Coal has played a major role in providing us westerners with the standard of living that we've taken almost for granted for over a century. And there's enough of it still in the ground to carry on powering our energy hungry lives for hundreds of years. But of course there's just that pesky problem of the existentially threatening levels of CO2 emissions when we burn it. So are we reducing our global coal consumption and moving to alternative sources of power quickly enough to avert that eventuality? This week we take a look.

Carbon Negative is the bigger braver sibling of Carbon Neutral. Scientists tell us that to keep atmospheric warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius means a remaining Carbon Budget of somewhere between 400 and 600 billion tonnes of CO2 in total, and we still emit nearly 40 billion tonnes a year today. So that means immediately beginning the process of decarbonising energy, industry, transport and agriculture. But with coal still generating 40% of the world’s electricity, and 98% of the world’s vehicles still running internal combustion engines, how will we achieve the goal. Will we even achieve it all?

Antarctica : What happens if the 'Doomsday' Glacier collapses?

Antarctica is home to some of the world's largest ice sheets and glaciers. They existed in a stable equilibrium of ebb and flow for millions of years until global warming started to melt them faster than the snow falls could replenish their ice. Now a new US / UK research collaboration has discovered that the rate of melt is even worse than scientists feared. What's driving this latest acceleration, and can we slow it down?
