Agelbert NOTE: This article is from 2017, but it shows that the great progress happening around the world in growing crops sustainably is not "hopium".

What’s happening around the world?

The US is a relatively small producer of greenhouse vegetables. In fact, the US represents only about 0.2% of the global greenhouse vegetable market, with the rest of the world producing over $300B of vegetables in greenhouses year-round.

I share your belief that vertical farming is going to be a huge part of how we move forward together. Should we live through these dark days.

Yes, these are very dark times. I admit sometimes I just want to roll up into a a ball and stop thinking until I die. I am so tired of hopeful signs being crushed into teeny tiny pieces of nothing by TPTB. As I observe this onslaught of increasing tyranny, I try to find solace in the fact that people of good will who lived during the Roman Empire, where law and order was whatever the judge decided it was on any given day, soldiered on in doing the right thing against all odds, even when friends and family were brutally murdered.

While the fascists want to achieve the same level of tyranny everywhere in the world today, they have not quite gotten there yet. Yeah, I know, that is a rather strange bit of consolation.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.

November 23, 2019

2-minute recap of 24+ hours of 🦅 hearings

Impeachment continued to build momentum in Washington, D.C. this week thanks to impeachment supporters who made calls, sent emails, and took to the streets last month. In October, impeachment supporters attended and asked questions about impeachment at more than 137 town halls. In November, Congress has taken notice. We’ve now heard from multiple key witnesses who are confirming some of the most damning facts about Trump’s use of military aid to pressure Ukraine to interfere in our elections.

If you didn’t catch all 24+ hours of this week’s public impeachment hearings or need a 2-minute summary, here are the key takeaways:

Tuesday, November 19th:

► Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman testified that he was so disturbed by Trump’s July 25th call that he immediately brought his concerns to the NSC lawyers, and he confirmed that Amb. Sondland raised politically motivated investigations to the Ukrainian delegation in a meeting John Bolton was forced to cut short. He also confirmed that no one supported Trump’s inexplicable decision to freeze military aid to Ukraine.

► Jennifer Williams pointed out an omission in the “transcript” of the July 25th phone call that the White House released. It failed to include mentions of Burisma, which is evidence of a coverup on the part of the Administration.

► Kurt Volker made it clear that there was and remains no evidence that Joe Biden acted improperly in Ukraine. The former Vice President did not try to shut down an investigation into his son’s company and Volker says that Trump’s attempts to launch an investigation into Burisma were baseless.

► Tim Morrison testified that he understood clearly, from conversations with Ambassador Sondland, that Zelensky had to announce an investigation into Trump’s political rival in order to receive the congressionally approved foreign aid.

Wednesday, November 20th:

► Ambassador Gordon Sondland declared, in no uncertain terms, that there was a quid pro quo between this administration and Ukraine. He also makes it clear that this was not just a case of a few bad actors. Those at the highest level, including Secretary Pompeo and Trump, knew about this corrupt deal.

► Laura Cooper confirmed the timeline. In direct contradiction of a Republican talking point, Cooper testified that Ukranian officials knew about the hold on security assistance just hours after the July 25th phone call.

► David Hale, one of the Republicans’ own witnesses, testified that withholding aid to a desperate ally is “unusual,” “completely inappropriate,” and just plain “wrong.”

Thursday, November 21st:

► Dr. Fiona Hill testified that the Ukraine pressure campaign was a "domestic political errand" that had nothing to do with corruption in Ukraine. She also pointed out that furthering conspiracies about the 2016 election to distract from Trump’s bad actions only helps Putin.

► David Holmes testified that “the security assistance hold was likely intended by the president either as an expression of dissatisfaction with the Ukrainians who had not yet agreed to the Burisma/Biden investigation or as an effort to increase the pressure on them to do so.”

So what did we learn this week? Witnesses confirmed that President Trump:

Pushed Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 elections.

Used US military aid and a visit to the White House to bribe and extort a foreign government into digging up dirt on his personal political opponent.

Tried to cover it up.

If the average person did this, they’d go to jail.

Here’s what we can do to ensure Congress holds Trump accountable: Visit impeachnow.org to find an event in your community and remind Congress that nobody is above the law.

Thanks,

I'm glad to see the Nunes skullduggery is coming to light. That crook is as much a part of Trump's 'get Ukraine to pretend they have dirt on Biden' criminal conspiracy as the three amigos PLUS Barr were (and still ARE).

Nunes should be impeached and prosecuted. The ethics investigation alone should be enough to force him out of the Impeachment Inquiry Panel AND force him to testify to the Impeachment Inquiry Panel under oath. That evil bastard is the ultimate fox in the henhouse.

As to what the Republicans "accept" (i.e. whatever they are paid to accept or reject, regardless of ethical considerations), lack of moral compass, the 'greed is good' morallity eschewing cancer destroying the fabric of society and the biosphere all life forms need to survive and thrive, is the problem. The relentless trashing of our biosphere for short term profit, now unraveling human civilization (as per your posted article above), though appearing to be a separate subject from the gross immorality displayed daily by the Republicans, is based on exactly the same illogic.

While Republicans are more in-our-faces about "situational ethics" (See: Orwell), Democrats and at least 75% of the adult population of the United States sees "no problem" with THAT. Well, THAT is destroying absolutely everything and everyone humans hold dear.

No ethics, no future, PERIOD.

Part of the enduring problem is that outside of the cities and some educated enclaves, much of the country is ensconced in rural idiocy. I'm sure you get to see plenty of it from where you sit. Outside the cities, rural areas are brimming with such people uncontaminated by evidence. As long as the government delivers hard right judges and preserves white privilege and prerogatives, they are good.

