristocrat Ghislaine Maxwell; Jean Luc Brunel, co-founder of the MC2 modeling agency; Dershowitz; and Bill Clinton, who once rode with Kevin Spacey on Epstein's private plane (which gossip rags reportedly dubbed the "Lolita Express") to a variety of counties in Africa. In the past, Epstein has also been accused of trafficking the girls to some powerful men he ran with, as a means of getting dirt on them and, it would follow, assuring their loyalty.

Unilaterally, Epstein's many associates have denied involvement in—and in Clinton's case, knowledge of—Epstein's activities.

The most damning association award, however, goes to President Donald Trump. In 2002, Trump told NY Mag: "I've known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it—Jeffrey enjoys his social life."

In 2017, Trump's camp denied the president ever had any relationship with Epstein, but contemporaneous media reports provide evidence to the contrary. Ward's 2003 article names Trump among Epstein's frequent dinner guests, and as Vox reports, Epstein certainly had Trump's number, and frequented Mar-a-Lago until he got himself banned by making a move on a masseuse. The pair appear to have spoken on the phone on multiple occasions, and indeed, Trump was documented attending a number of Epstein's house parties in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Which brings us to another r a p e allegation against our current President.

Did Donald Trump r a p e d a 13-year-old girl?
A series of lawsuits, dismissed and repeatedly refiled in California and New York in 2016, allege that in 1994, Trump repeatedly raped a woman identified by the pseudonym Katie Johnson at Epstein's sex parties, when she was just 13 years old. The lawsuits says that Trump threatened "her family would be physically harmed if not killed" if Johnson came forward. Trump has categorically denied the allegations, and although Johnson provided a witness to corroborate her account, she has also left a convoluted trail journalists have had an impossible time following, and has so far declined to reveal her actual identity. So the short answer on this question is: Johnson's story can't be confirmed, so we can't know.

In any case, as Epstein's case draws widespread attention and dredges up the president's past once again, Trump now maintains that the two severed ties around 2004.

Why now, and what's next?
So, yes, Epstein already signed a plea deal in Florida—a deal former federal prosecutor for the U.S. Southern District of New York Elie Honig described as "completely unprecedented" in an interview with PBS. But the plea pertained to state charges, Honig pointed out, whereas Monday's federal indictment pertained to incidents that allegedly occurred in multiple states. Plus, New York places no statute of limitations on sex trafficking of a minor, meaning Epstein can still be prosecuted for crimes investigators believe he committed over a decade ago.

But that's all been true since 2007, so what catalyzed all of this? At a press conference on Monday, Geoffrey Berman—U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York—declined to say why the SDNY decided to pursue the case now, but did tip his hat to the Herald's investigative reporting. The indictment also comes months after the Manhattan District Attorney's office was widely criticized for allegedly having aided in the cover-up of Epstein's crimes in 2011. A spokesperson for the D.A. told Gothamist one of its prosecutors had just made a "mistake."

For now, Epstein is being held without bail at Manhattan Correctional Center until at least Thursday July 15th, the date of his bail hearing. He faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted

Epstein’s lawyer, Reid Weingarten, told reporters yesterday that the new charges were merely rehashing allegations that had been settled in 2008. “To us this indictment is essentially a do-over,” Weingarten said. “This is old stuff. This is ancient stuff.”

At Epstein's arraignment on Monday, alleged victims Michelle Licata and Courtney Wild were among those in attendance in the courtroom. Wild, who filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department in 2008 over its handling of the earlier plea deal, called the charges "overwhelmingly past due."

Accuser Sarah Ransome, who alleges that she was recruited and trafficked for sex by Epstein in 2006 and 2007, said yesterday that Epstein's arrest "is a step in the right direction" for holding him accountable "for his crimes and restore my faith that power and money can't triumph over justice."

I've been looking into the Epstein thing. The guy is connected to our fascist "Intelligence" Agency goons. That certainly does not surprise me. That is, after all, what fascists in NAZI Germany did for "entertainment". After (and BEFORE) WWII ended, a lot more fascists than a few German Rocket Scientists were transferred to the USA (and South America AND Europe, particularly Italy).

We are reaping the repugnant, society corrupting fruits of that ever since. Once these criminal perverts get connected to the police state elements, the laws are bent into whatever shape pretzel is necessary to keep them out of prison.

Take our spook Attorney General Barr (former CIA "lawyer" under Bush Daddy), for example. When you study his history, you learn that he is the SECOND generation of fascist SPOOKS in his family. His Daddy was OSS. You know, that very same OSS that started getting high powered (i.e. fortunes in GOLD needed to resurrect fascism after Hitler - SEE: Anderson "Trust") NAZIs out of Germany well before WWII ended and Operation Paperclip got going.

I'm sure you've heard of that fine fellow, Henry R. Luce, who had NINE wives along the way, who was (I think he died recently) key to making the Mainstream American News Media the handmaiden of the "Intelligence agencies" (i.e. the CIA). He came from exactly the same fascist cesspool as the Bush clan, the Dulles brothers, Kissinger and Theodore Shakley (the American CIA Fascist who set up NAZI havens, drug cartels and assassination squads in South America).

The point is that that Epstein has not been punished for his cruel, life destroying sexual predation of young women, and never will be punished for continuing to engage in these evil acts at every opportunity, BECAUSE too many "connected" people in power, and those in the SPOOK agencies that own them, support this despicable behavior and ROUTINELY engage in to as a matter of favored fascist "entertainment".

It's not a chicken or egg thing; it's a "go together like a horse and carriage" thing. Find a Fascist and you will find a Criminal Pervert. Find a Criminal Pervert and you will find someone who would love to work in an "Intelligence" Agency where their crimes (of all sorts, not limited to cruel abuse of young people) are never disclosed due to "National Security Concerns".
