Company Blows Up Coal Plant During Respiratory Pandemic : Residents and city officials in Chicago are calling out a development firm for demolishing a portion of a closed coal plant this weekend that blanketed the surrounding community in dust. On Saturday, Hilco Redevelopment Partners went forward with a scheduled implosion of a smoke stack at the Crawford Power Generating Station, which sent dust streaming into the nearby predominantly-Latinx neighborhood of Little Village. The plant was closed in 2012 following a long battle with residents, and community members say they may file a lawsuit against Hilco. “It was crazy. I couldn’t breathe,” a local photographer who witnessed the explosion told Earther. “I didn’t bring a mask so I just had to make a makeshift one with my jacket over my face... It hurt my lungs for like 20 minutes afterward, and my nose burned.”