And the people who love them are going to empty the graveyards to bring out the 2020 vote. Imagine a second Trump Term with a Repugnant Congress.

The irony of all those "believers" in rural America supporting hard right judges, 🦀 Trump and the 🐘 Republican controlled Senate, ALL functional atheists who's only religion is "might equals right", hell bent on destroying this country for Capitalist profit over people and planet, is what gets me the most about this Orwellian clusterfuck we are living in.

Quote
Imagine a second Trump Term with a Repugnant Congress.

If that happens, then the following gallows humor is appropriate:

I totally agree with this quote from the article:
Quote
With more than a thousand mice per acre, an ecosystem is under threat. But poison could make things even worse.

I looked up Brodifacoum "rat" poison. They call it a rat poison because it was developed to deal with mice that were resistant to Warfarin (an anticoagulant rat poison that causes mice to hemorrhage and die). However, Brodifacoum, also an anticoagulant, as the article you posted mentioned, will kill all sorts of animals, including 🦉 owls.

Quote
/BIRDS and MAMMALS/ Owls (Bubo virginianus, Aegolius acadicus, Tyto alba) died of hemorrhaging after feeding on rats killed with brodifacoum.

Here's how it affects humans:

Quote
HUMAN EXPOSURE: The target system is the hematological system, with impairment of clotting. The main risks are associated with potentially fatal gastrointestinal and intracerebral hemorrhage. If toxic amounts have been ingested, coagulation will be impaired, with gum bleeding, epistaxis, ecchymosis, hematomata, hematesis, melena and hematuria. Oral exposure is the commonest route of entry. Brodifacoum is readily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. The ingestion of a large amount of brodifacoum over a two day period by a 31yr old psychotic woman produced generalized ecchymosis and abortion. A 17 yr old male ingested brodifacoum had flank pain and hematuria followed by epistaxis and gum bleeding. In an adult ingestion of brodifacoum produced bleeding for more than two months. In a longitudinal analysis of alterations in specific coagulation factors in a poisoning case demonstrated a profound decrease in factors II, VII, IX and X. The prognosis is poor in cases with internal bleeding or intracerebral hemorrhage and in patients with previous hematological illnesses or renal insufficiency. Muscular hematoma may result, especially on the elbows, knees and buttocks. Although the liver is the site of metabolism of brodifacoum, no observable clinical effects are apparent except coagulopathy.

Because humans are bigger in size than most animals that happen to ingest brodifacoum, the impairment of clotting on small animals is worse.

Quote
ANIMAL STUDIES: Brodifacoum and related compounds bind more strongly to a lipophilic site in the liver than does warfarin. In the poisoned rat, hepatic concentrations of the substance are 20 times higher than the serum concentrations. Brodifacoum has a very long plasma half life. Metabolic studies in animals have shown a half life of approximately 24 days, 120 days in the dog and 156 hours in the rat. Brodifacoum is hydroxylated to inactive compounds by mixed function oxidase enzymes in hepatic microsomes. Phenobarbital is known to increase the activity of hepatocellular microsomal enzymes and would increase the anticoagulant's metabolism as it does with warfarin. In the animal, it has been demonstrated that pretreatment with phenobarbital decreases the effect of brodifacoum. This compound acts by inhibiting the vitamin K epoxide reductase in the vitamin K1-epoxide cycle. Impeding the cyclic regeneration of vitamin K1, resulting in hypoprothrombinemia. The superwarfarins produce a diminution of the vitamin K dependent carboxylation of glutamic acid residues in prothrombin factor precursors. The effect is 100 times greater on a molar basis than that of warfarin. With its very long plasma half life, results in a potent anticoagulant effect. Brodifacoum is slightly irritating when applied to the skin or rabbits and to the eye. No effect has been demonstrated with technical brodifacoum in long term carcinogenicity tests. Studies in rats and rabbits have demonstrated no fetotoxic, embryotoxic or teratogenic effects.

Learn more: BRODIFACOUM ☠️

The 🦉 owls have something to say about humans poisoning mice and a lot of other small animals:

I'm with the owls on this one, Yes, the owls kill petrels when the mice population crashes. But, Brodifacoum will kill the mice, the eagles, the owls and just about every other small animal on that island for a long, long time.

Yes, Brodifacoum  worked in several islands in the past to get rid of mice infestations. However, I will wager they didn't drop large amounts from helicopters like is planned in this instance. The helicopter blunt instrument massive poison approach is guaranteed to produce overkill. It will profit only those that sell Brodifacoum. >:(

Yes, the cats and/or 🐍 snakes approach won't work because both cats and snakes are predators that seek the easiest prey, which in this case appears to be are the rare ashy storm petrels (and other nesting sea birds).

Owls turn on the rare ashy storm petrels only when they have no other prey available. Even so, the premise that the owls will end up wiping out the rare ashy storm petrels is, IMHO, flawed. Mice ARE the preferred prey of the 🦉 owls. The fact that the article singled out the ONE RARE species of sea bird the owls will eat when mice are not available makes me smell a Brodifacoum 😈 salesman RAT (pun intended). What about the significant percentage of the rest of the 300,000 breeding seabirds, five species of seals and sea lions, and a type of cricket found nowhere else in the world that will be sickened and/or killed by a massive helicopter drop of Brodifacoum?

I say bring more owl species to the Farallon Islands. Put owl nesting boxes all over the islands in places the mice go to feed. Owls know exactly what to do. They were designed to be night hunters. There is no other bird species, including eagles and hawks, that can compare with owls in mice hunting success.
